Bod Thai

I beamed with pride as I held the package, the promised t-shirt it contained weighing it down. I cut the corner, increasing my anticipation. A smaller white package awaited me. My heart warmed as I unfolded the shirt, a picture of my new best friend staring back at me. I set it aside, turning my attention to the smaller package. I carefully unpeeled the flap, using my index finger and thumb to the two of paper it held. The first was a copy of Bod Thai’s birth certificate. The second was a letter from the World Wild Life organization.

               Dear New Parent,

    Welcome to our family! You have made a wonderful decision in choosing to adopt Bod Thai. Due to an increasing interest in ivory, elephants have been made victims of poachers and other entities that place more value on external qualities, tusks, versus their internal qualities. The African and Asian elephants are in being taken advantage of, the former classified as an endangered species. Despite being the land mammal on the world, Elephants are peaceful and selfless characters of love. It is our organization’s job to provide protection for these gentle creatures. We are their voice. While we have saved countless lives and have influenced some changes in the legal system, we still have a long way to go before we can eliminate or further limit activities such as poaching and big game hunting.

    Elephants have a right to roam their habitat with the same freedom as they have for the millions of years their existence. Together, we can help make the world a safer place for them, something all living things deserve.

    As promised, every month, you will receive a report on Bod Thai’s growth and progress, in addition to a photo. You will have direct access to his caretaker and an open line of communication.

    I must have stared at the picture for the next ten minutes. I felt a pull toward the majestic animal despite not having yet met him. He wasn’t just an elephant to me. He was a baby, my baby. I imagined us playing together in the open plains, laughing and frolicking under the cloudless sky. We would go swimming in his favorite watering hole and it would only take from powerful blow his trunk to dry me. At night, we would star gaze. I guessed him to be an expert astronomer, able to point out the different constellations.

Ours was a connection of the heart. In that moment, I made the decision that I was going to meet him. After all, I was his mother. My first order of business what to learn everything I could about the species.

These are some of the facts I found:

Elephants love water

Elephants can pick up a grain of rice with their trunks

Baby elephants are born blind

Elephants are more afraid of ants and bees than they are mice

Elephants can live up to 70 years

Elephants can hear the trumpet of another elephant from 6 miles away

Elephants trunks have 40,000 muscles

Elephant comes from the word elephas, which translates to ivory

An adult male’s tusks grows up to 7 inches a year

Elephants can recognize themselves in the mirror
