really enjoying the geten + mla posting, when I read their arc they were very nothing burger to me but I love seeing ur thoughts

they honestly ARE pretty nothingburger-- curious had a thematically satisfying fight with toga but i feel she wouldve been a better one to keep around than, say, trumpet (sorry trumpet) but thats because as story constructs they have very specific roles and i think its fine! id like to know more esp about geten bc he ended up tied to the todorokis but i think they serve their purpose

however comma they do bring very interesting ideas to the table. actually for a very long time i deeply disliked geten for the whole. you know. darwinism thing. but after his last appearance i was like now hold on. hollllld on. this is very different from endeavors flavor of power obsession lets reassess this situation.

and his backstory is just really sad to me like we knew he hadnt gone to school because of his training but theres something about how sentimental and sympathetic he is when discussing it in 387 that it kinda clicks that hes a man (or boy) that has literally nothing other than his quirk and is not basing it on a hatred of weakness but rather on a desire to have a society that eliminates the seemingly arbitrary systems that resulted in his situation in the first place, and then you start thing about the OTHER implications, like okay, wait, schoochildren in japan start school at six. this means redestro came into possession of geten before he was six years old

hes also deeply aware of the condition of his family line and how he got there. to me, this reads not as him REMEMBERING these things, but rather him having been TOLD these things, likely by redestro. (which i could go on about and the name geten itself but) and its like, okay, well why would redestro tell him that? and you go, okay, hes never been to school, he knows redestro only as his benefactor and savior, he has no job, his family is not in his life, and you go

now hold on,

this child was isolated and used solely for his quirk, and says that without it, life has no other value-- because his life, in terms of assets or social capital, quite literally does not, a fact he is very aware of because of the man who benefits from him training his quirk

im not gonna get into the meta about each member of the mla and how they discuss liberation its long but either way, after hearing geten talk about the himuras and how peoples hearts need to change to accept the changing landscape of abilities (with the himuras bigotry contributing to their downfall), its like, oh my god, he thinks hes making a MERITOCRACY. which is very different from authoritarianism. which is not to say that his ideas are all coming from a good place like hes noted to be more than willing to commit friendly fire for the goal like if its not a "strong protect the weak" situation it is simply that "everyone has the opportunity to become strong and if they dont thats their own fault". its a ridiculously childish view of the world and entirely restricted to a narrow world view that was cultivated by the person who has complete control over his life and again, benefits directly from his disregard for human life and active willingness to kill en masse. woah!

and that? thats a little compelling thats interesting and i think the fact that like, hes clearly the victim of cult brainwashing makes him much more sympathetic and makes me want to see him have a chance at a life with some dignity howeverrrrr that does not dismiss the godawful ideologies hes internalized and the conclusions hes made about the world, which originate from a bizarre insular lifestyle and ergo are really interesting to explore.

also he really does remind me of the kinds of autistic dudes that are super into history and military strategy and like theyre not terrible people or anything but they do sometimes make explosives in their basement. i was friends w those guys in hs and in community college i think theyre interesting

Quiet Time 3/16

What am I feeling today?

I feel that I’m getting better health wise, I’m not that congested anymore and I can speak again so that’s great! I’ve been excused from the past three days of work and school and there are some things that I won’t have to make up which I’m really grateful for! Although, it could just be because I was sick and just away and isolated from everyone for a bit but I’m just feeling kinda numb. I’ve spent way too many hours in bed, on my phone, watching tv, etc and I just feel awful about it because I wasn’t being productive. Even though I know everyone is telling me to rest, I just can’t, like I can’t allow myself to fully rest.

Bible Plan: Spiritual Wilderness

Israel left Egypt, which was their place of deliverance, but the promised land they were heading for was their place of dominion. In between Egypt and the promised land was a dry desert. The period between deliverance and dominion is usually marked by a miserable wilderness.

Elijah went through a wilderness as well as the apostle Paul (1 Kings 19:1-9; Galatians 1:17-18). Even our Lord Jesus “was led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil” (Matthew 4:1) after being filled with the Holy Spirit.

The wilderness experience is a tough time in which we endure spiritual afflictions. Often, it’s a time when temptation intensifies; there might be spiritual attacks on our soul. This is a time that may also involve a spiritual drought when we feel disconnected from God.

A spiritual wilderness is not a sign that we are in sin although sometimes it feels like that. Instead of looking for God, we tend to look for some sin that can be blamed for our current experience. If you are going through a spiritual wilderness right now, remember you are not alone. The Holy Spirit is with you right now.

God is with you in the wilderness even when you don’t feel Him.

I understand that this is something that is common and it’s talked about. We go from baptism and then it’s like we’re thrown into the desert and we’re tested and it’s a hard path to walk. I don’t feel like this all the time, there are some times when I’m all fired up and ready to go! But then I have my periods of drought, where I feel absolutely numb, and I don’t want to go on in life because I’ve just gotten so tired and beat down.

I want to be able to strike a balance here. I understand that God is with me during both of these times and the desert can be necessary! It’s just hard, and I think I lack a strong will sometimes. But I can also think I’ve persevered thus far and I’m still here, what’s stopping from going further?

Psalms 24:1-6 NIV

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. They will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God their Savior. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, God of Jacob.”

The instruction of those who may stand in the holy place before God are those who are of pure heart, clean hands, and that do not have idols. From this section, what I’ve been struggling with is idolatry and I don’t want that to be true. I can be quite selfish and put myself first. I can also get obsessed and allow it to consume me, like an addiction really, I just need to get my next fix and constantly craving whatever more I can get. That’s a problem, that’s something I want to change, because I know, in the end, it doesn’t truly leave me satisfied, nothing does or will except for God.

Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.””

The Great Commission!! This is something I’ve had memorized for years yet I hadn’t began putting it into practice til a few months ago. I mean, this is literally some of Jesus last words to us and a command that he has given all of us! I mean come on! How much more important can this be?? I need to get better with this though, I can have a hard time sharing my faith and catching up with people that I have shared with before. I should check up and not give up just because it didn’t work out the first time.

Isaiah 43:1-4 NIV

“But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. We’re His🥹 this just hits hard for me, like God is with us, we’re precious to Him, He loves us🥹 like this is just something that I’ve always had a hard time wrapping my head around but He’s like literally our Father and we should treat Him as such. I think about how much I love my dad and how I try to spend time with him even when it’s inconvenient for me and I need to give God and even higher treatment than that! I mean it’s just!!! He just!!! He loves us!!!🥹🥹

Deuteronomy 2:7 NIV

“The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.”

I could honestly cry right now because!!! God is just so good, even when I’m struggling, even when I’m having a hard time, even when all I want to do is just give up, God is always there. I may not be aware of it all the time but He is, He’s watching over me and He’s with me and what more could I possibly ask for?

So my initial response is like... Yes of course, this is a staple.

HOWEVER COMMA

This will be delving lightly into some backstory/ new canon things that I haven't posted yet.

So, Felix is a very angsty guy who harbors a lot of frustration and rage in his heart. He is fuled by spite, and is motivated by the situations where he might get to throw hands. This we know. He has ALSO been known to be a chronic over-user of his powers. He's got a pretty dang op superpower, and he likes to fight. It's a bad combination and he's gotten in FAIR amounts of trouble for being violent and unpredictable.

Circling back to the question, while I think Felix could get away with playfully pinning Charlie down, and he would have had absolutely no problem doing that to someone before he met Charlie, and he'd almost certainly have no problem still doing that to someone who wasn't Charlie... I think it would make him really uncomfortable to do that to her. BUT I also think that he's not good about thinking things through before he does them, so he would probably do it and then have a bit of a panic about it.

Charlie's influence on him has like, fundamentally changed parts of him. For the first time in his life he has a clean-slate with someone. She doesn't really know what he's done, she doesn't make him feel like he has to prove anything, and she doesn't look at him like he's a monstrous science experiment. He really wants to keep it that way.

I would say that until he met Charlie he would have said that he wasn't afraid of anything because he knows that no matter what he'll always be the strongest (ie the best) person in the room. But once they became friends, I do think that he became absolutely terrified of scaring her, of her learning about everything he's done and realizing that he's not a good person. Which also sort of puts Charlie on this like savior pedestal in his mind which is fun and lightly problematic I'd say.

... He's very morally gray and he's got a lot of stuff to work through. I think that's why I like him/ this dynamic so much.

TLDR:

I like bits of this but am still largely frustrated by it. This is essentially the moment my main canon becomes Mystery and Shadow

“There is a moment, in the unluckiest of lives, where we, broken upon the tile, show the quality inside of us.”

Rei crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes at Michiru. "Some... moment, some thing will happen, and you will show, what? Nobility? Self sacrifice? Love?"

"No, I rather think not," Michiru tossed her hair casually, looking down at the streets below,  "A glass can only spill what it contains. Some grand moment will fall upon us all, and I shall shatter, empty. But rest assured,” a flick of her eyebrows, “Shatter I shall, and you as well. We are born to die, never forget that.” 

“No,” Rei shook her head, “Usagi won’t let that happen. You--”

A wind of salt and jasmine whirled by Rei’s face as Michiru suddenly unsheathed her dagger and turned hard, its point nearly meeting at Minako’s throat.

“You’re so good at rallying the troops, Neppy,” She pushed the dagger to the side with a smile, “why don’t I make you head of Morale Operations?” 

“Commander Venus.” She lowered the blade. “Should we survive the altercation, I would be delighted to play some sort of, jig,” she empahasized the comma with the shealth of the knife, “or some such.” 

Minako looked out beyond the small patch of Tokyo in front of them, out toward the harbor where dark clouds gathered as if they knew the time and date. As if they had decided this battle must take on a literary quality, the only gift the world could give to its anonymous saviors. She expected the thunder any moment now. 

“Are you going to kill Galaxia?” Rei’s voice was firm even as it vibrated like the string of her bow. 

Minako touched the hilt of her sword on her back. “Unless your aim is particularly good today. Remember that, Mars. No quarter given or expected. No trophies. No mistakes.” 

Rei just continued to stare at Minako, all the arguments and all the things she wanted to say coming to the one truth: Usagi did not want to kill Galaxia. Usagi, was the princess, and that should matter. But Rei was between beloved enemies here, neither of which would hear Usagi’s reasons now, both of which had cast her hope and her optimism and her love into the sea, bound with a chain in a box called “naïveté.” 

And they were right do so. She felt the flutter and scream of another Rei inside her head as she admitted as much, if only to herself. 

3 months. It had been three months since they last met with Galaxia, since, with great pain and anguish, they had defeated her, and since Usagi had kissed her forehead, wiped her tears, and told her to go forth and sin no more. 

Rei and Mina had argued bitterly that night. Her bed had not smelled of peaches since. 

“I--” 

Rei fell to her knees, suddenly, a strike hitting her, but nothing like lightning, though twice as violent, no this was a bomb strike, this was tactical, this was streets strewn with rubble and with bodies, this was the drone of a plane overhead. Images came to the surface of her mind and popped, her thoughts at a rolling boil. Who could keep track of them all? Haruka died, and then rocked a byb in her arms. Ami lost an eye, and then she was dead, and then she was taking a bronze award from European hands. The world went black, and Galaxia cackled, and then she disappeared, and then Tokyo came to light, and then it sank under the sea, and all of these things were true, all of these things were lies. 

The only thing that made sense in any of it, the only thing that screamed loud enough to be heard over it all, was this:

The End. 

“Mars.” Mina was knelt next her to her, a hand held out, but no touch between them, even as Rei could feel the burning magnetism of wanting to go to her. “What is it?” 

“It is the end of all things.” Michiru offered a mirthless laugh, “I have seen it many times myself. It draws near, and strong, and so the fire comes to you, not you to it. Whatever the answer here, it will be the final one.” 

Rei pushed herself to her feet, ignoring Mina’s hand. 

“What did you see?” Mina stood up next to her. “What happens here?” 

“I d--” Her eyes flicked to Michiru. No. Seers like Michiru didn’t know. They Saw too much, too far in advance. It was a guessing system at best, it was Rei who saw the attacks, Rei who saw from where they would approach. It was Rei who steered this ship at Mina and Usagi’s side. Rei knew. She always knew. It wasn’t about possibilities, it was about certainties. 

Rei had never struggled to be certain. 

She grabbed the zippo and flicked it open, the flame appearing in one quick movement. Rei stared into it, and let it stare into her. Something. She needed something. Something to give Mina, something to know. Something for Usagi, maybe. She focused on the approach, on the harbor, on the flame inside for her. It came. It sparked. 

Rei snapped the lighter shut, eyes wide. “The east. Coming from the east.” 

“When?” 

“Now.” 

Rei was in position. She had her bow. Michiru stood at her side, waiting to see where she could slide in, rushing into the small spaces and the dark as the sea does, dragging them down to drown. They had been so for an hour at least. 

But the word made it so final. Even now, there was the apparition or the reality of that dark line on the eastern horizon, the final cry of evil coming in wisps like smoke. 

Mina nodded, her eyes scanning below. “I should see to everyone else. Before.” She sighed, began to walk away. “If we live, drinks are on me.”

“We do.” Rei shot the arrow of her voice. “We win. I saw that too. We win. We live.” 

Mina looked back and smiled. “Of course we fucking do. Who do you think we are?” 

In a flash, she leapt off the side of the building to some other perch below, and all the others perches with all the other senshi after it. 

”Liar.” Michiru turned back to the cool breeze off the sea. 

Rei thought she would yell. She thought she would scream and snipe and argue with Michiru, bitter Michiru, who saw herself as a tin soldier for a child instead of a comrade defending her queen with honor, Michiru, who had no particular honor in question, and Michiru, who Rei loved even as she hated everything about her. She wanted to yell. 

But all she could say was. “I did see it.” 

“Oh, of that I have no doubt,” she twirled her fingers and looked at the sea with a curious expression, ‘Interesting. Anyhow, of that I have no doubt, but,” she shrugged, “You certainly saw other possibilities as well. Come now, Rei, lies do not become us. You are more accurate than I, on this I will not quarrel. But you are a liar, in this moment, and I know that well.” 

“It--”

“It may astonish you to know that our dear commander was aware of that as well. ANd--”

“So what?!” Rei grabbed Michiru’s hand and pulled her to face Rei. “What does it matter if I’ve seen us die? And live? No one has to know that but me! Why do you need to make everything as--horrible as it can be? I know you hate Usagi, Michiru, I know it, everyone knows it, she knows it, even thought you think she’s stupid.” 

Rei was afire now, gesturing wildy. Michiru calmly crossed both her arms and her ankles as she stood, her face tilted as if she were the waiting ballerina in a Degas. 

“But you know what?!” At this, Rei grabbed her elbow, and drew her close, ignoring the rage that splashed in Michiru’s eyes, “She didn’t choose this either, Michiru. She was born into it too. Just like you.” 

“No,” Michiru shook her head, “or yes, in the same way that Haruka and I were both born to our stations.” 

She removed her arm from Rei’s grip with an icy shake and a quick push of the hand. Then she smiled, her hells tapping away from Rei as she went to sit on the edge of the building toward the east, the black line that might have been an illusion mere moments before coming in clearly now, a low roar barely audible on the wind. 

“So, the story ends today,” Michiru touched at the ring under her glove, “and what will the moral be?” 

It was not aimed at Rei. There was no answer to give, no matter how talented the Seer. Rei would not learn what the answer had been until she was a much older woman, and much water had flowed under the bridge of her inborn destiny.

“Well then, to the kiss of our prince. Steel and bone though he may be.” Michiru stood.  “The spell will be as broken as we, and we shall see what was inside of it after all.” 

We win. We have to win.

I am a lover of commas and m-dashes and semi-colons and therefore tend to write a lot of long sentences, so I've been trying to work on varying sentence length to create atmosphere/emotion.

This is from an unpublished prompt fill so it's a little bit out of context, but it is an example of me trying to so this.

Matty sniffs again. He's cold, even though it's a warm day. He feels very small. He wishes someone would come save him from George's upset. It could be a crew member. It could be a festival employee. Adam or Ross would work. Anyone. Anyone. Matty's pretty sure no one is coming.

My instinct is to write it more like this:

Matty sniffs again. He's cold, even though it's a warm day, and he feels very small. He wishes someone would come save him from George's upset, maybe a crew member, or a festival employee, or Adam, or Ross, or anyone. Anyone would be good enough, George wouldn't yell at him in front of anyone, but Matty is pretty sure that no one is coming.

I like the second one way better, but the first one does way better with creating some emotion and sharing how miserable and upset poor fictional!Matty is.

This is the first paragraph of Antichrist and I think it does the same sort of thing.

Neon. Matty's world is neon. Everything comes to him in flashes washed in pink. There's a mass of pink-washed bodies, dancing, moving in the room. Matty can't make out any faces, but that's ok. He has George, solid and real and visible. George, pressed against his back, arm around his waist to hold him close. George. Thank god for George. Matty is pretty sure George is his savior. He's pretty sure he needs saving, but not in the traditional sense. He needs someone next to him, someone to hold him, ground him when the world is washed in pink neon and coming in flashes.

I'm also very proud of my ability to simply write fiction. I still have the draft of the first thing I ever wrote and published and to be so honest, it's bad, but I just went back over a bunch of what I've published recently to avoid writing a paper and it's not bad. So. Ya'know.

Ok, Purdue Owl is great, everyone should use it. But folks. I am begging you. Spread the Good Word Of Our Lady and Savior Zotero. Never have to build a bibliography from scratch again!! This hand tool will build it for you! And only your pickiest professors will notice if it gets a comma out of place (in which case, check your finished bibliography against Purdue Owl!).

Seriously. Zotero is Free, open source, and easy to get started with. It has a desktop app and a browser site, but even better…it has a Firefox plugin (we are ALL using Firefox instead of Chrome right??? :vaguely threatening:) Reading an article and want to save the citation? Click the plug-in button and choose which library to save it to and boom, it imports all the info for you. Same with anything digital you want to cite. If you’re reading a physical book, it has a very simple form asking you for all the proper information (and then some) and then it saves it. Make libraries for your various projects, so you never lose a reference again. And when you’re ready to plug that Bibliography in? Just choose the items you want to use, then choose your prefered (or your professor’s preferred) citation style from among the dozens in its database, and copy and paste it into your document. Doing a group paper and want your group mates to add their citations to the bibliography? You can create public or private groups that anyone with a Zotero account can access them same as you.

If you’re associated with an institution of some kind, they may have institutional access to other citation managers, so play with them if you can. But Zotero anyone can use for free so it’s my favorite!

But take it from your friendly local academic librarian who went through a bachelors, a master’s, and half of another master’s before they discovered Zotero…citation managers are a GAME CHANGER!!

Citation Help w/Purdue OWL

Woooo, it’s paper writing time once again and paper writing means that its also  citation writing time! Been there sucked at that. Wished I knew Purdue OWL (online writing lab) existed. Which is why I’m sharing it with you now. Go forth friends, find your citation style, and be baffled no more.

Seriously I love this site. They cover the major styles, they’ve got examples of how to do everything, and the left hand bar makes it super easy to navigate. Also huzzah free cause those manuals are freaking expensive. If you need help finishing out your papers check it out y’all:
