i’m going to do a constantine hot take that isn’t new but that i still feel STRONGLY about: john’s costuming in the show WAS BAD and OOC. the point is for him to START OFF with his tie and his trench coat looking MOSTLY respectable and then his shit garbage life and choices lead to him being a mess at the end of the day. if he STARTS OFF that way it makes John seems UNBEARABLY mannered and pretentious (i am still not over the scene where we see him INTENTIONALLY put his tie on weird) which is not, historically, a John trait.
the costuming for zed is fine and the costuming for chas is A+ BUT john’s #look annoyed me even back in 2014 and it ESP annoys me now that LoT has doubled down on it and now seems to emphasis the burberry of it all (also i hate the Lot lounging robe or whatever -- like i know this isn’t a LoT hottake but istg we KNOW what john lounges around in when he’s by himself:
1) naked (per OG Hellblazer and CtH)
2) button down shirt no tie no trousers (per Constantine)
3) sleeveless undershirt + dark slacks (per Hellblazer)
Any of these options is acceptable.)
oh another hot take that i’m maybe less historically open about: i like the idea of zed and the actress is fine but the execution of her as a character made SO little sense to me -- presumably it would’ve been built on if the show had continued but WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED THERE. But it’s frustrating for a character that did have potential to a) be shuffled around so much bc the show was so bad at juggling its main cast from episode to episode and b) lose out on most chances for development because of that.
anyway i’m still sad about it. i’m sure i would’ve grown to dislike the show (i dislike at least half of the episodes) but there was POTENTIAL and i find it annoying that so many other DCTV shows have managed to prosper, though i’m glad Constantine was never on the CW.
