For the ask meme let’s try streetcar, rail, and ticket 💜
This is for this writing meme here which I am still happy to answer.
Streetcar is in fact in the first sentence:
At the corner of Queen and Bay Streets, a crowd of people flowed off the streetcar, to be replaced by the much better-dressed crowd which had just left City Hall.
Rail didn't appear until ten seconds ago when I realized it should:
It was a long ride down Queen Street in the dark, watching for potholes and streetcar rails.
(Streetcar tracks are still a serious danger to cyclists in Toronto.)
Ticket:
Across the street was a row of newish townhouses, and he wondered how the residents felt about living directly across the street from the Arena. He wouldn’t mind it himself, during the hockey season. Perhaps they got free tickets to make up for the noise and inconvenience.

Femslash June
It’s that time of year again! (or technically a few weeks past time for an announcement, but who’s counting.) For the people who are feeling glum that the next Femslash February is so far away; for the people who still haven’t finished the piece that was supposed to be done four months ago; for the people who think every month should be femslash month....
There is a solution. It is one part Femslash June, and one part you.
FJ provides the occasion, and the enthusiasm; you provide the fanworks (and the audience for fanworks.)
Femslash June is a knockoff younger, more vernal cousin of @femslashfebruary -- an occasion to produce, consume and otherwise celebrate all things femslash. We have a rich and wonderful ao3 archive from years past (2015 is here, and 2016 is here) and we have created an archive for all of the lovely fanworks you will create this June!
How to participate in Femslash June:
1) Create a thing, post it to AO3, and add it to the FJ 2017 collection. The collection will be open until July 15th.
and/or
2) Read, view, listen to or otherwise consume works of femslash (including but not limited to those produced for this month’s event, and for years past.)
2.5) Go see @wonderwomanfilm, while you’re at it.
And please help us spread the word! The more this post circulates, the more femslashy goodness there will be for all.
(block o’tags below a cut to minimize dash congestion.)

Something Sweet
I wrote this last night (Valentine's Day) as a gift for @interestingguesses ♥ Happy Femslash February!!!
“Mmm, you're so sweet.”
Molly blushes to the roots of her hair. (Janine knows this for a fact; she has the perfect vantage, tucked behind her in bed.)
“You're sweet.”
Janine laughs.
“No, not really.” She nuzzles Molly's neck, licks behind her ear. “Brash, yes. Bold. Daring.” She nips Molly's lobe, eliciting a giggle. “Abrasive, even. But not sweet.”
“Hmm.” Molly wriggles back against her, nestling closer into her embrace. “I dunno…” She lifts Janine's hand from where it's wrapped around her waist, brings it to her lips. “You taste pretty sweet to me.” A flicker of tongue on wrist, and Janine's squealing, unable to stop the embarrassing high-pitched sounds and accompanying flailing of limbs.
Molly grins against her skin.
“See? Sweet.” Another lick, this time long and slow, and Janine calms, ticklish sensations subsiding under Molly’s hot mouth. “Delicious.” A long stroke ending in a swirl in the centre of her palm, and Janine sighs into Molly's hair. “Intoxicating,” Molly whispers. “Like Irish cream.”
Molly brings Janine's wet palm down, down, between her legs, and Janine thinks that she can live with being ‘sweet’.
***
It's sitting on the table when Molly comes down for breakfast the next Sunday, still blinking the sleep out of her eyes. She frowns, looking around as if she might be on camera, but the flat is silent, Janine still dead to the world (she probably will be for hours, the lazy dosser). She approaches it cautiously, carefully picking up the bottle to examine it closer. When she sees the label, she breaks out into a giddy grin.
“You ridiculous romantic.”
***
When Janine finally stumbles down to breakfast at half ten, the kitchen is full of rich smells, sizzling butter and sharp acidic coffee and the seductive low notes of fatty meat simmering away in the crockpot. Molly is humming and dancing from stove to counter to fridge and back again. She does a little twirl and catches Janine's eye, teetering off-balance for a second as she tries to compose herself.
“Oh, you're up!” She flushes, a smile spreading across her face despite her best efforts.
Janine chuckles.
“And you found my present.”
Molly flashes her a wicked grin.
“Guilty.” She spins to Janine, a steaming mug in her hand. “Care for a sip?”
Janine squints down at the pale beige liquid. “Just how much did you put in this?”
Molly shrugs. “Enough.” She steps closer, dark eyes alight with mischief. “C’mon. Some Irish coffee for my Irish toffee?” She raises an eyebrow in mock challenge, then bursts into laughter, and it's so adorably endearing, Janine can't help but join her.
“Fine, you win.” She catches her breath and leans forward, lips wrapping around the lip of the proffered mug. She looks up at Molly through sleep-heavy lashes and winks. Molly tips the mug towards her and Janine swallows down a creamy-bitter-sweet-holyhellalcoholic mouthful, and Christ but that's good and strong first thing in the morning. Molly withdraws the mug and Janine licks her lips, slowly, gaze fixed on Molly. Molly’s eyes track her tongue, her breath drawing in with an audible “ah!” that Janine wants to taste.
So she does.
Molly tastes of coffee and booze and buttery toast, and Janine thinks she could live on her kisses alone. She licks into Molly’s mouth, chasing the heady flavour and the soft moans coming from the back of Molly’s throat.
When she pulls back for air, panting and a little lightheaded, she’s gratified to see the slightly awed look on Molly’s face, eyelids fluttering and lips parted.
“Good morning,” Molly breathes.
“A very good morning.”
Molly giggles, breaking the moment, then turns back to the stove where something is still sizzling away.
“Omelette?”
“Sounds good.” Janine slips into a stool at the counter and watches her work, hips swaying as she hums to herself.
“What’s that, love?”
“Old show tune. It’s silly.”
“Go on then,” Janine challenges, and she can feel Molly’s grin though her back’s to her.
“You’re the cream in my coffee,” Molly croons with a tipsy warble. “You’re the salt in my stew — that's Irish too!” She points at the crockpot, and Janine laughs, Molly’s girlish joy infectious. “You will always be my necessity…” She spins to face Janine. “I’d be lost without you.”
Janine can feel unabashed affection spreading out of her chest, warm and bright, up and out through her cheeks stretched wide in a smile.
“My sweetheart,” she sighs, and it comes out more besotted than she’d intended. Molly blows her a kiss.
“My Irish cream.”

does your office of student affairs have a disability services person? at least for my brother, that person coordinates with all of his profs at the start of each quarter and does follow up a couple times during.
I believe so, although they’ve never been introduced at faculty meetings or anything, and they don’t follow up on students at any point during the term.

oh god how awful. can you refer the student to a campus health clinic or something? are there counseling resources on campus? threats of self harm is likely more than you can deal with as a professor, and as a mandated reporter you need to take steps
I did bcc my dean in my response to the student, and then followed up with another email to her explaining what I think happened (to the student, I said that I wanted to confirm that I understood what he was upset about, so I asked specifically if it was what I suspect); so I’m hoping she gets back to me sooner than later about what to do/what happens next. I have yet to hear back from either of them.

consultingpiskies replied to your post:Why do you like Sally Donavon so much? I don't...
Like literally spend 2 minutes thinking about the character and her motivations. Take what you’re given in canon and actually think about it instead of simplifying it to the lowest common denominator. You know, what you do with your white male faves.

Oh! Yes, “wincest” definitely is that! Sorry to be unclear – and thank you for the help. :)
This was actually a follow up question to someone’s Supernatural fandom stats that I reblogged earlier… That author mentioned that a second non-fandom usage of “wincest” was interfering with their Google results. Then I got the anonymous ask about what that was. I meant to explain that in the tags, but Tumblr iPhone app doesn’t allow tags on ask posts (though you can go back and edit and add them later), and so I forgot to give context. Fixing now...

Regarding the leaving without explaining is abuse post (127150900244), if you click back to the original post, the op added an addendum explaining that it was a personal post about something they were experiencing and not for general reblog. I don't know your policies about this, but it might be a good idea to delete your reblog even though the subsequent replies have good info for a general context.
Thanks for pointing that out! I’ve deleted the post.

summaries are here!! they are anonymous, but numbered. artists, reply or message with the numbers of your top three choices and how many you’d actually like to do (only two artists will need to do two stories and the other two can do one each because there are four artists and six stories this year), and i’ll assign stories mostly based on first come first serve - the first people who claim two they want will get two, first people will get their first choices, etc. stories will be crossed out as they are claimed!
all stories have been claimed!!!
Sherlock Holmes is a dairy farmer in Cumbria living with her lover, journalist Irene Adler. Having overcome their troubles in the past, their life is a satisfying one. That is, until the spring of 2001 when foot and mouth disease strikes the UK. Spreading through the livestock population like wildfire, it shatters the world these two have built for themselves. Enter Captain Joanne Watson, veteran of the Kosovo War, drafted in to help organise the eradication efforts. In a land filled with smoke, flames and gunfire, maybe it is possible for her to make a difference to these people from whom she’s helped take so much. But is there ever such a thing as moving on from such a trauma? And is recovery even possible in the face of so much bloodshed?
Dr. Joan Watson is trans, Sherlock is a girl’s name thank you very much, and they move in together.  Joan goes on hormones, comes out, and kicks more arse than any one person should probably want to.  Sherlock is way more supportive than most ever expected her to be, tries not to stick her foot in her mouth most of the time, and fails completely at being subtle.  They both eat far to much take out, have a row a frankly ridiculous time of the morning, and (inevitably) fall in love.
John and Sherlock meet in the lesbian section of a gay bookstore and become friends. Sherlock needs a flatmate so she invites John to move in. John helps Sherlock in her consulting detective work and also works at a clinic as a GP. After sharing a flat for several months, John finally acts on her feelings toward Sherlock. Sherlock can’t believe that John accepts her totally as she is, without reservation. Also has backstory of Sherlock’s first love, with a girl who rejects her when he finds out she’s trans.
A 34-year-old Joan Watson, who grew up in a small town in the Midlands, returns home after having spent 14 years in the city where she trained to become a nurse during WWII. Now that both her parents are dead and her brother has settled down in London to work as a lawyer, Joan has decided to sell her father’s farm. Soon, she has to realise that returning to her roots isn’t as painless and uncomplicated as she had anticipated. She is confronted with unpleasant memories she had long buried at the back of her mind. If selling the farm and battling with her demons wasn’t difficult enough in itself, a 30-year-old murder case is resurrected and stirs up conflicts within the small community. Then Joan is confronted with Sherlock Holmes who owns the biggest estate in the county. She thinks she can solve the murder and put things back to the way they were. When she enlists Joan’s help, Joan follows her willingly wherever Sherlock chooses to go. The setting is inspired by Peter Strickland’s “The Duke of Burgundy”.
Sherly is a new student in a high school. She’s really quiet. She cuts herself and she usually gets high. Until one day, when she meets Joan. Could Joan save her before it’s too late? It’ll be called “(Won’t you) save me?” (in Spanish, ¿(no) me salvas?).
A femjohnlock au of the 1999 film The Mummy. Jane Watson served with her regiment in the battle at the supposedly mythical city of Hamunaptra, barely escaping it alive, but now she’s washed up in Cairo, with no money and no way out of the prison she got herself put in for getting into a nasty bar fight. Enter Sherlock Holmes, a librarian whose sister raided the gambling den and pub Jane had been frequenting and confiscated something Jane had taken from Hamunaptra. The Holmes sisters arrive unexpectedly to get Jane out of prison under the agreement that she’ll take them to Hamunaptra, and presumably whatever secrets lie there. From there, though, things get a lot more complicated - running into another expedition led by a bastard of a man from her regiment followed by Sherlock accidentally raising the dead and nearly causing what feels like the end of the world sort of complicated.

I think the better question is why wouldn't someone follow you? Seriously, everyone needs more lesbian mermaids in their life.
Tumblr media
Yes, everyone!
Fun story: Last Friday, I was trying to check how much lesbian mermaid art there actually is. But the moment I pressed search button on google image search, I lost my internet connection. For two days!
Coincidence? I think not.

I have been that friend, and I am forever grateful for the people who would occasionally write me even when I was on extended radio silence. Them sharing what was going on in their life even if I couldn’t respond reminded me that others cared.
Thanks for responding and giving me some insight!  My only fear in continuing to send mail has been that I don’t want to bother anyone or intrude on someone’s alone time, but I think it’s better to keep writing, even if it’s not as frequently as when we had regular conversations.

consultingpiskies said:
can you talk some more about how awesome ella is? and how she is actually great for john (shut up mycroft you don’t know what you’re talking about).
I DO think Ella is great for John; what’s more, on his best days, I think John knows it. To me, Ella is in some ways symbolic of what I see the show doing (at least as of the end of S3): slowly and tentatively drawing out emotions from men who would rather bottle them up and hide them somewhere far out of sight. The two times we see her, Ella remains consistent - it’s John who’s changed. The first time he’s clearly there under protest, refusing to give even a little as she tries to get him to talk about all the things he keeps inside. She doesn’t push him harder than he can take, but she’s persistent - as we see later when, after Sherlock falls, John returns to her having clearly made a choice to do so. By this point, where Ella remains as committed to drawing John’s feelings to the surface as ever, John has given up ground in his own battle; which is to say, the emotions are, in fact, closer to the surface - where he’s presumably able to manage them somewhat, for recognizing them.
She’s more of a phantom presence in S3 - the ‘trick cyclist’ that Sholto won’t see. Here, John is on board with his therapy, and he’s even okay talking about it with someone who’s even more emotionally repressed than he was when he started with Ella. It helps, he says, so he goes for a top-up - and how far has he come in being able to say that? That it comes on what’s ostensibly the most overtly emotional day of his life seems, to me, to lend this emotional openness a positive quality that I think can be associated with Ella herself - warm, inviting, caring. That’s what I like about her character - that she’s consistently a voice of gentle reason and emotional honesty for a man who, left to his own devices, would hide behind walls so deep no one would ever be able to touch him. I really hope they bring her back...
(also, seriously, how well has Mycroft’s assessment of ANYTHING having to do with emotion worked out so far??)
(also, she’s lovely and her voice is so warm that I kind of want to sink into her and tell her all MY problems and have her pet my head, so there’s a bit of that going on there as well... ;) ).

also false equivalency. the right to reclaim a word that is used against your community that not all in your community wants to reclaim is not the same as othering and fetishizing a subset of your own community.

I think society places a lot of emphasis on genetic relationships particularly for men since it's harder to confirm paternity. Which is odd since it's not uncommon for men to raise children who they think are, but actually aren't biologically theirs. I don't have kids either, but it's strange to me that people would care more about a genetic connection than an emotional connection. I can understand lying causing difficulties between partners, but that shouldn't affect connection to kids.
*nod nod*  I think you’re right about our society, despite -- or because of? -- the frequency of infidelity.   Though I believe there are some societies that go the opposite direction and don’t recognize patrilineal relationships (fatherhood included) -- just mother, mother’s brother, etc.
I also find the idea of prioritizing genetic connections over emotional connections very odd.  But I guess that my original question also potentially conflated a bunch of different situations -- probably for many (most?) people, if they’d actually had time to form an emotional bond with the child by the time they discovered that they were not genetically related to a child, they would try to preserve that relationship.
(Other folks have had helpful answers & feedback that I probably won’t have time to reshare/respond to tonight because I’m still working -- but thanks, all!!)
