The room was dark.

From outside, yelling in the hallway.

In said hallway stood Detective Kevin MacArthur, NYPD. His partner and AVR specialist, Allison Stewart, was beside him. They both stared at the puddle forming from under the door. MacArthur scoffed, “Damn junkies.”

Steward sighed, looking at the gruff 50-something man, “It's not drugs.”

“Might as well be,” said the detective. They watched the metallic blue liquid leak into the carpet more, seeming to coat it, grass blooming from where it stuck. The detective simply stepped on it, banging on the door, “NYPD, ANYONE HOME?”

The door swung open and both were blinded by sudden light. They stepped inside, bearing witness to a landscape straight out of a fantasy world. Behind them, several officers had set up small damming devices in the hall, keeping the fluid from spreading more.

The landscape before them was gorgeous, obviously high quality. Allison gave a soft whistle, “Someone has taste at least…”

MacArthur made a condescending laugh, “Someone…,” he began, picking his words carefully, “...wanted to escape. World's too tough. Escape into this kinda stuff, right? Run away? Drugs, like I said.”

Allison rolled her eyes for probably the ninth time since she'd been put on assignment with the man. She removed a small device from her pocket, a beeping signal pinging and showing a direction. They walked along a scenic path, across a massive open field. Birds flew high in the sky, sunlight pouring over them. They passed several building as they walked, populated by creatures of various species. Cat people, dog people, several imposing dragon people.

Allison looked up at him as they walked, “So why DO you hate ReSt so much?”

He thought about the question as they passed through a small village. It had been over an hour since they walked in, in nigh total silence. He removed his hat, fanning himself in the head of the day. Giving a little shrug, he said, “It's pure escapism, Stewart. My uh… my daughter was taken by this stuff. ReSt is dangerous. Only weak people need this shit. People who can't face reality.” Allison started to speak, but was interrupted by the sounds of a fight.

The detective and Allison watched. In the middle of the village, a robust lizardman was fighting a small, lightning fast cat man. The crowd around them cheered. Allison gave another whistle, “This is REALLY good. I might look into this one.” The detective just gave a low growl in his throat.

They moved out of town soon, headed into a nearby forest, following the signal. He looked at his partner with brown, weary eyes, “What about you? Why do you LIKE this stuff so much?”

She made a low hum, thinking, before answering, “It's a nice change. Imagine it. Things we could never do, in the safety of our own home.” He would scoff at the word 'safety’. Nothing safe about it, as far as he was concerned.

The beeping became louder and more distinct as they entered a clearing. She smiled, “Found it! Just have to…” She turned a dial on the side of the device, the hum of it deepening. She raised her hands, as if feeling an invisible wall, and began to move along it. But the detective was examining something more interesting.

He was at the base of a tree, woodland animals gathered around a beautiful, seemingly sleeping young man. Long, black hair swept across a vaguely felinoid face, a long tail laying in the grass, feline ears atop his head. He was dressed in regal attire, velvet and a breastplate decked in gold colors. A sword lay in the grass next to him.

The detective made a face, kneeling down to examine a name engraved across the neckline of the cloak, “Fuckin trash, I swear. I found our… Prince Charming, Allison. Name matches.” Allison was still feeling the air, as it were. She felt her arms grow wet suddenly, pulling them away and revealing them covered in soft fur, claws on her fingertips, soft paw pads on her palms. She nodded, “Found the ReSt. One second…”

She felt along the air more, clawed fingers moving over… something. There was a click, “Gotcha!”

The fantasy fell away. Metallic blue fluid fell like a sudden shower, washing off of everything like it was water and oil. The animals were gone. The sunlight was replaced by a ceiling mounted dome light that flickered to life weakly.

Mounds of refuse were stuffed into the corners. Allison's now human arms were on the controls to a large machine taking up nearly one entire wall, a huge vat of fluid suspended from the ceiling, a broken hose drooling more of the blue liquid. A small robotic spider-like device was hanging from the hose, dried rubber on the ends of its mandibles like a strange web, inches from the hole.

Allison looked closely at it, “Hose burst. More ReSt than the settings required. Repair drone malfunctioned.”

The detective looked at where the 'prince’ had been, “Meaning?”

Allison shrugged, “Wandered for days in his own fantasy. Like you said, no real food, no real drink. Couldn't reach the console because there were layers on layers of ReSt by the time he probably realized it. Old model, too. No emergency stop. No voice command wireless unit would be compatible and the ReSt would've coated the regular command unit to uselessness."

MacArthur gave the body a small push with his foot. The kid was skin and bones, definitely dead. Dehydrated. “Just like Julia. Damn.” He frowned deeper than he had been.

A couple of hours passed. Medical crew came and went, room was quarantined off, ReSt was cleaned and sent for decontamination.

Following a grueling paperwork session, MacArthur was at home. Allison had taken care of the technical details. He slid his jacket and hat onto a hanger near the door. He sat, scratching his chin a little. He ran a hand over his face almost in worry, stopping with his hand over his mouth. He glanced across the living room of his small apartment. The door there read JULIA in bright, golden letters that glowed softly.

“Should I?” He nodded a little, as if to answer himself. He stood up, with heavy steps and shoulders heaving wearily. He reached for the knob, until he heard a voice inside. A little girl's voice, “Daddy?” His hand stopped, shaking slightly. He bit his lip.

He opened the door. Inside, a beautiful room decorated in pink, pictures of cats, in crayon, on the walls. At a small table sat a young girl, barely 7, with flowers in her blonde hair, a pair of cute cat ears poking from it. He glanced at one wall. On it was a small tank, reading 'Reality Stain’. Beneath it was a small computer and a large red switch for power. He looked away from the girl, hand moving towards it.

He could do it. He had to.

“Daddy?” He stopped. And stared at her. She had stood up from her tea party, looking at him.

“Yes… Yes Julia?”

She looked up at him, wide-eyed. He was crying, “Why are you crying, daddy?”

He sighed softly, resting a hand on her head, the same one that had been reaching for that switch, “Because… I'm a weak man, Julia.”
