Understanding Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Imaging
Cone Beam CT (CBCT) imaging is a specialized form of computed tomography (CT) scanning that utilizes a cone-shaped x-ray beam to produce detailed, three-dimensional images of the patient's anatomy. Unlike traditional CT scanners, which use fan-shaped x-ray beams and are primarily designed for imaging larger areas of the body, CBCT scanners are optimized for capturing high-resolution images of specific regions, such as the oral and maxillofacial area, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) region.
Applications in Dental and Maxillofacial Imaging
One of the most significant applications of CBCT imaging is in dental and maxillofacial imaging. CBCT scanners provide dentists, oral surgeons, and maxillofacial specialists with detailed, three-dimensional views of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures, allowing for more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning. From dental implants and orthodontic interventions to oral surgeries and endodontic procedures, CBCT imaging plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of dental care.
Orthopedic and Orthodontic Applications
In orthopedic and orthodontic practices, CBCT imaging is invaluable for assessing skeletal structures, joint abnormalities, and dental occlusion. Orthopedic surgeons rely on CBCT scans to plan surgeries, evaluate fractures, and guide the placement of implants with precision. Similarly, orthodontists use CBCT imaging to assess dental and skeletal relationships, identify abnormalities, and develop personalized treatment plans for patients undergoing orthodontic interventions.

Understanding Root Canal Treatment and Tooth Extraction: Which is Better?
When faced with severe tooth decay or damage, many individuals find themselves weighing the pros and cons of Root Canal Treatment versus tooth extraction. Both procedures have their merits, but the best choice depends on your specific dental condition, long-term goals, and overall oral health. Let’s delve into the details to help you make an informed decision.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root Canal Treatment is a restorative procedure designed to save a severely damaged or infected tooth. During the process, the infected pulp inside the tooth is carefully removed, and the area is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown, ensuring it functions like a natural tooth.
Root Canal Treatment is often the preferred choice for maintaining your natural teeth. It eliminates pain, preserves your bite alignment, and prevents the need for complex dental replacements.

What is Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction involves the complete removal of a damaged or decayed tooth. While this procedure can provide immediate relief from severe pain or infection, it creates a gap in the dental arch. This missing tooth may lead to issues such as shifting teeth, bone loss, and changes in facial structure if not replaced with an implant, bridge, or denture.

Comparing Root Canal Treatment and Tooth Extraction
1. Pain Management
Root Canal Treatment often relieves pain caused by infection or decay. While the procedure itself may cause slight discomfort, modern techniques ensure minimal pain. On the other hand, tooth extraction may also involve discomfort during and after the procedure, followed by a healing period.
2. Preservation of Natural Tooth
One of the primary advantages of Root Canal Treatment is that it allows you to keep your natural tooth. This helps maintain your smile’s aesthetics, chewing efficiency, and overall dental health. Tooth extraction, in contrast, removes the tooth entirely, requiring a replacement to restore functionality and appearance.
3. Cost Considerations
The charge for root canal treatment may vary depending on the complexity of the case and the materials used for restoration. While it may seem costlier upfront compared to extraction, the long-term benefits outweigh the initial expense. Tooth extraction, combined with the cost of replacements like dental implants or bridges, can be equally or more expensive in the long run.
4. Advanced Diagnostic Tools
Advanced diagnostic tools like cone beam CT scans aid in planning both procedures. These scans provide detailed insights into the tooth’s condition and surrounding structures, ensuring accurate and effective treatment.
5. Oral Health Implications
Preserving your natural tooth with Root Canal Treatment supports overall oral health, as it prevents adjacent teeth from shifting and maintains the integrity of your jawbone. Tooth extraction, however, may lead to complications if the gap isn’t promptly addressed.

When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
While Root Canal Treatment is often the better choice, tooth extraction may be unavoidable in cases where:
The tooth is fractured beyond repair.
Severe bone loss around the tooth exists.
Advanced gum disease makes preservation impossible.

Conclusion
When deciding between Root Canal Treatment and tooth extraction, it’s crucial to consult an experienced dentist in Thane or dentist in Mumbai who can assess your condition and recommend the best course of action. Preserving your natural tooth through Root Canal Treatment is generally preferable for maintaining oral health and functionality, but tooth extraction may be necessary in specific cases.
At Dr. Ashwadhi’s Multispeciality Dental Clinic, we specialize in advanced procedures, from dental braces cost in Mumbai to dental cap zirconia restorations, ensuring comprehensive care for every patient. 5 months post root canal, unexplainable severe pain but 3-D scan finds nothing wrong
This is gonna be a long explanation but I am desperate for answers. Last December I had a bridge done on my lower molars on the right. I ended up needing a root canal on the 2nd molar. It took about a month for the pain to subside and 2 months for the tenderness to go away. Flash forward to April of this year, I was eating and bit down weird on something crunchy and felt immediate pain on top and bottom. After several weeks the pain never went away. It felt like my upper 2nd molar on the right above the bridge was throbbing constantly. After the cold test the dentist did, I felt no cold at all on that tooth and they determined the tooth was dead. So in June, I decided to get it extracted since I'd had a root canal in January on the lower molar and insurance was maxed out. Several weeks after the extraction, I was still in a ton of pain and now my 1st molar next to the extraction was incredibly sensitive and tender. My regular dentist did an xray and said my 1st molar looked to have infection. They even showed me and it did look like a bad infection. They convinced me to do a root canal on that one since it was my last upper molar on that side. An endodontist did the root canal in August and said the tooth was fractured but no infection, despite what my dentist said. It was by far the most excruciating dental work I've ever had. Before I even left the office I was in severe pain. It took about 2 weeks for the throbbing and soreness to subside, but it never fully went away. I got the permanent crown, and once I did that the pain increased again. I wear a professional night guard and I felt it wasn't fitting over the new crown well at all and causing increased tenderness and pain, especially in the mornings. So I had them remove the back of my night guard from over that tooth. I noticed a difference within a few days that it wasn't near as tender.Well after a while the pain comes back severe again. I am often waking up in the middle of the night with pain all the way up into my temple and ear. At this point I just want to have it extracted. I get referred to an oral surgeon who does a 3-D CT cone beam scan to check for infection or root cracks etc. He finds nothing wrong at all with that tooth and recommends I wait to have it extracted. So I go to another oral surgeon for a 2nd opinion. They do their own 3-D scan and even send it to a radiologist who specializes in reading them. He finds nothing wrong. I said could it be my lower molar under the bridge? It does feel spongey when I press on it, like it sinks down and comes back up but I visually don't see it move. But the pain on top does radiate to the bottom teeth which sometimes makes it hard to pinpoint the exact spot. They examine the scan for all my teeth on the right side and find no issues. At this point, both oral surgeons recommend I see a neurologist for possible nerve damage. But I feel no tingling or numbness associated with nerve damage. I only feel pain, sometimes sharp and throbbing and sometimes a dull ache. I even went to my ENT to rule out sinus issues. At this point I feel hopeless, I can't get answers. The neurologist cannot see me until April 2025. I was told if it is nerve damage or irritation, that getting this tooth extracted could make it worse. Nothing helps this pain and it's almost daily. Has anyone experienced this? I feel so depressed it's been 7 months of daily pain and constantly questioning everything.

Tumblr media
In the world of modern dentistry, precision is key to effective treatment. One groundbreaking technology transforming dental care is the CBCT scan. If you've been searching for "CBCT scan dental near me," you’re likely seeking accurate diagnostics for complex dental issues. At Dr. Aburas Dental Center, we provide advanced CBCT scans, offering unparalleled insights into your oral health.
What Is a CBCT Scan?
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a specialized type of X-ray equipment used in dentistry. Unlike traditional X-rays, CBCT scans provide detailed 3D images of your teeth, jaw, soft tissues, and bone structure. This comprehensive view helps dentists accurately diagnose and plan treatments with precision.
Why Do You Need a CBCT Scan?
A CBCT scan is often recommended for cases where detailed imagery is necessary to ensure the best possible outcome. Some scenarios include:
Dental Implant Planning CBCT scans provide a precise view of bone density and structure, ensuring optimal implant placement.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Assess the position and impact of wisdom teeth on surrounding tissues for a safe extraction process.
Orthodontic Treatment Evaluate jaw alignment, tooth positioning, and underlying structures for accurate braces or aligner planning.
Root Canal Treatment Detect intricate details of root canals and surrounding areas for successful endodontic treatment.
TMJ Disorders CBCT scans help diagnose temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues by providing clear images of the joint and surrounding structures.
Oral Pathology Identify cysts, tumors, or other abnormalities for early intervention.
Facial Trauma or Injury Examine fractures or damage to the jaw and facial bones with precision.
Benefits of CBCT Scans
Detailed 3D Imaging Provides comprehensive views of dental structures, allowing for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Minimally Invasive The scan is quick, non-invasive, and comfortable for patients.
Reduced Radiation Exposure CBCT scans use significantly less radiation compared to traditional CT scans, ensuring safety.
Improved Treatment Outcomes Precision imaging leads to better treatment decisions and results.
Wide Application Suitable for a variety of dental and maxillofacial needs, from implants to orthodontics.
What to Expect During a CBCT Scan
Preparation You’ll be asked to remove any jewelry or metallic objects that could interfere with the scan.
Positioning You’ll either sit or stand in the CBCT machine, and your head will be positioned for optimal imaging.
The Scan The machine rotates around your head, capturing detailed 3D images in under a minute.
Analysis The dentist reviews the scan to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your unique needs.
