The starting point

So, I feel like I need to have somewhere to moan to and complain to when I’m in pain. Can’t keep moaning to everyone behind me. By God, I’d get sick of listening to me moan about arthritis for 13 years. 

I was first diagnosed back in 2004 with Rheumatoid arthritis. I originally had an impetigo infection in my right knee. I went into surgery and had the issue sorted and was off my knee for 2 weeks. This is very hard when you’re 9 years old, as all you want to do is run and jump around. We lived in Germany at the time as my dad was a soldier and I was under the German paediatrician. 

We think the arthritis came from there, as it’s no hereditary and it was shortly after the infection that I got diagnosed as things weren’t getting any better. From that point on, my arthritis has spread to the point where it’s in most of my major joints. When we were in Germany, i didn’t get much treatment due to us needing a translator. If the appointment went ahead, the translator didn’t turn up. If the translator turned up, the appointment was cancelled. 

I ended up being referred to Leeds General Infirmary (Paediatrics). This was about 2 years later, from that point on, I was told I have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. I had my appointments once a year and ahd my joints drained every years as well. Once we moved back to the UK in 2010, I was referred to Rotherham Hospital. Once I had moved out, it was Lincoln Hospital and that’s where I am now. 

From it being to just in my right knee, it’s now both knees, hips, shoulders, wrists and it’s also starting to affect my jaw. I no longer have full movement in my right wrist. It barely moves and I can’t even take a pen lid off with it (which is extra annoying as I’m right-handed). My knees don’t mend, my hips grind and I can’t lift my arms into the air due to the damage in my shoulders. 

I’ve been on numerous types of medication, including Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine and Naproxen. I am now finally bad enough to go onto a biological treatment. Yes, I said bad enough. It cost the NHS upwards of £9000 a year to put a patient on it so the guidelines are very strict. I’m going on something called adalimumab. I hopefully get my first injection in 3-4 weeks. I’m on no pain control or anti-inflammatory as I’ve been waiting for this new medication to come through. 

Hopefully this will be my first start to a better life, a life that I’ve been waiting for, for 13 years. No more pain, no more aches or swelling. This is the first step to a new journey.
