While the New Year’s Day Plunge attracts the crowds, it is these closed weekend swims that maintain the traditions of a club founded in 1903. As a guest I have joined them on occasion for their invigorating afternoons, where the body’s reaction to ten to fifteen minutes of forty-degree water is first flight then fight. Over the course of the winter of 1990, the photographer Peter Kayafas remarkably managed to endure these sensations while documenting the club mid-dunk. Over the following two decades, the experience then brought him back to document Coney’s more numerous summer swimmers. A suite of these pictures spanning both seasons has now been collected in 'Peter Kayafas: Coney Island Waterdance,' a new hardcover book featuring thirty duotone images and published by Purple Martin Press. At 116th Coney Island Polar Bear Club first of year Plunge that I attended with NYC Photographers Meetup group. Very apropos for Brooklyn’s Coney Island the birthplace of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, it’s a Nathan’s Hot Dog flanked by her condiments mustard, relish and ketchup@posing for me prior to the plunge. Nice review of 'Peter Kayafas: Coney Island Waterdance' @dailymail via linkinbio!⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Dusica Sue Malesevic writes, "When Peter Kayafas moved to NYC, he knew exactly where he wanted to go to photograph: Coney Island.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Packed with people, attractions and characters, the seaside has long lured photographers – from Walker Evans to Weegee – and Kayafas wanted to see what he could contribute to its chronicling.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ On his first trip to the Brooklyn beach, he saw the men and women of the @coney_island_polarbear_club barreling into the biting winter water. He told DailyMail.com: 'Right away, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.'⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ That encounter on a November day in 1990 sparked his decades-long documentation of the destination. Kayafas was the first photographer to take the plunge with the Polar Bears, at least according to them, and take their picture while in the water.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ After that winter, Kayafas returned to the ocean summer after summer and hiding his camera underwater until the last moment, he made black-and-white portraits of people swimming, clinging, diving, freezing and leaping.
