"commieblocks" aren't even that special to socialism they were built like any other European social housing was built in the second half of the 20th century. have you ever seen France? the UK? be serious

Thinking about how 70 years of forced collectivism, the destruction of the villages and rapid mass urbanization did an absolute number on how Russians (and other ex-Soviets) view their neighbors.
One of the first things people did after the fall of the regime was install thick metal doors and stop hanging out together. People atomized even more than they already did. You'd be lucky to know the people living on the same floor of your commieblock, forget about hanging out with the whole house. Mothers stopped letting kids outside unsupervised. Clubs withered away. Russians fucking speedran all the urban social processes of the 20th century and, in a true Russian fashion, did them harder.
Small wonder any kind of a strong opposition to the regime could never form. People stopped even pretending they trust and like each other.

WHAT WE HAD UNDER SOVIETS BUT LOST
1. FOAM PLASTIC WAS MADE OUT OF MILK CREAM. YOU COULD EVEN FEED CHILDREN WITH IT.
2. GRAVITY WAS 80% WEAKER. PEOPLE COULD TAKE A RUNNING JUMP AND LAND ON A COMMIEBLOCK.
3. PEOPLE LIVED 150-190 YEARS ON THE AVERAGE. THERE WERE NO DISEASES BUT BLISTERS FROM HARD WORK.
4. IF YOU STUMBLED WALKING DOWN THE STREET AND FELL, PASSERS-BY WOULD RUSH TO YOU, PUT MONEY INTO YOUR POCKETS, KISS YOUR LIPS, OFFER THIER VODKA AND SOON AFTER YOU BECOME BROTHERS.
5. HARES AND GROUSES WOULD JUMP RIGHT INTO OVENS BY THEMSELVES. IF YOU WENT FOR GROCERIES, THE CASHIER WOULD PAY YOU MONEY. IT WAS SCARY TO WALK NEAR RIVERS: FISH WOULD JUMP OUT AND ASK TO BE EATEN IN LOUD VOICE.
6. MY GRANDPA TOLD ME THAT PEOPLE USED TO WAKE UP AT NIGHT FROM HAPPY LAUGHTER. IN THE MORNING, EVERYONE WASHED WITH ICY WATER FROM IRON BUCKETS TO BE HEALTHY!
7. PREGNANCY WOULD LAST FOR 4,5 MONTHS. BABIES WEIGHTED 12-15 KILOS, ALL HAD BLOND HAIR, BRIGHT SKY-BLUE EYES AND WILLFUL SMART FACES - THEY IMMEDIATLY ASKED TO BE SENT TO A FACTORY TO WORK.
8. VOLGA WATER WAS AS SWEET AS HONEY AND YENISEY WAS FLOWING DARK ALE.
9. IT HAD BEEN -300 CELCIUS IN WINTER, EVERYONE WAS RUDDY-CHEEKED.
10. BERRIES WERE AS LARGE AS A CAT, CATS WERE THE SIZE OF A DOG, DOGS WERE AS LARGE AS COWS, COWS LOOMED OVER FACTORY BUILDINGS, INSIDE THE FACTORIES WORKERS PLAYED CHESS USING BOTVINNIK'S METHOD - CHECK AND MATE WITH KNIGHT IN ONE TURN!

The suburbs are bad for me because there isnt much visible urban decay here. I should be living in one of the commieblock neighborhoods

I've noticed that whenever I argue about city planning with someone who has suburban brainrot they inevitably whip out some variation of "I don't want depressive commieblocks" arguments and show me a photo of some Siberian industrial hellhole in the middle of winter to illustrate their point. Thought I'd go outside and take some photos to show how "commieblocks" look when you don't go out of your way to the most depressing part of Russia to prove your point
Minsk, Belarus, literally 5 minutes away from a factory, sports centre, 3 schools, 2 kindergartens, a hospital, a dentist, a clinic, 4 bus stops, and only god knows how many grocery shops and fastfood joints.
There's a lot of things to criticize soviets for, but city planning is not one of those things. I don't think it's physically possible to live anywhere in a post-sovirt city and not be within 15 minute walk of everything you need in your day to day live.

I remember one time talking in some discord about how cool in would be to get an eastern european inspired world for ts4 because of commieblocks and kiosks and stuff, and how ppl told me no one needs this / eaxis ain't gonna make it because it's not “trendy” enough or w/e. and man. the thing I don't understand is like why on every livestream dedicated to new packs they always talk about how much they care about every laptop's performance and how it's the reason they always give us half-assed worlds, yet they can't make the most out of each lot. like, yes for attached homes! yes for cramped neighborhoods!! I don't need a whole-ass 50x40 lot for my single family, I need people around, and their noises and their shenanigans. I'm so tired of this white picket fence bs. even the apartment system we had in ts2 was way cooler than whatever tf that is. sorry for the rant. x
no yeah you're absolutely correct for this

While Beijing is undeniably a megacity, and admittedly the infrastructure that supports it is really nothing short of incredible, the weird thing is that the architecture (barring of course things like the Forbidden City and 1000 year old temples) is so boring.
While there are plenty of large towers and skyscrapers, especially in the wealthier parts of town, they're almost all uniformly bland. They might be impressive from an engineering standpoint, I wouldn't know, but they're just rectangles. In New York or Chicago there's also a glut of tall rectangular buildings but there's usually some kind of design flair to give each a bit of individuality.
And that's not even touching on the kinds of buildings most people live in, which are either concrete 5-1s or towering and identical commieblocks.

Westerners fetishising our shitty commieblocks has went so far that our young people, who got the luxury of never having to live in them, are ingesting that fetishisation via internet osmosis.
