How to Choose the Right Chokes to Shoot Clay Targets When Attending a Clay Shooting Session?

Clay shooting is one of the most popular sports worldwide. Using both your physical and cognitive powers, these sporting activities can help you improve both your body and mind. But you should ensure that you’re following the right steps to shoot clay targets.

Clay pigeon shooting is not rocket science. But there’re a lot of things you need to consider when attending a clay shooting session. One of them is using the right instruments but that isn’t only limited to the firearms. You should also get the right chokes for your clay pigeon shooting session. For first-time shooters at the shooting range, it’s normal to feel confused about finding the right adjustable chokes for their shotguns.

But well, it’s easy, as the choke depends on the shooting method of the shooters and factors like the distance of the clay target, type of ammo and the discipline of clay pigeon shooting practised there. Let’s get into more detail in the following blog post.

So, what are the adjustable chokes to shoot clay targets?

These days, most shotguns, including the ones used in clay target shooting come with barrels and adjustable chokes. They allow you to modify the narrowing of the barrel near the ‘muzzle’ of the gun and help you pass from the full choke to the cylinder to shoot clay targets, up to skeets easily.

These barrels are born cylindrical tubes. Although some are ‘back-bored’ or ‘tri-bored.’ They have a thread in the internal part at the terminal phase with a movable choke screwed. Thus, you can choose between the different degrees of narrowing to shoot clay targets as per your needs.

How to choose the right chokes to shoot clay targets in the shooting range?

As we discussed before choosing the right choke is simple, as it’s linked to the activities, you’ll practice to shoot clay targets.

Here’re a few tips from experts to find the right chokes for clay pigeon shooting,

1. For Olympic Pit:

For the Olympic discipline of clay shooting, the target is already engaged at a 25-meter distance. Well, it’s logical for those who use an aiming style and don’t shoot as soon as the target reveals. They use maximum chokes ‘improved modified’ and ‘full choke’ in the 2nd barrel.

These chokes allow the shot to resist the friction with the air and travel greater distances but with the right speed and dynamic release to shoot clay targets.

2. For Compak and Skeet:

Are you dedicated to skeet? Well, in that case, you must make the appropriate distinctions based on the specialities you practise. It’s a must to have a shotgun dedicated to the specialty to change the folds, settings and range.

For both pure skeet and hunting courses (i.e., Compak) that take place on the shooting platform, more or less long barrels with slightly wider chokes are the best. You must choose either ‘cylinder modified/improved modified’ or ‘cylinder modified’/modified.’

3. For Double Trap:

During the double trap shooting, the shooter has to hit 2 targets at the same time. Hence, it’s a must for them to have a slightly more generous pattern than the 1st barrel (‘modified’ will be the right chokes for clay bird shooting). Then you must immediately focus on the 2nd target with the 2nd barrel with ‘full choke.’

However, you can also opt for an ‘improved modified’ choke based on your shooting speed for double trap shooting.

4. For Clay Sporting:

On the other hand, clay sporting needs short barrels and ‘skeet’ chokes, a trumpet in the 1st barrel and ‘modified’ or ‘cylinder modified’ chokes in the 2nd barrel.

Lo scorso 9 agosto il carabinieriha fatto suo il titolo di “Atleta dell’anno” conquistato nella terza categoria dei campionati nazionali di tiro al volo, disciplina compak sporting, a Foligno. “Complimenti al nostro giovane concittadino Antonio Pannella, appuntato scelto dei carabinieri, per l’ottimo risultato raggiunto. A lui l’apprezzamento mio, dell’amministrazione comunale e della nostra comunità e l’augurio di ottenere sempre nuove soddisfazioni”. Proprio nel giorno del suo compleanno, Antonio Pannella ha ricevuto dalle mani del primo cittadino una targa e un attestato di riconoscimento, che come recita la motivazione, “per l’impegno e la dedizione  che profonde nella pratica sportiva, portando lustro all’Arma dei carabinieri e alla città di Cori”. szóval megvan annak a maga oka, hogy miért nem ilyen pump-action (Miklós kedvéért: előágyszán-ismétlő) sörétessel mennek agyagra a sportlövők. Nem, mintha ezt nem tudtam volna, de gondoltam csak kiviszem a saját puskámat a páyára és kipróbálom, szerencsére most végig egyedül voltam, úgyhogy más sportolóknak a rendes, bock rendszerű trap puskájukkal nem kellett arra várni, hogy én csattogtatom a punpát. Ezzel nyilván nem lehet ráismételni értelmesen a madárra (mint a kétcsövűvel vagy egy öntöltővel) úgyhogy minden madár előtt, patron be, pumpa föl, madár, bumm, pumpa le. Meg az ilyennel (Az NZCTA szabályok szerint) nem lehet úgy átmenni másik állásra, hogy van benne lőszer, úgyhogy ha az ember mégis tartana egy második patront a tárban, akkor is üríteni kéne a fegyvert minden alkalommal amikor a következő állásba megy, ami extra felesleges macera. További hátrány, hogy amikor a puska kidobja a kilőtt hüvelyt, akkor az oda megy, ahova akar és utána össze kell szedni kézzel, más lövő rálép, elesik, stb. felesleges baszmogás. 

Na mindegy, így, hogy egyedül voltam, nem volt gáz. Ja, meg időnként a gép azt hiszi, hogy call van, amikor bezárom a fegyvert, és elpattint egy korongot, a mikrofon nem tesz különbséget, hogy mit kiabál az ember, ha azt kiáltod CAMAAAAAARG, akkor is dob, meg, ha kicsit erősebben csattintja be a puskát a kéz, akkor is. Nem tragédia, csak még egy dologra oda kell figyelni, pont amikor koncentrálni akar az ember.

Igy sem kisebb móka, persze, de azért jobban érti az ember, hogy egy párszáz dolláros shotgun és egy Miroku vagy Beretta 2-5000+ dolláros ára között mi a különbség. Főleg az, hogy ez a Mossberg nem erre való :) úgyhogy most a bal vállamat érzem, mert ennek a fegyvernek semmiféle egyensúlya nincsen, szemben a gondosan megtervezett, méretre igazított O/U-ekkel szemben, amikkel - ha okosan választ lőszert az ember - egész nap lehet aprítani. Ezt viszont nem sajnálja az dolgozó kivinni a mocsárba kacsát lőni. Kis gyakorlással ezzel is lehet szépen korongozni, de azért az olimpián nem véletlenül nem ilyennel indulnak.
