VCF Southwest
This was the first time I've been able to attend a VCF, and it was the first held in the Dallas area in over a decade. I was lucky enough to participate as both event staff, helping to plan and run the show, and as an exhibitor. It was exhausting, it was overwhelming at times, and I nearly lost my voice by the end of the first day ... But it was also an incredible experience and I really enjoyed it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I brought a few of my projects to show off. First and foremost was my Wrap030-ATX project, which I paired with a Wyse WY-30 terminal I rescued from Computer Reset, and had running a demo program for printing names on my recently-repaired Apple ImageWriter II/L. Next to that was my Wrap030 board stack running a Mandelbrot fractal renderer using its 68882 FPU and video generator cards. Then came the Mac SE from Computer Reset I repaired, with my SE-VGA card driving an external monitor, and running Oregon Trail (always a crowd favorite!). Finally I had my Franken-Plus, which sadly suffered a power supply failure early on the first day and sat dark all weekend.
My exhibit was situated just down the row from @commodorez , who won the show's Best Microcomputer award for his "VICs that aren't 20" exhibit of rare and lesser-known Commodore computers. Across from Commodore-Z was Usagi Electric, who won Best in Show for his exhibit of the Centurion, a PDP-11, and his vacuum tube computer.
I had a great time talking to Commodore-Z, @ms-dos5 , Usagi Electric, Nybbles and Bytes, Macintosh Librarian, Retrotech Chris, Kevin & Michael of the Turbo 9 Team, Al Williams, and so many more wonderful people that I couldn't even begin to catch names for.
I also got to go into deep-dive discussions on very specific details about my projects with people who already knew so much more about the components and the tools that I'm using than I do. It's energizing to be around people that understand the work that goes into these projects and appreciate what I've accomplished.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The show was so much bigger than I anticipated. Including staff, volunteers, sponsors, speakers, exhibitors, and attendees, we saw nearly 900 people come through the main hall over the course of the weekend. Seminars were full, with CuriousMarc's presentation on Restoring the Apollo Guidance Computer forming an imposing line for entry well ahead of the scheduled start of the talk. We had incredible community turnout; it was great to see entire families come through with awestruck small children in tow.
There was so much to see and do, so many people to talk to. The entire weekend is just a blur. My brain is still trying to process everything from the show.
One thing does stand out though — an unbelievably generous act from someone I spoke to on Saturday about my homebrew builds and my methods for testing and debugging. This kind soul was so impressed by what I have accomplished without an oscilloscope that he bought one from the VCFSW charity auction and gave it to me on Sunday. I was so surprised I didn't think to even get his name before he disappeared into the crowd. I can't wait to put it to good use, and I hope that what I build with it lives up to his expectations.
Following VCF East earlier this year, Bil Herd said something about riding that high from VCFE, and that prompted him to agree to come out to join us at VCFSW this year. Now that I've experienced it for myself, I understand what he meant. I've been looking though all the pictures and blog posts everyone has been sharing, and catching up on recordings of the presentations I missed. Interest in some of my projects has me thinking about what I can do with them next. It's exciting.
I can't wait until next year.

Ensuring the security of your business assets and valuable personal possessions is crucial. Whether you’re a business owner seeking to protect your Business Property Insurance in Dallas or an individual with valuable assets, having the right insurance can provide peace of mind and financial protection. Kang Group Services in Dallas offers specialized insurance solutions tailored to the needs of businesses and individuals. Here’s a guide to understanding the benefits of Business Property Insurance and Valuable Articles Insurance and how Kang Group Services can help you secure your assets.
Tumblr media
Understanding Business Property Insurance
Business Property Insurance is designed to protect a company’s physical assets from unexpected damages and financial loss. This type of insurance generally covers a range of perils, including fire, theft, natural disasters, and vandalism, which could impact the functioning of a business. By securing a robust Business Property Insurance policy, Dallas business owners can rest assured that their assets are protected against unforeseen events.
Key Components of Business Property Insurance
Building and Property Coverage: This aspect of the insurance covers the physical building your business operates in, along with permanent fixtures like plumbing, lighting, and electrical systems.
Contents Coverage: Protects the essential contents within the business premises, including office equipment, furniture, inventory, and machinery that is vital to day-to-day operations.
Business Interruption Coverage: In case of a disaster, your business could face significant downtime, leading to a loss of income. Business Interruption Coverage compensates for lost revenue and helps you manage payroll, bills, and other expenses while your business is closed or recovering.
Equipment Breakdown Coverage: Mechanical failures can be costly. This coverage assists with repair or replacement costs if essential equipment such as HVAC systems, computers, or other machinery breaks down.
Crime and Vandalism Coverage: Protects against damages due to criminal activity like theft or vandalism, ensuring you don’t face high out-of-pocket costs.
Why Business Property Insurance Matters for Dallas Companies
Dallas is home to a variety of industries, from technology to retail to hospitality. Business owners in such a dynamic environment face numerous risks, and being uninsured or underinsured can lead to devastating financial losses. Business Property Insurance provides essential coverage, helping businesses mitigate the impact of unexpected damages and enabling them to recover faster after a loss.
Kang Group Services understands that every business is unique, which is why they offer customizable Business Property Insurance plans that cater specifically to Dallas businesses. Their expertise ensures that your policy aligns with the nature of your business, the assets you wish to protect, and any specific risks associated with your industry.
Exploring Valuable Articles Insurance
Valuable Articles Insurance in Dallas, also known as Personal Articles Insurance, is designed to protect personal items that are of high value. This coverage is ideal for individuals who own expensive assets like jewelry, fine art, antiques, collectibles, and other valuable items. Often, standard homeowners or renters insurance policies may not fully cover the loss or damage of high-value items, making Valuable Articles Insurance an important consideration.
Key Benefits of Valuable Articles Insurance
Comprehensive Coverage for High-Value Items: Unlike standard homeowners insurance, which has limitations on coverage for personal items, Valuable Articles Insurance provides higher limits for each item insured.
Worldwide Coverage: Many Valuable Articles policies offer global protection, allowing you to travel with your valuables knowing they are covered wherever you go.
Protection Against Various Risks: From accidental loss and damage to theft, Valuable Articles Insurance protects against a wide range of risks, ensuring you’re compensated if an item is lost, damaged, or stolen.
No Deductibles: In many cases, Valuable Articles Insurance policies don’t require a deductible, so you can receive full compensation without out-of-pocket expenses.
Why Valuable Articles Insurance is Essential for Dallas Residents
Dallas is a city where people enjoy a high quality of life, and many residents own valuable personal collections and assets. Whether it’s a family heirloom, a luxury watch, or a prized painting, having the right protection can offer peace of mind. IBM's technology building at 1000 Belleview Street in Dallas on Friday, April 19, 2024.
Tumblr media
The smallest ballot proposition for a $1.25 billion bond package Dallas voters will weigh in on starting this week is expected to help improve how the city securely stores data.
Proposition J asks Dallas voters to authorize the city to issue $5 million in general obligation bonds for information technology facilities and improvements.
In this case, all of the money would go to one building, the former IBM building on 1000 Belleview Street, where the city plans to move its data center run by the Information and Technology Services Department.
The new building would replace City Hall space used since the 1970s to store equipment and data, but city officials say it was originally designed as an office space and hasn’t been significantly updated in the last five decades.
“Basically, the $5 million bond is slated to go into the new building and do some improvements to things like ensuring the fire suppression system is up to date, the physical access is good and any physical repairs to the building that need to be addressed,” said Brian Gardner, the city’s chief technology and information security officer.
Tumblr media
Gardner said Dallas will take over ownership of the former IBM building, which is near the Jack Evans Police Headquarters, as of October.
The city since at least 2000 has been leasing IBM’s parking garage for the police department.
Tumblr media
According to the city, the lease agreement has an option to allow Dallas to buy IBM’s parking lot and building for $1 at the end of the lease term.
The term expires at the end of September.
Gardner said that of the $5 million bond money proposal, $2.25 million is planned for building upgrades, $1.2 million for an electronic system that controls physical access throughout the facility, $800,000 for a power supply that offers emergency power when the main source fails, and $750,000 for the fire alarm system.
“It will help maintain the technology infrastructure of the city,” Gardner said.
According to an August 2023 city memo, the city’s current data center has issues that includes not having a fire suppression system, not having a cooling system to meet current demands, and not having enough space to store all of the city systems that should be operating out of the data center.
“There are multiple mission critical applications/systems being operated by departments in a space that is less secure, lacks backup power, and does not have adequate climate controls,” Assistant City Manager Robert Perez wrote in the August 2023 memo to the Dallas City Council.
Perez said the city could also consider moving its 911 call center and emergency operation center to the Belleview Street building.
Tumblr media
He estimated in the memo that it would cost the city between $175 million to $325 million to build a new data center based on the needs of the IT department.
The city’s IT department was initially seeking $30 million in bond money to pay for upgrading and moving operations to the Belleview Street building, which included $16.5 million in improvements and another $4.5 million for relocation.
Dallas’ municipal government has had issues with data security and storage in recent years as well as being slow to upgrade city technology.
The city in 2021 repeatedly had issues with a system meant to alert firefighters of emergency calls while inside fire stations because all station computers weren’t upgraded from Windows 7, which came out in 2009.
A city IT employee in 2021 deleted millions of police files, which an independent review determined was likely accidental and an internal review found the department lacked clear rules on how to store data.
A ransomware attack last year took some city computers and services offline for weeks and impacted more than 30,000 people who had their addresses, Social Security numbers and other personal information exposed by the data breach.
The City Council last August approved setting aside nearly $8.6 million to pay vendors for hardware, software, incident response and consulting services in response to the ransomware attack.
The City Council also last year approved several technology upgrades meant to help boost the city’s cyber defense, including a nearly $4 million deal to get a new system that alerts the city’s IT department of possible cyber attacks.
Early voting began April 22 and ends on April 30. The election is on May 4.

City’s head of IT resigns for move to private sector
Department chief oversaw recovery from ransomware attack
Dallas’ chief information officer, who in recent years oversaw the city’s response to a ransomware attack and an employee deleting millions of electronic police records, is resigning.
Bill Zielinski has led the city’s Information and Technology Services since 2020 and is leaving the city on April 30.
Tumblr media
Brian Gardner, the city’s chief information security officer, will be the department’s interim director.
Zielinski oversees a department with a budget of around $132 million and made $225,000 a year as chief information officer, according to city salary data as of Jan. 1.
Zielinski declined to say what his next move would be, but told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday that after more than 30 years in government jobs he was moving to the private sector.
He said he had been looking for a new job for the last five or six months.
He said his departure is not linked to the exit of City Manager T.C. Broadnax, who was recently hired as Austin’s city manager.
“I had this great opportunity that came my way that, at the end of the day, given where I am in my career and where I am in my life, was just a great match. And so I said yes,” Zielinski told The News . “And so I’ll take several weeks off and then I will start a new gig in private industry.”
Broadnax in a memo to the City Council on Monday said Zielinski notified him of the resignation two weeks ago.
Broadnax credited Zielinski with overseeing upgrades to the city’s core network, 911 emergency communications and the human resources management system.
He also noted other accomplishments such as Zielinski overseeing a pilot program to address internet access gaps in Dallas, developing a program focused on making sure all city surveillance cameras are maintained and comply with privacy and data security laws, and launching a monthly report tracking city IT security, management, projects and performance metrics.
The monthly reports began in 2022 after multiple City Council members expressed concern they weren’t being briefed frequently enough on the city’s IT system.
The department has faced scrutiny under Zielinski’s leadership after several high-profile issues related to the city’s IT infrastructure, including criticism that some systems are outdated.
A city IT employee in 2021 deleted millions of police files, which an independent review later determined was likely accidental.
An internal review found the IT department lacked clear rules on how to store data.
That same year an activist group said it received hundreds of hours of mostly Dallas police aerial surveillance footage from an anonymous hacker claiming to target law enforcement data in unsecured cloud storage.
Also in 2021, the city repeatedly had issues with a system meant to alert firefighters of emergency calls while inside fire stations because not all station computers were upgraded from Windows 7.
Council member Cara Mendelsohn said she worked with Zielinski to put the monthly reports into place.
“Bill inherited a challenging department with historic underinvestment and has made substantial improvements in modernizing IT hardware, software, staff training and IT governance,” she said. “He’s learned much about how the city works and tried to improve overall processes.”
A ransomware attack in 2023 took some city computers and services offline for weeks and impacted more than 30,000 people whose addresses, Social Security numbers and other personal information were exposed in the data breach.
Broadnax and other city officials have said they believed the impact from the attack could have been worse.
“Obviously you don’t want to be attacked,” Zielinski told The News on Tuesday. “But in terms of our preparation and our planning and our response to that, I’m very proud of the team here for the work that they did.”
In response to the ransomware attack, city officials have put more of a focus on addressing digital vulnerabilities and preventing future attacks, Zielinski said.
The City Council last August approved setting aside nearly $8.6 million to pay vendors for hardware, software, incident response and consulting services in response to the ransomware attack.
The City Council also last year approved several technology upgrades meant to help boost the city’s cyber defense, including a nearly $4 million deal to get a new system that alerts the city’s IT department of possible cyberattacks.
Zielinski said Dallas was continuing work to modernize and improve its IT system and mentioned the city’s plans for a new city data center at a former IBM building near the police headquarters that the city is buying for $1.
“There’s nothing pushing me to leave. The city has been extremely supportive both from city management through to the council,” Zielinski said.
“I’m nothing but pleased with the support that the city has provided to me here in this role and to the IT organization, and I expect and I hope to continue to see that kind of support here in the organization.”
$5M proposed for IT facility upgrades
City to move data center out of current subpar space into refurbished ex-IBM building The smallest ballot proposition for a $1.25 billion bond package Dallas voters will weigh in on starting this week is expected to help improve how the city securely stores data.

There isn’t much about information technology that’s flashy, but it’s one of the most important parts of any organization, and especially city government, with functions like 911 and 311 that are critical to public health and safety.
Dallas needs a great leader for its IT department to keep things running smoothly and to prevent disasters.
With Chief Information Officer Bill Zielinski’s departure earlier this week, the city must find a successor with the skills to lead Dallas forward.
Brian Gardner, the city’s chief information security officer, will be the department’s interim director.
Whether Gardner is the best choice for the permanent position, we can’t say.
But he should compete with the best an open market can offer.
This selection process must include a genuine comprehensive search.
A ransomware attack last year proved how important good IT management is when it affected police, courts, 311 and multiple city websites.
The deletion of millions of police files in 2021 did the same.
Inefficiencies and under-investment have left the city with a backlog of projects to address, and Dallas needs someone who can handle it.
There are over 100 approved projects in the IT pipeline, according to the March Technology Accountability Report, at a cost of around $396 million.
Among the most critical is a new fire station alert system.
The city has known about the problems with the existing one at least since 2021, according to a city memo, and they’re serious.
The outdated system hadn’t been well maintained and was experiencing delays.
A fix is in the works, expected to be complete by October, according to the March technology report.
But three years is far too long when we’re talking about a system needed for saving lives.
Other important projects include an electronic citation system for the Code Compliance Department and a new system to improve the permitting process labeled DallasNow, according to the March report.
It’s not as if the city is doing nothing.
There is $5 million in proposed borrowing in the 2024 Dallas bond for the city to upgrade its data center.
A plan to deal with a “debt” of inadequate systems has also been developed.
But managing the city’s exploding IT needs has to be top priority in every budget cycle.
We understand that Dallas has many needs, but getting technology right affects every part of how City Hall operates.
The city has an interim city manager right now.
Ideally, that job would be filled with the right person before placing a new IT director, assuming Gardner can handle the job in the interim.
The important thing is to get this right, not to get it done right away.

DIY legendary op-amp Big Muff
Tumblr media
Welcome to my guitar effects workshop! Today, we will study the circuit and history of the pedal, which is copied and improved by dozens, if not hundreds of companies and masters. And, of course, we will build and listen to our own copy.
Almost every audio signal processing effect in electric guitar music and analog synthesis was born from faulty equipment or setup.
Tumblr media
I believe the fuzz effect's history began the same day the history of rock 'n' roll began. In 1951, five years before he met his future wife and vocalist Tina, Ike Turner, founder of The Kings Of Rhythm, recorded a song named after an Oldsmobile 88.
Tumblr media
More precisely, in honor of the innovative Rocket 88 engine installed on this luxurious, stylish muscle car.
Tumblr media
Before recording, the Fender Bassman amplifier Ike was using was dropped, and a tube exploded.
Tumblr media
So, instead of a pure bluesy guitar sound, the buzzing sound of the future came out of the speakers. The ensemble played rhythm and blues, but rock and roll sounded.
Tumblr media
In 1961, virtuoso session musician and unusual guitar enthusiast Grady Martin recorded the bass solo for Marty Robbins's song Don't Worry through the channel of a tube mixing console that turned out to be faulty. However, not only did this not spoil the solo, which was left on the record and made it onto vinyl, but it was the beginning of a new guitar sound.
Tumblr media
To repeat this sound, Orville "Red" Rhodes, known for his iconic Velvet Hamer pickups, created the first custom effect in a box plugged between the guitar and the amp input. Pedal-style effect boxes were invented later.
Tumblr media
In 1962, the great Nokie Edwards, whom the Japanese call the King of Guitars, specifically used the fuzz "box" for the first time, the very one created by Red Rhodes, when recording a guitar riff. It was the single The 2000 Pound Bee by The Ventures.
Tumblr media
Be sure to listen to this masterpiece song. The fuzz gives the composition a unique space. Each note of the guitar flashes like a firework spark.
Tumblr media
Next up. Who hasn't heard (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones? In this song, Keith Richards used the first commercial Gibson/Norlin Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone, released already in a pedal body.
Tumblr media
And the much more famous smiling, round-faced Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face is, of course, associated with Jimi Hendrix, the virtuoso who took the art of electric guitar playing to a whole new level.
Tumblr media
And finally, David Gilmour used the Electro Harmonix Big Muff in his masterpiece solo Comfortably Numb. This is the very pedal we are going to study and assemble today.
But first things first.
Tumblr media
In 1967, Mike Matthews, a young IBM computer sales manager, electronic engineer, and musician and producer who had worked with Chuck Berry, among others, was impressed by the song Satisfaction, played on the radio even more often than it is now. The demand for fuzz pedals was great, and they were assembled in New York City by a single music equipment repair engineer, William Berko, in his shop, ABCO Sound, on 48th Street, in single copies.
Tumblr media
Bill suggested that Mike work together, and every couple of weeks, they handed Alfred Dronge, the founder of Guild Guitar Company, a few hundred assembled pedals that went by the name Foxey Lady.
Tumblr media
These were Mosrite Fuzzrite pedals based on the Gibson Fuzz-Tone circuit. It differs from Fuzz Face in that the second knob does not control negative feedback, i.e., gain. Still, it is a crossfader between the signals from the first and second transistors.
Tumblr media
In other words, the knob mixes the amplified clean signal of the guitar with the distorted signal after limiting. It allows the musician to find the right balance between them. Another iconic pedal, the Klon Centaur, works similarly.
Tumblr media
Note that the first transistor is a buffer in the original Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone. It is included in the emitter follower circuit and completely repeats the shape and voltage of the input signal. The foot switch short-circuits the output of the distorted signal.
This is simple, effective, and guaranteed to eliminate distortion of the clean signal. Still, the entire voltage gain becomes the task of a single Q2 transistor, which, for this reason, must have a high gain. In the 1960s, such transistors had to be carefully selected from many (as boutique pedal builders still do).
Instead, the Mosrite Fuzzrite uses the first transistor in a common emitter circuit, which gives voltage gain and reduces the second transistor requirements but distorts the buffered signal.
Tumblr media
In 1968, Mike Matthews released his first guitar gear, LPB-1 Linear Power Booster, under his brand, Electro-Harmonix. The founder of the company was 26 years old at the time.
Tumblr media
The developer of the LPB-1 was the brilliant inventor Robert Myer, who worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories. And the purpose of this silver box was not to overdrive an amplifier. Back then, guitar amps had a big headroom for clean, loud sound, and the concept of overdrive didn't exist yet, although there was fuzz.
The Linear Power Booster allowed you a long, sustained tone by amplifying the weak signal of the then-current pickups. And prolongated sustain was especially demanded from electric guitars.
An acoustic guitar cannot have a long sustain because it gives the energy of string vibrations to the air. That's how it works. But an electric guitar, especially a solid-body guitar like the Fender Stratocaster and even more so a Gibson Les Paul with a glued-in neck, gives only a signal to the amplifier through the pickups. That's why a note can sound much longer, especially if the signal is processed properly.
Tumblr media
The second EHX product was the Muff Fuzz. Still not a pedal, in the same box as the LPB-1 Booster Sustainer, same one switch and one knob, only with an output socket instead of an output jack on the body.
Tumblr media
Today, this device is available as a pedal, called EHX Muff Overdrive Nano. Then, the circuit is a Fuzz Face without a distortion control potentiometer but with added limiting diodes. So, in sound terms, it's more of an overdrive than a fuzz.
Tumblr media
Muff Fuzz version on operational amplifiers is also produced. Here, we can immediately see that this is a pure overdrive, with only the name of the fuzz.
Tumblr media
What if the developer combines the Sustaining and Overdrive effects, LPB-1 and Muff Fuzz, into one pedal? That is, create a pedal with three-stage gain and diode limiting on the third stage?
Tumblr media
That would be the Big Muff. Like the Muff Fuzz, it exists in transistorized and op-amp versions. I will build the op-amp version from a DIY kit from Landtone.
Tumblr media
I really like DIY kits from this company, but today, they missed the hole placement. The jack plane should be almost adjacent to the top wall of the case; otherwise, you can't install the PCB. Here, it is offset in height by more than 3 mm.
Tumblr media
The holes are drilled the way they should be on the blue pedal, but on the silver pedal, the holes are offset.
Tumblr media
I had to work with a drill and a file.
Tumblr media
In the end, the board fit into the case, but it was ugly. I can't gift or sell such a pedal. (You can, of course, fill the extra part of the hole with a "cold welding" type compound, then sand it down, but it's a lot of work with no guarantee that the compound won't fall off).
Therefore, it is more reliable to buy kits where the holes are not drilled and drill them yourself. Out of 7 Landtone kits, I found offset holes only in two, and such a significant offset, which does not allow the installation of the PCB, only in one of these cases.
And now you can hear what the fantastic Big Muff fuzz distortion sounds like, with its really great sustained tone, as well as watch the pedal's assembly process.
youtube
The EHX Big Muff and its many versions, clones, and mods today continue to lead the way among the most beloved and sought-after pedals among guitarists and bassists of all styles, from metal to ambient.
Tumblr media
Thanks for your attention! I'm going to build the kit from the last photo. On its PCB, there is space for two dual op-amps, while Big Muff has one dual op-amp and the second one single. That's why the next project promises to be no less, even more interesting.

Excel non può aprire il file? Ecco perché e come risolverlo?
Tumblr media
Potrebbero avere dati mancanti o illeggibili.
Passaggi da utilizzare Passaggio 1: Open any Excel file and click on the File button at the top left corner of the screen. Now select Open > Computer > Browse options. Apri qualsiasi file Excel e fai clic sul pulsante File nell'angolo in alto a sinistra dello schermo. Ora seleziona Apri > Computer > Sfoglia opzioni.
Tumblr media
Ecco perché e come risolverlo?.
