Whoops
hello generation loss enjoyers. it has been several months since the release of ranboos project, how have yall been? im going to be insane.
Many folks have known me as the lminal space connosieur, dead malls and fucked up houses in particular being my strongsuit for both their sex appeal and the amount of symbolism they can all hold.
Watching Gen Loss with my friends through a hostage situation was a wonderful experience! upon the reveal of the Showfall Media offices being inside a rented out mall, there was a split second where I was a bit unamused at the lack of effort put into integrating the mall's architecture into the studio's office. There were only a few empty stores being used with at the bare minimum some chairs and desks, half the mall was still closed, the mini maps stands were still up, and the food court's usage as the streamers hub was very just. like. thats a whole ass food court. without the people walking around the only way to actually know what the hel this was being used for was the giant white banner that just said showfall media like a fraternity's house claiming its territory.
But then, as the episode 2 closed out, almost instantly it hit me why. why the mall was still a mall, why there was little to no integration for the set- it was on purpose. it was supposed to just be a studio crammed inside a mall. a dead mall, to be precise.
first lets get into the anatomy of what makes a dead mall dead. Around the 1980's a rise in popularity of the commercial supermalls began to spread, the american consumerist dream was rampant with a greater demand of fast fashion, merchandise, and all kinds of strange trinkets for the average american to waste their money on. It was capitalism's wettest dream, but as the years went on there came a steady decline in popularity. Sometimes the competing businesses ended up putting each other out of stock, maybe the trends began dying off, and in certain areas consistent crime rates drove away costumers.
Then in the mid 2000's the stock market crash ended up pushing several people into poverty, the lower class unable to afford the luxury goods offered at shopping centers. Then online shopping took society in a deathgrip, further pushing away the desire for in-public purchasing. Brands took notice and began selling online-exclusive products. In the late 2010's the sightings of several "dead malls" were on an alltime high, some being left to rot while others were demolished all together in favor of empty concrete spaces.
Corporate response to this was one of two things; continously invest in the "Anchor Stores" (big chain stores like Macys or Forever 21 that brought in more customers, usually stationed at the ends of the mall). Meanwhile the smaller businesses inside would be shut down one by one to save costs, until eventually the anchor stores themselves would be forced to leave. Sometimes the Anchor Stores would leave beforehand, not wanting to waste money investing in a deadend location. the decline is faster, the mall rots quicker. The company sells the lot to the biggest buyer and destroys what little remains.
Then there are times where the mall itself is sold off to another bigger company, in hopes of more funds to rejuvenate the center. Majority of the time the mall will enter a large reconstruction designed to look more appealing, mor modern. In actually, the personality of the malls architecture is stripped like the skin of prey. The colors and vibrant shapes of the late 1900’s, the waterfalls with rocky beds and marbled beige tiles, all replaced in favor of sharp black on white edge and stainless steel fencing. The occasional shrub here or there, maintained by automation. Lights too bright, all glimmer, all space. Sometimes it works, sometimes the mall is reborn as the pinnacle of luxury again! Sometimes it rots in shiny chrome, a corpse dragged along in the hopes of attracting attention. All it does is stink and bloat, a miserable display.
I hope you begin to catch what im saying.
In Generation Loss, the Showfield Social Experiments are commentary on streamer culture and the damaging relationship between a content creator & their platform. Visualized by Ranboo being pushed into dangerous scenarios for the sake of entertainment, their disposable friends forced into the flat archetypes the fandoms have labeled them as.
They were all vibrant young folks once, bright with personality and that raw humanity filled with flaws and voice cracks. Shitty microphones and inconsistent uploads, some were barely finishing high school. Then they became big, almost too big. They were characters now, and just like Ranboo’s teammates the perception of them as humans were dumbed down to memorable trademarks. Streamers and Content Creators alike had to be marketable now, and when the time comes where they lost their popularity sometimes they sign off to groups and organizations to help boost them up again. They are stripped of their rawness again. Theres a reason their artforms are called “content”.
So it makes sense that Showfall Media, the personification of the content creators downfall, would do the same to a Mall. The corpse of the center is repurposed loosely to fit the studios purpose. It is empty, it is hollow, it is dead. Low costs, big risks- just like Gen Loss Ranboo.
basically
Content Creators are Dead Malls.

Bahama Cruise 2022, Part 26, May 19 Normans Cay, New Providence, Bimini
Tumblr media
This is a C-46 Curtis Commando aircraft used by Pablo Escobar to run drugs to America. It crashed shortly after takeoff from his island, Normans Cay. It is one of the more popular snorkel sites in the Exumas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am very partial to this aircraft because I flew three of them for Air Haiti back in the late 70’s. We actually passed over this site on our weekly trips to and from Miami. Everyone knew that Escobar was using the island for drug running.
Tumblr media
Glorious sunset west of Normans Cay. Nancy had spent the day paddleboarding, while Lars ran the dinghy around the island. Things were winding down. The next we would sail to New Providence, where Lars would fly home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy baked some cinnamon rolls for the trip today.
Tumblr media
Great sail “down Island” which is actually northbound. From Staniel and Black Point back when boats did not have engines. They used the term “down Island” which really meant sailing down wind with the predominate trade winds. Nassau is north but down wind, hence “down Island”. Georgetown is south but upwind, hence they would go “up island”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy is at the helm while I kick back in the bean bag chair.
Tumblr media
Palm Cay Marina on the south east corner of New Providence. We spent three nights here. Lars flew out the second day. We went walk about checking out a real world grocery store. Kind of recompressing back into city life. I wanted to get some Ricardo Coconut Rum, but the liquor store was closed on Sunday. You never know what a business really does or sells. The liquor store door was locked but there was a another door real close by. So I tried it and it opened. There was a table full of liquor including Ricardo Coconut Rum. All around the walls were hairdressing driers over chairs. With one lady sweeping the floor. I ask if this is the liquor store. She explains she had her birthday party the night before and this was left over liquor. She insisted that I just take a bottle of rum. So nice, but I left some money on the table and then left.
Tumblr media
With Lars gone we move the boat to West Bay and anchor. Only a couple of boats left at this point. Sounding the conch horn at sunset.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Great day the next day with an easy crossing of TOTO (Tongue Of The Ocean) with following 3 foot seas. We shot through northwest channel and angled to the south of Mackie Bank. Sailed up to 0100 and anchored well off of the channel for a couple of hours. It was blowing hard and we snuggled up to some shallows but it was still a rolly anchorage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an iconic wreck south of Bimini. This is the remains of Sapona a concrete ship abandoned in 12 feet of water. It was only 3 miles away from our anchor spot.
Tumblr media
We spent 1 night at Brown’s Marina checking out of the Bahamas. Luckily they changed the rules and you do not need to check out of the country anymore. Above is one of the many Bull sharks that patrol the marinas in Bimini looking for fish scraps from anglers cleaning their fish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After clearing outbound we motored around to Radio Beach and anchored for the night. This would give us a straight shot across the Gulf Stream at daybreak back to the U.S..
A power boat pulled up and dropped anchor near us. But he could not get his anchor to dig in. When he tried a second time, he realized the anchor had come off the end of the chain and was missing. They tried a couple of times to free dive down from their dinghy but could not retrieve the anchor. The sun was setting and you could tell they were getting frustrated and about to leave.
somI called them on the radio and offered to dive up the anchor. Turns out the Captain was the only free diver on the boat and he had ruptured his ear drum earlier. They picked me up by dinghy and I was able to get a line on the anchor for them. The shackle had been “moused” with stainless steel wire. But it had broken with constant use over 3 months. After checking mine, I found the same thing.
Great day of motor sailing back to the US. This was Memorial Day weekend with a constant parade of power boats heading to Bimini. Glad we were out of there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Admiral is secured by her sailing harness and tether, while crossing “the Stream”. We cross the reef north of Fowey Lighthouse.
Tumblr media
Cutting through Stiltsville we avoid the party boats at No Name Harbor.
Tumblr media
Having cleared US Customs while sailing down Biscayne Bay, Nancy lowers the Bahamian Courtesy flag. The flag is a bit more tattered than I would like. It is a badge of honor for those cruisers who have been in country for a long time. When you first get to the Bahamas the flag is bright and crisp. People can tell you are new.
Tumblr media
First sunset back in the States while anchored near Caesar Creek. One more day back to our dock to end the season.
Tumblr media
Before I shaved my beard I had to get a photo next to a drawing of my father after his crossing the Atlantic in 1968. Both of our beards about three months old. What do you think, any resemblance?
Thanks for following along with our first trip sailing three months through the Exumas in 2022. If you want to follow our second season use the search engine in Tumblr, typing in: SeaBreeze2023

Fixings and Fasteners: Essential Components for Secure and Durable Installations
Tumblr media
In construction, manufacturing, and DIY projects, Fixings And Fasteners are essential components that ensure materials are securely attached, stable, and capable of withstanding stress over time. From securing heavy structural elements to holding smaller parts in place, the right choice of fixings and fasteners can make a significant difference in the safety, strength, and durability of an installation.
This guide will explore the different types of fixings and fasteners, their uses, and how to select the right ones for various applications.
What Are Fixings and Fasteners?
Fixings and fasteners are hardware devices used to join or secure materials together. They come in various forms, including screws, bolts, nails, rivets, anchors, and clips, each designed for specific tasks. These components can be used for permanent or temporary connections and are critical in ensuring that structures and assemblies hold up under mechanical forces such as tension, compression, and shear.
Types of Fixings and Fasteners
Screws
Screws are one of the most commonly used fasteners. They are designed to be driven into materials like wood, metal, or plastic with a twisting motion. Screws come in a wide range of types, such as wood screws, machine screws, and self-tapping screws, each suited to different materials and applications.
Common Applications: Furniture assembly, decking, and general construction.
Bolts and Nuts
Bolts are threaded fasteners typically used with nuts to secure two or more parts together. They are ideal for applications where high strength and durability are required. Bolts and nuts come in different sizes, grades, and materials, including steel, stainless steel, and brass.
Common Applications: Heavy machinery, automotive, structural steelwork, and construction.
Nails
Nails are used to fasten materials by driving them through one or more layers using a hammer or nail gun. Unlike screws or bolts, nails do not have threads, making them suitable for applications where high shear strength is needed.
Common Applications: Framing, roofing, and carpentry.
Anchors
Anchors are used to secure fasteners to surfaces like concrete, brick, or drywall, where screws or bolts alone would not be effective. There are several types of anchors, including wall plugs (also known as rawl plugs), toggle bolts, and concrete anchors.
Common Applications: Hanging heavy objects like shelves, fixtures, and cabinets on walls.
Rivets
Rivets are permanent fasteners used to join two or more materials by deforming the head after insertion. They are commonly used in applications where access to both sides of the material is limited.
Common Applications: Aircraft assembly, shipbuilding, and metalworking.
Washers
Washers are thin plates with a hole in the middle, used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, like a screw or bolt. They help prevent the fastener from loosening and can protect the material surface from damage.
Common Applications: With screws and bolts in mechanical and structural installations.
Clips and Clamps
Clips and clamps are fasteners that hold objects together or secure cables and pipes in place. They are often used in scenarios where frequent disassembly or adjustment is necessary.
Common Applications: Cable management, piping systems, and automotive assembly.
Staples
Staples are U-shaped fasteners driven into materials using a staple gun or hammer. They are commonly used for attaching thin materials like fabric, paper, or insulation to wood or other surfaces.
Common Applications: Upholstery, packaging, and light construction.
Choosing the Right Fixings and Fasteners
Selecting the appropriate fixing or fastener for a project depends on several factors:
Material Type: Different materials require specific types of fasteners. For example, wood screws are designed for timber, while machine screws are suitable for metal or plastic.
Load Requirements: The strength and load-bearing capacity of the fastener should match the weight and mechanical forces it will need to withstand. Bolts and anchors are often used in high-load applications, while screws and nails are better for lighter tasks.
Environmental Conditions: In outdoor or corrosive environments, such as marine or chemical industries, materials like stainless steel or galvanized fasteners are preferred for their resistance to rust and wear.
Installation Method: Consider how the fastener will be installed. Some fasteners, like nails and staples, are hammered in, while others, like screws and bolts, require tools like screwdrivers or wrenches.
Permanent vs. Temporary: If the assembly needs to be frequently disassembled and reassembled, choose fasteners like screws, bolts, or clamps. For permanent installations, rivets or nails might be more appropriate.
Common Applications of Fixings and Fasteners
Construction: Fasteners such as screws, bolts, and nails are used to assemble structures, secure frameworks, and attach components like doors and windows.
Manufacturing: In industries such as automotive and aerospace, fasteners like bolts, rivets, and clips ensure the secure attachment of parts that undergo mechanical stress.
Home Improvement: From hanging shelves to assembling furniture, various fixings and fasteners are used in everyday home projects.
Electrical Installations: Fasteners like anchors, clips, and clamps are essential for securing wiring and electrical components in place.
Conclusion
Fixings and fasteners are fundamental to nearly every construction, manufacturing, and DIY project. Selecting the right type based on material, load, and environmental factors ensures that your installation is secure, durable, and safe. With the vast range of options available, understanding the specific requirements of your project will guide you in choosing the most appropriate fixing or fastener for the job.

Choosing the Right Hardware
“Screws, Nails, and Anchors: Choosing the Right Hardware for Wood”
Tumblr media
Introduction
1. Screws:
·When to Use: Screws are versatile and ideal for projects where you need a strong and secure connection. They are excellent for joining pieces of wood, assembling furniture, and attaching hardware.
·Where to Choose: For indoor projects, standard wood screws are suitable. For outdoor or treated wood applications, use corrosion-resistant screws like stainless steel or coated screws to prevent rust and corrosion.
2. Nails:
·When to Use: Nails are great for fastening lighter materials or when you need a quick, temporary solution. They are often used in framing, moldings, and other structural applications.
·Where to Choose: Use galvanized or stainless steel nails for outdoor or moist environments to prevent rust. For interior projects, common nails or finish nails work well.
3. Anchors:
·When to Use: Anchors are essential for securing heavy objects or fixtures to walls or ceilings. They provide additional support and prevent items from falling.
·Where to Choose: Select anchors based on the wall material. For drywall, use plastic or self-drilling anchors. For concrete or masonry walls, choose expansion anchors or sleeve anchors. Make sure the anchor’s weight capacity matches the load you intend to hang.
Tumblr media
General Tips
1. Wood Type:
· Grain Orientation: Consider the grain orientation of the wood. When fastening into the end grain of a piece of wood, it’s more prone to splitting. In such cases, pre-drilling pilot holes is crucial to preventing this issue.
2. Length and Diameter:
· Thread Length: The length of the threaded portion of a screw should be sufficient to pass through the material you’re joining and provide enough grip. However, be cautious about using screws that are too long, as they can weaken the wood or protrude on the other side.
· Diameter: The diameter of the screw or nail affects its holding power. Larger diameter fasteners generally provide better grip, but be mindful of not making the hole too big, which can weaken the wood.
3. Fastener Head:
· Head Type: Different screw head types have specific uses. For example, flathead screws are ideal for countersinking, while pan head or round head screws provide a finished look. The choice of head type depends on both functionality and aesthetics.
4. Weight and Load:
· Load Calculation: Calculate the anticipated load on your woodworking project and ensure that the selected hardware can bear it. For heavy loads, consider using multiple fasteners and distributing the weight evenly.
· Weight Distribution: Keep in mind that the weight may not be evenly distributed. For instance, shelves may have more weight concentrated at certain points. Choose hardware and attachment points accordingly.
5. Weather Exposure:
· Material Selection: In outdoor applications or areas with high humidity, opt for hardware made of corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel or brass. These materials can withstand exposure to moisture and prevent rust or corrosion.
· Finish: Some screws and nails come with specialized finishes, such as galvanization or zinc coating, to enhance their resistance to weather and corrosion.
6. Pilot Holes and Clearance Holes:
· Pilot Holes: Drilling pilot holes before inserting screws or nails is essential to prevent wood splitting, especially in hardwoods. The pilot hole should be slightly smaller in diameter than the fastener.
· Clearance Holes: When using screws, consider using a clearance hole for the screw’s shank to pass through, allowing the threads to grip only in the material you’re attaching to, not the initial piece of wood.
7. Tools and Equipment:
· Quality Tools: Invest in high-quality drill bits, screwdrivers, and hammers. Good tools make the installation process easier and ensure a more secure attachment.
· Driver Bits: Use driver bits that match the fastener type (e.g., Phillips, Torx, square) to prevent stripping the screw heads.
8. Safety Considerations:
· Eye and Ear Protection: When drilling or hammering, wear appropriate eye and ear protection to safeguard against flying wood chips and loud noise.
· Proper Techniques: Ensure you’re using proper techniques when fastening hardware to avoid accidents or injury.
By taking into account these suggestions you can make informed choices when it comes to selecting and utilizing screws, nails and anchors for your woodworking endeavors. Thoughtfully considering these factors will lead to a secure woodworking journey.
