it's a late friday night when you finally come home from a long shift from your part-time job. the door closes behind you with a quiet click, and you find yourself sliding down against it, your back pressed against the cold wood. your legs are outstretched in front of you, head bowed low, and your arms lie limp at your sides.

god, you're so tired.

"hey," a familiar voice speaks up and pulls you out of your thoughts. "welcome home."

you slightly lift your head and see that he's crouched down beside you, honey-colored eyes looking at you with concern.

you blink in surprise. "tetsu? what are you-"

"your roommate let me in," he cuts you off, as if he anticipated your question. "don't worry, they're not here, they're out for the night."

"oh."

kuroo studies your features with his gaze lingering on the exhaustion etched into your features. you look so worn out and drained.

he can’t help but feel a pang of worry run through his body.

with no hesitation, he scoops you up in his arms which is answered with a surprised yelp from you. "alright you big baby, let's go take a nice bath, yeah?"

you find yourself sitting in front of him with your chest against his back in the bathtub. the scent of the vanilla bath soap fills the air, and the soft glow of candlelight creates a serene ambiance. kuroo’s chest radiates his warmth as he runs reassuring circles on your shoulders.

"you've been so busy lately, hm?" kuroo starts.

you hum in agreement. "yeah, i guess."

he can feel the tension in your body, the weight of you carrying everything. his fingers trace your body: from your delicate shoulders down to your arms, in hopes of easing the heavy weights on your back.

"have you been picking extra shifts at your job?" he asks, face nuzzling into the crook of your neck.

"yeah," you reply, defeated. "my rent isn't gonna pay itself, y'know."

"i know, baby, i know." he gives a tender kiss on your shoulder blade. "i'm glad we could spend some time together today though. you really need a break."

"i'm okay," you say out loud.

without thinking, your hand reaches out to his face, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. he smiles into the kiss, holding you close, refusing to let you go just yet. he lets you cling to him for the rest of the time in the tub as he washes the dirt and tension off your back.

later, as the both of you dry up, kuroo can't help but keep sneaking glances at you.

he knows you’re tired.

he could tell from the moment you were slumped against the front door. he sees it in the distant look in your eyes, the way your mind always seems to be elsewhere, even when you’re together

he knew that you were overworking yourself, pushing yourself beyond your limits, and he felt helpless watching it all unfold in front of him.

and to top it off, you’d been avoiding him, making excuses.

after changing into one of your (his) oversized t-shirts and a pair of shorts, you crawl into bed, patting the space next to you. kuroo takes that as his cue and hops in, beginning to envelop you in his embrace.

your face is in his chest as he's wrapped his big arms around you. you mumble some incoherent words which has him releasing his grip on you.

"what'd you say?" he cocks an eyebrow.

you hesitate, feeling a bit embarrassed to repeat what you said only a few moments prior.

"do you even love me anymore?" you mumble, eyes looking away from him.

he sits up straight now, hands on your cheeks, forcing you to look him in the eye. "what are you even talking about dumbass?"

"i know i haven’t been spending enough time with you and i get if you’re feeling frustrated and annoyed with me…"

he looks at you with a straight face, making him difficult to read.

nonetheless, you continue to pour out your feelings.

"i know i'm a handful and i don't want you to be here because you feel obligated to. i'm sure there are other things that you'd rather be doing right now and i feel bad that you're here when you could be out with your friends doing fun stuff."

your words hang heavy in the air now.

the burden of the past weeks plus the internal guilt you’ve been feeling was finally spoken out into the universe.

it's dead silent and the guilt is suffocating you. you refuse to look up from your lap until he utters out, "so that's what this is about?"

your eyes lift from your fidgeting fingers, widening as you're met with kuroo's piercing, calculating gaze, accompanied by a smirk and a quick flick to your forehead

"ow!" you start rubbing the throbbing part of your head. "what the hell was that for?"

"that was for being a fucking dumbass."

"but i didn't even do anything!"

"you did when you started doubting yourself and letting your insecurities get to you," he says firmly, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"i know you’ve been busy and preoccupied lately and that’s okay, yeah? don’t feel bad about being busy, yeah? that should be the least of your worries. i’m here to pick our relationship up when it gets too heavy for you."

guilt washes over you, mingling with the love you feel for him.

he’s so understanding, so patient... you don’t feel worthy of him.

and almost as if he could read your mind, he keeps going.

"i’ll say this as many times as you need me to: i’ve never felt 'obligated' to be with you or whatever that bullshit means. i’m here because i want to be, not because i have to. i love you, and i want to be here for you."

he looks down at you with your eyes looking up at him. his heart skips a beat at the sight. you look so adorable right now with your a slight pout enveloping your features. he can't help but let a smile escape his lips.

"i’m here because i love you,” he repeats, his voice steady and sincere. “have i not told you how much you mean to me enough?"

you shake your head, immediately. "n-no! you always tell me!"

"i just have been really been in my feelings lately and i've been just trying to keep myself occupied so i don't start spiraling," you look away from kuroo.

"and that's okay, yeah?" he strokes your hair. "no matter what, i promise i’ll try my best to be there for you. i want to be here for you."

he kisses the top of your head. "i love you, my pretty. don't you ever forget that."

you wrap your arms around his neck and start peppering his face with small kisses. before you know it, you're lying on top of him now and your faces are only mere centimeters apart from one another. you can feel his breath on your chin and the lingering scent of his cologne infiltrate your nostrils.

"i’m sorry i haven’t been around you more," you whisper, guilt still gnawing at you.

"it's okay, my love. i promise," he reassures you once more. "i'm glad i could be here."

"i love you, stupid," you tell him, placing a quick kiss on your lips.

"i know," he laughs, pulling you back to his lips and letting you go for a quick second. "i love you too." and he continues to kiss you and hold you for the rest of the night until the sun rises.

it happens suddenly.

what begins as a normal toman meeting, ends up becoming one of the scariest nights for you. mikey usually kept you away from all and any gang fights, and besides being friends with a lot of the members, the only interaction you had with toman as a gang was when you ocassionally came to meetings.

the only reason why you'd been there that night was because you and mikey had a date planned afterwards, so you told him you didn't mind waiting around while he did toman business.

(it was that and because you always secretly enjoyed watching mikey look all intimidating and hot when he led meetings).

you're at the front, slightly off to the left when it happens. a sudden bang echoes that has everyone jumping and yelp to leave your lips as your eyes instantly turn to see where the noise had come from. you can't see it, not clearly over the multitude of toman members, but a rivaling gang that toman has been dealing with for a few weeks launched a surprise attack.

it was chaos instantly.

in the midst of everything, you'd gotten shoved back; you'd been trying to make your way to mikey, heart racing and body tense with fear, but a lower member of toman had tried to get you out of the way of danger.

initially, you'd been happy with that. you were further away from the fight, left somewhat isolated as you anxiously tried to catch any sight of mikey that you could.

then, one of the guys from the rivaling gang found you.

he grins, wide and scary, and instantly you learn what that loud bang from before had been when the guy pulls out a gun.

"what're you doing out here all alone, sweetheart?"

you're paralyzed with fear. panic strikes you that you can't find the words to speak, at least, nothing coherent - you end up mumbling pleas as he steps towards you, the gun still point threateningly at you.

"please-!"

you think you're going to die. maybe worse. you're not sure. but then, suddenly, there's a shadow falling in front of you and your eyes widen at the sight of a familiar head of long blond hair.

"mikey!"

he doesn't turn to face you, keeping his narrowed and dark gaze on the boy in front of you, but his hand does reach back to grab you, squeezing reassuringly.

"hah!" the boy laughs, a wild glee racing in his eyes. "who would've thought i'd be the one to finish the leader of toman!"

your heart plummets, eyes focused on the way the boys finger moves to press on the trigger, mikey's name leaving your lips in a shrilled cry.

only, the shot never rings out.

draken appears from seemingly nowhere, slamming his elbow into the guys head and knocking him to the ground. with practiced ease, draken rips the gun from the boys hand and keeps him pinned to the ground, turning to his best friend and leader.

"leave him for me," mikey calls, the first time you've heard him speak since the meeting got interrupted. he sounds angry. "i'll deal with him in a minute."

draken nods and then mikey turns to you.

his hands cup your cheeks, brushing hair from your face and gaze softening as he stares down at you in worry. "are you hurt?" his voice comes out in a soft whisper, laced with concern and barely shield panic as he lets his facade as the leader of toman fade away in the presence of you.

you nod, numb; reaching for his hands, you squeeze his wrist. "m-mikey, you could've gotten hurt-"

mikey just shushes you gently, shaking his head. "doesn't matter," he soothes, “for you, i would do anything."

and you want to argue, because your heart is still racing at the fear of the gun and the thought of losing mikey. but you know there's no arguing. so you simply nod, leaning into his touch and seeking and relishing in his comfort.

Summary: Spending your week off in a cramped train cabin with Chris was not at the top of your to-do list...

A/N: Thank you @babblydrabbly for the prompt!💕 This is my first time writing for Chris, so a big thank you also to @lorecraft for beta-reading and reassuring me that he sounded ok! You guys are the best!

Staring out of the small rectangular window as a blur of rich green forest streaks by, you let out a quiet, dejected sigh. This is most decidedly not how you had envisioned spending your week off. Instead of relaxing at the beach and being served unlimited margaritas by jaw-droppingly handsome waiters, you find yourself squeezed into an impossibly small sleeper cabin onboard the overnight train from Austria to Germany. The scenery itself might be spectacular, but the less said about the company, the better.

“You wanna get changed first, or should I?”

The sound of your companion’s deep voice drags your attention away from the window and when you turn around you find yourself a matter of inches away from Chris’s broad chest. Waller’s briefing had instructed the pair of you to dress incognito, but while Peacemaker had ditched his red and cream uniform, the form-fitting black t-shirt he had opted for instead did little to hide the mountain of the man beneath.

Grumbling under your breath, you turn back around without answering his question and continue to stare out of the window. “Economos could have tried a little harder to get us a bigger cabin, don’t you think?”

“Actually, sleeper cabins are the most comfortable and spacious option when it comes to the night train. It’s basically like staying in a moving hotel.” 

Forgetting that Chris can’t see your expression, you pull a face at the glass; the man seems to have an answer for everything, but on the matter of space, you would be inclined to disagree. Even disregarding his impressive stature, there is barely enough room to swing a cat in the cramped compartment. Like it or not, you’re in for a cosy night.

“So, are you getting naked first or am I?” Chris continues. 

The comment causes a rush of heat to flood your body. You’re glad he can’t see your face; the last thing you want is for him to get a glimpse of your flustered expression. You’ve fought hard to ensure he remains oblivious to the shift in your feelings towards him over the last few months and you’ll be damned if Waller’s last minute machinations are going to change that.

“How about no one gets naked,” you suggest tightly, eventually turning away from the window. “Anyway, one of us should keep watch.”

“Keep watch for what exactly?” Chris frowns, taking a step closer to you. “The mark is in Frankfurt. No one knows we’re here. Relax.”

You open your mouth to argue, but he stops you by pressing a long, thick finger against your parted lips. “This was supposed to be your week off, right?” He ignores your startled expression and continues, his finger still resting gently against your mouth. “So how about you enjoy the trip? Let your hair down. Have some fun.”

In a gesture so slight, so subtle, that you almost wonder if you imagined it, he brushes his finger across the swell of your bottom lip, letting it linger for just a moment too long, before withdrawing his hand altogether. 

Dangerously close to your jaw hitting the floor, you snap your mouth shut and stare at Chris incredulously. He’s been flirting with you for months – half-hearted attempts to get into your pants – but this is different. It’s the first time the two of you have truly been alone together, and it’s almost as if he knows your feelings towards him have been rapidly thawing. 

The air seems to crackle with electricity as he proceeds to squeeze past you, his arm purposely brushing against your side. As if you’re no longer fully in control of your own movements, you turn your head and watch, heart racing, as he begins to strip out of the tight black t-shirt.

One way or another, you can’t help but suspect that this is going to be a long night.

he presses his lips against yours and the heat of it melts the cold away. you couldn’t help but notice a touch of yearning to him this time and find yourself smiling into the kiss, a sort of haze clouding your sense of mind.

the cavern is eerily quiet, echoing only the quietest of sounds as chemicals of sorts seethes, the wind itself, shallow huffs for breath of air. it’s when he sees you trembling a bit does he let go.

he feels, sees, the puff of your breath waft across his lips, an inch from yours. you don’t know why, or where it came from, but a surge of joy courses in your veins as you let out all the energy to the air and him (and he finds himself entranced as he is all those other times.) as the snowflakes around the two of you falls onto your skin, melting, he then thinks that he, too, wants to feel your touch, your warmth yet again. his hand cups your cheek, and its heat flows into the palm of his hand, to travel to the nape of your neck, and when you feel his fingers rake your hair, the space the two of you share diminishes.

“let’s try this again, shall we?”

you taste cherries.

you swallow his sound of faint surprise, feeling the softness of his lips against yours and it’s all it took for the two of you to lose another in each other. the sea and its waves seems to fade into the backdrop. he softens underneath your kiss, tilting your head a bit so he could go farther - the lack of air could only do so much.

airy, a bit light-headed, but all is right in the world as you part from him, only to let out a huff when he leans in, following after you. in a haze, his eyes slightly hooded, he stares at the luster of your lips. a soft red stroking his cheeks, as he tries to compose himself. it’s tempting, intoxicating (and cute.) at that last thought, you rest your forehead against his and stay there for a bit, even with the quiet surprise all over his face with the sudden contact.

at his reaction, you chuckle, dripping with adoration and he can tell, if the way his skin reddens all over again. whether you expected it or not, he places a small kiss on your lips - chaste, gentle.

“only you can stir my heart as you do.”

whispers of the wind stray through the leaves, shivering, as the wildlife all but surrounds you. all of his senses are heightened with every single shift of movement from you, tilt of your head or his, and he finds himself parting a bit before losing himself too deep.

his arms around your waist, he situates himself in your hold. he nestles himself in the nook of your neck, taking in your scent as he breathes in and out, slowly, softly. yet, it further proves to be fruitless as you let out a laugh - his hair is brushing the side of your neck, tickling you, and it takes all you have to at least bite back the feeling bubbling in your chest, breathless, yet in bliss (his ears flutter - he’s still too into the sound of you.)

he closes his eyes and lets the next few minutes go by in silence; so do you, that smile of yours still intact, and he can feel so a mile away.

it’s when he leans back a bit, enough to see you does he press a peck to the corner of your lips. there’s a second of stillness he takes notice of as he feels you warm up, you floundering for your words - all that left you was a soft sound that kept his eyes on you. this time, he huffs, the sound amused, as he closes the distance yet again.

“just one more, alright?”

SEPTEMBER 4th 2020

Airielle Jones smiled to herself as she looked around the backstage area. After working her ass off for two years down at NXT she was finally getting an opportunity to showcase her talents on the main roster. 

“Airielle?” She looked over when she heard her name being called. “I’m Kayla. Nice to meet you.” Kayla said, shaking Airielle’s hand. 

“Nice to meet you too.” 

“So Paul said you can shadow me for the day and tomorrow you’ll do Talking Smack with me.” Airielle didn’t think it was possible for her smile to get any bigger. 

“Oh wow. Hopefully I won’t be in your way.” She said and Kayla waved her off. 

“Don’t worry about it. Come on, follow me.” Kayla had Airielle follow her around backstage, introducing her to passing superstars and upper management that Airielle had yet to meet. 

“So I have a segment to film with Sheamus and then one with Jey Uso at the end of the night. Have you met either of them yet?”Kayla said as A.J Styles just walked away from them and  Airelle shook her head. 

“No, I've met his twin though. I’m good friends with his wife.” 

“Oh. You know Trin?” Airielle nodded. “How?” 

“We go to the same hair salon in Pensacola.” 

“Oh wow, Small world.” Kayla said and beckoned Airielle to follow her. 

Airielle watched in awe as Kayla recorded her segment with Sheamus. She couldn’t wait until she was able to do what she loved. 

“Hey kid.” She smiled at Hunter when he walked over to her. 

“Hi. Mr Levesque.” She said, shaking his hand in greeting. 

“Please call me Paul. How you like the main roster?” He gestured around and Airielle nodded with a nervous chuckle. 

“It’s awesome. Gonna take some getting used to thought.” She said and he laughed, giving her a pat on the back. 

“You’re gonna do great, kid.” He said giving her one last smile before walking away. 

Kayla led Airielle around backstage showing her around the Amway Center when they bumped into Jey Uso. 

“Oh, hey Jey,. This is Airielle, Airielle this is Jey.” Kayla said and Airielle held her hand out. 

“Nice to meet you Jey.” She said, smiling at him. Josh was hooked, instantly. The second she smiled at him he was a goner. He realized he must’ve been staring at her because she slowly put her hand down, arched an eyebrow at him and turned her head to look at Kayla. 

“Shit, I zoned out. My bad.” He said, clearing his throat and giving them an awkward laugh “I’m Josh.” He said and she laughed. 

“Nice to meet you.” She said again waving bye and she and Kayla started to walk away from him. Josh groaned to himself as he watched her walk away. She was definitely gonna be trouble. 

Airielle and Kayla were sitting in The Gorilla position, watching the main event of the show when Paul walked over to them. 

“Hey kid, you got the post match.” He said to Airielle and her eyes widened. Paul laughed at the look on her face. “You don’t mind right?” He asked Kayla and she shook her head no. 

“Absolutely not. I’ll help her get ready.” She said and Paul nodded. 

“Good Luck,” he said giving her a thumbs up  before walking off. 

It was almost time for Airielle to go out and do the post match interview. There weren’t any fans but she was still nervous. 

Kayla sensed her nervousness and grabbed her hand giving it a squeeze. “Girl, you got this, don't worry.” Airielle nodded and followed a stage hand to the side entrance of the ramp. Airielle watched as Jey- Josh hit the uso splash and pinned Matt Riddle for the 3-count.  She and Josh made eye contact as she made her way into the ring. 

“Congratulations Jey.” She said smiling. “You have earned your opportunity for the universal championship against your cousin Roman Reigns, at Clash of Champions. How important was this victory for you?” She held the microphone close to him so he could answer. 

Josh looked at her and his mind went blank. He blinked trying to refocus himself. He said the only thing that came to mind.  “Yes, sir!” He yelled out twice. “Hey big dog! I made the family proud, too. But guess what, Roman Reigns its locked down! Welcome…. You know the rest.” He said winking at her as his theme music played. 

“You did good.” Kayla said, hugging her. “Sorry I'm a hugger.” Kayla said as she pulled away from Airielle. 

“It’s okay and thank you. I don’t know why I was so nervous.” 

“Girl, you were a natural out there. So um, we film "Talking Smack" tomorrow morning nine am sharp. Meet me in the underground parking lot at eight.” Airielle nodded and gave Kayla one last hug before walking out of the arena and towards her rental. 

SEPTEMBER 5th 2020

Airielle rushed towards Kayla. “I’m sorry I’m late.” It was 8:30 am. “I’m still getting used to being up this early.” 

“It’s only thirty minutes. You’re good.” Kayla said and motioned for Airielle to follow her into the arena. “Woods is joining us today. Have you met him?” Airielle nodded. “Cool, we have Shinsuke, Cesaro, Alexa and Jey as guests today.” Airielle nodded again and continued to listen to Kayla as she went over how the show was going to happen. 

“Oh hey, Airielle’s here.” Xavier Woods said, causing Josh to look up from his phone and towards Airielle and Kayla. “Have you met her yet?” Josh groaned and nodded. 

“Yeah, made a complete ass outta myself.” He said, sucking his teeth when Woods started laughing at him. “It ain't funny Uce. I felt like an idiot just standing staring at her.” He rolled his eyes and pushed Woods away from him when he continued to laugh. “I’ll see you later.” Josh said, flipping Woods off as he walked away.

Airielle felt at home as she talked with Kayla, Woods, and Alexa during the Talking Smack taping. She felt like she actually belonged. Alexa had just left the panel and it was time to bring Josh in. 

“Well we have one more guest to join us right now.” She said looking between Kayla and Woods. 

“Right and I’ve used the word easy, but you know what’s not easy.” Kayla chimed in. “When you have to go head-on with family and that's what this guy will be doing come-” She was cut off as Josh came into the shot spraying the three of them with silly string. 

Airielle laughed as Woods started yelling about the string getting stuck in his hair. She started to pull the string out of her hair as Kayla started to talk about what happened the night before on Smackdown. She noticed that Josh was trying his hardest to not look in her direction and frowned before she remembered that she was on camera and plastered a smile on her face. She zoned back into the conversation when it was her turn to talk. 

“So let's say you go on the clash of champions and you become our new universal champion.” Airielle started and Josh felt his heart start to beat faster at the sound of her voice. “What’s your plan?” Their eyes met for the first time that day  and once again Josh was stuck. All thoughts flew out of his head. He snapped back once Woods kicked his leg under the table. He ignored the weird looks Kayla and Woods were giving him and answered Airielle’s question. 

“Real talk I can’t even rap that around my head. I aint never looked at me as no, real talk I ain't never thought about the big title. Never thought about a IC title, US title. It was always tryna chase yall.” He said pointing towards Woods. “It was always about beating y’alls record. I love the New Day. It was always eyes on the tag team titles. But now it’s like oh.” He stopped and smiled. “I can do it, you know.” 

She watched as he talked about how much winning the title would mean to him and she couldn’t help but smile, he was so passionate about wrestling, it was adorable to see. 

“That was so much fun.” Airielle said to Kayla once filming was done. Wood and Josh said goodbye before leaving Airielle and Kayla still sitting at the table. 

“Yeah, it was.” Kayla said with a frown on her face. 

“Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?” Kayla looked over at Airielle and placed her hands overtop of hers. 

“No, you were fantastic. It’s just..” She paused and looked around before sliding her chair closer to Airielle. “Can you keep a secret?” Airielle leaned closer to Kayla and nodded. 

“Did Josh seem off to you? I mean I know you just met him, but..” Kayla sighed. Airielle shrugged, 

“I mean, maybe he was nervous about something. Is.. is he your boyfriend?” 

“No, I mean we.. you know, and went on some dates but we haven’t made anything official. We’re keeping it on the low.” Airielle nodded but she didn’t know what to say. She was slightly disappointed because she found Josh to be extremely attractive but it didn’t matter because she had promised herself  that she would not jeopardize her job for a quick fuck with one of these superstars.

Airielle had been on the main roster for about 4 weeks now and she honestly couldn’t have been any happier. Sure she missed some of her friends from NXT but being on Smackdown had opened up way more opportunities for her than being on NXT. 

She was walking towards catering when she heard someone call out her name. She smiled when she saw that it was Kayla who called her name. She walked over and was immediately pulled into a hug. 

“First PLE. Are you excited?” Kayla asked and Airielle nodded with a nervous chuckle. She was about to respond when someone else called her name. 

“Airielle?! I missed you” Airielle smiled brightly at Trinity and rushed over to give her a hug. “Damn, look at you. I gotta come raid ya closet girl. “ 

Josh was walking around the arena with Jon looking for Trinity. 

“What the point of having a damn phone if she ain’t gon’ answer it.” Jon grumbled as he pressed Trinity’s name on his phone again, cursing her when her voicemail picked up again. “Why you so quiet Josh? You nervous?” 

“Hell yeah I'm nervous. I aint never have a opportunity like this before Uce. What if I screw it up.” 

“Man shut up.” He said, laughing when Josh stopped walking and glared at him. 

“What-” 

“Shut up. You and big uce gon go out there and kill it. Stop worrying.”  Josh nodded and took a deep breath. “You got this Uce.”  Jon said as he pulled his brother into a hug.  “Now help me find my wife.” 

They started walking again towards catering. That was the only place left to check. Jon cursed as he bumped into his brother almost knocking himself over. “Damn, what the f-” 

“I found her.” Josh said lowly nodding his head over to where Trinity was standing, talking to Airielle and Kayla. Jon started to limp his way over but stopped when he noticed his brother wasn't following him. 

“You coming?”  Josh shook his head, 

“Nah, imma stay right here.” He said ignoring the look his twin was giving him. “I just don’t want to go over there.” He said avoiding his brother's eyes. 

“Josh, stop playing and come on.” Jon rolled his eyes when Josh didn’t move. He hobbled over to his wife. “TRIN!” He yelled. She jumped, turning to face him. “Why you not answering ya phone man.” He said, rolling his eyes at her. “Sup Kayla.” He said fist bumping her and turned his attention to Airielle. “Oh shit. I know you.” He said, causing her to laugh. 

“Hi, Jon. Nice to see you again.” She said, smiling at him. 

“I thought you were with Josh?” Trin asked and Jon nodded and pointed behind him where Josh was waiting down the hall. 

“I was, he acting weird.” All the girls looked down the hall towards Josh whose eyes widened when he saw them looking at him. Airielle looked at Kayla out of the corner of her eye and saw that she was now looking down at her heels with a sad look on her face. 

I’ll see y’all later. Don’t forget to text me when you get back to Pensacola.” Trinity told Airielle. 

“Hey you okay?” Airielle asked once Trin and Jon walked away from them. Kayla shrugged. 

“I mean.” She sighed. “He’s been ignoring me. He won’t tell me what’s going on.” 

“Well honestly fuck him. If he’s ghosting you it’s his loss.” She said, pulling Kayla into a hug. 

Josh, Jon and Trinity were now in Joe’s locker room, as Josh and Joe got ready for the show. 

“Is everything okay with you and Kayla?” Trin asked once Josh sat down on the couch next to her. Josh arched his eyebrow and shrugged. 

“Yeah why?”  

“She was the reason why you didn’t come over earlier with Jon right?” She narrowed her eyes at him when he avoided her eyes and bit the inside of his cheek. 

“Josh..” 

Josh cleared his throat and shrugged. “Yeah, me and Kay cool. I mean we not together though but..” He shrugged again, trailing off. Trinity studied him then let out a gasp. 

“What about Airielle?” She asked and he choked on the water he was sipping. 

“What happened?” Josh rolled his eyes and sunk lower into the couch. 

“Nothing happened, he just made an ass outta himself.” Joe said, overhearing their conversation. Josh sucked his teeth and glared over at his older cousin. “You ain’t see talking smack from a couple weeks ago? Man was stuck the second she started talking to him.”

“Josh got a crush.”

“I’m a grown ass man, I ain’t got no damn crush.” He said, rolling his eyes when they all laughed at him.

You’re never going to forgive Jeonghan for this.

It was supposed to be a group thing. When the plans were made a few days ago, there were six of you all in talks to go to the movies together, and as far as you were concerned, Jeonghan had booked the seats all at once so you would all be next to one another. He'd given you the time, told you where he’d wait for you inside the theater lobby, refused to accept reimbursement for the ticket (he quite often told you just to cover his snacks, instead), and you didn't think anything more of it. Even last night when you’d messaged Jihoon to ask if he needed a ride, he’d told you that he was going to hop in with Soonyoung so you didn't need to worry.

Which means that obviously, he's in on this too. He's on thin ice, as well.

Because when you walk through the doors at 7:15 on Friday night and turn to the left to meet your friends by the GODZILLA standee, there's only one person waiting for you. Leaning against the wall, eyes glued to his phone, shifting his weight impatiently from one side to the other. Soonyoung. He looks stressed, biting on his bottom lip, seemingly typing out quite an aggressive series of messages: if the increasingly creased space between his eyebrows is anything to go by, all of them are going unanswered.

He doesn't look up until you're standing right in front of him, wrestling your own phone free from the pocket of your jeans. When he does, and he realises that it's you, he lets out a quiet sigh of relief.

"Thank God you're here," he says, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was starting to think this was some kind of a set-up."

You laugh quietly, tapping your screen and opening your text thread with Jeonghan, scrolling back to find the messages concerning tonight's plans.

"The others aren't here yet?" you ask distractedly.

Soonyoung shakes his head. "I thought maybe everyone was stuck in traffic, or something," he says. "Wait – are you on your own?"

It's your turn to frown, now.

"Yeah?" you say, glancing back down at your screen. You definitely have the right date and time. "Where's Jihoon?"

It falls silent for a moment as you stare each other down, matching confused looks plastered on both of your faces.

"I thought... he was coming with you?" you say in unison.

The ball drops for Soonyoung first. He slumps back against the wall as he connects the dots in his brain and he brings both his hands up to his face, rubbing the tips of his fingers into his eye sockets. You watch him, concerned: he looks genuinely distressed, and when he re-emerges from behind his palms, his cheeks are brightly flushed, face scrunched up in a way that you're not sure you've ever seen before.

"I'm so sorry," he says wearily, tipping his head back against the wall.

You don't get a chance to challenge him on the apology. At the same time as he says it, your phone pings with a notification; you bring it within range to find a new message from Jeonghan. A picture message. A screenshot, of a movie reservation, except there aren't six seat numbers listed. There are two. And it's not in his name, it's in yours. Underneath, another message pops up, just as wordless as the first. It contains one single wink emoji and a thumbs up.

You get there too eventually, and under your breath, you mutter, "that scheming little shit."

What's more annoying is that Jeonghan joked about doing exactly this a few months ago when you asked, in what you thought was a very nonchalant manner, whether Soonyoung was seeing anyone, what his 'situation' was. After some questioning, he excitedly offered to set the two of you up on a date, if you were interested. When you pleaded for him not to, he teased that he'd find a way, and that he'd catch you out when you least expected it: you never thought he'd follow through though, especially not after this long. You were sure he'd forgotten, just as you had..

You can't believe him. You really can't.

"I guess... it's just you and me," you swallow, acknowledging that this really isn't the fault of the man standing across from you and that it isn't fair to be grouchy with him when he hasn't done anything wrong. Besides, he looks mortified: hands balled up down by his thighs, cheeks still stained pink, a few beads of sweat starting to glisten at his hairline.

"I–... yeah," he grimaces.

"I'm really sorry," you sigh, tapping your pointer finger against the back of your phone. "I didn't– I really didn't have a clue he was doing all this. If I'd known..."

"Hey, no, don't be," Soonyoung insists, shaking off his discomfort and stepping away from the wall, taking a step closer to you. "Why would you-...?"

He trails off and in the seconds that follow, something... happens. Multiple expressions appear on- and vanish from- his face, replaced just as quickly as they come and immediately replaced by another that you don't have quite enough time to read. You're sure the same thing happens to you, too. There's a conversation shared that doesn't result in any words being said aloud, but even so, things are acknowledged. Things are understood. Soonyoung stands up straighter when the threads knit together in his brain and he slides his phone into the front of his hoodie, kicking at the ground with the rubber toe of his shoe as he pulls out his wallet instead.

He starts to take a few slow steps towards the concession stand, keeping his eyes on you to make sure you follow. Your tickets get printed, you head into the screen and settle into the seats Jeonghan booked for you, and while you wait for the movie to start, you make a little small talk. It's nothing groundbreaking. You catch up on the things you've missed in the few months since you last saw him, crack a few jokes, share a few shy smiles, grin as you sip at the drink he insisted on paying for. You bump hands as you simultaneously reach for the popcorn bucket. It takes him a whole ten seconds to get over it.

(He doesn't need to know that it takes you even longer.)

Soonyoung's fingers bounce idly on the arm of the chair the whole time, like he's twitching to do something with them, fighting against a strong, overwhelming impulse. And as the lights grow dimmer and the people around you start falling quiet, you lean over to him, close enough that you can whisper something straight into his ear.

"You can hold my hand, if you want."

So... he does.

He doesn't let go, either: not until the movie ends and you leave together and he walks you all the way back to your car. Not until he asks if you'd be interested in going out on another date: one that he gets to plan. And there are a million reasons you say yes to him, of course, but when he looks so pretty blushing under the lights of the parking lot... how on Earth could you ever say no?

(He squeezes your fingers and gently tugs you closer until you're falling into him: then, he catches you with an arm around your waist and his lips on yours. The salty aftertaste of the popcorn on his mouth lingers long after he says goodnight, and you consider, on the drive home, that maybe you can forgive Jeonghan this one time.)

(Just... not before you make him squirm a little bit, first.)

You've never been one to party hard and get so drunk you can't see clearly in front of yourself. But when you finally pass some of the toughest exams you've ever had to give, you knew you wanted to party till you can't breathe.

And that's what you did. The biggest frat party happening in a rich kid's home from your university has adrenaline coursing through your veins as you don't think twice before taking a shot.

In fact, you got carried away so much, that your best friend Tessa who is literally known to be the biggest party animal in your whole university, is concerned for you.

"Give me that," she grunts, taking the millionth cup you were about to down. You pout, trying to get it back, but the alcohol has made your mind all fuzzy and you aren't very sure what exactly you're trying to do.

"Who knew you had this hidden side?" Tessa says, shaking her head as she takes your hand and leads you out to the garden of the big house. You try your best to stop her from dragging you, but your drunken power is no match for her quite sober one.

"Tess come on! I'm not done yet," you huff, your arms crossed across your chest as you see Tessa is basically blocking the door.

"Nuh uh, not today," she says, pulling out her phone. "You need to get home, like right now,"

You groan out loud, and you attempt to simply walk on the lush grass you're both standing at, but you greatly miscalculate your steps and fall on the grass, head first.

Tessa rushes up to you, asking you over and over if you're okay. You just look up at her and start giggling constantly.

"I'm okay," you say in between your giggles, your own mistake having you amused. Tessa sighs at you and quickly finds the contact in her phone she was trying to find, before you decided to take a fall.

She impatiently taps her foot, waiting for the person who's supposedly on the end of the phone to pick up.

"Hello?"

Finally.

"Zach hi!"

"Tessa, you okay?"

"Yeah, I just need you to come and get your... thing," she says, looking at you lying on the ground and looking up the stars as you hum to a melody.

Zach laughs on the other end. "What happened?"

"Too drunk, can't even see straight," Tessa groans. "You need to come over right now."

"I'm on my way."

Tessa lets out a sigh of relief on hearing those words. She turns towards you, and lets her hand out for you to grab onto.

"Come on, Zach is coming to pick you up," she says, helping you stand up, in a not so graceful fashion.

Hearing the word 'Zach' lightens a light bulb in your head. "Zach? Where's Zach? I need my Zach," you slur, trying to run around the garden, as if he's standing right there and you just can't see him. Tessa has a hard time but she finally catches up to you, firmly grips your hand to make sure you don't run off and do something stupid again.

"He's coming, okay?" She huffs out, holding onto you tightly. She's expecting you to throw some sorts of tantrum, to complain how your boyfriend actually is here and she's just hiding him on purpose, but instead, you only nod obediently.

Tessa hears footsteps approaching you both, and just as she turns around, she swears she could've have cried out of happiness.

Zach is standing there, looking at the two of them with a smile on his face.

"Zach!" You yell excitedly, as you run (or, try to run) to him. He wraps his arms around you and pulls you in a hug, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"Hey baby," he mumbles, leaning in to kiss you on your lips. You sigh at the feeling of his soft lips on yours, your eyes fluttered close and a million butterflies prancing around in your stomach.

"Thank you Tessa, we'll be going home now," Zach acknowledges the girl standing at the back, letting you both enjoy your moment. She nods with a smile on her face and goes back inside to the rest of the party, and Zach leads you back out to his car.

He definitely has a struggle settling you in the car seat and buckling your seat belt, as you've never been this drunk before and it's also his first time taking care of super-drunk you.

But, he doesn't hate it or finds it to be a difficult task. You're sitting in the seat next to him, saying little cute things that have his heart racing.

"You're so cute Zach, you always take such good care of me," you pout, poking his bicep. He laughs at you, and you continue to praise him.

"You're just," you sigh, "perfect. I couldn't have someone as perfect as you."

You definitely weren't aware of what you were saying, but Zach knows you being drunk isn't the only time you'll say these words to him. You love to constantly drop little phrases to let him know you do appreciate him and every single thing he does for you.

Both of you being relatively a new couple, it does take a big toll on you both because you aren't used to saying or listening to such kind words so often, but you both also know you wouldn't want to share this with anyone else.

"We're home," he looks at you with a smile on his face, as he gets out of his car, runs up to your side and helps you out. With an arm looped around your shoulders to help you maintain your balance, he leads you in to your home.

He takes you in to your room, and gently lets you lay down on your bed. It's a bit of a struggle, but he finally gets you to remove your outfit and replace it with a more comfortable one.

"Thank you Zach," you say, as he tucks you in your warm duvet. He leans in to press a kiss to your nose, and makes a mental note to leave a glass of water and an advil on your bedside table before he leaves.

As he is about to walk out, you call him out and stop him from leaving.

"What happened?" He asks, his hand on the light switch.

"I, I need Arlo, can you find him please he isn't here," Zach is confused on hearing these words, but when he sees tears starting to brim in your eyes, he knows this Arlo is important.

"Arlo? Babe I'm afraid I don't understand," he asks you, walking closer to you.

"Can you check under the bed please?"

Zach isn't sure what he's looking for, but he'll do anything for you. He leans down on his knees and looks below the bed, and of course, he makes out a silhouette of some stuffed toy under the bed. He reaches his hand out to grab onto it, and when he sees it, he realises he knows exactly what it is.

For one of your first dates, Zach took you to your local city carnival. He was determined to get you a good toy from any game, just like any good boyfriend would (his words, not yours), and after loads of struggle, a lot of pennies and many comforting hugs and words from you, he finally wins you one.

It's a little brown colored dinosaur stuffed toy, and Zach had no idea how attached you would get to it.

"You sleep with the stuffed animal I got you?" He asks, handing it to you as you take it and brush off the dust off it.

"Of course, I love it," you smile, tucking in the dinosaur with you. Zach can't help but give you another kiss, gently caressing your cheek as his lips trace yours.

He leaves the room to get the water and the pill, and when he comes back, he sees you already passed out. Arlo is tucked safely under your arm, and Zach knows he can watch this for hours on end.

Because you're his beautiful, drunken mess, and he wouldn't want you in any other way. (Well, maybe not this drunk, but you know what he means.)
