Maybe it would be rather weird for Nao to think this, but it was rather unfortunate that they didn't end up in a trap made and planned by John Kramer, the person who actually started this whole insanity.                    being a girlfriend wasn’t something that isabel would put in her resumee, because she knew anything about it that stuff, she still saw herself as a mischievous kid who would saw romantic stuff or couples in the street in the same level of gross as watching a person vomit, who would cringe so hard if had to ask about those topics to her parents — or her older brother cause god knows where was the alcoholic woman in europe. however, something with noah made her being more cheerful and support that she ever thought she would be as a person. still she would just assume to herself that she agreed to miss a day of her work in the restaurant would restore her strength and mostly important about the fact if she would made noah company as moral support in his sort of work meeting, isabel didn’t knew exactly how an independent moviemaker works his away to get paid but she would go anywhere to make noah less nervous, especially knowing that he would get busy making his own graft than watching movies all day making her watching or not but she would have to listen to him point out stuff about it anyways. she treasures noah more than she should and seeing him getting excited about stuff that he enjoyed was cute and she would never make him stop talking about that but as herself isabel didn’t like movies, she never really paid attention to any type of genre and they just helped her to sleep earlier and it was one of the effective and creative ways of making out — if you not into someone who is a cinematographic fan because those people, as her new boyfriend was in that group, sometimes he would watch until the end and not shut his mouth which was annoying at some points. but if it is one of the things likes the most in the world after her, unfortunately, she would try her best to hear him out and support him in anyways because unfortunately, noah showed to be one of the sweetest boy isabel ever hang out with. and that was incredible because she would never imagine that the dude who would always appear on chinese restaurent just because he had a crush on her and would ordering everything in the menu and eating everything at the same time to spend hours in there and without getting any diseases and it was disgusting to seeing him eating sometimes would be actually such a nice and interesting person who just deserve everything good in his life because noah was smart, he was polite, he was funny, and he became that one person isabel didn’t want to loosen up. and all those great things were floating into isabel mind while she was eating some hot dog in the street waiting for noah getting out of whatever he was doing but she hoped it had turned good because she was starting getting nervous as the time was passing by. she decided to play on her phone taking some pictures while sitting in the corner of the bench because the weather looked nice and she was pretty. focusing on the pose she didn’t saw noah getting out of the place but she got scared when he appeared out nowhere screaming in her front but she didn’t feel like screaming to him because the second he saw his smile she knew that was some good news he receives and of course she would reject his kiss who looked really desperate because he didn’t care to put her to lay down on the bench between a lot of korean people walking by the street while kissing that made isabel laugh between it while locking her arms in his neck. ‘ okay silly, the concrete in here is getting hot. ’ he pushed her boyfriend to the ground punching him in the arm again when she heard his nasty reply to hers. ‘ no seriously i want to know what happened. tell me everything. ’

Joni Void Interview: Wordless Stories

Mise en abyme refers to putting a copy of an image within itself, but for the Joni Void album of the same name, it’s more like a story within a story. So it normally goes for Montreal-based producer Jean Cousin. Like his debut under the Joni Void moniker (he previously went by johnny_ripper), 2017′s Selfless, Mise En Abyme includes vocal samples of Cousin’s various friends and collaborators in music, though their output is wordless, their voices chopped and screwed and pitch-shifted out of recognition. What he truly experiments with on the second half of the album is including his own voice, also highly processed and at one point funneled through a text-to-speech generator. In a Skype conversation last month from his home in Montreal, Cousin referred to the album as, simply, his “most personal,” and while you may have a hard time believing that an album without a human-sounding voice is “personal,” that’s not the point of Mise En Abyme. “It’s an album about spaces and places in your life, which is why the songs have room sounds and an atmosphere,” Cousin told me. “They were in specific rooms, and some of them have a deep meaning for me. It was more that I was trying to go for: the meaning of space and time enclosed in one room.”

Yet, Cousin knows that as listeners, our associations transcend a physical area. On Mise En Abyme, he uses elements that are recognizable, generic, and borderline stock to an advantage, allowing the audience to make their own new or memory-based associations with the music while fully knowing he’s expressing his own. “Non-Dit”’s primary percussion is spoken clicks, sounding like they’re coming from a human. “No Reply”, which according to Cousin acts as a transition between the two sides of the album--“communication by phone, isolating yourself”--includes those ever-anxiety inducing DSL connection and busy signals, plus the utilitarian “You have no messages” voice. The voices on “Voix Sans Issue” sound like sirens; over a shuffling, sneezing beat, you just want to dance, the song turning into wild techno.

Even further, the self-referential aspect of Mise En Abyme makes it not only a story within a story but a sort of self-sustaining environment. Catherine Debard’s voice on “Lov-ender” sounds a lot like Ayuko Goto’s (aka Noah) wordless melody on “Dysfunctional Helper”. Closer “Resolve” samples bits of previous songs; Cousin attributes that pattern, which appears in many of his releases, to the influence of film on his work. “It was always important to me for the closing track to have a self-referential, end credits feel,” he said. Overall, it makes for a more democratic listening process. “I always want my music to be accessible in some form,” he said. “I am definitely against academic notions of music.”

Still, it’s not like doing research takes away from enjoying Mise En Abyme; knowing nuggets of context, from unexpected samples to strange composition processes certainly makes you appreciate its idiosyncrasies more. It turns out Cousin’s a pop punk fan; “Safe House” samples an unrecognizable version of the title track from Lagwagon’s 2005 album Resolve. “That album was really one of the most important albums for me,” said Cousin. “One of the rare pop punk albums from my childhood that I still listen to. I actually have a vinyl copy. They wrote it after their drummer committed suicide. It’s this pop punk band writing pop punk songs about girls writing a very mature album, and experimental sound-wise.” “Persistence”, meanwhile, features a minimal, melancholy Rhodes line taken from an in progress johnny_ripper track that ended up being the only survivor of a corrupted hard drive. “Deep Impression”, the bleakest track on the album, where Cousin raps his anxieties and self-doubt through a text-to-speech generator, was originally supposed to feature his voice unedited. “I wanted to make sure there were enough syllables to fit with the beat, so I exported the text to voice and placed it on the meter and realized it sounds much better than if I tried to record it by myself,” he laughed. “There was also the aspect of having the computer voice say the lyrics--it represents this digital abstract entity that is my music,” he said. “It’s not technically this human voice, but it is one.”

Many of the songs on Mise en Abyme do have a beat, though to Cousin, it’s his most ambient album. He comes from a line of hard beat making influenced by instrumental hip hop and Boards of Canada but enjoys using beats that are progressive, emanating from field recordings or live drums rather than a loop. “Ambient music is perceived as being passive, but almost the absence of having that beat, you’re imagining your own feeling to it,” he said. He’s been doing much more live performance and improvisation and exploring deconstructed songs. He’s not totally abandoning beats--his next album is apparently going to be an experimental rap album--but “no BPM” songs is something now firmly in his arsenal. He’s continuing to perform live, coming up specifically at home and in Japan, collaborating with N Nao opening for Mary Jane Leach at Église Saint-Édouard in Montreal next month, which will include a performance of their Mise En Abyme collaborative track “Non-Dit”. As Cousin continues to add to his story, so too does he expand his universe, open enough to let everybody in while still remaining tightly knit and intimate.

At least the pain was somewhat bearable. And they could still walk so that was a good thing too. The adrenaline hit was probably of a big help to keep him moving, too. Of course, none of this was ideal, it would have been much better if Nao hadn't ended up here, but now that they were getting out of this place, it was better than needing to be carried by Noah. As they followed the other, they managed to rip a bit of cloth that they could tie around a wound that felt deeper than the rest; just something to keep it from bleeding further until they get to a better place where they could check on the wounds at peace, more or less. "Where to?"

“Exactly,” is the best that Noah can express. He knows that there’s nothing he can really say to make Nao feel better about what has happened. He lived, that’s kind of the best that either one of them could say for the moment. He didn’t want to talk about his own background, he didn’t want to have to explain to Nao how he ended up in this situation. He had liked that Nao didn’t know that part of him. “Very good idea,” he said, already leading the way out of the room. He was keeping an eye out for anything that might be off about the area. Because he knew that Mark Hoffman wasn’t a total idiot. He probably already knew that Noah knew Nao. That might have been something that was behind deciding to do such a thing to someone that really didn’t seem to deserve it. There was a possibility that it wasn’t the only trap and Noah really wasn’t in the mood to try and survive.

"Damn." It was the only thing they could say. Not only due to exhaustion and probably quite a bit of blood loss from his wounds, Nao couldn't exactly track how much he lost in a situation like this. But what else could they say? That this was totally fucked up? They both knew that already. It was inevitable. Even if the puppeteer who started it all was gone now, there were those crazy enough to continue with the games. And people like Nao and Noah were unfortunate enough to become just another cogs. After finally getting released, Nao got out of that damned death machine and rubbed their arms. "Let's just- Let's get out of here." They could talk elsewhere. While they were still playing, Nao thought that they saw a camera somewhere, they wouldn't be surprised if those behind this already knew of the sudden cancellation of this 'game'.

“Same way that pretty much absolutely everyone gets involved with this,” he said with an exasperated sigh because now really didn’t seem like a good time to discuss how Noah got involved with all this. He wasn’t going to insult Nao’s intelligence by saying that he just stumbled across him. Because this was not an easy place to find if you didn’t know what you were looking for. An abandoned building surrounded by abandoned buildings. Not the kind of place that a ton of people would willingly wander through with the knowledge of happy little serial killers running around with metal traps. “I agreed to help out with the Jigsaw games about ten minutes after being told that I had survived the game and had the will to survive. You know, major blood loss and absolute panic with a cop standing over me. There’s not much you wouldn’t agree to at that point,” he said, finishing removing the straps from Nao.
