♥ CW: Dark content, mentions of suicide
♥ AN: I did a lot of research for this project but I'm no nurse, so please forgive me if any information is inaccurate. Keep in mind that I may end up changing some things in the future. I'm really excited about this one, so thanks so much for asking about it!
This is what you should have expected from a job in the medical field that didn’t require much qualifications. Working at an asylum wasn’t ideal, but they are incredibly desperate for new nurses. As most people are unable to handle the physical and mental toll that a place like this takes on someone.
The other nurses didn’t take you seriously, and they were going to make the transition for you more difficult than it needed to be. You are being assigned to a patient that is notorious for being problematic to work with. The other nurses use him to weed out the weak. Always shifting the new hires to care for him. They usually leave within the first week...

Ask a Phan! 5, 6, 30
I did answer 5 and 6 already, but this is such a good one! Thanks @jennyfair7 !
30) How does Erik look in your imagination?
HORRIBLE
In all seriousness, it really depends on the story that I’m writing; he does change a bit from fic to fic. The darker the story, the safer the assumption is that he’s pretty rough to look at…in some of my fluffier things, like Last Night in Paradise and Broken Things, he’s not quite as shocking. As a rule, I think of him as having similar deformities as those present in congenital syphilis (don’t google that). Mainly, less of a “skeleton-like” appearance, and more of a twisted, half-rotten, broken cartilage sort of deal, with a highly malformed, turned and split mouth, pointed or rotting teeth (Sorry!) and deformed/too small eyes, nose and ears. You could almost describe it as a flesh mask, stretching and transforming his features. My Erik always wears a black leather, full face mask (sometimes over his lips as well), unless he’s feeling dramatic.
I don’t really imagine him quite as thin as I think is common, although I do think I might imagine him taller haha. I sometimes HC him as having congenital syphilis, but that’s another story.
But I ALWAYS imagine him with a gorgeous, full head of hair (because he deserves it, and also, what else is Christine supposed to hold on to?)

Note
The creator of the original leatherface stated that the reason why he wears a mask is because he doesn't know how to identify himself without it. It's his only way for him to express his personality. That's what's originally scary about this character, there is "nothing" behind the mask. Leatherface does not exist without his skin mask. Although, you could be right on him having syphilis, but i don't think that's why he wears a mask. Your theory is very interesting and plausible though ^^
Just to support what I was saying about his teeth (because I’m a goof who forgot to attach supporting images in the original post kdgjsdkfgh) here is an example of the condition that I theorised Bubba might have (Hutchinson’s Incisors).
I agree that a congenital defect is unlikely to be the reason for him wearing his masks as the creators have already given a reason for it but I think syphilis is plausible for some of his other issues. The poor baby just needs a hug.

So our lecturer for today flashed this picture in class:
It’s called Hutchinson’s teeth. This is one of the signs of congenital syphilis.
and i only had two anime characters in mind:
I’m not saying they have syphilis though...its just a fun fact that you can actually have teeth which is slightly similar to Rin’s due to an infection.

What every parent should know about Hutchinson’s teeth?
Hutchinson's Teeth is a dental developmental anomaly characterised by peg-like or screwdriver-shaped teeth. Most teeth form abnormally as a result of calcium metabolic abnormalities. Hutchinson's teeth, on the other hand, are the result of an infectious illness known as "Congenital Syphilis". unexpectedly it is usually passed on to a child by his or her mother.
How does Congenital Syphilis affect teeth?
Congenital syphilis is a contagious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. This condition is easily transmitted when a person contacts an infected individual's sores, therefore adults can transmit syphilis through physical contact.
It means that infants born to affected moms become infected during delivery or via the placenta.
Babies who survive exhibit some developmental anomalies known as the Hutchinson Triad. They include:
Hutchinson Teeth
Labyrinthitis
Interstitial Keratitis
Will a child develop Hutchinson teeth without syphilis?
No. Hutchinson teeth are caused by the impact of syphilis. Simply said, the indications of this disorder include notched incisors and mulberry molars.
Meanwhile, there is another severe hereditary issue known as dental dysplasia. It affects a tooth's dentition production, which leads to a root deformity. This causes the teeth to grow in an unusual form. Dental dysplasia produces malformed teeth that are not syphilitic.
What are Hutchinson’s teeth treatments available?
Dentists diagnose malformed teeth using imaging methods such as X-rays. Sometimes a blood test is required to determine whether the child has syphilis. Depending on the degree of deformation, dentists prescribe any of the following:
Dental crowns
Dental Bridges
Dental fillings
Teeth braces or other orthodontic appliances.
Bottom line
Do you want to keep Hutchinson's teeth in your young champ?
If so, you should take efforts to treat syphilis. The good news is that if treated early enough, this illness can be cured. A pregnant woman should receive syphilis therapy before the 16th week of pregnancy.
Otherwise, the child would develop notched teeth and other Hutchinson symptoms, even if the mother was healed and recovered from syphilis.

Hutchinson Teeth in Congenital Syphilis
Hutchinson teeth are smaller and more widely spaced than normal and are notched on their biting surfaces. The sides of the teeth taper toward the biting edges. The upper central incisors of the permanent (not the deciduous) teeth are most often affected. These teeth are a sign of congenital syphilis.

Syphilis!
Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum. This is a spirochaete, with a low reflective index, and it is motile using its spiral shape to propel itself (it has internal flagella attached to the cytoplasmic membrane). It is too thin to visualise with gram staining, but it can be viewed using dark-field, electron, Steiner silver stain and fase-contrast methods.
Treponema palladium can also cause Yaws (burrows under the skin), Pinta (hyperkeratosis) and Bejel (much more like syphilis, but not an STI; spread using same cooking utensils).
There are 3 stages of syphilis:
Primary: Chancre: immune response causes tissue degradation without pain, which eventually disappears.
Secondary: 6-8 weeks after infection, patients present with generalised malaise and rashes, even palmar rashes. This is systemic.
Tertiary: after 3-30 years of a latent period, symptoms can reappear, including gummas across body/tongue (do not contain many bacteria cells, mainly an immune response), cardiovascular/meningovascular lesions (leading to aneurisms/strokes), and ‘general paresis of the insane’, aka neurosyphilis (hypersensitivity in the brain).
Lesions from syphilis often allow secondary infections to occur, such as S. aureus.
Spread:
Syphilis spreads HORIZONTALLY as an STI or via contaminated blood. It spreads VERTICALLY as congenital syphilis.
Congenital syphilis is typified with Hutchinson’s teeth, Sabre teeth, bone lesions and neurosyphilis; however it can present anywhere between 5-25 years old. The mother should be treated prophylactically if there is a risk.
Diagnosis:
Using exudate/biopsy from chancre.
Using serology to identify reagin, an antibody produced during body damage, using VDRL/RPR testing. FTA serology finds antibodies specific to T. pallidum. These tests rely on antigen and antibody complexes binding to an anti-human antibody which is conjugated to a fluorophor at the FAB region for visualisation.
It is found highest between the ages of 20-40, and is higher in men: 9:1. It mostly affects men who have sex with men. Education around HIV and AIDS also decreased the incidence.
Treatment:
Benzylpenicillin or a macrolide (bacteriostatic, such as the new azithromycin) are used to block the peptide exit tunnel of T. pallidum’s 50S ribosomal subunit.
Old treatments: Mercury, salvarsan, malaria (increases temperature beyond limits of the bacteria), and penicillin.

Veneral Disease- A complete Overview
Veneral Disease, (Syphilis) is a disease caused by a type of bacteria known as Treponema Pallidum. It is a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It is about in 2016 that the cases for Syphilis rose to 88000 in number. It is seen that number of cases of women were seen decreasing when compared to men. However, men who have sex with men have shown more cases. Veneral Disease is difficult to be diagnosed as there are cases where people have been suffering from it from years without having any knowledge about it. If it remains uncured for a long period of time it can cause damage to heart and brain. It can be passed to others only through direct contact. Sharing toilets, wearing another person's clothes or using their utensils can cause no harm.
Veneral Disease Symptoms
The first sign of Veneral Disease are a small, painless sore either on the sexual organs, rectum or inside the mouth, known as chancre which people fail to notice it at the initial stages. Veneral Disease is found be more infectious in the first two stages.
Veneral Disease Stages
The four stages of Veneral Disease are-
Primary
Secondary
Primary Veneral Disease Chancre
The primary stage occurs within 3-4 weeks of coming in contact with bacteria as a small, round sore called chancre. It is highly infectious and painful and may appear wherever the bacteria have entered the body like mouth, genitals and rectum. It is transferred through direct contact usually during sexual activity which includes oral sex as well. The sore is seen within 3 weeks but it may take about 10-90 days to appear. However, in the initial stage it may remain between 2-6 weeks.
Secondary Veneral Disease Chancre
At this stage, the skin rash and a sore throat ma have developed. The rashes are found on the palms and soles particularly. The other symptoms include headaches, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, fever, weight loss, hair loss and aching joints. These symptoms are found to be so common that they are mistaken with other diseases or they are neglected. However, even if these symptoms are treated or left unseen they are bound to go away but the disease still says.
Veneral Disease Test
Veneral Disease Test should be done as soon as possible. Once the doctor has diagnosed they will undergo a blood test physical examination. In case of detection of sore, the samples of sore will be taken to search for Veneral Disease bacteria. In case of further diagnosis if the doctor suspects of nervous system disorder then a lumbar puncture or spinal tap may be required. The spinal fluid may be tested to detect for Veneral Disease bacteria. In case of pregnancy, the doctor might screen for testing the bacteria in order to prevent the fetus from getting infected with Congenital Veneral Disease .
Treatment of Veneral Disease
In case of primary and secondary Veneral Disease , it can be treated easily with a Penicillin Injection. It is said to be very effective in treating this disease. In case of people who are allergic to it, antibiotics such as-
Doxycycline
Azithromycin
Ceftriaxone can be given.
If neurosyphilis are detected then Penicillin injection shall be given daily, hospital stay may be required. The bacteria can only be killed in this treatment as well as easing the pain and discomfort. 3Meds, best online medical app in India provides these medicines through home delivery as well.
At the time of treatment it is necessary to avoid sexual contact until all sores are thoroughly healed.
Outlook
Veneral Disease is said to be cures easily if detected at the early stages. It is life threatening and can lead to serous complication sin the long run. It is necessary to take preventive measures like using dental dam or condoms during oral sex. It is also necessary to get your partners tested. Otherwise in case of pregnancy if the baby is detected with the same then it can damage the bones, teeth, eyes, ears and brain of the newborn too. Thus, it is not only dangerous for the current generation but it also effective for the next generation.

This post is getting way too long lmfao.
Triads and tribulations:
Acute (allergic) interstitial nephritis: fever, eosinophilia, maculopapular rash—rare, but look for the rash, WBC casts and temporal association with a druh (Pee-makers aka diuretics, Painkillers aka NSAIDs, PPIs, Penicillin/cotrimoxazole, rifamPicin)
Disseminated gonorrhoea: tenosynovitis, vesiculopustular rash (sparing palms/soles), migratory oligoarthritis (buzzword: inconsistent condom usage; do not confuse with rheumatic fever, bc gonorrhoea can also cause pharyngitis)
Normal pressure hydrocephalus: urinary incontinence, altered mentation, ataxic gait ('wet, wacky, wobbly'—not a great mnemonic but it really sticks doesn't it)
Congenital syphilis (Hutchinson's triad): deeply notched teeth, sensorineural hearing loss, interstitial keratitis
Plummer-Vinson: iron deficiency anaemia, dysphagia, post-cricopharyngeal (oesophageal web) (dysphagia is not solely due to web; also, iron supplementation will arrest further mucosal changes and web progression, but you still need to endoscopically dilate the web. Screen for cancer!)
Wernicke encephalopathy: altered mentation, ataxia, oculomotor dysfunction (either nerve palsies or nystagmus) (reversible! +confabulation and it becomes irreversible Korsakoff's)
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: conductive hearing loss, ipsilateral fixed/immobile elevation of the soft palate, ipsilateral headache
Others I'm not including: TTP, cholangitis, DM, massive blood loss, Virchow's
Whipple's triad can go fuck itself Whipple really just wanted his name on EVERYTHING, huh
Random shit what I keep forgetting
Okay to instill a MODICUM of discipline in my life I'm going to just post medical facts I need to know for any of the 320940231958 exams I'm taking this year that I keep forgetting no matter how many times my question banks try to drill them into my head.
For starters:
The coccal vaccines (pneumo, meningo), HBV and Hib are the most resistant to heat damage among all vaccines
Almost conversely, the pentavalent vaccine components (DPT, HBV, Hib) are the most freeze sensitive

Mercury salts. One night with Venus a lifetime of mercury. [Guy in chair chuckles] [Barges through door] Syphilis. [Turns to face] I beg your pardon? He was treated for syphilis that’s what gave his teeth a silver color. Cases of congenital syphilis can disfigure teeth. I’ve never heard of it discoloring them. I spoke with a dentist, Laszlo. Facts, figures, along with numerous suppositions. Pieces of a puzzle that right now lack form match no psychological outline.
