“#fillyourcupfriday Every week, picture yourself starting with a cup of water. This represents your intensity, your motivation, your overall preparedness and mental "currency".
Every hard workout you have, every time you need to grit your teeth and push through, you pour a little out. Every time you put in a heavy, heavy lift, or gut through a big set, you pour a little out. Every time you don't get enough sleep, pour a little out. Every time you miss a meal, pour a little out. Every stress at work, pour some out. Every fight with your spouse, pour some out. Every time you get angry at the news or the internet, pour some out.
Every time you read a book, fill it up a little bit. Every time you pet your dog, get enough sleep, have a good meal, take a hot shower, get a massage, go for an evening walk, meditate, indulge in one of the hobbies you enjoy, fill it up a bit.
The cup is finite. You can keep pouring and pouring, but eventually, it'll run empty. And then there's nothing left when you need it. Focus on filling it up as much as you focus on emptying it, or you'll hit a wall, and hit it hard- most of us have been there. For many of us engaged in high-intensity sports or hobbies, training is often tough and draining- we need active recovery and easy work on the weekends BECAUSE those fill the cup back up, they don't empty it. Hit these too hard, and you're pouring water out, not adding any back in. Remember that when you think about your low-intensity work- if you skip it, you're missing a chance to add more to your cup.
When you have something big coming up, like an event, or a known stressor, the week leading up, you want to be filling that cup to the brim, not draining it so you can feel as though you're getting that "last bit of work" in. Dealing with big stressors are hard enough as is, with enough drains on your resources. Find productive things you can do in life that add energy back, and you'll be a better athlete, and human because of it.
