Jimi Hendrix famously sang the phrase “While I kiss the sky” which was heard by thousands as “While I kissed this guy.”

CCR’s popular song originally said, “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Many heard it as “There’s a bathroom on the right.”

Deep Purple’s still-popular chorus (known for its timeless guitar riff) “Smoke on the water/Fire in the sky” was misheard as “Smoke on the water/Fire engine guy.”

Nirvana’s anthem “Smells like Teen Spirit” had the lines, “Here we are now/Entertain us.” They were misheard as, “Here we are now/In containers.”

No one knows why we hear the wrong thing although there are theories. It’s akin to the game of Chinese Whispers where the original line gets progressively distorted into some hilarious garbage by the time it reaches the last guy.

Mondegreens are not restricted to English alone. South Indians, with limited knowledge of Hindi, were taught patriotic songs in Hindi by zealous teachers. A popular one had the repeating phrase, “Bara tamata.” School students sang it with great gusto. Years later, some of them realized the actual words were “Bharat Mata.”

A popular line from Qurbani song, “Aap jaisa koi meri/zindagee mein aaye/ toh baat bun jaaye” was understood as “Aap jaisa koi…toh baap bun jaaye.” The defective version made sense to many who saw Zeenat Aman gyrating on those lyrics while gaping at Feroz Khan.

Many who weren’t familiar with the hill station between Bombay and Pune heard the Gulaami song as “Haathi ka andaa la” until they realized it was “Aati kya Khandala”.

I have a friend, her name is Geeta. Her family called her Gitu. Throughout her childhood and youth, she thought Rajesh Khanna was singing for her, when he said, ”Mere sapnon ki raani kab aaye Gitu”.

'Mondegreen' sounds French but isn't. In 1954, a writer at Harper’s Magazine remembered how as a little girl she misheard an old English ballad. The actual words, saluting a dead war hero, were:

Okay I’m not entirely sure how to word this well so please bear with me.

You’ve written and published both fanfic and original fiction. What happens in your brain to determine if an idea should be fanfic or og? Some of your fanfics feature OC protagonists living through (mostly unchanged) canonical events, but some feature canon protagonists in non-canon events (though you usually seem to not change the canon setting too wildly? I haven’t read through your whole portfolio on ao3 though so correct me if I’m wrong lol). But you could just as easily write canon blorbos in hugely AU settings or plots, and there are other authors who have done so very successfully. So can you speak to where the line is, for you, or what sort of things influence that?

hehehehe I have finally arrived at this question, and I've been pondering it ever since you sent it because I love it, it gave me big thinky thoughts.

I think my process on this can get pretty complicated as I sort of weigh things out. Some of it has to do with how much plot I'm crafting wholesale, but not always. For instance, the entirety of the plot for Indefensible (Ace Attorney fic) was constructed wholesale, because it takes place post-canon, so I had to come up with mystery cases and character arcs on my own and didn't have canon to guide them. Others, I'm using canon as the guide, and even if I'm completely changing canon, that guide was still the starting point.

But I've also shied away a bit from that level of work and didn't turn it into fic. For instance, when I played ME: Andromeda, I toyed with the idea of making a fic, but the work I'd have had to do on the baseline plot was so great that I felt as though I'd have been better served creating original fiction out of that idea rather than a fic. I may return to an Andromeda fic with a slightly different concept at some point, but it didn't vibe with me at that time.

I think the real deciding factor is whether or not I think the story's soul, or heart, relies on something in the IP that's inspiring it. For instance, Indefensible relies on the history the characters already have together and playing on that history. The story wouldn't have worked without Phoenix and Edgeworth and their respective backstories. If I were changing it to original fiction, I'd have needed to lift those backstories, explain them, try to change them to make them original, and then after doing all that I don't think the story would have had the same heart and soul to it. It would have changed the spirit of the thing.

I'm not personally a big fan of just filing off the serial numbers and calling it original, I'm pretty honest with myself about whether or not I'm really relying on someone else's IP to tell a story. So when that IP is really part of the story I'm trying to tell and I'm leaving enough of it unchanged that I feel it's still firmly in the fic category, I keep it as fic. If I feel like I'm changing it so that it's unrecognizable or no longer needs to pull from the source to keep the soul of the story, I start reworking it even more into original fiction.

It can get a lot more complex than that as I weigh each individual part of the whole and decide if it needs the IP or not, but that's the gist of it. It's a lot of kicking at the supports from canon to see if they're load-bearing or not lol

i think what's so fascinating about dtla is that it's so not like other cities of its stature, especially in the us (and canada?). i'm more used to the nyc/chicago style of city where downtown is kind of the "jewel" of the city, the center of both business and tourism and is also very expensive. the financial district part of dtla LOOKS a lot like a city like nyc or chicago in its style of architecture and the fact that it's got all these government buildings and museums but looking at google street view, you can tell it's..... kind of vacant? and while there are hotels and museums around, i can't see much else for tourists to do. and tbh, when i think of tourism in la, i'm not thinking dtla anyways (again, unlike nyc and chicago), i feel like tourists would stick towards hollywood and the beach.

so that's not wholly weird i guess especially for a suburbanized city like la (houston gives me similar vibes) BUT what makes it even more unique to me is what's surrounding the financial district, particularly the "industry" districts and skid row.

i'll start with the industry districts because it's my favorite: there's a bunch of them but i think the biggest ones are the fashion district and the toy district? there's also a pinata one and a flower one too! anyways this area is RIGHT next to the financial district and is a bunch of low-rise wholesale stores that sell (what i think are) mostly imported goods! idk how these places are doing economically but the fact that they STILL EXIST after over 20 years of online shopping is amazing to me, especially for something like toys and pinatas! i've heard of wholesale fashion districts but never anything like toys, pinatas, and flowers. the actual look of it is interesting too: mostly single-story small warehouses, sometimes painted and decorated. it's really interesting and cool!

and then there's skid row which i won't dwell on too much because i don't want to sound like i'm making a judgment call on it... because i really don't know enough to say. but i will say that like the wholesale districts, i'm really surprised it exists just outside of downtown and is such a large area. it's possible i'm ignorant in this, but i've never heard of anything like skid row elsewhere in the US (at least in the last 40 years). but even besides that, it's really fascinating to see what it looks like building-wise on google streetview. i see a surprising amount of construction! i also see a lot of occupied buildings, a surprising amount of which are churches (or "missions"?)! hotels (probably for residents) are also very common. i feel pretty ignorant with the Who, How, and Why of skid row and it's something i'd like to look more into, as well as why dtla has one and no other american cities have one (at least to this extent).

and finally, i think it's fascinating how all these places blend into each other, including how skid row blends into the tourist-friendly little tokyo. all of these places are so different, yet blend into each other in just a few blocks. i try to compare this all to eastern and northern cities like nyc/chicago or hell even rust belt cities like detroit/cleveland/st louis but it just doesn't fit the pattern of how downtowns "should be" compared to any of those. it doesn't even fit the pattern of san francisco, which i have been to. i think the fact that it is so unique is what makes it so interesting!
