THIS SO SO MUCH.
And there could be a reason for people doing this!
In my previous reblog about this I mentioned severe untreated OCD... and this ties in with that, it could also be part of being Neurodivergent, a form of Synesthesia, or extreme sensitive according to Google.
You know how kids have attachments to their toys and stuffed animals and think they have feelings and if they throw them or hit them they instantly feel bad? Sometimes that extends to adulthood for various reasons. I attribute feelings to my stuffed animals and I treat them with care and respect because I actually believe/feel they have feelings. My rational mind KNOWS they are objects, but my emotions feel otherwise, hence why I treat them the way I do: I brush them out, give them lukewarm baths, make sure any tear or wear is fixed, etc.
One could argue that anyone who cares about their stuff and wants to extend the life of that stuff will do this right? Yes, but when someone attributes feelings and human traits to things this takes on a whole new meaning. You're actually caring for "someone", even it's not a someONE but a someTHING.
Why does this happen? Usually it's a comfort thing due to trauma, but it can come with mental illness or mental disorders that make it hard for the person to connecto to other humans.
In my case it's due to the BPD, possible AuADHD, and the OCD, the BPD and possible AuADHD make me overly sensitive to everything around me and I can't connect to people that easily even though I love having friends; so for ages I connected to my stuffed animals and they were my friends. And the OCD only makes that reaction and attitude worse because of the intrusive thoughts. Through therapy I've learned that yes, stuffies are object but that I also can love them with all my heart and that's okay. What's not okay is to obsess over them as if they were real people and to learn to create connections with other humans. I also have two forms of synesthesia, grapheme-colour and ordinal linguistic personification, the latter making this personification of my stuffies even more pronounced.
Okay enough about me; sorry, I just needed to put myself as an example so I could more or less explain how these things work.
As you can see, this is a natural phenomenon in children that can extend towards adulthood.
How does this affect fandom and how characters are view you may ask? Simple.
PEOPLE ARE ATTRIBUTING HUMAN/PERSONAL TRAITS TO CHARACTERS, WHICH AREN'T HUMAN (NOT HUMANS AS A SPECIES, BUT HUMANS AS IN IRL HUMAN BEINGS) AND ARE OBJECTS LIKE DOLLS.
General Fandom spaces are full of people who use them as a coping mechanisms and community hubs to meet people. A TON of us are ND or have trauma or mental problems that make it hard for us to connect to others so we resort to fictional characters and the fandoms that follow them for that. Sadly due to how common drama is in fandom so so many of us end up not having a circle of friends, irl or online, with whom to discuss our interests, effectively isolating us a little in our fandoms. What do we resort to then? THE CHARACTERS THEMSELVES.
When mental health problems go unchecked and someone is what we call chronically online, or has problems connecting to real humans and spends most of their time logged into the net and not really having conversations and interactions, stuff like Personification can be exacerbated to the point where we are now; where people can't see the difference between a real human and a character.
AND THIS IS VERY SAD. What does it say about us as a society when the last two generations have gone through this and the two new ones are doubling down on it?? What does it say about how we connect to the people around us?? What does it say about how we as a society and species manage trauma and mental health?!
And that's where purity culture and antis enter: THEY SEE PEOPLE DOING PERSONIFICATION AND THEY TAKE THAT TO PUSH THEIR WEIRD PURITY AGENDA ONTO THEM, TRYING TO FORCE FANDOMS TO BE AS "NOBLE" AND "GOOD PEOPLE" AS THEY THINK THEY ARE. And these are mostly conservative people who are ticked off by what they deem "too different". The way intrusive thoughts, kinks, dark thoughts, etc is treated currently is APPALLING, "this speaks more about you as a person!" really?! Honey, NO. People are allowed to explore the darkest deepest confines of their inner selves IN A SAFE AND NOT RISKY MANNER THROUGH IMAGINATION. Who are you to stop them from doing that? Do you actually think everyone who is like this is a serial killer or rapist?! Do you know how rare those truly are? And do you actually know how incredibly "normal" real rapists appear? Ask me, I'll tell you how "normal" they look.
In truth, treating fandoms and character this way protects nobody and puts nobody in their places but EFFECTIVELY MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO KNOW REALITY FROM FICTION AND OPENS THE DOOR FOR MORE ABUSERS TO CONTINUE ABUSIVE UNCHECKED. Plus it makes mentally ill people way more vulnerable to manipulation...
I'm sorry I rambled, I hope it makes sense, but... I just wanted to put this out there, see if anyone agrees and what others think of it. I feel that this explains at least in some part what's been happening to Fandom in the last like 15-20 years...
I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:
Fictional characters are objects.
They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.

Disclaimer: this got a bit long
Part of the reason old technology doesn't hang around in large numbers is because it breaks down. Time is the enemy of all things, basically. Even without planned obsolescence, things just wear down over time.
As old things break over time, there are fewer and fewer of those things left in the world, which reduces demand for parts to repair them and for technicians who know how.
Example:
50 years ago, a car company had a factory working at full capacity creating parts for its car models that were current at the time. There were hundreds/thousands of these cars in service then, that needed these parts.
But now, say a quarter of those cars that used that part were in a car accident sometime in the past 50 years that made them unusable.
Half of them just wore down over time and the people who owned them (maybe that car's 3rd/4th/5th owner) either didn't have much emotional attachment to them to want to maintain them, or didn't have the skills or money to repair them. So they got rid of the car, and it's no longer being used.
That leaves only ¼ of the original number of cars from 50 years ago still in service. Of those, some are owned by people who are "collectors" and don't want wear and tear, so hardly drive them around - so they only need one or two replacement parts every 5-10 years maybe.
So the factory that once was creating these parts at full capacity now is only producing ¼ of what it once did. The company that runs that factory has made other cars in the past 50 years, that use different parts ... they could buy more land, build another factory, and leave their old ones running but less productive, or they could dismantle some of the old machines so they can reuse their existing space for what they're currently producing lots of. It's a trade-off.
So you'd need to consider -
Do companies continue production of old parts/products? The machines used in manufacturing count as technology too, so do those stay in service, or do they update production methods with better machines over time?
If they do keep old manufacturing methods up and running, how do they expand operation to produce new parts? (Remember this would apply to every type of company that manufactures something, so this is a widespread thing!) Do they build upwards, creating tall factory buildings? Do they expand outwards instead? How does this impact things like the amount of farmland available? And how do they handle having enough trained employees to run both the old and the new?
If you don't want to deal with that whole thing, you could go an alternate route where new technology/new parts are all designed to be backwards-compatible. That way you can continue to use your old manufacturing resources (factories, machinery, trained people, etc), and you don't have the issue of "this old thing can't be fixed anymore because nobody makes the part I need."
This idea also has implications that you'd need to consider, what kind of effect this approach would have on society/technological development.
It would pretty much completely knock out planned obsolescence, for one thing. Companies wouldn't change minor things in their products just so that you have to buy the new version. You'd be able to repair things for much longer. Things would also probably be easier to repair because there wouldn't be as much difference between product versions in different years.
However, making everything backwards-compatible would also have an affect on how quickly improvements are made, and how they're prioritized.
So consider a few real-world examples:
Over the past 20 or so years, we switched from incandescent light bulbs to more energy-efficient bulbs. But the screw-in base and general bulb size stayed the same. The new bulbs were an improvement, but were backwards-compatible with existing lamps and light fixtures.
A lot of cell phones in the flip-phone era used mini-USB to charge. There were some devices other than phones that used the same connector for charging. Then we switched to micro-USB. As phones became more common and almost everyone already owned several micro-USB chargers, almost everything started using micro-USB to charge. Now we've started to switch to USB-C. You can now easily find USB-C chargers and micro-USB chargers, but mini-USB is harder to find now. In another 10 years, will mini-USB still be around? How about micro-USB?
Newly released console games only run on the console they're designed for. A game for the PS5 wouldn't be able to run on the original PlayStation that was built in 1995. A PC game has minimum system requirements, anything less than that and it really won't run. We've made huge and quick improvements in computer technology. Games and programs created now use more resources than old computers even had. And we can take advantage of new technologies to do new things that weren't possible before.
If all/most software was designed to be backwards-compatible, it wouldn't be able to take advantage of those new technologies, and couldn't have new features that weren't possible before. Depending on how far back you'd want your backwards-compatibility to go ... would be games have to run on a console from the 90s? How about the room-sized computers that we had in the 60s or 70s? Or punch-card computers?
We do have a lot of "form factor" compatibility in computer components. The PCIe slot (the slot that you plug expansion cards like a graphics card into on a motherboard) has been around since 2003 (20 years!). Things that fit in the slot in 2003 would still fit today, and vice versa, even if the hardware wasn't compatible. Power supplies have been a standard height to fit in cases for a very long time, and there are standardized places for the screw holes that you use to attach your motherboard to the case.
The USB standard has been around since 1998, and that includes not only physical connector size and shape, but how data is transferred, voltage, etc. The standard has been updated to allow for improvements - but a USB device from 1998 should work with a computer today (at least on the hardware end). And if you plugged a USB device from 2023 into a computer from 1998, it has a possibility of working.
I guess that leads me to another thing that would probably be common in your society: industry standards.
Industry standards (like the USB specification) are a way for things from many different manufacturers to be inter-compatible with each other, at the time of manufacture. But lots of industry standards also lay out things like backward/forward-compatibility. You can say "this is what the specification is now, and any new devices/items must be able to interface with devices/items from previous versions of the specification."
I don't really have a conclusion. Just a collection of thoughts.

How can I have a world that improves technology but also doesn't remove obsolete technology? Obviously not all obsolete technology, ones too dangerous, doesn't have enough safety features etc, why of course they can go. Let's first start with things like computers. Clearly older things no longer run on newer computers, but it erases things that were made on old types. I want a society that actually preserves those old things and still has new things made with the old technology. If it's a car, well, obviously poor safety features do have to be gone, but any technology that can be kept stays - I suppose you can say retro but definitely trying to follow the old technology as much as possible.
Licorice: You can have this world by making it like the world you’re living in right now. Human beings have a tendency to get very attached to their old technology and invest a great deal of time and effort keeping it in working order, as vintage car rallies can attest. Of course, if you want to drive your vintage car on a public road you have to make sure it meets emissions requirements, is fitted with seat-belts, and fulfils all the other safety regulations. 
Technology very rarely gets removed, it’s simply superseded by something that does the same job better - but “better” is a subjective concept. It depends on what any given individual is looking for in their tech. For example, whenever I have to replace an appliance in my home I try to find a second-hand item that pre-dates ‘smart’ technology. They are easier and cheaper to repair, last longer, and have fewer things that can go wrong with them. 
Nowadays we have tablets and photoshop but people still make art using brushes, charcoal, paint and canvas. We have Google docs but people still write their novels by hand. We have electric cars but people still drive horse-drawn buggies as a hobby, and also as a competitive sport. In fact the only field in which I imagine obsolete tech really does completely disappear is in STEM, but even then there are probably hobbyists who lovingly maintain and use these old tools. 
In short, people hanging on to and lovingly using their old tech is just a normal thing that people do.
Tex: People keep around objectively dangerous technologies all the time as novelty or historical items (see: all the mercury in things, or radioactive materials), and will create entire hobbies around developing patches across technological eras (see: phonographs with USB ports, old video games in emulators on your computer) as a niche skill set. At that point it becomes history, and people work to preserve it for a variety of reasons. As Licorice said, the world you’re looking for is the world you’re already living in. What sort of technologies were you having in mind? There’s a fair chance some hobby groups are out there preserving, restoring, and using exactly that.
Feral: In addition to what Licorice and Tex have already said, I recommend that you look into planned obsolescence and understand that it is not actually necessary for a lot of slightly-less-than-new technologies to no longer be usable the way we often see with Smart devices. It’s a purposefully built in and added feature that could easily be left out.
