Today

Today I said goodbye to someone I thought was going to change everything. But I can't be mad that she left. I told her to go. She got such a good offer, I couldn't let her stay even though she wanted to turn it down. And even when she asked me to move there with her, I couldn't do it. She begged. God just thinking about the look on her face when I said no. I should have left with her today. I'm so stupid for not going. She was my distraction. And now that I don't have that all I can think about is you. I've been thinking of every excuse I can to talk to you. I tried to see you. But you can't see me and I completely understand. I know it's probably a good idea I don't see you. You've got your new person that is "so much better then I ever was". And that's good. If that's honestly what you think of me, I don't want to see you. Because that shows me you still haven't realized why I had to stop and walk away. I just wish things could have been different. Maybe I should have left with her. I should have moved away to another state and my life would be perfect. Not even for her, because I didn't want to go just to be with this girl. We agreed to go as friends if I actually went. Just incase. But still, I need to get the fuck out of this state. I need to find myself and what's meant for me. But what happens if you've already found that and it's gone?

‘Hawaii bloesje en te grote zonnebril’

Ik had de naam Jagwar Ma al eens eerder voorbij zien komen maar was er altijd heilig van overtuigd dat het één of ander obscuur Vietnamees elektrobandje was of een stel drummende boeddhistische monniken uit Tibet. Blijkt dat Ma doodgewoon de achternaam is van Australisch bandlid Jono en dat Jagwar een verbastering is van jaguar en dat die jaguar op een schilderij stond die de band kreeg van een vriend die het weer gevonden had langs een stoffig verlaten weggetje ergens in the middle of nowhere in Australië.

Aha... Maar deze Aussies maken met debuutplaat Howlin’ ook nog eens verfrissende muziek die doet denken aan lang vergeten tijden waarin de Madchester sound nog de lakens uitdeelde. Strakke beats, argeloze bliepjes (maar wel allemaal op de juiste plek), zorgeloze zang en mediterende drums - Jagwar Ma pakt je zonder dat je het echt doorhebt en neemt je mee op een bijzondere reis langs The Stone Roses, The Charlatans en Happy Mondays. Zelfs Tame Impala komt af en toe even om de hoek kijken. Hawaii bloesje open, te grote zonnebril op en handjes in de lucht. Dat gevoel. De band bestaat uit Gabriel Winterfield, Jack Freeman en dus eerdergenoemde Jono Ma. Ze zijn geen doorsnee band met gitaar, bas en drums maar halen hun prettige geluidjes uit synths, drumcomputers, samples en loops. De relaxte vocals van Winterfield doen de rest. Dus zin in een feestje? Ik weet wel wie ik uit zou nodigen...
