I just heard another writer trying to figure out which self-publishing route to take, and all I'll say is that I'm glad I found Draft2Digital. (More accurately, I'm grateful to my more knowledgeable writer friends who told me about it a couple years ago.) I don't even use the free services as much now that I've learned to do fancy formatting etc on my own, but it sure is nice that the option is there.
TL;DR: you upload a manuscript, they make it presentable and available everywhere from Amazon to your local bookstore, and they charge you zero dollars, only taking a cut of the profits they helped you make. A small cut.
They are run by Writer People who want to help other Writer People succeed, and it shows.
#psa#I've heard them give talks at writers' conferences a couple times#and it's always exciting new information#the last one led to several promos that I got to join in#which worked out great#and! they have good customer service#that's a biggie#especially after dealing with ingram#(ingram wants to work with large companies and only begrudgingly offers its services to individual authors)#(then refuses to help them in any competent way)#(I published two books through ingram and am NOT interested in going back)#(not now that I've found a vastly superior option)#tell your writer friends!#writer life#self-publishing#indie publishing#independent publishing#indie author life#getting published#Draft2Digital#writblr#writeblr

a wild moment at work today, when my boss (at the end of quite a long speech about why I should track my work better) essentially said, "but you're not getting any credit for your accomplishments!" and I realized I genuinely didn't care.
#I mean part of this is that she wants credit for being my boss and I simply have no desire to assist with that.#but it doesn't particularly matter to me that an email blast doesn't give me credit.#I know what I do. I know what value I offer. I have solid professional relationships and if they fired me....well.#(best not enjoy that particular gloating daydream too much.)#she brought up one of the attorneys who - during a recent group meeting - talked about collaborating with me#as an example of ''not getting credit''#and excuse me? the prompt was all about collaboration! the point was to give an example of how you collaborated!#the attorney even ASKED FOR PERMISSION before the meeting; I said that it was fine to use as an example#I got namechecked TWICE during that meeting for two different projects I was very pleased.#sorry you apparently hate your coworkers and feel the need to duel them in a conference room but I'm fine.#no wonder the company has to secretly manipulate you

sorry to be doing mcu throwback complaints again and EXTRA sorry for it to be about cacw and aou, sorry, i just am thinking again that if marvel had. in aou. committed to letting steve rogers see that captain america graffiti calling him a fascist with his own two eyes i would have forgiven many of their subsequent deeds and crimes
#like hey. hey shh. cacw but they engage with the politics of it and also have in a previous movie made him look at that graffiti. chefs kiss#WHAT IF THEY LET HIM MAKE A SPEECH. CACW BUT IF THEY LET STEVE TALK. UTOPIAN#i know asking that of mcu is like asking a toddler to build you a house but its just SO INTERESTING. TO ME#THAT IT WAS MADE AND FILMED AND THEN SCRAPPED#that they had steve's reaction be to just remove the helmet identifying him with that symbol and Continuing On#it's just interesting is all i am saying it's Interesting#note: i am obviously not saying steve's a fascist i just think it would be INTERESTING for Little Guy Of WW2 Fame to see it with his eyes#maybe i'm just still mad that my captain america press conference was stolen and turned into a peggy funeral idk. sigh#i'm done i'm done i promise. i don't have fatws open in another tab letting it microwave my brain. dont worry#kayvswords#mcu desperately trying to tell stories without telling an actual story is so genuinely fascinating to me#they want the themes and aesthetics without the substance but like. it's a story. it'll say something whether you want it to or not#idk idk idk. fatws is also i think peak mcu politics it's very funny. fascinating company. theyre so bad at movie#WHY DID CACW HAPPEN LIKE THAT. WHO THOUGHT IT WAS SMART. christ god#i feel like i should tag this as something so i don't get jumped but idk if that's still the vibe here kfdjglkjdfh

cute thing I have learned during this conference: a couple different players are working in the quantum computing space, and specifically working on encryption protection algorithms to defend against attacks---these algorithms are called "kyber" and "dilithium" respectively.
nerds.
#this is like a previous conference I attended where they discussed different merger&acquisition concepts#in terms of different courses of food. so there was the amuse-bouche the main course etc.#I remember that so well! a triumph of messaging really#.....also I know a lot more about technology than I thought I did. kind of impressed by myself#that I can at least keep up with discussions of encryption standards and interoperability/data cleansing etc.#no wonder the company has to secretly manipulate you

Eric Schmidt: AI misuse poses an ‘extreme risk’
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/eric-schmidt-ai-misuse-poses-an-extreme-risk/
Eric Schmidt: AI misuse poses an ‘extreme risk’
Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, has warned that AI misuse poses an “extreme risk” and could do catastrophic harm.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Schmidt cautioned that AI could be weaponised by extremists and “rogue states” such as North Korea, Iran, and Russia to “harm innocent people.”
Schmidt expressed concern that rapid AI advancements could be exploited to create weapons, including biological attacks. Highlighting the dangers, he said: “The real fears that I have are not the ones that most people talk about AI, I talk about extreme risk.”
Using a chilling analogy, Schmidt referenced the al-Qaeda leader responsible for the 9/11 attacks: “I’m always worried about the Osama bin Laden scenario, where you have some truly evil person who takes over some aspect of our modern life and uses it to harm innocent people.”
He emphasised the pace of AI development and its potential to be co-opted by nations or groups with malevolent intent.
“Think about North Korea, or Iran, or even Russia, who have some evil goal … they could misuse it and do real harm,” Schmidt warns.
Oversight without stifling innovation
Schmidt urged governments to closely monitor private tech companies pioneering AI research. While noting that tech leaders are generally aware of AI’s societal implications, they may make decisions based on different values from those of public officials.
“My experience with the tech leaders is that they do have an understanding of the impact they’re having, but they might make a different values judgement than the government would make.”
Schmidt also endorsed the export controls introduced under former US President Joe Biden last year to restrict the sale of advanced microchips. The measure is aimed at slowing the progress of geopolitical adversaries in AI research.
Global divisions around preventing AI misuse
The tech veteran was in Paris when he made his remarks, attending the AI Action Summit, a two-day event that wrapped up on Tuesday.
The summit, attended by 57 countries, saw the announcement of an agreement on “inclusive” AI development. Signatories included major players like China, India, the EU, and the African Union.
However, the UK and the US declined to sign the communique. The UK government said the agreement lacked “practical clarity” and failed to address critical “harder questions” surrounding national security.
Schmidt cautioned against excessive regulation that might hinder progress in this transformative field. This was echoed by US Vice-President JD Vance who warned that heavy-handed regulation “would kill a transformative industry just as it’s taking off”.
This reluctance to endorse sweeping international accords reflects diverging approaches to AI governance. The EU has championed a more restrictive framework for AI, prioritising consumer protections, while countries like the US and UK are opting for more agile and innovation-driven strategies.
Schmidt pointed to the consequences of Europe’s tight regulatory stance, predicting that the region would miss out on pioneering roles in AI.
“The AI revolution, which is the most important revolution in my opinion since electricity, is not going to be invented in Europe,” he remarked.
Prioritising national and global safety
Schmidt’s comments come against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over AI’s dual-use potential—its ability to be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes.
From deepfakes to autonomous weapons, AI poses a bevy of risks if left without measures to guard against misuse. Leaders and experts, including Schmidt, are advocating for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while addressing these dangers head-on.
While international cooperation remains a complex and contentious issue, the overarching consensus is clear: without safeguards, AI’s evolution could have unintended – and potentially catastrophic – consequences.

let me break down the basic plot of what I’m reading
“The small scrappy underdog company you’ve just been hired at is full of the hottest men you’ve ever seen, and they’re all orphans.”
real. that shit made me scream.
#A guy leaned over at a conference gossiping to another guy overheard by the main character and said#“Yeah and I heard they’re all orphans.”#oh no the hot scrappy start up guys and your hr violation of a boss (in the non existent hr. company too small) are ALL orphans.#everyone at the conference is so mean to them and they’re ALL orphans#i think in the romance genre an adult orphan man is like a kitten with three legs

i know that doctors not being able to do stuff is the reason my job even exists, but every once in a while i'll get a request from one of my doctors to do something for them and there IS a part of me that goes: okay i can do this. but you get that you can ALSO do this right? like you have all the skills and information you need to complete this on your own without any input from me. not only that, but this thing you want me to do is something you are actually SUPPOSED to do yourself, so it would really make more sense for you to do it anyway instead of involving me.
#liveblogging life#this faculty wants me to make their registration account and sign them up for a conference btw#im like. okay i CAN. but this really feels like something you can do lmao#i think it's bc it's an expensive fee so she wants me to pay with a company card instead of paying directly lol
