@bigcats-birds-and-books tagged me to post some books I want to finish before the end of the year, and @wearethekat tagged me to post some I want to read next year! Since I generally am not planning super far ahead on my own reading, and I have no books I feel I must finish by Dec 31, I'm doing a combo list! Here's some stuff I want to read next (with "next" meaning probably sometime within the next couple months).
The Alpine Zen, by Mary Daheim - For the end of November and the beginning of December, I was just binge-reading a 26-book (it's alphabetical) mysteries series on Libby. It's not a perfect series, but it's good enough that I was sucked in, and I have more time for reading this time of year. Unfortunately, my county's Libby doesn't have the last book in the series!!! Luckily, I was already starting to get less invested by book 24 or so, but I sure would like to see how it wraps up. So putting a pin in this one.
To Live and Die in Dixie, by Kathy Hogan Trocheck - While suffering withdrawal from the above series, I've been poking around looking for a new (maybe shorter) mystery series to distract me. This is book 2 in a promising one. When I say I will read this next, I really mean it - I'll probably be reading it tomorrow.
Conrad's Fate and The Pinhoe Egg, by Diana Wynne Jones - I was doing a spur-of-the-moment reread of the Chrestomanci series this fall, and stopped at these two, so I'd like to pick them back up and finish the reread so I can make more posts about it!
The Signal and the Noise, by Nate Silver - This is a book I need to just grit my teeth and finish - nonfiction, interesting in some ways, I think Nate Silver is smart but that doesn't mean I always agree with how he thinks about things. I got further this time than the last time I tried to read this book several years ago, but I haven't picked it up in like a month or two.
Braiding Sweetgrass, by Robin Wall Kimmerer - This probably is a 2025 book, because I asked for it for Christmas and I think it will be a good book to read slowly in between other things! So assuming my parents follow through and I receive it...
I also have this urge to read The Odyssey, probably the Emily Wilson translation, but my library copy keeps coming due before I get very far. So that may be an eventual 2025 project and/or purchase.
I have not been poking around the most recent posts on tumblr in a minute, and also I combined tag things here, so I'm just going to take the route of saying: if you want to make a list like this, please do! and tag me in it! open invite!

"He also said he was sorry to lose me, because I seemed to be the only person who could make Christopher see sense. I am not sure anyone can do that, but Christopher seems to think so, too. He has asked me to come back next year to be best man at his wedding. He and Millie are using the gold ring with Christopher’s life in it as a wedding ring, which seems a good way to keep it safe."

🎄Romance Advent🎄 Day 13: Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole
Tumblr media
One-sentence summary: Blood-maddened vampire assassin Conrad is taken to an old mansion to detox, only to realize that the beautiful dancer he sees (and can speak to) is not a hallucination, but a ghost.
Why read it: I mean, aside from that insane summary, this is a great entry point to Immortals After Dark, and has a hero who is, by IAD standards, baby? I mean, he can and will kill anyone who touches his woman and, again, is clinically insane, but Conrad is allso so wounded and so sweet at his core, and also, much to his eternal embarrassment, a vIRGIN (something his brother loudly points out in front of his ghost girlfriend). And Neomi, our heroine, makes it even better. She's funny, she's angry, she's flirty, and Conrad's brokenness calls to her own in a way that's just gorgeous.
Lives in my brain rent-free: Conrad is in the shower, really determined to ignore the Sexy Ghost Lady because SURELY she's in his head, right? And Neomi, rather determined to get him to break and a former burlesque performer, begins doing an elaborate striptease with lines like "Does Conrad want to see my panties?" (He does. As previously mentioned, Conrad is a 300-year old-virgin.) GOLD. QUEEN SHIT.

Take: Chrestomanci (chris’s edition) actually just has some kind of dad power because everytime he goes Anywhere he collects like 6 more children.
Magicians of Caprona??? Tonino is literally going to stay in his castle. He knows Angelica by Name and reputation and clearly knows all the kids well enough to make jokes?? Also all of his jokes are terrible and absolutely no one fin them funny. He makes dad jokes.
Witch Week? Man appeared in an alternate timeline and then metaphorically adopted a bunch of orphans apart from Brian. Estelle is obsessed w that man and you can’t tell me that Nirupam, Nan and Charles who collectively have about like half? a parental figure did not see Chrestomanci validate them and their abilities Once and go wow! parent!
Cat and Janet??? Like not Gwendolyn obviously because she’s too busy being evil i guess but he rly went oh no! Children in trouble! I could do literally anything else Or i could adopt them. they’re mine now.
Chrestomanci is gonna be that guy who comes home to 17 children in his kitchen screaming and is like yeah. this is the life. i need more.

What's a book/series you wish more people knew about and/or posted about on booksta?
The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones is one of those series for me. I read the first two books (Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant) in elementary school and have been obsessed ever since. For the longest time it was the only thing I could actually reread and not get bored with.
There are very few other series from my childhood that I'm still super into. But between DWJ's writing and the chaos of Christopher, I'm never not laughing in my rereads. I was also lucky enough to find the whole rainbow edition singles at my local HPB a while back. Which means I can FINALLY read the short stories in Mixed Magics.
Swipe for a surprise!

Okay how you like my strange tastes? Because after some my posts abt resident evil i gonna write abt (suddenly) the chronicles of chrestomanci
Yeah, i didn't read all books from the chronicles. But i think these books must be more famous. And it's a problem. Cause everything become more popular if it was filmed. Films always more popular than books. But THE CHRONICLES OF CHRESTOMANCI are deserved adaptation and glory. Many people know "The Howl's moving castle" because this was filmed by Hayao Miyazaki. I would give everything what i have for see what would Christopher Chant look like. And i wanna say that "Conrad's fate" is deserved more glory and fanats bc oh gosh there are two cute sweet teen boys it's Conrad (Grant) Tesdinic and god damn TEEN CHRISTOPHER CHANT. I gonna fight for this book. I love it love it LOVE IT. I guess the chronicles of chrestomanci is the best books what need a film adaptations, more fanats, more addition, more content, more glory and more more more everything.
