The creation of syndicated newspaper artist Lewis Pardain, Lancer the Paper Fiend was an icon of the early twenties to late forties. Created during Pardains employment at the Kellbridge Chronicle the comics, titled "Lancer in the Inkwell," would revolve around Lancers interactions with the reader, the space around him, and the text speech bubbles and borders of the comic. It was a very meta fourth wall breaking comic strip and fairly well regarded by readers for its funny inventive usage of the medium.

Lancers personality in these comics could be described as a very curious but easily irritated/pestered character that would often 'fight' with the reader/artist. He was a strong headed character that often employed physical violence to get what he wanted, and would often erupt into angry blobs of text that covered the page.

In one of his most well known strips, he took a pin, stabbed the wall behind him, and words featured in that day's paper poured into the room. It was gags like these that drew fans to buy the paper just for Lancers antics.

When Pardain left Kellbridge chronicle to help build up the fledgling Liquid Laff Pictures with close friend Ivan Hoth, several other artists would attempt to fill the role of drawing for Lancer and the Inkwell.

However, due to various personal work and life related issues, these replacements tended to quit within one to two months.

The comics were notably never quite the same following Pardains departure, as they were lacking the inventive fourth wall breaking they were once known for and within two years the comic ended its run.

Miles already had a groupchat app that she used for her family but the rest of the band except Gayatri had to install them-Gwen and Miles G DID have one but she took it off because she only ever used it with 65 Peter and she had multiple meltdowns looking through their messages so she forced herself to out of mental safety and he smashed his phone in agonized sadness after finding out about Jefferson so all the data on it was lost

Gayatri has an additional old one she uses for school friends since she's so popular and dosen't want to fuck up and accidentally send Spiderwoman stuff to them

The layout of it has a notebook theme and is popular among black people thanks to it containing various exclusive black stickers and emojis and that's why Miles and Margo both use it

Hobie's a bit of a grandpa when it comes to technology because of being from the 70s and not having been at Spider Society for that long so he had a hard time communicating in it at first,not helped by his cockney

Peni is reverse where she considers it slighty obselete thanks to her futuristic world but in a charming shaking her head 'This old thing' way(Just like she does with Noir /hj)

Pavitr violently falls over from so much bouncing with his phone getting the brunt of it SO many times but it's somehow always completely intact despite having no special protection

It's where Miles came out to them after her egg cracked but she did because they were all sitting together physically so she'd have them there to comfort them as she sobbed in a big flurry of different emotions

The other girls then start sending her transfem memes on a regular basis and Miles G is actually the one who made her her Orihime pfp

They tried to have movie nights but the collective audhd proved to be too much so they just have normal ones

It's incredibly active and a mixed ass bag,one second they be talking about Spiderjunk,the next someone's venting to the point you can feel them shaking through their texts and then they're discussing the history of legos

Peni's the one who most uses it in class and had a special mini comic where she got it back from her principal and didn't learned her lesson at the end

Miles G was more hesitant to start using his app again than Gwen since his was actually the same but he prowlered through and now it's a healthy and stable part of his life

Gwen and Margo are an e-couple in the sense that they act exactly like girlfriends in it but are in denial irl

What do you use to draw?

I have a surface pro 8 at home and I use a 22in cintiq at work. Occasionally… I do personal art at work LOL. I use Photoshop CC almost exclusively except the occasional phone drawing which I’ll do on HeavyPaint or Autodesk Sketchbook (but mostly Heavypaint). What brushes do you use? For painting I use the same horrible brushes I downloaded from deviantart like 14 years ago and I cobbled them together for download here. And for lines ive been using shiyoon kim’s brushes which you can grab here. 

What do you use for plein air paintings? If it’s digital, almost exclusively Heavypaint. Traditional, I use gouache. A mix of Holbein acryla and normal gouache either windsor newton or m. graham.

What kind of sketchbook do you use? I use moleskine cahier XXL sketchbooks! I’ve been using moleskine cahiers for probably over 10 yrs now? they come in packs of 3 for like 30USD (the price went up recently booo but $10 per book is still not bad) for the largest size. I think a lot of people associate moleskine with intimidatingly fancy covers & paper but the cahiers are rly lightweight and flexible. you can bend the xxl into a roll like a newspaper and the covers are a light cardboard so you can draw all over them. I always have trouble with spiral sketchbooks getting fucked up in my backpack because I really throw my stuff around a lot but the binding on the cahiers can take a beating and have never fallen apart on me.

hey I know this is random out of the blue and unusual but do you ever read the dr strange comics? I'm trying to build a sanctum in the sims but I don't really have a grasp of what the layout looks like and I was hoping for incite from someone who's more versed.

I have read, and am still an avid reader of Doctor Strange comics!

I have some good news and bad news regarding your question. Bad news is that there is no real concrete layout of the sanctum. Not just because of comic inconsistencies from issue to issue but also because the building is an entity in itself and often moves to its own accord or to where Stephen needs to be. However! That means the sanctum can really be whatever you want it to be.

There are certain things which are consistent in the sanctum which vary in their position in the building, but those (from memory) go as followed:

Entrance way with the staircase. The sanctum has an iconic entryway which leads to a waiting room for clients and has that huge staircase in the middle. This is pretty consistent through comics and also the MCU.

Huge fuckass window. This window makes me laugh everytime I see it because it’s so silly. The sanctum always has that one big round window with the specific rune on it. (Looks like a basket ball tbh). The room behind it in the MCU is where artefacts are kept.

Basement/Undercroft. Most issues and the MCU have an underneath section for the sanctum. In the MCU it’s a basement/storage/washroom but in the Comics it was used to contain Mr Misery and other dubious creatures.

Library. The sanctum has a big library, unsurprisingly containing lots of books. I don’t think this is seen in the MCU apart from when Stephen does that cool teleporting thing in Ragnorok.

The comics also utilize long corridors of doors to other dimensions which is probably mirrored in the Rotunda gateways in the MCU. There’s also consistent usage of infinite stair cases as well.

Some weird things that have been within the sanctum from my reads which aren’t brought up ever again are a bath house, forest and room made of singing flesh.

References for the general inside layout of the sanctum are pretty hard to find, but if you’re desperate I’ve used the Lego sanctum layout once or twice. I have refs for various rooms within the sanctum from the comics, but tumblr won’t let me upload them for some reason. If you need anything specific don’t be afraid to dm! Always happy to help.

I’m honestly getting tired of the term “ship” and all the baggage it holds. I just want these characters to be happy and get along and be close. I’m tired of exclusively romantic connotations. The History of Zoinks (Essay)

Includes an etymological and cultural analysis of the usage of "jeepers," "jinkies," and "zoinks." Another post will include the follow-up study.

If you grew up watching Scooby-Doo, it may be easy to assume that groovy green tees, ascots, and vans painted with flowers were all standard 60s fare. However, recall that these teens were not written by teens; when the first episode aired, character designer Iwao Takamoto was 41, main writer Bill Lutz was 47, and creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were 36 and 31, respectively. Were they already out of touch? As put by Paul Dini, writer on Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo: “When you look at those characters, they are characters frozen in time. They’re not really what hippies or hipsters or cool kids were like. They’re what 50-year olds thought cool kids were like” (“Scooby Doo! The Whole World Loves You”).

The most iconic quantifiers of how close these characters were to the “cool kids” is their catchphrases: “jeepers,” “jinkies,” and “zoinks!” When we hear the cartoon’s catchphrases, which claim to characterize this era, we must ask: Did people really say these things? Even though these terms are almost exclusively associated with the franchise today, these words were not born for marketing. The writers were pulling from memories, trends, and histories which, if we trace backwards, may glean some evidence as to their cultural accuracy.

Daphne’s classic “jeepers” is said to have been first penned in 1928 by cartoonist Billy DeBeck, whose popular Barney Google strips coined similar terms as “heebie-jeebies” and “holy moly” (Chakraborty and Dosad 117). The true origin of the word is likely several decades earlier, as Google’s catchphrase “Horsefeathers!” was already coming out of fashion among the construction workers that used it when DeBeck revived it in his parody of Appalachian colloquialisms (Funk and Funk ix-x). At the time DeBeck picked up “jeepers,” it was used as a euphemism for “Jesus!” (Harper, “Etymology of jeepers”).

However, the Scooby-Doo writers were more likely to be familiar with Al Donahue’s song “Jeepers Creepers” (as in, “Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those peepers?”). The song jumped high enough in America’s popular music charts in 1939 that it was covered by Louis Armstrong, Larry Clinton, and later Frank Sinatra (Whitburn 533). As an alteration of “Jesus Christ,” the flexible phrase was perfect for bouncy love ballads (“Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!”) and as a horror movie motif in Jeepers Creepers. The fact that the film was released in 2001 speaks to the staying power of “jeepers.”

As for Velma’s catchphrase, “jinkies,” it may be a variation of a number of old Scots terms dating around the 18th-19th century, so you may as well pick your favorite: a synonym for “jauntily” (as “jink,” to dodge or flee; nowadays “to juke” may be applicable), a nonsense word in nursery rhymes (e.g., “Eetum, peetum, penny pie / Cock a lory, jinky jye”), or a child’s nightgown (Dictionary of the Scots Language); a type of knitted fingerless glove (see Kate Davies Designs); or yet, as a derivation of “high jinks,” a drinking game that dates back to at least the 17th century (Harper, “Etymology of jinkies”).

The term was first recorded as exclamation “By jinkies!” in the newspaper strip “Ella Cinders” in 1936. The first recorded use of the term by a human (assuming comic characters can’t mail in letters to the local paper) was in a 1938 edition of the Northern-Courier in the sports section. Ray writes: “By jinkies, on my next pass day I will surely stop and see that 178 foot wheelbase, fire truck. If I can’t make it in one day maybe I can get an extension. By Scooby’s birthday, the term was popular among college students and “overly earnest” speakers (Iseli), fitting for the youngest of the gang who is always piping up with a clue to prove her intellectual merit.

Unlike “jeepers” and “jinkies,” which have decent pedigrees preceding Scooby-Doo, neither “zoinks” nor “zoink” directly appear in any written work before 1969, although they have a number of distant cousins. The closest approximation comes from television: a famous bit in 1958’s “Robin Hood Daffy” where Daffy swings from tree to tree, calling, “Zoiks, and away!” with each jump, only to crash face-first into a tree every time. His iconic lisp makes it difficult to parse whether he’s saying “zoiks” or “yoiks.” The latter would seem more likely, as “yoiks” and its sister “hoiks” have a long history as hunting words. On a bright and early morning in 1843, Sir Godfrey calls for his friend to hurry and saddle up: “Hoik, 'squire! . . . hoik, hoik! High wind him! Drag on him, yoiks, tally-ho!" (Mills 125). On the tail of a fox chase in 1774, a hunter in pursuit exclaims, “Yoiks, hark forward!” (Kelly 6). Contextually, neither sound too far from the modernized “Zoinks, let’s scram, Scoob!” The first “zoiks” was penned around 1584, in a sonnet of all things: “With mightie maters mynd I not to mell, / As copping Courts, or Comonwelthis, or Kings / Quhais craig zoiks fastest, let tham sey thame sell; / My thoght culd nevir think vpon sik things” (Montgomery 1–4). I can’t claim a clue about what the rest means, but “zoiks fastest” leads me to think this is a “jink”/”juke” situation; in “zoiking”, the narrator is fleeing from the cowersome courts, commonwealths, and kings. Coincidentally, “mynd I not to mell” sounds almost adjacent to “meddle,” another word popularized by Scooby-Doo. All of the “zoinks” family are employed as interjections preceding movement.*

In sum, while “jinkies” appears to have had some relevance at the time of Scooby-Doo’s inception, “jeepers” is a bit dated in comparison, and “zoinks” has a vast etymological tree but no direct precursors. The advantage to having a cast of characters who are, in the words of Paul Dini, “frozen in time,” is that they are living time capsules. We can choose any point within 50 years and see unique perceptions of culture, politics, music, style, and our focus: vocabulary. But how well do these perceptions line up with reality?

*All, that is, except one. “Yoiks” may also be used to refer to egg yolks, as in a cookbook from 1762: “Take a large Fowl, or a Pound of Veal, as much grated Bread, half a Pound of Sewet . . . Mace, two Cloves, half a Nutmeg grated, about a large Tea Spoonful of Lemon-peel, and the Yoiks of two Eggs” (Glasse 38). Add an olive toothpick on top and you have a Shaggy sandwich!

With a firm pat upon the earth, Caelus shoots off the ground as he flips back onto his feet, procuring his phone while driving a decisive axe kick towards one of the soda dogs. Just the contact was alone to serve as a mental balm for his growing agitation.

Now! Time to multitask!

While in the midst of cross countering one of those dice rollers with a punch that craters the earth, the Trailblazer's eyes behaved utterly irresponsibly, looking through his text while fighting. Could this be a testament to expecting an important contact? Maybe this was simply his pride talking, and dealing with the same variant of enemy has overstayed its welcome.

Caelus's growing wonder immediately shoots into abrupt displeasure. For the notice icon showed Gallagher. While he certainly doesn't mind being a semi-regular around his bar, it was an entirely different concern once this man and technology dared to interact. Oh, the dread was already making his stomach try to fall upon the hip bone.

"Don't be stupid, don't be stupid, please don't be--"

He checks the text. A hopeful heart and a natural current of concern in tow.

It doesn't even take three seconds to proceed regretting it.

Caelus almost proceeded to crack his phone, the sheer will exercised within his intent causing him to grip it ferociously. It certainly hand't changed the abrupt exhaust of pure path power erupting from his being. By now, the essence of Destruction was singing its battle chants through his veins.

"GALLAGHERRRRRRRR!!!"

At this point the bat found itself immediately cast aside. For the next breath the Trailblazer took, what looked like an utterly comical amount of steam exhausts from his nose! The sound of a train whistle was perfectly timed with it, nearly causing the approaching meme to stumble back in shock. Which in all certainty was a mistake, for this brawler's killing intent immediately honed on the opponent he remembered was there.

RISING UPPER!

A decisive flying uppercut would be his answer, each and every knuckle supercharged with Caelus's will as the mechanical dinosaur, a beast weighing literal tons was launched from the ground as if it was a paper weight. Just from the mere pressure alone was that hulking form evaporating on the spot. However, this wouldn't even be the weirdest instance.

Oh no, something utterly dreamlike transpires from the drinksmith's phone. It'd seem as if it was beginning to morph, for a fleeting instant, hints of energy sparked from that phone before the utterly frustrated face of Caelus began to appear, using the device as a momentary catalyst in order to glare this man down. In short, it was the type of stunt that'd make any Clockie show goer proud.

"AFTER THESE GODDAMN MEMES GET A DIRT NAP, I'M PUTTIN YOU ON THE KICKASS MENU NEXT!" Deeeeep breath!

Proceeds to point at him through the usage of a charger cable.

"CAUSE I'M MAKIN THIS GRAVEYARD MYSELF."

Then through a fluttering stir of golden light did the entire scene revert, revealing a phone turned back to normal.

DUN-DUN! Boyfriend Dungeon time. Which fine piece of weapon would your character be? How would it feel like to wield them?

Fighting the initial first urge slash red herring thought to make Jason into some sort of ballistic weaponry given how his usage of guns is very notable for him (and because in a Boyfriend Dungeon-esque game it would be fun as a ranged option)HOWEVER, I personally feel some sort of knife or dagger would suit his character overall a little better :0 💭

In the our supernatural verse, I'd probably make him a Hunter's Knife to go with the fact that he's a monster hunter (and because he's a lot more rough and grounded in this timeline), while in the Main Verse I'd say he'd be a Kris - a waved, engraved and asymmetrical dagger culturally used in Indonesia and parts of Southeast Asia - similarly to the one he iconically carries in the comics, which was gifted to him post-resurrection by Talia (daughter of Ra's Al Ghul, Head of the Demon).

While it can be used as a weapon, the Kris also associated with ceremonial purposes and are sometimes even considered pieces of art, which suits not only the mystical aspects surrounding his resurrection but also the more delicate aspects of his personality, including his deep interest in culture, literature and art. Historically, the Kris as a weapon are also known to be frequently broken and reforged which -- make of that what you will >>''

In a combat context within either verse, despite his brute force and brazen exterior, I think a more rogue-like implement fits him because it embodies not only his overt physicality, but his stealth, speed and penchant for striking unexpectedly - and, because it requires affinity in close combat, it, much like Jason, makes everything a lot more personal. To wield him would be to wield something raw and beating, hot and thrumming with your own pulse in your hands as you course with the adrenaline of survival, driven by the fires of just retribution; He's an extension of yourself, your partner and lifeline, and he won't break while there's a fight left to fight out there.

In conclusion; Jason is a tank rogue thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I know. Look, I KNOW. But this is quite literally one of the most genius and thematically-coherent supervillain reveals I have ever seen in a superhero movie. HE WAS THE BAGEL GUY I WAS SO GAGGED! I left the theater and had to stare at a wall like this is excellent usage of pre-existing comic book characters to further one of the movie's messages, which is to not underestimate people!
