Filipino Food, Slidin' Thru NW, and the Grandest place on Earth
Bicycle hug! Hello! This week was a really exciting one, and full of some of my favorite restaurants.
I really wanted Future Husband to try some real Filipino food (is there really any other kind?) so I brought him to the best in Vegas- Elena's Restaurant!
Their specialty is the adobo fried rice omelet, which is chicken or pork marinated and cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic, and then stuffed into an egg omelet with Filipino fried rice. It's a Filipino food explosion, and no one does it better than Elena's. Don't trust the imitators in Vegas, this is the place to buy this dish!
A couple of days later, I decided it was time for Future Husband to try an original Vegas establishment- Slidin' Thru. Their story is really a retelling of the American dream- a couple years ago, a young guy in Vegas doesn't really know what to do with his life, after dabbling with cooking school and some college education. He buys a food truck and starts selling tiny burgers. And then BOOM, he struck it big. Credited for singlehandedly jump starting the Vegas food truck culture, Slidin' Thru is no longer just a truck- it's also a fast food restaurant (with another location opening later this year), and the guys at Slidin' Thru also organize a monthly food truck, street vendor, and street art festival called Vegas Streats. It's seriously one of the coolest events in Vegas, with several delicious food trucks, live music and art installations, and other vendors you can buy clothing and art from.
With the truck not being anywhere near my house that saturday, we decided to get the bikes out and ride 9 miles to Slidin' Thru NW, their fast food restaurant.
Dreambike and I, warming up for the big ride in my parking lot!
It was an incredibly beautiful day- not a cloud in the sky, and the mountains were completely visible here, about half way on our journey on North Rampart.
Here's an idyllic shot of myself, riding my steel horse down the street in the wild, wild west.
They have awesome decor here- they're actually comic book themed. The story is that Captain Slidin' Thru is here to save you from the evil Dr. Stale Buns. How awesome is that? Every fast food place should have a cool back story.
It's not Vegas without a little neon, right? Take a look at the upper left hand side of the picture. Here's a close up of it-
This is their twitter page, which live updates all the tweets that they send or receive. Future Husband's is at the top! Underneath this screen, they have a second that is devoted to Instagram photos.
Here's my food- I got a buffalo soldier, which is a chicken and bacon slider (my favorite!) and a pep-pep, which is beef with cheese, bacon, onion straws, and their special sauce. I also got a side of fries and a drink.
Future Husband's order was much fancier than mine. I don't remember which sliders he got (I think one was chicken salad), but he got these fries that were drizzled with balsamic glaze and sprinkled with feta cheese. YUM.
Here I am, donning my best saturday hair. The face of a happy customer. : )
We spent the following day in awe at the Grand Canyon. We didn't bring the bikes. But who cares; it's the Grand freaking Canyon.
