Thought I'd post some more propaganda, since people are really getting mad at ONLY /u/Spez for this. For the people in the back that are still using Reddit- this is ultimately the reason why I left Reddit.
TL;DR: Yes, /u/spez is the CEO of Reddit, but now he's beholden to the true owners of Reddit- Literal white supremacists, Chinese businesses looking to subvert American democratic values, and businesses that are desperately looking for new ways to make money after a pandemic has gutted the people dry of all the money it could take.
Let's get a little Pepe Silvia in here, shall we? Setting mood music:
youtube
Reddit was originally founded by /u/Spez (real name Steve Huffman), Alexis O'Hanion, and Aaron Swartz (RIP). In 2006, Conde Nast bought Reddit. So, if you read Vogue, Pitchfork, Wired, Vanity Fair, & the New Yorker, you may have gotten some of the same content owned by the same company- just through a magazine rather than Reddit. Also, since June 2020, Conde Nast has claimed that their advertising revenue has gone down 45% have gone down dramatically since the pandemic, alongside the cancellation of major publications by Conde Nast. Buut in 2017, Reddit was made into an independent subsidiary by Advance Publications. Sounds like an innocent enough name, until you look at which companies these lovely people own:
That Charter Communication, is just a fancy name for the lovely ISP known as Spectrum- Better known to some of our older folks as Time Warner Cable. You know, one of the ISPs so hated in the United States that they actively changed their name so that people wouldn't recognize them doing their dirty work again?
Isn't it interesting that one of the main complaints by Huffman is that Reddit isn't getting it's due in advertising revenue? Huh. I wonder where he's getting that from. But that's only one section of the shit sandwich. Let's talk about some of the lovely* investors that Reddit's had on aboard since 2006. The list is.... interesting. 2014: A group of investors, including Marc Andressen (an investor in nearly all of the major social media networks that exist), Peter Thiel (a literal white supremacist), and for some reason, Snoop Dogg and fucking Jared Leto. 2017: Advance Publications buys Conde Nast and subsequently Reddit, raising its valuation to about $1.8 billion. 2019: Tencent (you know, the CHINESE VIDEO GAME COMPANY THAT HAS BANNED PLAYERS FROM THEIR GAMES FOR SUPPORTING HONG KONG DEMOCRACY DEMONSTRATIONS) buys a 5% stake in the company. Did I mention that Tencent is also the largest gaming company in the world? 2021: Fidelity Investments(??? an insurance firm and mutual fund????) decides to add another $700 million to the pot, giving them a whole stake as well too. So, let's tie this all together. Yes, /u/spez is the CEO of Reddit, but now he's beholden to the true owners of Reddit- Literal white supremacists, Chinese businesses looking to subvert American democratic values, and businesses that are desperately looking for new ways to make money after a pandemic has gutted them dry. Of course Huffman is going to stay the course on this one- his job literally depends on it in the first place. All of the people that make this site (what other social media network do you know that doesn't pay it's mods and is valued at $10 billion dollars) ? have been tossed to the side in favor of making money. Remember this:
Reddit and its investors do not give a fuck about their community.
They do not give a fuck about their moderators. They do not give a fuck about disability rights. Most of all? They don't give a fuck about you.

Pili, The Chosen Unique Nut of the Philippines
From my very early youth, there had been a nut our nanny brought from her home province that struck my interest. It was soft but crunchy, then kind of melts in your mouth. She called it Pili Nut. She brought some still encased in a hard, thick shell on which in the absence of a nutcracker I used a small hammer to crack open. Pretty rough and difficult but somehow did the trick. Or she brought them already de-shelled and cooked in white sugar which added to their palatability.
She came from the Bicol province and she called the nut, Pili. By its very name, there had been something outstandingly interesting about this nut from the start. Pili, in Tagalog meant, “Chosen.”
Decades later, working with government, I became researcher-writer for a small book we titled “Pili of the Philippines The Chosen Nut” in 2018. It was in collaboration with Region V or Bicol. As I had written then, “No one knows exactly when Pili cultivation began or how the tree and its fruits acquired the name Pili. It must have been in ancient times, when hunters and gatherers started to harvest wild Pili fruits. Today, the major global source of considerable quantities of this variety of Pili Nut remains the Bicol region.”
Pili trees, of the Canarium Ovatum Engl, variety began to thrive centuries ago in the lush and virgin rainforests around the still active Mt. Bulusan volcano in the province of Sorsogon in Bicol. Sorsogon is considered as the nut’s centre of genetic diversity. Pili’s historical background establishes its variety as uniquely indigenous to the Philippines.
The Philippine Department of Trade and industry has since been prompted to launch the Bikol Pili Geographical Indication (GI) to act as a guarantee that said product possesses certain qualities, reputation or other characteristics indigenous only to its geographical origin. The Bicol peninsula dominates the southeastern tip of Luzon, the country’s biggest island, a strategic location accessible by land, air, and sea.
But what makes the Pili Nut truly unique, chosen and much in-demand?
In the July 13, 2017 US edition of Vogue Magazine, it proclaimed the Pili Nut as “beyond being delicious…just edging out cashews and almonds for the highest magnesium content of any nut.” A study found it high in oleic and linoleic acid, has high levels of vitamin E, eight essential amino acids, and is chock-full of manganese and copper. Pili nuts are a complete protein and has the lowest carbohydrate count of any nut.
In more recent times, the Pili Nut has become a staple ingredient for a yogurt line in the US. An international high-end skincare line had also been launched using the pili oil as a naturally sourced alternative to the vitamin Retinol. Much earlier, the Philippines had been listed as the sole source of the elemi resin.
Manila elemi is the trade name for the soft, fragrant exudates obtained from the trunk of the Canarium tree species, used by the fragrance industry after distillation of its essential oils. And guess which global brands have since used this resin: CHANEL, GUCCI, DIOR, DONNA KARAN, RALPH LAUREN, and MARC JACOBS. Sound familiar?
The saga of the Pili Nut continued as the regional leadership in Bicol brought Filipino exporters to a string of global trade expositions in the USA, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, France, the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, and Germany.
Since then, the Pili Nut also began winning global attention and awards from the world’s gourmets.
Today, the Pili Nut had also pursued and attained Kosher certification from the US-based company I do liaison work for in the Philippines. We did a soft launch of the product line a few years back in KOSHERFEST, the world’s largest B2B international trade show based at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey USA. The reaction has always been warmly encouraging and positive, drawing high interest. We now continue to showcase Kosher-certified Pili Nut products in the designated Kosher booths every year.
Based on my experience, the Pili Nut is truly going to go the distance because of its outstanding characteristics and qualities. It has gone a long way from being a Philippine favorite snack and takeaway gift whenever available. I have now seen it sold in the Legaspi airport in Bicol as well as in the international departure airport in Metro Manila.
I am also very pleased that the Kosher certifier I assist is the first to certify it in the Philippines. For those who need a Kosher-certified Pili Nut supplier, do check with me. It is the only prestigious manufacturer that is certified as far as I know.
Should you need other outstanding Filipino Pili Nut producers, even if not Kosher-certified but may have the quality assurance of Halal, USFDA and other important local and global certifications, please get in touch with me too.

The Week in Business: Go Ahead, Put Off Your Taxes Good morning and happy spring. Here’s hoping you can enjoy another Sunday spent ignoring your tax returns (or, if you’ve already done them, feeling smug about it). But first, here’s what you need to know in business and tech news for the week ahead. — Charlotte Cowles What’s Up? (March 14 to 20) More Time for Taxes Good news for procrastinators like me, or anyone whose taxes were complicated by the pandemic: The Internal Revenue Service has extended the deadline to file taxes by one month, to May 17. The extra time will help people navigate new tax rules that took effect with the passage of the American Rescue Plan. The law made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free for people who earned less than $150,000 last year, a significant benefit for many people whose jobs were disrupted. But if you’ve already filed, don’t worry — the I.R.S. said it would automatically send those refunds to people who qualify. Well, That Was Awkward Relations between China and the Biden administration got off to a rocky start last week at the first face-to-face meeting between diplomats. The United States set a confrontational tone on the eve of the talks by imposing sanctions on 24 Chinese officials for undermining democracy in Hong Kong. In turn, China’s top diplomat accused his American counterparts of being “condescending,” among other claims. The purpose of the three-day meeting, according to President Biden’s team, was to find common ground on climate change and on controlling the pandemic, and to address U.S. concerns about Chinese trade and military encroachments. The tension does not bode well for making headway in future negotiations. The Case Against Disney Ten women who are suing the Walt Disney Company for what they call “rampant gender pay discrimination” have added another accusation to their list: that Disney “maintains a strict policy of pay secrecy.” A new section of the lawsuit refers to an episode in which one female Disney employee was “disciplined for disclosing her pay to co-workers.” Pay transparency is considered an important part of closing racial and gender wage gaps, and retaliation for discussing your own salary violates California law as well as the National Labor Relations Act. Disney has denied the claims and vowed to defend itself. What’s Next? (March 21 to 27) Coming to a Walmart Near You Walmart is jumping on the vaccine passport bandwagon, saying it will provide standardized digital vaccination credentials to anyone who gets vaccinated at one of its stores or at Sam’s Club. The retailer will develop a health passport app that people can use to verify their status at airports, schools, sports arenas and other potentially crowded places. Walmart joins an existing push by major health centers and tech companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce and the Mayo Clinic, as well as a proposal from the European Union, which would require vaccine verification for travel in certain areas. How Has the Pandemic Changed Your Taxes? Will stimulus payments be taxed? Nope. The so-called economic impact payments are not treated as income. In fact, they’re technically an advance on a tax credit, known as the Recovery Rebate Credit. The payments could indirectly affect what you pay in state income taxes in a handful of states, where federal tax is deductible against state taxable income, as our colleague Ann Carrns wrote. Read more. Are my unemployment benefits taxable? Mostly. Unemployment insurance is generally subject to federal as well as state income tax, though there are exceptions (Nine states don’t impose their own income taxes, and another six exempt unemployment payments from taxation, according to the Tax Foundation). But you won’t owe so-called payroll taxes, which pay for Social Security and Medicare. The new relief bill will make the first $10,200 of benefits tax-free if your income is less than $150,000. This applies to 2020 only. (If you’ve already filed your taxes, watch for I.R.S. guidance.) Unlike paychecks from an employer, taxes for unemployment aren’t automatically withheld. Recipients must opt in — and even when they do, federal taxes are withheld only at a flat rate of 10 percent of benefits. While the new tax break will provide a cushion, some people could still owe the I.R.S. or certain states money. Read more. I worked from home this year. Can I take the home office deduction? Probably not, unless you’re self-employed, an independent contractor or a gig worker. The tax law overhaul of late 2019 eliminated the home office deduction for employees from 2018 through 2025. “Employees who receive a paycheck or a W-2 exclusively from an employer are not eligible for the deduction, even if they are currently working from home,” the I.R.S. said. Read more. How does the family leave credit work? Self-employed people can take paid caregiving leave if their child’s school is closed or their usual child care provider is unavailable because of the outbreak. This works similarly to the smaller sick leave credit — 67 percent of average daily earnings (for either 2020 or 2019), up to $200 a day. But the caregiving leave can be taken for 50 days. Read more. Have rules changed on charitable giving? Yes. This year, you can deduct up to $300 for charitable contributions, even if you use the standard deduction. Previously, only people who itemized could claim these deductions. Donations must be made in cash (for these purposes, this includes check, credit card or debit card), and can’t include securities, household items or other property. For 2021, the deduction limit will double to $600 for joint filers. Rules for itemizers became more generous as well. The limit on charitable donations has been suspended, so individuals can contribute up to 100 percent of their adjusted gross income, up from 60 percent. But these donations must be made to public charities in cash; the old rules apply to contributions made to donor-advised funds, for example. Both provisions are available through 2021. Read more. Back in the Hot Seat Chief executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter will be grilled in Congress this Thursday, this time over their failure to crack down on the spread of misinformation. Tech executives were last summoned by lawmakers in November 2020, when Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Jack Dorsey of Twitter faced a firestorm of questioning about content moderation, mostly regarding their attempts to prevent a wave of falsehoods about the presidential election. This time, they will be asked about coronavirus vaccine misinformation and about the election fraud conspiracy theories that continue to spread on their platforms. Elsewhere in Washington The two biggest names in economic policy — the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen — will make their first joint appearance this week when they testify before the House Financial Services Committee on the progress of pandemic relief efforts. The hearing comes one week after the Fed revised its economic outlook to project stronger growth and offered more reassurances that it would keep interest rates near zero for the coming years. What Else? The Education Department jettisoned a Trump-era policy that limited debt relief for students who were defrauded by for-profit educational institutions. The newly hired Teen Vogue editor, Alexi McCammond, resigned over racist and homophobic tweets that she posted a decade ago. And retail sales dropped 3 percent in February as consumers grappled with declining stimulus effects and devastating winter storms. Source link Orbem News #Ahead #Business #put #Taxes #Week

try { window._mNHandle.queue.push(function (){ window._mNDetails.loadTag("173377332", "300x250", "173377332"); }); } catch (error) {}
Final Friday, Eros Worldwide — the studio behind movies such as the Salman Khan-led Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone-starrer Bajirao Mastani — introduced that it was merging with Hollywood studio STX Leisure, finest identified for the Mila Kunis-starrer Unhealthy Mothers, and the Jennifer Lopez-led Hustlers.
They sound like two very completely different firms. The mixed outfit — now identified as Eros STX — will proceed that method, Eros Worldwide CEO Pradeep Dwivedi informed Devices 360. The plan is to make some motion pictures just for India, and some just for the US. However going ahead, they may even collaborate on Indo-American initiatives, which could imply a mixture of actors, administrators, composers, or VFX tech.
Citing the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Dwivedi stated there’s a chance for them to be retold in a world context, in a serialised storytelling vogue, in a shared universe method just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“They’ve historically been informed in a really socio-cultural non secular context of India,” Dwivedi stated. “However the tales are about brotherhood, about households, about aspirations, about ambition, and about jealousy. And you are taking all of those tales, put it into the worldwide context, use one of the best of science fiction and visible results, and create tales set in different universes actually. To make content material with the franchise equal of [Marvel].”
Dwivedi additionally sees the Eros STX merger as the gateway to a bigger presence in China, the most important theatrical market — as soon as the pandemic subsides, anyway — on the earth. He is not referring to the distribution of Bollywood movies in China, which Eros and others have had success with previously — Bajrangi Bhaijaan made almost a 3rd of its field workplace there — however fairly, making Chinese language motion pictures. And Dwivedi is fast to level out what he thinks is completely different about them.
“What we’re speaking about shouldn’t be the Hong Kong form of motion pictures, however actual mainland China tales which are great, that want to be informed in a world context, and want to be produced from a world perspective. And that is precisely what we’re intending to do. […] We imagine that China is an enormous market alternative for inventive expression and inventive content material.”

The Eros STX merger can also be excellent news for its streaming service Eros Now, which has over 26.2 million paid subscribers globally, although it refuses to disclose direct subscription numbers. Eros Now CEO Ali Hussein thinks it can assist the service develop into extra related within the Center East and Southeast Asia, since STX is extra fashionable globally.
It additionally follows the March reveal of Eros Now Prime, a brand new tier solely geared in direction of English-language content material, which alerts a much bigger Hollywood focus on the whole. Anticipated to roll out inside the subsequent few months — Q1 2020 — Eros Now Prime introduced a partnership with NBCUniversal, which can deliver reveals such as Fits and its spin-off Pearson, the revival of Will and Grace, the reboot of Magnum P.I., the Anupam Kher-starring New Amsterdam, and the interval drama Belgravia.
“Historically, Eros Now was extra catered to form of the tier-II, tier-III markets the place primarily, we have been distribution via center India at giant,” Hussein stated. “There’s a sure form of propensity to disposable earnings and a specific amount of ARPU [average revenue per user] that it is possible for you to to derive out to these markets.
“With Eros Now Prime, we have two bigger performs: one is that numerous the English content material, when it comes to distribution, was restricted as a result of tv channels will not get the respective frequencies to be much more mass market. So we’re permitting for know-how and language to play a big position right here. Taking a look at issues like subtitling, dynamic dubs, to [ensure] the English content material can float via different elements of the nation.”
The second cause for launching Eros Now Prime is to offset the unique downside of low ARPUs in serving center India — cater extra to the English-speaking viewers which has extra money to spend. This may not occur instantly, as Eros Now Prime will likely be launched at a beginning worth level of Rs. 49 a month. For HD, you have to pay Rs. 99 a month.
However as it will increase companions past NBCUniversal, Hussein stated, Eros Now will take a look at a separate worth level for Eros Now Prime, round Christmas 2020 or early 2021. After that, subscribers could have the choice to decide what they need in à la carte vogue, or go for the whole bundle.

Its guardian firm — Eros STX — can use all the assistance it will possibly get.
Eros’ financials have been known as into query a number of instances within the final 5 years, with funding and credit score rankings agency shorting its inventory or downgrading its ranking. Dwivedi termed the studies “unsubstantiated” and pointed to the 2017 US Supreme Court docket case they received, and the truth that Eros STX has signed a $350 million line of credit score from funding agency J.P. Morgan. Nonetheless, Eros’ inventory has gone from $36 in 2015 to $2.64 this week on the New York Inventory Trade.
Dwivedi added: “Whereas I do not usually subscribe to the inventory market — we, basically as an organization, imagine in doing the correct work by means of content material advertising and marketing, realisation, revenues, and doing nice content material for nice viewers — clearly it has been a difficult interval in the previous few years. We imagine that with this [STX] partnership, a few of these points will get taken care of.”
STX has additionally had its personal share of monetary worries. It as soon as deliberate an IPO (preliminary public providing) on the inventory trade in Hong Kong, earlier than abandoning that concept due to an underperforming field workplace, and a commerce conflict between the US and China.
“The 2 firms put collectively are a lot stronger. It is clearly an instance of 1 plus one is equal to three,” Dwivedi stated.

All things are indeed created twice
This article is written by Komal Shah, Content Head, Team iPleaders.
I hated Mills and Boons. For those who aren’t aware, Mills & Boons were the love stories in vogue a long time before the Twilight brigade came along. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have fantasies. Except these would have me as the heroine all along. I didn’t dream of knights in shining armour rescuing me, I would dream of kicking some corrupt goons in their behind. Or if there ever was a hero, his role was to be dragging me out of the office close to midnight to have a romantic stroll on the beach. Seeing as this write up was initiated at about 11.34 PM and then halted in the middle, I am living the dream.
Speaking of dreams, a sage saying goes ‘All things are created twice – first in the mind, and then, in reality.’ Trust me, it’s true. While going through one training, I was introduced to a scientific technique called ‘relaxation’ coupled with ‘visualisation’. You can read about it here. It relates to bringing your subconscious mind to a level where it accepts suggestions and then using visualisation to make it work precisely in the direction you want it to work.
I picked up the technique quickly because I absolutely didn’t mind daydreaming. On one occasion, I recall that I put the daydream in detail, down on paper and submitted it as a write up for the journal of the Ahmedabad Chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. To my astonishment, it was published. Not only that, a senior professional probably found the imagery to be splendid, and wrote back to the chapter stating he was impressed with my vision. I got fan mail for my daydream!!
Sportspersons use this technique thoroughly. They see themselves damaging the other team the day before the matches. They see all the details – they see how they negotiated a difficult situation and still managed to bowl that unimaginable yorker to dislodge the stumps. They see how they kicked the football from miles away and brought it within the goal post. They see how they hit the final punch to knock out the opponent. You’ve got to dream it, in every single detail, feel it and sense it and believe in it. When you do this, your mind picks up the suggestions. It’s incredible how magically you will see situations turning to your advantage – it’s like there is an angel in the sky, listening to whatever you are telling yourself.
Why not use this for your career? You wanna be Harvey Specter, see yourself as one, striped suits and cocky lines included. You wanna be one hell of an M&A lawyer, see yourself working on the deals. Your mind will automatically bring you to acquiring the right skills and make you do things towards being that. You wanna be negotiating contract clauses with the opposing counsels and ‘one-upping’ them every time? See this happen. Feel it. Feel it in your bones, how you won the negotiation for your client. The suggestions you give your mind do turn into reality. When? This depends on how detailed your vision is, and how fast you act on what your mind asks you to. Time is precious. Don’t waste it.

Can you visualise yourself closing M&A deals, or learning how to draft over 100 commercial contracts in next one year, arguing bankruptcy cases in NCLT or becoming a hotshot arbitration lawyer flying international to represent your clients in Dubai or Hong Kong?

Margarita Gambles UK ELLE July 2020
https://ift.tt/2YZcoEX
Magazines are our escape from the real world. Especially with everything going on right now. Thankfully, it’s been business as usual at Vogue Paris, Vogue Hong Kong and WSJ. Magazine. Now we can add British ELLE to that list with the publication whisking us away to a Moroccan beach for July 2020. Margarita Gambles was snapped by Victor Demarchelier and styled by Jenny Kennedy for the German ELLE reprint. The model makes us long for a summer vacation as she poses under the warm sunshine decked out in a look from Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2020 collection.

Members of our forums weren’t exactly happy with the outcome. “Farrah Storr took this magazine back to 2007 with REPRINTS!” scolded MON the moment the cover dropped.
“The finished cover looks so dated! There were loads of other options they could’ve gone with,” Benn98 chimed in.
In complete agreement was caioherrero: “Why are they doing this? ELLE U.K. was going up in sales with Anne-Marie Curtis. Why do they want to kill the magazine?”

“It feels like they’re just churning out a print product in order to keep the brand name alive in order to use it for event marketing,” said tigerrouge.
“This Demarchelier story is also in French ELLE. British ELLE has lost so much of its own spirit…and that’s sad. So many magazines look the same now…” voiced EricGallais.
But vogue28 disagreed with the majority. “I have ZERO issue with a magazine reprinting content given the current situation… This cover is by no means offensive. It oozes that quintessential ELLE aesthetic, can appreciate the beach setting during this lockdown period, love the Louis Vuitton dress and it’s nice to see some diversity on the cover of British ELLE.”
“It’s a pretty cover, even with the baggy outfit. I love the soft sunlight,” admired Srdjan.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE: HOW APAC CONSUMERS ARE CHANGING, VIA GOOGLE
Home to 60% of the world's population, the APAC region is the world's fastest-growing internet market and the internet’s “new capital”, according to a new report from Google.
Google has released a fascinating report that shines a light on internet users in the Asia Pacific. Called “A Peek into your Consumer's Future 2020”, the report (released annually) identifies shifts in consumer behaviour that will guide marketers in the decade ahead.
It’s hard to believe that in 2010, Asia was home to just 764 million internet users versus over 2.3 billion internet users in Asia today.
In the process, the APAC region’s transformation from “follower to leader has been swift and unprecedented. It has become the most advanced digital economy in the world and is leading the way in innovation,” according to Google.
With 98% of internet users in APAC being mobile internet users, it’s no surprise that the top three most engaged mobile internet countries in the world are all from APAC: in Thailand, people spend an average of 5:13 hours per day using mobile internet services, followed by the Philippines and Indonesia.
“Since Asian consumers are spending a significant amount of time on mobile internet, they tend to be very receptive towards new technology and business models. This is one of the major reasons behind the exponential growth of the start-up ecosystem and the birth of unicorns in the region; with two sectors—ridehailing and e-commerce— growing at a record pace,” says Google.
According to Google, the internet economy of Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore is collectively valued at $100 billion, and has received more than $37 billion in capital over the last four years.
As Mark Britt, Co-Founder & Group CEO of iflix, says: “There’s a blossoming of local culture that I think the internet is really embracing – 80% of the reason why iflix subscribers join the service is to access unique local content. It's become such a truism in our business, we've almost stopped reflecting on it.”
Google’s APAC report also singles out three consumer shifts that will change the game for marketers:
Trend #1: With me
This trend is all about shared experiences and people’s desire to belong to online communities through participatory content. Think live streams and videos of everyday activities like cooking macarons or packing suitcases. It may be hard to believe anyone would want to watch someone cleaning their bedroom or studying (the video below has been viewed 4.6 million times!) but creators of these videos make them interesting by inviting viewers to be a part of the action through live comments.
According to Google, in the first half of 2019 alone, YouTube viewers in Korea watched over 500 years worth of ‘With Me’ content! This includes Korea’s famous ‘mukbang’ videos where creators eat copious amounts of food and live stream the footage as they interact with online audiences. (Mukbang is a mix of two words: muk-ja for “eating” and bang-song for “broadcast”.)
Trend #2: All to gather
This trend refers to the practice of using “inclusive design” to help consumers gain access to products and services no matter where they live, what language they speak, what gender they identify with, their age, sexuality or physical ability.
In Asia, this means a growing number of brands are bucking the trend of designing for ‘western’ features. Love, Bonito is a fashion brand that intentionally designs silhouettes and colours that suit an Asian women’s body proportions and skin tone; while The Feisty Chick is a beauty company whose user-friendly products are designed with Asian eyelids and eye types in mind.
What does this mean for marketers? Consumers don’t want to be seen as a monolithic mass, so it’s essential for brands to understand the needs of various groups, and also recognize the diversity within them.
“Along with inclusive design, it is imperative for them to use the tools of marketing and communication to raise awareness about the benefits of diversity. Such an approach can improve user experience and serve a larger mass of people,” writes Google.
Trend #3: Shared commerce
Second-hand goods and shared experiences are now in vogue. Led by companies like Uber and Airbnb, the sharing economy has triggered a major shift in consumption where people are happy to rent or share objects rather than own them.
It’s a trend that is also taking off in Asia: according to a global survey carried out by a leading re-commerce player in April 2019, Hong Kong shows the third highest consumer interest in sustainable fashion, after Italy and Spain. In China, the size of the second-hand market is expected to double by 2020 to more than US$140 billion.
“Ownership is on a declining trend around the globe. Gen Y and Z have demonstrated a strong preference for pay-per-use models; partly enabled by successful digitalisation efforts leading to better antifraud solutions, which is key to a thriving sharing economy,” says Ishwar Dhanuka, Co-Founder, MyRent.
“With rentals you're able to always have access to the latest and greatest technologies, without a huge upfront cost, and consume in a manner that's sustainable for our planet.”
What does this trend mean for marketers? It means building their re-commerce business models, and considering “product innovation that adds value through convenience to the consumer’s purchasing experience”.
