Favorite Albums 2024 Part II: National
I'm in the US, so yeah.

Big Ass Truck - Big Ass Demo
Yes, this is kind of a meme band. From California, this beatdown hardcore band has two releases from this year, but their demo has some catchy, stank-face inducing riffs. You should at least listen to the first song, it'll put a smile on your face.

Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere
So many people have sung this album's praises, it's almost annoying. However, it's such a good album, with such interesting genre mixing. This Colorado band's mix of death metal and 70's prog rock is fascinating. You do have to be there for the non-metal parts, but if you are, it's such a psychedelic trip. This is technically 2 songs, but each song is divided into 3 parts in the release, making it even proggier.

Chat Pile - Cool World
When I discovered Chat Pile in 2022, I thought they were super cool and loved God's Country. I was hesitant about this album for a bit. I thought it would be a more transitional album, especially with the shoegaze elements. Having heard the full thing though, I think the shoegaze elements work, and it's less of a transitional album than I thought. This is a great album, but it's not at the levels of God's Country.

Coniferous Myst - Lost Forests of Evermore
This Old School Dungeon Synth album has such a great atmosphere, with a bleak, cold atmosphere. I love using this for D&D campaigns. I don't have much to say, but this mini-album  really captures the OSDS feel and sound.

DJ October 32nd - 11 OUT OF 12 MONTHS AREN'T REAL
Grime Stone Records has been on my radar with their quirky black metal and dungeon synth, but I've been especially fond of their electronic music such as DJ Count Olkoth. DJ October 32nd is hardcore dance music, with a quirky sound that doesn't take itself seriously. It's silly, but I would dance to this around Halloween if it came on.

Infinite Ammo - 2024 Demo
Infinite Ammo is a Montana based hardcore punk band. This is their first release. It's really solid demo that I enjoy quite a bit, and I also have a project of their bassist's later in this list.

Favorite Track: Speed Guy

Ithilra - Covenant of the Blackened Woodlands This raw atmospheric black metal from Illinois has a really gnarly tone. I like it. There's another release from this project that came out in 2024 as well, but this is my favorite of them. The cover is great, and I like how the album progresses.

Miriam Hacksaw and Rye - Demo
I discovered Miriam Hacksaw through her Instagram. She also had two releases this year, the other one being December 2024's The Lupine, however this one I have listened to more, so I'm maintaining its place on this list. Really good bluegrass from people underrepresented in the bluegrass scene.

Favorite Track: Come on in my Kitchen/Blackjack Grove

Olde Bard - Jewels of the Spidercrown
Also from Grime Stone Records, and definitely encapsulating the kind of quirky, heavy metal infused black metal that GSR puts out, is Olde Bard. This is their second EP, and it improves on the first one in all forms. The production is better, the songs tighter, and the vocals are harsher in a way I like. Check this out.

Favorite Track: Deep Red Death

Termagant - Demo 2024
From Eleanor Harper, the bassist of Infinite Ammo and the person behind other projects such as Lust Hag and Gun Girl. This is some high quality brutal death metal. It's only 3 songs, but they're all super gross (in a good way). There was also a split with Blütwürm that came out this year.
3 tracks, 11 minutes
Favorite Track: Chainsawed in Half

Thou - Umbilical
Their first studio full length since 2018, and Thou sounds angrier than ever. Their Louisiana style of sludge metal, full of nihilism and misanthropy, intensely harsh vocals, and super down-tuned guitars, makes this album punishing.
