Vent/Rant (tw; mentions of suicide, no one did anything, my friend was just being kinda insensitive)

I muted a friend of mine on Discord.

I admit, it was a rather... impulsive decision. It was about a week ago. He's been quite irritating towards me for a while now.

While on Call, he'd talk about me. With me being there. He'd ask a question about me, but he wouldn't ask me, he'd ask all the other people in there. The people who wouldn't be able to answer him. I found it weird. So I told him.

He also became somewhat... inconsistent? Is that the right word? He'd suddenly start insulting me. A lot. And then, moments later, suck up to me. I'm the friend people tend to tease quite a bit. And I see why. I play along for the most part. But this felr different. I technically knew these were jokes, but they never felt like jokes.

He'd attempt to sweettalk me. But it only weirded me out further. I told him I'd like to talk and resolve those things. Because if we didn't talk, I'd just move on and be fine with it. He agreed to talk. We never talked. I admit, I never made another attempt to talk to him, either. Mainly because... I felt fine and I had already moved on for the most part.

So yea, I muted him. And even though it was an impulsive decision, it was one I'd deem right. I felt pretty good ever since making that decision. He, however, not so much.

But he'd continue to do the two things that led me to my decision. He still had my phone number, even sent me voice messages (containing irrelevant stuff) on there. He still had my discord @. He could've texted at any point. Could have asked me why I muted him. He could've called. He could've asked me to unmute him. But he didn't.

Instead, he kept crying to our mutual friends. On Discord. While I was on call. He asked them why I did it. But I didn't tell them. They never asked me and it didn't really concern them. And while I didn't hear him, I heard their responses.

Eventually, I did tell a friend. That was yesterday. And today, he told the guy I muted. Only after asking me if that was fine with me, of course. It was fine with me. I never hid my reasons. And I would have told him the moment he'd have asked.

So, what was his response?

Asking me for my reasons? Letting the topic rest?

No. He asked our friend whether he should tell me he's gonna kill himself. Our friend said no.

He still sent me that text.

It was a joke. I know it was a joke. But what a stupid fucking joke it was.

I laughed it off. The situation was too fucking absurd. My ex girlfriend pulled something similar on me. Threatened suicide if I broke up with her.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side

I've noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So I’ve been thinking about aspects of Will’s personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solace’s canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.

There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote

Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the camp's best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.

To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless he's, as Nico puts it, "under fire." In other words, the intense side of his personality doesn't come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.

Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nico's health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nico's shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nico's dire state.

"Coach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You can’t try that again."

"I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine."

"No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders."

Will is a healer. When he touches Nico's hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nico's being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasn't cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nico's life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.

Will is a calming prescence. He's a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.

He's one of the few people who's able to calm Clarisse's violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.

Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. "What about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It would’ve been nice if you’d foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didn’t break down when we needed it most!"

Rachel’s face turned as red as her hair. "That’s hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apollo’s gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it –"

"She’s right." Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. "Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel."

One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.  

But he knew it wouldn’t do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.

Will Solace saved the day.

He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.

"DON’T BE STUPID!" Will yelled. "LOOK!"

People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they can't wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.

And that's Will Solace's strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.

Will is a difficult character to write. There's a lot of dueling factors with his personality. He's calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. He's fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. He's laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. He's insecure but not melodramatic. He's very caring and protective but not pushy.

Will's personality confuses Nico sometimes too.

He’d always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.

The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.

Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesn't take things too seriously. He's able to alleviate Nico's moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a "dork" because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, he's able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percy's personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Will's soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. He's a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.

The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)

It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didn’t appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.

“Are—are you amused?” I demanded.

Will shrugged. “Well, it’s either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-old—”

“Sixteen,” I corrected. “Let’s go with sixteen.”

“A sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing arts—which I got from you—I still can’t figure out how to fix you.”

“There is no fixing this,” I said miserably. “I am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!”

Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. “Meg seems cool. She’s already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.”

The fiercer side of Will's personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesn't get more forceful than he has to.

Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.

1. He's insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.

"I agree," Will said. "I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war." He looked down at his own hands with distaste. "Unfortunately, I’m just a healer."

2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.

“I got it reattached,” Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. “I need somebody to keep him stable.”

I pointed to the woods. “But—”

“I know!” Will snapped. “Don’t you think I want to be out there searching too? We’re shorthanded for healers. There’s some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!”

I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.

3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.

Will laughed under his breath. “I’m terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Let’s get you on your feet."

Here's a second example.

I rested my hand on Will’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back by dawn.”

His mouth trembled ever so slightly. “How can you be sure?”

4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.

Nico rested his hand on Will’s shoulder. “Apollo, we were worried. Will was especially.”

In conclusion, Will Solace's personality is difficult to get correct. But don't worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee he'll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.

It actually turned out less angsty than I intended... Might revisit this one later. I was also inspired by this one piece of fanart I saw but can't find now, where Grian doesn't just have elytra he has actual parrot wings, but they’d been ripped off. He really doesn’t like being stuck on the ground.

Grian shades his eyes with one hand, gripping his new iron sword in the other, and surveys the desert beneath Monopoly Mountain. The sun is just rising, but the heat rising off the golden sands is already enough to sting his skin and a bead of sweat rolls down his neck. Heat waves shimmer deceptively, nearly making him miss the real form moving across the dunes.

He glances over his shoulder at Scar, but the red-lifer is currently distracted doing… something with the storage chests. There’s no way it’s organizing, but probably best not to ask; instead he takes the chance to slip away.

Sliding down the side of a massive dune, he skids to a stop just as Impulse reaches the foot of the mountain.

“Halt, who goes there?” Grian says, brushing sand off his jeans and holding up one hand to stop Impulse. “Friend or foe!”

“Friend, friend – always a friend.” Impulse grins, and raises both empty hands. “Just came to chat with Scar.”

Grian rolls his eyes. “You’ll leave with less gear than you came,” he warns. “Scar’s been scamming people out of their stuff all day.”

With a gesture, Impulse dismisses his concern. “I heard, I heard… which is why I brought extra.” He pulls a pair of enchanted iron shoes out of his rucksack and waves them temptingly.

That gets a chuckle out of Grian. “Clever.”

Down at the level of the desert the heat is worse than before, and he instinctively twitches his shoulders to fan his wings – but, of course, there’s nothing there. The rough edges of the stumps twitch restlessly under his shirt, and the dull pain he keeps trying to ignore spikes a little.

Impulse, narrowing his eyes, rearranges the strap of his rucksack and jerks his head toward the distant treeline. “You want to… take a walk?”

“You just got here,” Grian says, but he glances up the cliff toward where he left Scar. He could slip away, just for a little bit… “But sure – this place is blazing hot. I almost can’t think in this heat.”

“You’re telling me. Come on, there’s a little pond just over that first hill; we can cool off there.” Impulse turns and starts trudging back towards the distant shadows of the trees..

Grian follows him, his feet sinking into the soft, shifting sand. He hates how it drags him down, hates the way it gets into his shoes and between his toes, as if it’s trying to remind him with every step that he can’t escape it.

“You, ah… you okay there, G?” Impulse’s longer legs have taken him further ahead, but he stops and waits for Grian to catch up. “Looking a little… tired.”

“Just – hating gravity is all.” Grian forces a little laugh and doesn’t stop when he reaches Impulse, continuing on. Ahead of them, the shady forest promises cool relief. “Stupid, I know.”

“Ah.” Deliberately slowing to keep Grian’s pace, Impulse nods. “Yeah, I miss elytra. It’ll be great to get back to Hermitcraft and be able to fly again – I bet it wouldn’t even take two rockets to cross this entire world.”

Grian doesn’t answer, but his wing-stubs flutter again in frustration. He feels so heavy. So earth-bound in this place – this tiny world that ripped his wings from him and dropped him into a killing game he only had a slim chance of surviving.

“Oh… right.” Impulse sounds like he’s answering a question no one asked. “Gosh, Grian, I’m sorry – that was pretty insensitive. But you’ll get your wings back too.”

I hope.

Neither of them say it, but they both think it – and know the other one is thinking the same.

As they finally reach the cover of the trees, and step into its cooling shade, Grian pulls off his shoes and shakes the sand out of them. “Stupid sand,” he growls. “Stuff gets everywhere.”

“You don’t have boots yet?” Impulse raises an eyebrow. “They keep the sand out—”

“No, Impulse,” Grian doesn’t even bother keeping the irritation out of his voice. “I don’t have boots yet. Or armor, or a decent kit, or anything but bread to eat, or even a partner who’s not probably certifiably insane.” He tucks the shoes under his arm, electing to go barefoot on the soft grass, and snaps: “Where’s this pond?”

Impulse doesn’t react to his harsh tone, and the sympathy in his face makes Grian feel like he should apologize. But before he can, Impulse leads him deeper under the oaks to a small, sandy-shored pond. “There,” he says, pointing. “And good idea – think I’ll stick my feet in too.”

They sit down in the shade of a massive oak tree, and Impulse pulls off his own boots, dropping them with a clank into the grass. Stretching, he leans back and lets his now-bare feet fall into the water. “Ahhhh,” he says. “Yep. That’s exactly what I needed.”

Dipping his own toes into the clear water, Grian weaves his fingers into the grass, and gives a sigh.

“Sorry, Impulse,” he says, his voice softer against the distant sounds of birdsong and the wind rustling the leaves overhead. “I shouldn’t have snapped at you. It’s just… hard to get used to, you know? Being… grounded.”

Impulse reaches over and claps him on the shoulder. “Hey,” he says. “It’s not forever.”

“No, just until I die. Or everyone else does.” For the first time, the realization that there will only be one survivor of this game strikes him fully, and he looks over at Impulse. “Impulse… by this time next week, one or both of us could be dead. We might kill each other.”

Impulse shakes his head. “Nah…” he says, but then falls silent, any further protest dying on his lips. They both know it’s true. As peaceful as this moment is, shared in the cool quiet of the oak grove with their bare feet making ripples in the water, it can’t last.

“Might be worth it,” Grian adds suddenly, forcing his voice to be light. “Cause some chaos, go out in a blaze of glory – just to… you know. Get back.” Back to Hermitcraft. Back to the sky.

“Aw, come on, G. Don’t talk like that – you’ve got a real shot at winning this thing.”

Grian shrugs noncommittally. “Maybe,” he says.

            Sakura’s fist collided with his jaw before she had the chance to stop the impulse. Due to her strength, it threw him back a bit. Rage bubbled in her chest. She knows he wasn’t the one calling her those things but the fact that he said it straight to her face just pissed her off. I wasn’t at all helping the situation.

“Listen, I know I messed up! I came to you because I trust you, I don’t need your insensitive comments. You think I don’t know all that already?”

She snapped at him. She didn’t apologize for hitting him and she wasn’t going to. He deserved it as far as she was considered. She wrapped her arms around her middle, and took a deep breath. Stress was not at all good for the baby. She has told expecting mothers that a hundred times working at the hospital. She just… Never expected that she would be the one in that situation. At least not until the far future but here she is now.

“I shouldn’t have drank that night. I shouldn’t have let him flirt me back to his place. I don’t know what’s worse. The fact he was terrible at sex or the fact that we both decided we were bad for each other and aren’t going to be together. Which is making this whole baby thing even more complicated.”

She confided in Shikamaru because they have been getting close lately. Spending a lot of time together after work. She knew by now he wouldn’t spread around her business. She really didn’t want news about this pregnancy being out yet. It would just make the whole situation so much more stressful and she needed to get her thoughts together. She knows there would be plenty of people that would be more than happy to help her and maybe be even a little excited about the baby but she also knew there would be just as many that would talk down to her about it. Reject her and the baby just like Shikamaru said. She just wished he didn’t just immediately remind her of that fact. She wasn’t so stupid to think everyone would just be so welcoming to a single mother. The idea of someone insulting her baby made her blood boil. She only just found out about it and she was already protective of it. The baby wasn’t at fault here. It was her. She could care less what people called or thought of her. Just leave her baby alone.

“I’m keeping it regardless. As far as I’m concerned, it’s my baby. If he wants to be in it’s life, that’s up to him. I don’t care either way.” She let out another sigh, looking away with a heavy frown on her face, “I always wanted to be a parent just… I was hoping I’d be with someone that actually gave a shit about me. Be married. Guess I ruined all that. I swear that Uchiha is my own personal curse.” No one was going to be with a girl with someone else’s baby. She was on her own, and she accepted that. She was a strong woman, she knows she can handle this. She just needed to vent about it.

I didn't think Ethan was cutting MC off at all. I hope I don't sound rude but I feel like people are just finding the smallest reasons to hate on him at this point. He was staying away from his PHONE, not MC. He didn't want to do something impulsive or stupid, so he thought it would be a good idea to not check his phone, and I don't think that there is anything wrong that. It would be bad if he purposely ignored MC's texts, but he didn't even know that she texted him.

Also, Ethan and MC spent the whole night together after the bondage thing, and he was constantly checking on her that night after the sex to make sure that she was okay. He clearly was very worried about her and showed it. MC wasn't traumatized by it or anything, she was doing fine, and Ethan only let the worry go after he made sure that he was. So, I think it's really unfair for people to criticize him for not looking at his phone the next day and somehow form the conclusion that he is being insensitive to MC.

I don’t disagree with you. And I absolutely think we can get ahead of ourselves sometimes by nitpicking on the littlest things and not just appreciating the story/characterizations as whole. I even agree with your POV - maybe he was just staying away from his phone and it had nothing at all to do with MC or their feelings. 

Where we differ, though, is that I truly believe it’s selfish behaviour. Ethan was concerned about HIS reaction to having his phone available and HIS response to what would happen if he had access to it, without considering how the people he supposedly cares about might feel about all the changes that have occurred in the last 24 hours. 

And, regardless of whether or not MC was traumatized (I do agree he took care to make sure they were okay after that scene and they fell asleep on good terms) the fact is that we’re supposed to believe MC is his partner in all things. As a good partner, he should have understood that being unresponsive and detached from communication - after a particularly eventful day/night - wasn’t the best way to go about things. Also, if you read the script, MC calls him out on it, specifically referencing “everything we did together the night before”. So, to me, they DO sound a bit bothered by his lack of communication and, in my opinion, they should be. 

I can also fully accept that that may be just that -- my opinion and what I would expect in an equal and respectful partnership, but maybe not how others would feel.
