#constellation starfield

i made this visual representation of constellation membership over the years using info from the game, bethesda's site, and the wiki, and i think it reveals some interesting things about the explorers group that weren’t otherwise obvious. ofc it’s incomplete because there is a lot we don’t know, but going off this alone we can tell that:

1. constellation membership has always been quite small. there’s a huge gap in the middle there only because we’re lacking for info, but it seems constellation in 2330 is probably the largest it’s been.

2. aja mamasa was chair for a longer period than any other chair. for most of the group’s existence, aja mamasa was the face of constellation.

3. the search for the artifacts only really kicks off after sarah becomes chair. understandably, aja mamasa may not have wanted to begin a pursuit of this mystery during wartime, but she then had plenty of time as chair after the war to dig that artifact back up if she wanted to. putting all other potential reasons for not pursuing the artifacts aside, i think this could speak to the differences in character between sarah and aja: the unrelenting sense of adventure at the core of one chair vs possibly the more cautious, admin-focused nature of the other. now obviously barrett finding that archived artifact in 2326 probably just occurred by chance, but c'mon are you telling me they don't keep a recorded inventory of all their odds and ends?

4. andreja’s joining the group coincides with barrett finding the second artifact. in-game, if you take Barrett to the ka’zaal sulfur mine where he found that second artifact, he mentions that constellation gained another member the day he found it, but he doesn’t say who. the only member who joined the same year (let alone same day) that Barrett found the artifact is andreja. it's also worth noting that va'ruun "zealots" attacked the miners during the initial dig in 2328, and still guard the mine when you and barrett return in 2330. correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think we ever learn any specifics about how/when/why andreja joined other than that she initially joined as a spy for house va'ruun. it seems house va'ruun was after the artifacts as well and andreja had a role in their pursuit of the ka'zaal artifact before joining constellation.

take all this with a grain of salt because there's a good chance i missed some things. but i'd like to hear y'all's thoughts cuz i only made that andreja connection after making this :)

Little things I learned about the members of Constellation:

- Andreja feels like an outcast to the rest of the group and doesn’t feel like she’s included in their group activities.

- On the flip side, Barrett will try to invite Andreja to join him and the others in said activities and she always declines (this includes things like movie night, dancing, cooking, listening to music, board games and having drinks together)

- The members all get together to have movie night and take turns picking out the movies

- Andreja tries so hard to make jokes with Barrett but he always knows what she’s gonna say. She gets discouraged but keeps trying

- Barrett and Vlad once spent 5k of Constellation’s credits to throw a party on The Eye

- Sarah is completely against Sam bringing Cora along with him. She suggests leaving Cora with Matteo to ensure her safety. Sam becomes irritated and defensive and says Cora goes with him.

- Sam and Barrett are sports bros and love watching games together. If one of them isn’t around to watch the game, the other will record it so they can watch it together later

- Sam has terrible spelling

- Barrett is actually his last name. His first name starts with A but (as far as I know) we don’t know what the A stands for

- Sarah seems to fill a kind of motherly role of the group, checking in with Barrett after being held hostage by pirates, keeping Sam on track, watching out for Cora, reassuring Andreja, etc

- Sam and Barrett seem to cause the most trouble or make the most mistakes in the group. Barrett will try to joke and laugh it off until Sarah threatens punishment. Sam however can get grumpy and irritated when “Sarah Perfect Morgan” calls him out on it.

- Andreja has some knowledge in cooking

- Barrett does as well and will cook large meals for the group

- Cora will occasionally take some of Barrett’s stuff, usually books, without asking leading to Barrett going to Sam to get them back

- Sam seems to get easily distracted while on missions. “Sam, did you check out that thing I asked you to?” “Well I was going to but then I got caught in a goose chase-” “So did you or not?” “I was going to but then there was this thing-” “Should I just assign someone else?” “Uh that would probably be best”

- Andreja really wants to teach Cora self defense and how to fight and use a weapon. Sam is uncomfortable with it and tries to brush Andreja off. She doesn’t get the hint though

- Sam keeps an open tab at the bookstore in Akila City for Cora. She's supposed to be cut off at 100 credits but tends to overspend

- The stress Sarah is under must be obvious to the other members as multiple members of Constellation will ask if she is doing ok

- Barrett tries to get Noel to join them in space but she declines and reveals how much she is overworking herself. She then admits that she had nothing but her smarts to get her ahead in life

- Sarah is Cora’s favorite member of Constellation. Sam is her second favorite

- Not knowing where Andreja is from and her backstory drives Matteo crazy. He will vent to Sam about it who tells him to let it go and everyone is allowed their secrets

- Aja recruited Barrett into Constellation

- Sarah and Vlad recruited Andreja into Constellation

- At one point in his life, some people called Sam “Sammy”, he now detests the name and “goes by just Sam now”

- While Barrett was grieving, Aja sat with him in his room. He doesn't remember what she said but her presence was comforting and that’s what he remembers most

- Despite not having many credits himself, Sam is willing to help out those in need whether it's loaning credits to Barrett, keeping an open book tab for Cora or donating to those in need.

- Sarah is not afraid to ask Walter for money. They have some banter back and forth but Walter always signs the check

- Nadia at SSNN tries to get Sam to dig up dirt on Jacob. Despite the estranged relationship with his dad, Sam refuses

- Barrett and Sam have both been to jail at least once

- Sam and Sarah have an ongoing debate over which is the superior beer. Sarah suggests they go bar hopping one day to test their theory.

see, the thing about starfield, is that if i were my character - not just any space explorer, but specifically my character, as a member of Constellation, in the setting of starfield - i would be so content and happy in that life.

i would love the day-to-day domesticity of the lodge, being around people who not only enrich your life in an academic sense, but are truly family.

like, everything. the little things. the meals, the conversations, the debates, the learning, the helping and growing, the movie nights, the game nights, the quiet calm reading by the fire, the cookie days, wondering what Barrett is cooking, what Noel is currently researching, what book Cora’s reading at the moment. being part of everyone’s life as much as they’re all a part of yours and each others’. Helping Sarah through and overcome her fear, anger, grief, doubts. Falling in love and getting married?Helping Andreja open up to the rest of the group, growing closer as a family. The appreciation for science, history, art, culture, humanity. That eager excitement on the cusp of learning something new, either out in the field or among anxious chatter as Sarah calls a meeting. that inexhaustible wonder always ever so present. Visiting the Eye. I would love to spend some time up there, just learning all the equipment and how everything works. And hearing Vlad’s stories from his time in the Fleet. Hearing all their stories. And telling them mine. This positive feedback loop of care, wonder, love, learning, happiness, and hunger, intertwined.

And then traveling space together with the people you care about??! finally commissioning a bigger ship for us, being able to travel as a group on longer, further expeditions when the want or if the need arises. And the day-to-day that comes with that. The dynamic of being cramped on a ship, sure, but it doesn’t matter because you’re with people you love, all doing something you love. Being among the beauty of the cosmos, encountering so many interesting people, the thrill of piloting, even the routine maintenance, and the tired evenings after a day of exploration. Peering into space for hours contemplating everything. Landing on a barren moon and basking in its serenity. Being awestruck at the beauty of a planet lush with diverse life.

It is so much but it is all wonderfully appealing.

More than just an interesting pipe dream – It would be truly fulfilling for me.

Insane how deeply this game resonates with me. How it speaks to me and appeals to this side of me which I love, but has been so starved. “You’re part of Constellation now…” -yes, Sarah, you don’t know much I actually wish that were true.

Sarah Morgan, my beloved.

Sarah is a critically under appreciated character. She's more than meets the eye--she's not bossy, cold and high-strung. Quite the opposite. She took in Andreja, and never told the other members about Andreja's past. She checks in with her about the deliveries to House Va'runn and seems to even help out Andreja and Vladimir with these.

She's a kind, compassionate leader. Hell, most of her quest is about how she shut herself away from others, how terrified she was that what happened to her department and crew would happen to Constellation. She's genuinely worried that her leadership wouldn't be enough, that her unquenchable thirst for knowledge would destroy all that she worked for.

As you get to know her better, you get to see the hues of grey in her personality and worldview. She's angry and sad, and has been hiding it for so long that she let herself become the caricature that some other players hate. But at the core, she's a woman who'd do anything for science and discovery, while always striving to protect her people. Her romance is sweet, full of doubts as she slowly lets her walls come down.

So before you start hating on her character, take the time to get to know her, I am certain that'll change your perspective on her.
