Just because Matt could be lurking on here (I see you big guy) doesn’t mean I’m gonna be any less freaky
Either he can match my freak or leave (I already know he can)

i imagine gyno!matty to take place in new york or seattle (greys anatomy reference ofc) so im picturing him calling girlie to be ready by friday night so he can come pick her up. he brings her to a really nice hotel with a giant window that overlooks the whole city. basically it’s just a vacation for both of them to fuck for like 3 days straight (esp against the window.) also she wears her prettiest lingerie (probably bought by him) and and and
YES! was gonna write a little blurb on this but i am so burnt out (and tumblr deleted what i wrote👎🏻) so i will expand :)
ofc the greys reference! i’m biased to NY so let’s say that’s where this is set. he’s def calling girlie all bossy (in a good way) and in charge, not letting her lift a finger and taking care of everything. “Taking you out on Friday for the weekend, I’m taking off from work. Wear something nice and pack cute outfits.” cute outfits code for lingerie and sexy fits for a date night duh. when he picks her up from her apartment he doesn’t tell her where they’re going yet (element of surprise and all that) but when they pull up to the hotel she’s like Wow! all of this for me?? and he’s like ofc anything for my Princess. and then they get to the actual room and her jaw is dropped like?? the view the room itself, it’s an all inclusive experience (he would be extra like this.) and he’s like “Gonna fuck you all weekend, baby. Can scream as loud as you want, no one will bother us.” and she’s like ok get ur clothes off lol! and when he sees her pretty matching set he freaks out, then he sees it’s the one he bought her. “Love to see my girl in the things I spoil her with. Look so fuckin’ good. Do a spin for me.” and ur like yes sir lol being so obedient for him!
also thinking of floor to ceiling windows (w a little balcony maybe), he presses her up against the glass and fucks her. “They can all see you getting fucked like a whore, baby. Bet they’re jealous that they can’t have you, huh? That I’ve ruined everyone else for you.” and he’s relentless, even if she’s getting shy (he loves it more) “What would they think? Nice girl like you being fucked dumb by her doctor.” just know every surface of that room they’re fucking on it, he can’t be tamed!! also could see her teasing him like “aw u left ur big boy doctor job just to fuck me all week lol, highly unprofessional” and he’s like “yea ok babe i’ll show u unprofessional” <3

Prisoner Of Your Eyes ~ Matt Hardy
Word count: 2,483  A soft yawn escaped me as I woke up and stretched, finding a cold spot in the bed where my boyfriend should've been. I stayed in bed a few minutes longer and wondered where my lover was before getting out of bed and slipping one of Matt's shirts on, basking in his scent as I rubbed a tiny section of my lower stomach before walking out of our bedroom and heading downstairs to the main level of the house.
"Matty?"
I called out, no verbal answer returning. Nearing the kitchen, I heard quiet noises and smelled pancakes as well as eggs cooking.
"Matt?"
I stood in the doorway, taking in the sight of my longtime boyfriend making breakfast in nothing but a pair of tight boxers. Walking over, my arm wrapped around him which caused him to jump before I pressed a kiss to his shoulder.
"It's just me, hot stuff. Good morning..."
Trailing kisses over his shoulder, I hummed softly and rubbed my hand gently over his torso.
"Mornin' to you too, sugar. How're you feeling today?"
"Not bad... I'm just wondering why you're up so early..."
"Had a bit of a rough night, so I figured I'd come down here and make breakfast for us. Gotta keep my girl fed so my babies can be big and strong. Besides, we can't have my sexy sidekick manager getting all tired during our promo or my match, now can we?"
"No, we can't. But we can't have our big, strong champion getting tired either."
I blushed slightly, shaking my head and moving to his side as I gathered my thoughts. His free arm wrapped around me as he pressed a small kiss to my forehead.
"Did you sleep last night? At all?"
"I got a few hours in, nothin' to worry your pretty little head about. Spent most of the night with you curled up on me anyways, so I can't say it was a bad night."
"Matty... You were worrying about us, weren't you?"
My words were soft as I looked up at him, studying his deep brown eyes. He went silent for a moment, nodding slowly.
"I was just thinking about everything, about being parents... About how utterly bullshit it is that we have to hide everything from our friends... I'm sick of hiding. It's not who I am, and sure as fuck ain't who you are."
I got on tiptoe, kissing his cheek.
"Hey... Relax for a little bit, okay babe? Things are gonna be alright. Let's have breakfast, then talk things over... Sound good?"
He nodded slowly, rubbing his thumb over my lower stomach.
"Everything sounds good when it comes to you, sweet thing."
He grinned, grabbing my ass and pressing a sweet kiss to my lips. Kissing back, I hummed softly and carefully dug my nails into his skin. We broke the kiss a minute later as I slipped out of his grip and grabbed some juice from the fridge before sitting at the island, studying the man I'd fallen in love with back when we first started dating back in college. We'd both dropped out after a year for varying reasons, but had always stuck by each other's sides.
"Hey, Reaper?"
"Yeah, goregous?"
"I love you so incredibly much, and I'm glad I get to spend my time on this earth with you."
He turned the stove off, moving our food to the island before standing in front of me and gently taking my face between his hands.
"Y/N, you are the best thing that's ever happened to me. No title belt, no championships... Nothing in this life could ever compare to you and our baby, and I swear on everything I am that I'll marry you one day. I promise it."
He moved his arms around my waist, letting his forehead rest on mine.
"You're my girl, and I'm always gonna do my damnedest to right by you until the day I take my last breath."
"Matt-"
I was cut off by his lips pressing against mine lovingly, my eyes sliding shut as I melted into the kiss. One of his hands moved to my thigh and carefully pulled me closer to his body. After a few minutes, he trailed his kisses to my neck before pulling back slightly.
"I'm tempted to pick you up, head to our room, and just-"
A low groan erupted from his throat as he stood back a bit, biting his lip for a moment. I studied him, my fingers trailing down over his torso before I gently raked my nails over his hips.
"Woman, you're gonna be the undoing of me, I swear it."
A smirk formed on my lips as I brought a hand up to his hair, tugging gently.
"Breakfast could wait a little while, you know... We don't have to get ready to head over to the arena for a few hours."
He bit his lip as I ran my fingers through his long, soft hair, my hand moving slowly downward before I let myself scratch my nails over the nape of his neck.
"You're so easy to rile up, Matty. I love seeing you so eager for me, so wanting... So perfect, my king."
He shivered and stepped back slightly as I looked down at his lips, so tempted to do everything in my power to make the man I loved feel as blissful as he'd always made me feel. I must've zoned out because when I came to, my face was back in Matt's hands and his lust filled eyes were studying mine.
"If you don't stop looking at my lips without doing anything about it, I will take you right here on this counter."
His voice was deep and calm, each word carefully spoken in case I'd zoned out. My smirk grew as I looked up at him and raised an eyebrow ever so slightly.
"Is that so? Big bad Matthew's gonna take me, huh?"
I teased, my smirk growing into a grin.
"That's so, darlin'."
He lifted me onto the countertop, trailing kisses over my neck as his hands slipped under the shirt and rubbed over my bare skin.
"I wanna tell someone..."
My words came out almost in a whisper, my eyes closing for a few moments as my nerves kicked in.
"Hey... Hey now, open those pretty eyes of yours and look at me, sweetheart..."
His words were soft, his hand moving from my hips and stomach to my cheek as he rubbed his thumb over it gently. I did as he said, biting my lip.
"If you really wanna start telling people, then we can. You know I'm all for that, but only if you're absolutely sure you wanna. We've got work in a couple of hours, and I'm sure Jeff and Shawn would love to find out that they're gonna be uncles in a few months. 'Specially Jeff. On top of that, Eddie'd freak out at the thought of a tiny, little bebe lindo to spoil and train once they get big enough..."
I nodded, giggling at the thought of what Eddie might do once I told him that Matt and I were going to be parents.
A few hours later, Matt and I checked into the arena and parked before getting out of the car. He rubbed my back reassuringly as we carried our bags inside, heading to security to find out where our locker room was. Once we found out, Matt dropped off our bags while I headed to catering to check in with our friends and to catch up with one of my most beloved friends, Shawn.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the party has arrived!"
Jeff ran over, wrapping his arms around me before picking me up and spinning me around for a moment. Laughing, I ruffled his hair as he set me down and grinned.
"Y'know Jeffo, with the way you act someone's gonna think you haven't seen me in years."
He shrugged as he let me go, a wild look in his eyes.
"What can I say? My best friend's here, and if people don't like it... Well, then they can take DX's words and suck it."
I nodded, looking around the room for a moment. I bit my lip for a moment, the thought that I'd have to hide my relationship with Matt... No, not just the relationship with the man I'd loved... The thought that I had to hide the relationship with the man I'd been head over heels in love with for years, along with the fact that I was just over two and a half months pregnant with his baby. When I focused back on Jeff, I finally noticed the look in his eyes.
"You okay, hun?"
His voice was quiet as his hand rubbed over my arm, knowing it'd calm me down if I was anxious.
"Just thinking about some things..."
I fought against rubbing my hand over my stomach, sighing quietly. Days like this were rough, and he knew it. We'd been friends since Matt and I were in college, and he knew how much it hurt to keep our relationship a secret from our friends and coworkers.
"Wanna go to the locker room and talk about it?"
I nodded, looking around the room in an attempt to find the select few friends I wanted to tell first.
"Yeah... I need to find a few people before we head back..."
I let Jeff go, spotting Shawn along with Eddie and Rey. Walking over to them, I wrapped my arms around Eddie.
"Howdy boys!"
"Hey beautiful!"
"Hey chica! What's up?"
I smiled, Rey grinning.
"Hola, mamacita. What brings a goregous lady like you over?"
Letting go of Eddie and standing between Rey and Shawn, I looked around at my found family and felt my cheeks heat up a bit.
"I missed my boys, and needed to talk to you guys about something anyway. Would you guys wanna hang out in locker room à la Hardy?"
Shawn wrapped an arm around my shoulders, nodding.
"Of course!"
We walked over to where Jeff had been standing, Matt standing beside him.
"Off to the locker room?"
Matt asked, smiling as I nodded and glanced toward his lips before meeting his eyes again. We started walking, Matt and Eddie joking about one thing or another as Rey and Jeff started to play around leaving Shawn and I to walk in peaceful silence. We reached the room after a few minutes, my heart beating a million miles a minute and my thoughts racing just as fast. Everyone found a place to sit once we got inside, Matt moving to sit by my side as the door closed behind Rey.
"What'd you need to talk about, chica?"
I bit my lip for a moment, staring down at my lap and trying to collect myself. Matt rubbed over my back to help me calm down, my hand slipping over my stomach.
"Matt and I have been together for years... Since college, actually--"
"Kid, everybody's known that since day one. You guys are perfect for each other."
I blushed slightly at Shawn's words, nodding.
"And he still hasn't proposed, gentlemen!"
I looked up, laughing at Jeff as Matt looked over at him and mouthed something that I couldn't catch. I stuck my tongue out at him before getting back to my train of thought, looking to Matt as my nerves kicked in.
"Do you wanna tell them, Matty?"
I asked quietly, leaning into his touch. Eddie leaned forward, arms resting on his knees as he raised a brow slightly.
"Hey, mamacita. Whatever it is, you can tell us. We're not gonna judge you."
I looked back to my family, my cheeks heating up as my hand subtly rubbed over my skin. Shawn's brows furrowed slightly before he raised one, studying me.
"You're not injured, are you kid?"
He glanced to my stomach, letting me know what exactly he was getting at.
"Not injured, Shawn. I promise. Matt and I are... Well... Matt y yo vamos a tener un bebé pronto! Todos ustedes serán tíos!"
"What!?"
"A-are you serious, chica?"
I nodded, giggling at Shawn and Jeff's confusion.
"We're having a baby!"
I shifted onto my knees, slipping my shirt up a bit to reveal my small bump as Jeff and Shawn shouted in excitement. Within moments, I was surrounded by the five men I loved as they wrapped me in a group hug.
"Congratulations, mi querida! I'm so happy for you both!"
Rey beamed, Eddie sitting back and staring at me in awe.
"You're really going to have a baby? No bullshitting?"
Jeff asked quietly, looking between Matt and I in shock. Matt nodded, smiling genuinely.
"Yeah Jeffo, we're having a baby!"
Jeff grinned, ruffling my hair playfully. He sat back, seeming to get lost in thought as Shawn piped in.
"How far along are you guys?"
"A few days over the two and a half month mark. We're due toward the end of October, so maybe we'll have a little Halloween baby."
Matt smiled genuinely, leaning over to press a kiss to my cheek before turning toward our family.
"Nobody can tell any of the McMahons, alright? At least not yet anyway."
I nodded, relaxing a bit.
"Me and Matt have agreed that I'm going to keep managing and valeting for you boys as long as I can, and we all know Vince would try to force me to go onto maternity leave early if he knew. Though we could possibly drop hints for the fans, and the rest of our coworkers, and make it seem as if it were an off the cuff storyline..."
"That could work... And since you usually get put into storylines with all of us... Maybe we could make it seem like there's a chance any one of us could be the kid's father, to get any heat that comes off of Matt and to make sure that you can stick around as long as we can manage."
"Rey, you're a genius!"
Jeff beamed, running a hand through his multicolored hair before making his way over and hugging us both again.
"You're gonna be a great father, Matty!"
We spent the next little while talking about what the plans should be, Matt occaisionally heading to catering to get me food and things to drink, telling me to relax and just let him take care of me. One of the guys would head out for their match or promo, the others watching with me before trading out at different times in the night. When it came time for Matt and I to cut our promo everyone in our found family knew what to do. They waited in the gorilla for their cues from Matt or I, our music hitting and the crowd cheering in excitement as I escorted the love of my life down to the ring.

Róisín had just gotten off the phone with Seonghwa to figure out where and what the group was doing for the night. She had some surprises for them and really wanted to spend quality time with her children before she left for the holidays. The issue with that thought though might have been the fact….they didn’t know she was leaving yet. They thought she was going to be in South Korea for the rest of the year. Boy were they going to be in for a surprise when she drops the bomb on them. Because where would they go if some of them needed to destress away from the group?! Calling her is not enough! The thought of them all whining at her made her smile wide as she stopped in front of their door to set the bags down for just a second.
She lifted her hand up to knock when the door swung open for her, showing a very happy looking Wooyoung who was about ready to tackle her into a hug before he saw the bags and boxes she was holding. “Noona’s here!” He shouted for the group, immediately stepping out into the hall to grab some of the bags off the ground to help her.
San ran out right after Wooyoung and squealed loudly once he saw what she’d brought the group. “SHE HAS GIFTS!!!! WAIT WHY DO YOU HAVE GIFTS! YOU DISAPPEAR WHEN YOU GIVE US GIFTS!” He screamed at her, staring at her wide eyed as he pointed at her.
She sighed and stepped through the door, frowning a little at him as she rearranged the boxes in her hands. “Lovely to see you too Sannie, thank you so much for the help.” She said with a fake smile, sarcasm dripping off her tongue heavily.
Once those words left her lips, San grabbed half the things from her arms and disappeared into the living room, shouting at the guys to get up and help her. “Seriously? You lazy people.” He grumbled as he stepped back out to see her, grabbing the rest of the things in the hallway while Wooyoung lead her into the living room.
The moment she stepped into the room with her 2 boxes in hand, everyone stood up to attack her at once. “Noona!” She heard from all around her while being encompassed by males.
She let two of the boys grab both boxes and lift them from her arms before she lifted her arms up and opened them for the group to hug her. “Alright my loves! Hugs for everyone!” She yelled happily, allowing the whole of them to attack her at once.
Before she was even able to say something else, someone walked up to her with mistletoe and grinned evilly at her, silently offering to hold it above her and someone else in the room. She glared at them and shook her head, wanting nothing more than to chase after him and tackle him so he wouldn’t do it. “Oh look! You’re under the mistletoe!” Mingi finally shouted with a laugh, pointing at Róisín and Seonghwa.
She sighed and shook her head. “You guys are such children.” She grumbled in English, turning to Seonghwa who was staring at her expectantly, a small grin on his face.
With barely any hesitation from her end, she leaned in to kiss him on the cheek, rolling her eyes afterwards when he chuckled at her expression. “Nice to see how much you love me.” He said without a hint of sincerity in his voice.
The redhead glared at the eldest boy and hissed quietly, turning away from him with a small grumble under her breath. “This is the last time I buy any of you guys gifts. I come over to spend time with you before the holidays and this shit happens. Jeez.” She mumbled, half in English, half in Korean.
Hongjoong wrapped an arm around her and kissed her temple, holding her as close to his own body as possible. “You know we love you too much to let you do that. It’s really good that you’re here. We promise.” He chuckled when she just huffed at him.
She gave up even remotely trying to complain about the way they were treating her with the teasing and sat down on the couch, Jongho and Yeosang on either side of her. “You two are now my favorites because you’re not making fun of me. Here open these.” She sighed out, hugging each boy for a few seconds before handing them a box and a bag.
Yeosang immediately ripped the paper off the box and stared at it, wondering whether or not he was seeing what he was truly seeing. “Is this-Is this a new board?” He asked her, spotting the grin gracing her face as she watched him.
“Yeah, and now you can teach me how to ride since you have two boards instead of one.” She giggled, hugging him after he set the box with the board in it on the ground.
He held her for a good minute or so, and even after she turned to look over at Jongho, didn’t let her go. “You’re the best Noona in the world.” He mumbled with a smile, hiding his face in your neck as she just pet his head, looking toward the youngest as he opened his bag up.
When the maknae peeked into the bag, his face lit up and he turned to her. “Are you serious?!” He asked happily, pulling out a jacket he’d seen in his favorite store.
She giggled and nodded her head, resting her head on Yeosang’s who still refused to release her. Jongho fell into her lap and hugged around her waist since she couldn’t move toward him, her hands running through his hair while his face buried into her stomach. “How did you know?!” He asked her, feeling her laughter along with hearing it.
At seeing the excitement of two of their members, the rest of the crew sat down around the couch, some in chairs, some on the ground; and they started opening the gifts labeled to them. Or, all except Hongjoong who was looking at her with narrowed eyes. “These gifts are amazing.” He started, arms crossed as she tried to innocently look at him.
At the stare faced toward her she slowly felt her resolve crumble until she sighed and slumped a little in Yeosang and Jongho’s arms. “Okay….Sannie was onto something earlier when he was yelling in the hallway…” She huffed out, pouting a little at Hongjoong’s triumphant smile.
Yeosang slowly let her go in confusion and Jongho sat up to listen to her. She leaned forward while biting her lip, wondering how she was going to explain this to them and at such short notice. “So uh….I’m going to the states in two days…” She finally got out, her left hand reaching to her right to start twisting the ring on her finger.
Yeosang at seeing her fidgety posture grabbed her hand and intertwined their fingers so she wouldn’t feel too worried. So instead of playing with her ring, she started rolling her tongue ring around while she stared at the group of guys all giving her different looks. Some were staring at her in surprise, and some were looking like they were going to cry, but a couple of them were frustrated with her. “Look. I know I said we were going to spend more time together, but this is my family we’re talking about. I haven’t seen them in almost a year now. I promise though we’ll hang out as soon as I come back okay?” She started rambling while hoping the guys wouldn’t freak out on her.
Yunho kneeled down in front of her and tilted his head, trying to see if she was lying, or maybe about to cry, or maybe he was just trying to sit in front of her for no reason; she had no idea. “Who’s going with you?” He asked simply, seeing as she was trying her hardest to focus on her lap.
The room quieted down at the questions as the guys stared at her, wondering who she was taking with her to the states. In their defense she always brought at least one person to her home area, though she wouldn’t bring them to her actual home. This time, she just frowned and shook her head, biting her lip so she wouldn’t answer verbally. Jongho touched her arm and frowned. “You’re not taking anyone?” He asked her.
She sighed. “I’m taking Matty. Because he’s also dragging me to his family’s home in LA. We’ll be gone at least two weeks. Through the rest of the year.” She explained, wincing just a little big when the group all gave different reactions to her answer.
San finally frowned at the group. “Why is it so bad that she’s leaving? It’s not like she’s leaving forever. She needs to see her family too.” He said to everyone, seeing the looks morphing on their faces once they let it sink in what he was saying.
Hongjoong pouted but finally nodded his head in agreement to what San was saying. “No you’re right. It’s just weird thinking that you’re gonna be so far away…” He said, crossing his arms as he huffed in the end like a child.
She smiled a little and stood up, resting a hand on Yunho’s head and ruffling his hair a little as he scrunched his nose up at her, his new bracelet glittering on the wrist he removed her hand with. “Noonaaaaa!”
Róisín laughed lightly before stopping in front of Hongjoong, both of them just staring for a moment. “Please just see what I got you?” She asked him, handing him the bag left on the ground.
He sighed and took it from her, peeking in to see if he could see what it was. “Did you get me more socks or something?” He grumbled with a tiny smile, giving her a hard time for the matching socks she got the two of them.
She glared at him. “You love those socks, just admit it.” She hissed before shaking her head, “no they’re not socks. It’s something else. That I hope you’ll see a lot.” She said quietly, rubbing her arm as her anxiety piqued and she hid her face.
He pulled out a photo album, filled to the brim with photos of the boys and her throughout the year and a half they’ve known each other. One where they first met, and one where she snapped a shot of 4 of them when they had just finished bungee jumping. Some from Weekly Idol with her as the host. And lots of just them all hanging out in the dorms, or her apartment. Needless to say, the leader was speechless while the rest of the group slowly walked up to see what she’d given him. And while he was focused on the photo album, she grabbed something else out of the bag and attached it to the keys hanging a little out of his pocket.
He looked down to see what it was and spotted a friendship keychain that everyone else had found at some point in their bags/boxes at well. “You-You made these for us?” He asked, looking up at her with a frown.
She just grinned and held up her phone, showing 3 different keychains; one for her first best friend’s group K.A.R.D, another for Oneus, and the last for Ateez. “Yeah I made them for you. Do you like them?” She asked hesitantly, hoping they wouldn’t be too mad at her for pretty much bribing them with their gifts.
Seonghwa hugged her and kissed the top of her head, the rest of the group following his actions and hugging her tight. “We love them. Thank you for making these. You really are the best Noona ever.” Seonghwa had muttered against her hairline before they all released her.
Mingi rushed into his room after the hug and came back out with video games in hand, along with board games. “You’re not going anywhere, so get comfortable and pick something!” He shouted for the eldest in the room to hear.
She was about to point out that she didn’t have any clothes when one guy walked up and handed her some of their clothes, winking at her when she was about to ask what he was doing. With a blush on her cheeks that only he could put there, she disappeared into the bathroom to change into the clothes and sighed quietly to herself. The whole thing had gone a little more dramatic than she was hoping, but in the end she was certainly glad she told them first. Who knew how they’d react if they found out the day before she was leaving. Ugh, she didn’t want to think anymore. Time to play some games!

Of Babies and Hockey Mascots
It had been a very long time since the mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers had made Matthew Jones want to scream in fear. He was, after all, a grown man. But being a grown man also meant seeing other adults in his life have kids. And Roland had always been very popular in Philadelphia.
------
This was/is and continues to be exceptionally self-indulgent next gen Blue Line hockey fic. Because life is life and good things happen in this universe. Also because I write them that way. So, here’s like almost 4K of Matt Jones, his girlfriend, his parents and both Roland and Henry ragging on Matt Jones for being terrified of Gritty. And the Rangers play hockey tomorrow. So.
This one goes out directly to @shireness-says for being an absolute, goddamn delight at all times. Also, also @optomisticgirl for constantly letting me bounce ideas off her, @stealing-vengence because I didn’t have these words to send last night and @distant-rose just for, like, existing.
This is the video mentioned in the story.
------
“Babe.”
Matt didn’t answer.
“Babe.”
Nothing. If he didn’t answer, then Claire would definitely go back to sleep and it was stupid and petulant and—“Babe,” she said, that one sounding less like an endearment and more like the audible and understandable sound of middle-of-the-night frustration. She jabbed him in the ribs.
Matt groaned.
“Answer your phone, Matthew.”
He hissed in a breath, burying his face into the pillow like that would make the phone stop, but that was a pipe dream and Claire’s nails absolutely left marks on his skin when she scratched down his side.
“I got it, I got it, I—“
The phone fell on the floor.
“Oh my God,” Claire grumbled.
None of Matt’s muscles appreciated when he leaned over the side of the bed, fingers scrambling for a phone that was somehow still ringing and sounded as if it were getting louder with each passing second and—
“Someone better be dead,” he growled, barely moving his thumb away from the screen after he swiped before lifting it to his ear.
He hadn’t checked who was calling.
That was definitely his first mistake.
Well, second. Maybe third, actually.
He’d gotten hit pretty hard after that turnover in the zone and he should have just started shutting his phone off at night. Like several dozen years earlier. So those probably took precedence.
And the tongue click on the other end made it blatantly obvious who it was anyway.
“No one is dead,” Dad said. “That’s kind of the whole point of this call, actually.”
Matt blinked. Once, twice, three times, probably to match up with the number of mistakes and—he would absolutely blame whatever time it actually was for how long it took him to realize what was going on.
“Oh, shit.”
Dad sighed. And it sounded like Mom laughed.
It must have been nearly three in the morning.
“Got there, huh?” Dad asked. “That was a good pass in the third, by the way. Almost made up for the turnover and—“
“—You do not get to critique my turnovers right now. It is the middle of the night and that was just like…your greatest weakness and—“
“—And not really the point,” Mom called, what sounded like the couch creaking in the background and they must have been in the living room. Waiting. Or something that sounded a little more familial and far less menacing.
“It’s not really the point,” Dad admitted, voice turning a little repentant. “But it was a really good pass, the legend of the wrists continues—“
Mom sounded like she was growling.
There was a quiet scuffle on the other end of the phone, Claire’s laugh working its way under Matt’s skin when she pressed her head into the curve of his shoulder, reaching a hand up to brush away far-too-long curls because they were in the middle of a playoff run and he desperately needed to go back to sleep, but—
“It’s a boy,” Mom announced, and of all the very sore muscles that made up Matt’s current bodily structure, he hadn’t ever really expected his cheeks to ache quite that much.
Or so suddenly.
Smiling like an idiot would do that though.
“Oh, shit.”
“Mattie, you can’t keep saying that over and over. It’s just—it’s not the world’s best reaction.”
“I know, I know, I just—a boy, for real?”
“You knew that,” Claire mumbled, nosing at his collarbone and he could feel her smile too. His stomach felt like it had thrown into his throat.
“Yeah, I know I did, I just—“
“—Used up all those well-thought out responses in post, huh?” Mom asked, and maybe they were all just smiling like idiots. That made him feel a little better.
It had been a really good pass.
“Something like that,” Matt muttered. He ran his fingers through his hair, tugging lightly as if that would wake him up, but the prospect of Roland and Lizzie’s kid had already done a pretty good job of that and Claire only gasped softly when he pulled her up with him. “Is everything—I mean, everything went ok, right? No one’s—“
“Everyone’s fine, kid,” Dad said, clearly on speaker now and that was probably for the best. “Except maybe Liam who—“
“—According to El, snapped at several different orderlies, demanded hourly updates from the nurse and—“
“—Wait, wait,” Matt interrupted. “Hourly? This was a multiple hours thing? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Nothing.
Huh. That was annoying.
“Well,” he prompted, “the resounding echo of your own silence is pretty deafening. Who else was there? Why didn’t Rol call?”
“Presumably because he’s staring at his kid like they’re the greatest thing in the entire world,” Dad said reasonably.
Matt slumped against the pillows. “I’m going to blame the turnover. For, you know—being a dick.”
“Matthew!’
“Mom, you don’t get to ground me anymore, I just—“
“—Henry was there,” Dad finished. “He’d been planning on coming back here, but something about fate or whatever and he got delayed in Atlanta, so he rerouted to Philly and from what Gina said, he was the only rational one and Rol kept walking in and out of the room. Rumor has it there was quite a lot of pinching the bridge of his nose.”
“He does that when he gets nervous.”
“I can’t imagine why he’d feel that way in this scenario.”
“But everything’s ok, right? I mean—with Lizzie and Rol, the nose thing aside and—“
“That’s very normal,” Mom mumbled, another telltale tongue click from Dad and Claire kissed Matt’s shoulder that time. “Some would say even calm compared to other reactions.”
“This is not an answer to my question, just sly jabs at Dad for being a freak and—“
“—I will absolutely ground you, Matthew,” Dad cut in, a distinct lack of any actual frustration. “Also, today is not the season-opener. So, I can’t see how the two situations are even remotely comparable.”
Matt hummed.
Claire might have mumbled something that sounded a hell of a lot like this family is crazy, which—well, fair.
“And,” Mom continued, “I wasn’t really being sly about it. I thought that was a pretty obvious commentary on Dad’s nerves.”
“A name, Mom. Does the kid have a name?”
She hissed in a breath.
And Matt waited. Or, tried. Doing his best to temper his impatience because he was only a little annoyed Henry had been there when he hadn’t and that was absolutely insane.
Seriously, it was all that turnover’s fault.
He hoped Roland hadn’t seen that.
He’d never hear the end of it.
“Mom. Do I have to guess? I’m not going to be able to guess, I—“
“Noah Miller Locksley,” she finished, and Matt nearly dropped the phone again.
He swallowed. More than once, tongue darting between suddenly dry lips because he’d started breathing through his mouth at some point, the way his eyes falling shut having nothing to do with how utterly and completely exhausted he was.
“Oh shit,” Claire whispered. “That’s good.”
Matt made another noise — something he was only vaguely hopeful sounded like an agreement. “Did Aunt Gina cry?”
“She absolutely wept according to several reliable sources,” Dad answered.
“Were those all just Henry?”
“And El. Who told me this while crying rather hard.”
“God, that’s so stupid.”
“In the realm of exceptionally stupid, yeah.”
“Idiot,” Claire mumbled, and it might have just been a trick of the minimal light in their room, but Matt would have sworn her eyes had gone a bit glossy too. He blinked several times.
So as not to also be accused of idiocy.
And Matt’s phone buzzed in his hand.
“There it is,” Mom muttered fondly, Matt’s hand shaking when he glanced down at the screen and a group text that was very active for the middle of the night.
Roland Locksley, 2:47 a.m. :: image attached ::
Noah Miller Locksley. Ten fingers, ten toes. Seven pounds, eight ounces. Far more hair than expected, which we assume means he’s some kind of super baby.
Do not send us hockey sticks, I will punch you all in the face.
Matt scoffed, a quick sniffle and tears on his cheeks that he hadn’t really planned on, but seemed pretty inevitable for the parents of a kid who had absolutely fought over who got to use him on their side of the aisle at their wedding.
Claire kissed his cheek.
He didn’t read the rest of the messages — Peggy sending at least ten in a row and Chris’ didn’t look like much more than the same gif of Roland celebrating a playoff goal four seasons before, Leo’s all just several lines of exclamation points — tugging the phone back up to his ear and his own parents were definitely smiling.
Beaming, probably.
“I’m going to buy that kid so much team-branded merch,” Matt said. “All blue. Only blue.”
Dad chuckled. “I’m sure Roland will genuinely appreciate that.”
“How many hats do you think one hospital goes through with its baby population every day?”
“This is why you answer the questions and don’t ask them, kid.”
“That’s a serious question.”
“Make sure you ask Lizzie that later.”
“Don’t ask Lizzie that later,” Mom countered, and the couch made another noise. “And it really was a good pass in the third.”
“Ah ha! I thought you said that wasn’t the point of the conversation!”
“I mean—not a huge point, but definitely a sidebar and,” her voice dropped low like there wasn’t another person sitting directly next to her, “Dad nearly destroyed the chair when he jumped out of it. So.”
“So?”
“So,” Mom echoed. “Something paternal.”
“Yuh huh.”
“Go back to sleep, Mattie.”
“Sure thing, Mom.”
She one-hundred percent narrowed her eyes at the air in front of her, several dozen blocks away, but Matt still wasn’t all that worried about getting grounded and the small flutter of feeling in the pit of his stomach didn’t disappear when he woke up the next morning.
He only checked one of his text messages.
Dad, 8:15 a.m. The chair would have deserved to get wrecked in celebration of that pass. I’m proud of you, kid.
Matt, 8:17 a.m. Something, something, you’ve got a pretty solid head start on best dad.
Don’t tell Henry I said that.
Dad, 8:18 a.m. The something really made the message. I will not tell Henry.
And it all probably would have been fine — more photos of Noah while he was sleeping and being held and the group text had several thoughts on Roland’s technique when Lizzie sent a video of him rocking their kid back and forth in the middle of the hospital room. But then that same video got several gazillion retweets and likes and Matt had to go to film and skate and he didn’t really forget, but—
“Christ, Jones, is your phone going to explode?”
Matt shook his hair away from his eyes, tossing his practice jersey into the hamper a few feet away and it was a legitimate question. The stupid thing was buzzing and ringing at the same time, wobbling precariously on the top shelf of his locker, like it was getting ready to take flight.
He really needed to start checking who was calling before he answered the phone. Because Henry was already talking.
On video.
“Matt, Matt, Matt, listen, I need you to not check the group text and—“
“—Wait, what? Why do you sound like you’re out of breath?”
“Are you in the locker room?”
“I am in the middle of a series. I have skate and I need to go to PT and—“
“—Go in the hallway.”
“What?”
“The hallway,” Henry repeated, sounding as if he were issuing declarations or possibly grounding his own kids and Matt was twenty-nine. He needed to stop thinking about getting grounded so much. “Now.”
Matt widened his eyes, but Henry’s expression didn’t change, clearly tucked in the corner of a hospital with particularly aggressive overhead lighting.
“Fine, fine,” he grumbled. It only took a few moments, not bothering to grab his sandals when he hadn’t even had time to take his socks off yet, slumping down the wall almost as soon as the sounds from the locker room dimmed behind him. “You look like you’re about to tell me that they’re taking away my assist from last night.”
“That was a ridiculous pass.”
“Ridiculous here, meaning—“
“Good, obviously,” Henry sighed, an obviously exhausted hand running over his face.
“You sleep at all, old man? Where are your kids?”
“At my apartment? With my wife? What kind of question is that?”
“You’re really stressing me out.”
“Did you look at the group text yet?”
Matt shook his head slowly, some of that pleasant fluttering and general good that had made it easier to skate on such sore muscles disappearing. “I get the feeling I should have, though.”
“No, that’s—Matt, that’s the point. I—ok—“
The footsteps that moved down the hallway in a hospital with particularly aggressive overhead lighting in Philadelphia, weren’t all that loud — presumably because he hadn’t gotten much sleep what with having a baby to take care of, but then Matt also felt kind of bad about referring to Noah solely as a baby less than twenty-four hours after he’d been born and Roland looked torn between hysterics and…mostly hysterics.
“Are you kidding me, Matthew?” he balked, sliding down next to Henry slowly enough that it took several moments for him to find his way into the phone frame.
Matt arched an eyebrow.
Henry sighed.
“Seriously, why wasn’t this something I knew about?”
“Should you be out here? Shouldn’t you be like—I don’t know, documenting Noah’s every move or making sure Lizzie is—”
“—Lizzie told him to come out here for reasons we’ll get to that are not my fault,” Henry finished.
Matt’s eyebrows could not get higher.
And Roland rolled his eyes. “Ok, well, thanks for that vote of father-like confidence—“
“I’m not your father, Locksley, that sentence didn’t even make sense.”
“You want to acknowledge how cute my kid is…or?”
“Obviously,” Matt snapped, a weird counterbalance to the way the ends of his mouth tugged up. “He’s a super cute kid. I’m going to buy you twenty hockey sticks that are all legit, pro size.”
“I’m already kind of annoyed with you, so that’s not helping.”
“What could you possibly have to be annoyed with? Aren’t you just, I don’t know, buoyed by emotion and those father-like feelings?”
“Good use of the word buoyed,” Henry mumbled, Matt’s eyes flickering his direction. He still looked a little nervous.
“What’s going on? I feel like I’m missing something.”
“Nah uh,” Roland objected, “you’re the one holding out on us, Matthew. It’s—how do you even play here?”
Matt tilted his head. The fluttering was gone completely, replaced by something that felt like entirely unwelcome dread and he nearly yanked several pieces of hair out of his head when he ran his fingers through it.
Henry grimaced.
“This is not my fault.”
“So you’ve mentioned.”
“I never told.”
“Yuh huh.”
“But, uh—ok, are you by yourself? Because…just maybe look at the group text and see what this stupid team did.”
Roland had to put his hand over his mouth. Presumably so he wouldn’t disturb the other babies. With his laughter.
Matt wondered how long they were required to wear hats.
And it only took a few scrolls back for Roland to find it, brandishing his screen towards Henry’s — the whole phone call almost understandable because Chris had posted the video and he didn’t know, no one really knew, it was a stupid, childlike fear that he’d absolute, positively, shaken as a grown man with a very serious girlfriend he was really considering proposing to at some point and—
“Oh, fuck,” Matt gasped, pushing his arm out like that would stop the video from playing or the goddamn Flyers mascot from moving around so much in said video.
Roland snickered.
Matt squeezed his eyes shut, whatever filler music the Flyers had used in the video sounding impossibly loud. As if it were heightened by his fear
Of goddamn Gritty.
He was decorating a locker — streamers and balloons, every move making his stupid eyes rattle around because the eyes hadn’t changed in years and Matt still hated him with every fiber of his being. As if there were totally normal.
The video didn’t end.
It seemed to last forever, Gritty glancing back at the camera every few seconds — presumably just to remind Matt that his eyes defied the laws of gravity — but then the locker was decorated and the sign said Welcome Baby, Locksley and Matt could not remember the last time he took a deep breath.
Roland had given up on trying to hide his laugh.
“Why did that happen?” Matt hissed, rolling his shoulders like that would make him look more adult or less terrified of another grown adult in a costume. “You’re not even on this team anymore. You are—“
“—A beloved alum, it seems,” Roland alum. “Oh Captain, my captain and all that.”
“Isn’t he dead in that poem?”
“Honestly?”
Matt glanced at Henry, the color in his cheeks nothing do with embarrassment and more with Gritty. “This has taken a pretty morbid turn, don’t you think?”
“Why is the mascot decorating a locker that isn’t yours, Rol?” Matt demanded.
“I’m very popular on this team. Still, or whatever. Plus, you know—the kid is exceptionally cute.”
“God, that’s not fair.”
“Say the kid is cute, Matthew.”
“Obviously I think the kid is cute. God, you are so annoying.”
“Tired,” Henry amended. “He’s tired.”
Roland nodded. “That too. And maybe a little delirious on like—I don’t know, joy? Is that lame?”
“Yes,” Matt nodded “But nice too. Dad said Gina cried.”
“Wept. Seriously. Shoulders shaking, sniffles. It was not dignified at all. Made the whole thing.”
“You’re a giant freak, you know that?”
“Lizzie’s going to call you later, she’s got—“
More footsteps. Those ones with a distinct squeak that came from those very specific shoes nurses wore and the woman smiled when she noticed both Henry and Roland.
On the floor.
“Mrs. Locksley is awake again,” the nurse said, “and, uh—well, she’d like to know why you didn’t wake her up if you were going to—“ Roland’s eyes widened. And Matt laughed that time.
“She wants to know why they’re ragging me about the video without her, isn’t she?” he asked.
The nurse nodded.
“Maybe I should just ask her to marry me again,” Roland mused. “That’s romantic, right?”
“I mean the kid was a pretty good sign that you were into your own wife, honestly.”
“True, true, c’mon. I bet she’s got scathing opinions.”
She did. For several straight minutes, a gurgling Noah resting across her chest and that didn’t do much to stop Lizzie’s right hand from flying through the air while she talked.
Matt chewed on his lower lip.
“What I can’t understand,” Roland mused, slumped in one of the few chairs the hospital room seemed to offer, “is why we didn’t know you were so terrified of the mascot? You play here all the time.”
“Never came up.”
“Matt.”
“What? When would I have told you that? And would that not have ended with you trying to get me to run into the stupid thing every time was at Wells Fargo?”
“Eh, yeah, that’s probably true.”
“It’s one-hundred percent true,” Henry said.
“And how did you know, exactly?”
“Oh, I’ve known forever. Matt was—I don’t know, little, little. Like a baby and Killian was on the road in Philly and he lost his mind when Gritty came on TV. Just one of those fundamental fears, I guess.”
“Is that a thing?”
“See,” Matt challenged, “we shouldn’t be talking about that stupid monster because then you’re going to mess your kid up after less than a day.”
Lizzie glared at him. “You’re a jerk.”
“I’m only going to buy you Rangers gear.”
“Please, you’re going to take it from the team store.”
“Eh, column A, column B.”
“Still stealing,” Roland muttered, head lolling back.
“Whatever. Go to sleep. I’ve got to go back to the locker room and acknowledge PT and—“
“—A will yell at you if you blow that off,” Lizzie interrupted, her own eyelashes fluttering and Henry was already moving towards the door. “Just, you know, on principle.”
“I know, that’s why I’m trying to end this conversation with you.”
“Charmer.”
“Mmhm, hey you want to know a secret?”
Lizzie cracked open one eye. Noah was definitely already asleep. And still as cute as ever. “Did you cry?”
“How’d you know that?”
“Please,” she scoffed. “I know everything about you.”
“You did not know about Gritty.”
“I knew there was a reason you hated being on the ice for too long during warmups here. And it wasn’t that hard to put two and two together. Who do you think told Henry the message was in the group chat?”
“You were reading the group chat?”
“It was a genuinely insane pass last night. You guys going to win tomorrow?”
“An attempt will certainly be made.”
Lizzie laughed, soft and obviously exhausted, a heaviness to her that hadn’t been there before, but wasn’t altogether bad. Almost like she was more…something. Good. Protective. Maybe even understanding.
“I will probably fall asleep during the game,” she warned.
“Ah, well, you did just have a kid, so…”
“Exactly.”
A voice called for him from the other end of the hall, one side of Lizzie’s mouth ticking up when she slumped further into the hospital bed. “Score the kid a goal, huh?”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
He did. In the third period. A quick stick and impossibly fast wrists, no mascot in New York to terrorize infants and Matt grinned when Claire found him outside the locker room later that night, a bag with a Rangers onesie clutched in her hand.

What Happens in Bali...
There are certain announcements you just shouldn’t make on April Fools day.
A/N: Fluff. Very light mention of smutty happenings.
Words: 4033
It was only half past three in the afternoon and Alex had already had one hell of a day.
For starters, she’d woken up late only to trip over Shawn’s guitar case on her way out of the bedroom. A stubbed toe wasn’t enough to ruin her day but instead it was her husband she cursed under her breath as she grasped the handle of the guitar case. How many times had she begged him to stop dropping his shit in the most inconvenient places? There was an entire room in their home devoted to his guitars so why in the world did he insist on leaving it outside of the bedroom door where she was bound to stumble over it? Frustrated, she’d picked up the case to move it to its rightful place just for the lid to fall open and Shawn’s favorite guitar to spill to the ground. It smacked the ground with a loud thud, the neck broken off at a right angle, narrowly holding on by the strings. “No no no no…” She whimpered to herself, kneeling down to scoop up the broken instrument. As she immediately pictured herself packing a bag and driving off into the sunset to avoid admitting she busted his most prized possession, Shawn rounded the corner.
“Honey, where’s the-” He stopped dead in his tracks the second his eyes fell on the guitar, his jaw going slack. “Oh god, what did you do?”
Her panicked eyes met his as she scrambled to her feet. “I’m sorry, it was an accident! You left it right in the doorway, I tried to move it and I don’t think you even latched the case shut…” Alex chewed on her lip, carefully picking up the neck of the guitar with shaky hands. “Maybe we can put it back together?”
Rubbing his jaw with his face turned towards the ceiling, he stood in silence, seemingly trying to filter whatever it was he wanted to say. After a long pause, a deep and frustrated sigh escaped him. “It’s one of a kind, custom made. The one Mayer gave me. It can’t be fixed or replaced.” The disappointment in his voice ate away at her, as much as she wanted to remind him it really wasn’t her fault to begin with. No matter who was to blame, something incredibly meaningful to him was irreparably damaged and her heart broke for him.
Letting the pieces drop gently back to the ground, Alex rose to her feet and pulled Shawn’s hands into hers. A more sincere apology was working its way to her lips when she felt a small hand on her calf. Glancing down, her gaze was met by little brown curls and doe eyes that matched her own. “Good morning, Matty.” Reaching down to pick up their two-year-old son before he could touch any jagged pieces of splintered wood, she notices his eyes focused on Shawn. Almost looking for…reassurance? Shawn mouthed something back to the toddler, although Alex couldn’t quite make it out.
“Apwil Foos, Mama.” Matty’s sleepy voice finally announced, his head still on a swivel between Alex and Shawn. For a minute, she was totally lost trying to interpret toddlerese. That is until the deep frown on Shawn’s face stretched into a devious grin, his fist reaching out to Matty for one of their father/son fist bumps. It’s then that it dawned on her…it’s April 1st. How in the world did she not see straight through this ruse? She was literally on her way to the kitchen to cover cherry tomatoes in chocolate as her own April Fool’s joke. She should have immediately guessed that this whole broken guitar act was her husband’s way of beating her to the punch. Putting her palm on one of Matty’s ears and leaning his head into her shoulder to cover the other one, she narrowed her eyes at Shawn. “You asshole,” She hissed, quiet but sharp. “That was so mean! I was freaking out!” Seeing the all too pleased look on his face didn’t help matters and it took all of her energy not to give him a swift kick in the shin. Looking back down at the pieces again, it now occurred to her how cheap and flimsy the wood looked and how light it had been in her hands. That little shit had a cheap replica made just to send her on a guilt spiral.
“The look on your face? Priceless.” Shawn didn’t even try to hold back his laughter, which only got his little shadow started too. Matty always wanted to be in on every joke, even though he rarely understood what was happening. It was next to impossible for Alex to stay angry while surrounded by the laughter of her boys, but she wasn’t going to let Shawn get away with it so easily.
“Laugh it up,” She raised her eyebrows and shot him a frosty grin, pushing Matty into his arms. “I’ll get my revenge. Just wait.” Their prank wars had only escalated over the years and April Fool’s Day was the ultimate challenge considering they were usually each on high alert. Last year, she’d convinced him that he’d leaked naked photos of her which culminated in him trying to schedule an emergency conference call with his entire team at five in the morning. Two years ago, he’d fooled her with what turned out to be a fake (and incredibly unflattering) tattoo of her face on his back. Point being, she would never have had her guard down had it not been first thing in the morning before she’d fully cleared the sleep from her eyes.
“Oh, you mean those tomatoes you hid in the back of the fridge?” The look on Shawn’s face couldn’t have been more smug. “You’re going to have to try harder than that. I don’t think you’re going to get me this year.” Hoisting Matty to sit on one of his shoulders, he glanced up at his giggling son. “You’ve made your Mom lose her edge, buddy. She used to be so good at pranks, now your Dad is the master. If you’re lucky, I’ll teach you the art of deception.”
“You absolutely will not teach our child how to deceive us.” Alex rolled her eyes, hard, watching nervously as Matty leaned a little too far backwards on Shawn’s shoulder. Thankfully, Shawn had this eerie sixth Dad sense where he always managed to catch Matty by the shirt or an ankle before he totally wiped out. This time it was an ankle, Matty laughing his head off as he hung backwards over Shawn’s shoulder. It took a minute or two for Alex’s heart to start beating again (did a toddler really need to be 6+ feet off the ground??) and she reached out to peel her son off of his father and bring him back into the safety of her arms.  “Consider that, Shawn. He’ll be sixteen and joyriding in your car before you know it and it’s not going to be my fault.”
Shawn contemplated this, knowing his wife had a really, really good point. Matty had an endless supply of energy and it probably wasn’t the best idea to teach him how to use it to mess with them. He’d likely do enough of that on his own. “Fair enough. Sorry, bud.” Engulfing his little family in his arms, he planted a kiss on each forehead. “Happy April Fool’s Day, good luck getting me back.”
This earned yet another eyeroll from Alex, but her head was already swimming with ideas for vengeance. Could she have his car towed while he was at the studio that afternoon? No, too obvious. Convince him her parents were fighting and her Mom was coming to stay with them indefinitely? No, too frightening. Was he right about her losing her edge? Had she lost her special touch at taunting and tormenting her husband? No way, she’d come up with something. She had to. “Just give me a real kiss and clean up this dumb guitar before I send the real one off the balcony.”
His eyebrows shot up at her threat, but they both knew it was completely empty.  “You would never.” Leaning in, he brushed his lips against hers teasingly, still withholding the kiss she’d demanded. “You love me too much.” This was true, he had her there.
“Maybe so, but all is fair in love, war, and April Fools.” She grumbled back, using her free hand to wrap in the hair at the back of his head, pulling him all the way in for her morning kiss.
Alex had spent the better part of the morning running errands, hoping for divine inspiration to strike her when she least expected it. So far? No luck. Taking Matty into the grocery store probably wasn’t the best idea, considering it took every ounce of her mental strength. Making it through the supermarket with Matty was as close as she would ever get to playing an extreme sport. Whether it was scooping him up seconds before he’d pulled out the bottom box of a display of goldfish crackers or wrangling him off of the top shelf he’d managed to climb up in the cereal aisle, she was pretty sure she could cancel her gym membership and create her own CrossFit style fitness program based entirely on chasing toddlers around public places. A woman with two small children passed by her, one crying about the flavor of jam they’d picked and the other swiping an entire shelf of toothpaste into the cart as she shared a knowing look with the frazzled mother. The tight but soft smile they shared was the equivalent of throwing a Mom gang sign to show their support for one another. As they passed out of view, Alex stared down at Matty. “I think you’re going to be an only child, sir.” She wasn’t sure if it was the smug look that he shot her (and god damn, why did he have to look just like his Dad?) or the fact that she was passing a wall of pregnancy tests, but the thought hit her like a ton of bricks. Bali. Fucking Bali.
When she insisted over and over that she didn’t want anything for her birthday other than to go out for brunch and whatever trinket Matty could make her out of dried macaroni, that hadn’t satisfied Shawn. But Alex just wasn’t the materialistic type, not to toot her own horn or anything. She’d just never been a big fan of jewelry, she was the queen of thrifting and had a penchant for vintage clothing versus whatever Hermès or Saint Laurent was peddling, and other than her phone, what electronics did she really need? Travel, though, that was her Achilles heel. She could never say no to a trip, would bend over backwards if it meant making an adventure happen. Of course, Shawn was well aware of this weakness. Thus, what she thought was a ride to her birthday brunch was really a ride to drop Matty off with Shawn’s parents before catching a flight. To Bali. The number one destination on her bucket list.
Being that it was a last minute, spur of the moment trip, she hadn’t put a lot of thought into packing her bag. In fact, Shawn’s exact words had been, “Yyou have thirty minutes to pack before we leave for the airport, sorry.” Thus, there were several things she’d forgotten. One, her cell phone charger. No big deal, she’d use Shawn’s. Two, sneakers suitable for hiking. Not a problem, she could pick up a pair when they got to Ubud. Three, her birth control. Yeah, that one was an issue. It wasn’t like this was just a trip to LA where she could pop into any CVS pharmacy and grab an emergency supply of her super specific birth control prescription. It was a ten-day trip. To Indonesia. And it wasn’t like she was going to just…not have birthday sex with her husband in one of the most beautiful villas she’d ever seen in the most breathtaking place she’d ever been.
They had mutually agreed to wait another couple of years before giving Matty a sibling. Shawn had an impending tour starting later that year and neither of them could imagine trying to manage two little ones on the road. Ever since Matty was born, they’d decided that he and Alex would travel along with Shawn whenever possible. It wasn’t always realistic and it was rarely easy, but it kept them together and that was all that mattered. Before they’d even decided to try for Matty, they’d swore to one another they’d give him as fulfilling of a childhood as they could. To them, fulfilling meant creating memories for Matty he could look back on fondly later, shared with both of his parents and surrounded by love. So no, it wouldn’t be a normal childhood by any definition. Matty’s first steps had been on a moving tour bus. His first word had been in Spanish while they were at a café in Buenos Aires. He’d already seen more of the world in his short two years than most people saw in a lifetime. But Alex wouldn’t have it any other way. Yes, it was difficult to calm a teething baby in a different hotel room every night or to find something akin to Cheerios in a foreign country when that’s the only thing Matty would eat. Yes, there were nights that she wanted nothing more than to tuck Matty into his own bed rather than a green room pack and play. However, those things paled in comparison to her son getting to see his Dad every day. To be there to catch him after those first steps. To spin him around in celebration after that first word. To make him laugh, to wipe his tears, to just simply be there. All of that being said, it wasn’t impossible to do with one child. But adding another to that mix? It just wasn’t something Alex was ready to do.
Yet that didn’t stop her from letting Shawn push her up against the shower wall in Bali, thrusting into her as the warm water cascaded over their joined bodies. She’d mentioned to him after unpacking that she’d forgotten to pack the pill and maybe they should pick up some condoms. It was one of those suggestions they both nodded over with no intention of actually accomplishing. And within twenty minutes, there they were having risky shower sex with reckless abandon. After that, their shared mindset was that the damage was done and they might as well enjoy their trip unencumbered. It wasn’t like Matty happened the FIRST time they had completely unprotected sex, so the chances that a ten-day vacation would totally derail their two-year plan didn’t seem likely.
But now, as she sits on the edge of the tub waiting for not one, not two, but three pregnancy tests to reveal their results, Alex can’t help but feel incredibly foolish over their tropical fueled heedlessness. Deep in her thoughts as Matty sits on the floor in front of her, ramming a toy firetruck into her ankles and driving it up and down her calves, she lets out a long sigh. Bali Alex™ really hadn’t had future Alex in mind when she insisted on having sex on every surface of that villa, sans goalie. The simultaneous sounds of the front door creaking open, Matty’s feet scurrying out of the bathroom, and her cell phone alarm blaring to announce the moment of truth yank her out of her thoughts and bring her back to reality. A reality where there were a total of six pink lines in front of her. Well…she does love adventure, doesn’t she?
There’s no sense in making a big production out of it, so she simply marches out into the kitchen with all three positive tests clenched in her hand. Matty is already there, perched on the kitchen counter eating what appears to be rocky road ice cream. She grimaces at the sight, knowing the sugar rush to come considering she’d already caved and given him gummy worms at the supermarket. “I come bearing ice cream for Matty and wine for Mommy, since I’ve been feeling incredibly guilty all day.” Shawn holds up her favorite bottle of red, two glasses already waiting on the counter.
“Hold that thought, oh, maybe for the next eight months.” Alex sidles up to the counter, grabbing one of Shawn’s hands so that should could place all three tests into his palm. “Three of a kind, Mendes.” The look on his face as he stares down into his palm quickly changes from confusion to shock and then…amusement? He hands the tests right back to her, shaking his head in the process.
“Whoa, you’re pulling out the big guns, eh?” Now the look of confusion transfers to her face. “Not gonna work, Alex.” What? It’s not like she expects him to pick her up and spin her around or anything (okay, maybe she does), but this really isn’t the reaction she’d expected. What the hell was he even talking about? And then, for the second time that day, it hits her. April Fools Day.
“Wait…you think this is an April Fools joke?” Her eyes nearly double in size, an incredulous laugh leaving her chest. “This is the absolute worst thing you can joke about on April Fools, I would never.” She truly wouldn’t. There were certain topics that were just off limits when it came to pranks and this was possibly the biggest one. Yes, she could be ruthless when she wanted to be, but she’d never cross this line.
“That’s what you want me to think.” Shaw’s guard is still up, eyes raking over her to pick up any sign that points to her lying. He knows her tells. The way she always looks up through her eyelashes. The way she always drops one hip, trying to look calm and collected. He can read her like a book. But right now…she must be putting on the performance of a lifetime. Because the tone of her voice sounds a little too earnest, the look in her eyes a little too disconcerted. He’s ready to cave, about to pull her into his arms, until the memory of the prior April 1st fills his head. The one where her voice had been quaking and her skin burning red as she showed him risqué photos of her he had supposedly leaked. He remembers how quickly that quake turned into a belly laugh and how she’d done a victory lap around their bedroom declaring herself winner of April Fools. Nope. She must be desperate to one up his prank and she was just going to the greatest length she could. “You waited for it to become socially unacceptable and THEN you strike. Classic Alex, you almost got me.”
“Okay, so how did I fake these positive pregnancy tests then? You think I’m out running around stealing pee from pregnant ladies?” She’d folded her arms against her chest, eyebrows raised to challenge him.
“I don’t know, you can probably buy fake ones on the internet or something.” He finds this completely plausible, shoulders shrugging as he steals a bite of ice cream from Matty’s dish. If he could get a cheap replica guitar made with ease, why couldn’t she figure out how to fake a pregnancy test? “Wait, does this go all the way back to Bali? Were you already setting me up then?” The scoff this earns from her feels like it further proves his suspicion. To him, it seems as though she’s laying it on too thick.
“You are going to feel so stupid when this kid shoots out,” Alex laughs softly to herself, reaching up to brush non-existent salt off of his shoulder. “And I’m never going to let you forget it.”
It’s still dark when she wakes to his fingers running softly down the skin of her back. As her eyes slowly flutter open, she sees the red numbers on the alarm clock reading 12:01am. She knows exactly why he’s still up and why he’s tugging her from sleep. “Mmm, you just been laying awake waiting for the clock to strike midnight?” At the sound of her voice, his hand snakes around her waist to pull her backwards against him, her bare skin pressing against his.
“Yes.” He momentarily buries his face in her hair, taking in her scent, waiting with bated breath to hear what she’s ultimately going to say. To see which direction their lives are about to go. “This isn’t a prank, is it?” His fingers ghost across her flat stomach, tracing circles and shapes that give her goosebumps.
“What are you hoping to hear?” She shifts on to her back so that they can lock eyes, the mixture of fear and excitement reflecting between them. But the fact that the excitement outweighs the fear calms the endless train of thoughts surging through her head.
“I’m hoping I was wrong.” His hand stills, as he takes in every detail he can. The freckle under her right eye, the curve of her hip, the way her chest rose and fell with every breath. She places a hand on top of his, threading their fingers together.
“As always, I’m happy to tell you that you were wrong.” A soft giggle floats from her but it’s quickly captured by his lips. Despite the fact that they’re wholly unprepared, despite the fact that this derails their plans, this kiss is filled with relief. Relief that they have one another to navigate life with, come what may.
When the need for air finally becomes too much, their lips part, foreheads resting against each other in quiet satisfaction. He brushes his thumb across her stomach once more, a smile spreading across his face. “Our Bali baby.”
“We can’t call her that, we’d have to start calling Matty our “backseat of the Jeep baby” and I think he might resent that.” Yes, she’s boldly calling this baby her. She can’t say why, but she has a pretty good feeling about it.
“Backseat of the Jeep? No way, that’s not where Matty was made.” He rolls on to his back, pulling her half way on top of him. He knows it has to be too early and maybe it’s just the moonlight streaming through the window, but he swears she’s already glowing.  “Bathroom of the AMA’s.”
“Oh, okay sure, that’s MUCH more poetic.” She swears her eyes are going to hurt from rolling so often in a twenty-four hour period. “We get one trip to ourselves and what do your dumbasses do? Make another baby.” She hides her face in his chest, but he can still feel that grin of hers.
“Happy Birthday?” It comes out as a chuckle as he reaches to pull her body up further so that her face hangs over his. “I mean, are we really that shocked? We knew this could happen, we did literally nothing to prevent it. I don’t want to speak for you, but I think we wanted to let this happen?” They weren’t the type of couple that sat down and made long lists weighing the pros and cons of every decision. They were more of an “I jump, you jump” couple that just took life as it came and went for the ride. So it wasn’t unnatural that this is how they’d end up adding to their family – by exploiting a mistake like forgotten birth control and silently letting fate take it’s course. Or maybe that was just an incredibly refined way of making an excuse for the fact that they were stubborn about wanting raw sex on vacation, no matter the consequence.  Either way, everything would work out. They both knew that without a shadow of a doubt.
“I think maybe we did.” Alex admits, bumping her nose against his before stealing another kiss. Her teeth close teasingly against his bottom lip, pulling it lightly. “But really I just wanted to get rawed on vacation, let’s be honest.”

James & Ava
James: [okay so we all know the mood is that he sees whatever she's posted and literally goes there immediately with no thought of who else could also be cos he NEEDS to check that she's alright. The drama of it all] Ava: [but luckily no one is there and she'd be so shocked but also grateful 'cos no one wants to be alone and feeling unwell, esp. not in hospital] James: [when he'd have to say he was her brother so he can take her #awkward] Ava: [lollol finding that more amusing than you would otherwise 'cos concussion breaking your awks] James: [oh she'd be so cute I can't] Ava: [just hugging him so hard] James: [we all need that moment but sadly it cannot last forever because he'd have some driver doing circles endlessly cos there's nowhere to park at hospitals ever] Ava: [seriously, and it's so expensive] James: [when you were so desperate to get in there you didn't think about how long it could have taken like she could've been admitted and that driver is just lowkey out there for the rest of time] Ava: [lmao i wonder how long he'd wait for that bag before getting bored, luckily they'd low-key be ready to get rid 'cos too busy and overcrowded] James: [practically pushing her out the door as soon as they saw someone show up for her so he doesn't even have time to give her a feelsy speech lol] James: [just help her out to the car boy, you've had a lot of practice with drunk girls in heels and it'd be the same vibe] Ava: [just saying thank you over and over] James: [meanwhile he's asking her if she's okay over and over like every step they trying to take here] Ava: ['Oh God, you must think I'm so stupid, I swear, they came out of nowhere'] James: ['We both know you're not stupid, Ava' shout out to that text cleverness 5ever tbh 'I'm just glad you weren't seriously hurt'] Ava: ['How have you been, I've been so worried' shoutout to this concussion giving me shameless freedom lol] James: [when you can only shake your head because 1. you ain't been good 2. you don't wanna tell her any of it and 3. you don't think you deserve her worry/ want her to worry about you] Ava: [sad face] James: [stopping to stroke said face, don't fall over girl, he's got you] Ava: ['James-' and then just looking 'cos what can you say] James: [looking back at her cos likewise but then you gotta drop them eyes cos so sad] Ava: ['you look tired' and making more of an actual effort to get into this car] James: ['I am tired' but helping her in and doing her seatbelt for her because not gonna see her struggle ever, telling the driver her address because there's nowhere else you can take her but home even though you have no idea if as soon as you get there someone is gonna show up for her and you obviously don't want that] Ava: [patting your shoulder like 'you can come sleep' like no no one can babe] James: ['no' but a little smile cos she's cute af 'I'm supposed to keep you awake'] Ava: [when you make a face like 😏] James: ['by which, of course, I mean, you've got a 8 hour date with Edward Cullen ahead of you'] Ava: [grinning like a fool but then being like, wait 'you'll stay though, can you?'] James: ['I'm not going to leave you alone' oh the heavy unspoken implication that she might not be if the friends or fam descend 💔] Ava: [resting your head on him as a silent thank you but then lifting it like 'so awake, promise'[ James: [stroking her hair and keeping an eye like] Ava: [being like let me tell YOU a story and honestly God knows but it'd be cute and she'd be trying to match his storyteller energy] James: [when that's lowkey the moment he falls in love with her bye] Ava: [asking the driver to play the new moon soundtrack] James: [loling and honestly when was the last time he did that, we all know it was when they were together] Ava: [live the emo life and love it babes] James: [he's GOTTA dance in his seat to keep her awake, no other reason #notanerd lol] Ava: [just clapping and cheering him on like nothing to see here driver God bless] James: [so not what that man was expecting to 👀 or 👂] Ava: [freaking out drivers is low-key a fave] James: [the one time you're happy about London traffic tbh] Ava: [even though we ain't gonna interrupt, you don't know that boy] James: [speaking of, probably send a text or something to check on the kids because you just ran like assumedly they at their grandparents but] Ava: [never leaving 'em with Chlo we all know] James: [lord her and Jay would kill each other] Ava: [I'd genuinely be worried for her safety so don't blame you remotely boy, least her parents are invested] James: [literally though & you can have those grandparents forever babs we ain't taking them away from you] Ava: [awkward that your mum never shows but that's just that on that] James: [lbr that's for the best stick with your dads kiddos] Ava: [we all know it, even if Matty might not end up remembering much] James: [Ava lowkey her mum now oops] Ava: [and Jay's actual auntie...lol what a tangled web we weave boo] James: [at least they can all stay connected] Ava: [true facts] James: [makes my heart happy even if it's weird] Ava: [lean in to how weird this family is James] James: [they weird af but they're better than the one he's got #noshadetoTeddythough] Ava: [all the shade to you Chlo, sort it out] James: [her poor future children & husband] Ava: [honestly, good luck] James: [he'd have to be about everything she is or else what the fuck] James: [anyway we've been sidetracked get to Baze's house you two] Ava: [movie marathon awaits, what else do we vibe or shall we just try and see what comes out, like] James: [let's just run with it and see what happens because we extra and anything could be said and done tbh] James: [imagine how awkward it'd be when they get there because he'd have to send her in first and just be shitting himself in the car like is anyone there or no] Ava: [at least you know full well no one is there 'cos business trips forever so you're just at the door shaking your head and doing the 'come on' gesture] James: [he'd just help her to the sofa like immediately & get her blankets and pillows and painkillers (even though it wouldn't touch a concussion headache) and a phone charger and everything else she could possibly need cos Chloe's got him trained like a dog] Ava: [low-key pulling at him, gently, like boy sit down] James: [when you are then looking at her like what did I forget/ do wrong before you realise] Ava: [squeezing his hand because you can only say thank you so many times, putting the film on but then pausing and gasping so dramatically 'coffee, I promised you coffee' and going to get up like can you be careful please] James: [thinking she's in pain or something because of that gasp so being at her side like 0-1000 and slowing her down cos they can do it together thank you] Ava: [making a face at herself like ffs when she catches on 'I'm not trying to age you' and touching his non-grey hair and wrinkles like totally necessary yep] James: ['but you're offering me coffee, what's next red meat or red wine?' but no actual shade cos we both know he doesn't care and none of that is what's aging him anyway, taking her hand from his face and gently kissing said hand before handholding to lead her to her own kitchen like let's do this] Ava: ['I don't know where my cigarettes are' shrugs and smiles like sorry not sorry, smiles even harder but lowkey stops breathing when, kissing ontop of where he just kissed her hand, then getting to this all-singing all-dancing coffee machine 'you have to pick the most daring option, one you've never, ever tried before, okay?' and waggling her finger like so serious about this] James: [takes his own cigarettes out of his pocket and slides the pack over to her 'okay' and does pick, really concentrating on the decision even though there'd be so much shit he hasn't tried and we all know he could just pick option 1 and be done] Ava: [takes one out and puts it behind her ear for later 'cos no need to light up in your parents home, just watching him 'cos so cute and then nodding like yes, good choice and picks the same, setting up this machine 'cos they're always more confusing and/or time-consuming than they need to be I swear] James: [where's the lie you gotta have the knack I swear, his turn to watch her now though because she's beautiful doing anything ever and he missed her so bad] Ava: [ahh coffee goodtimes forever] James: [he needs it cos he is tired af so thanks Ava you babe] Ava: ['do we talk about what happened, or do we write it off?' when you just saying this casually whilst waiting for your coffees] James: ['I don't know' because he is genuinely torn between wanting to and also not] Ava: ['Wait and see how we feel' 'cos no rush or pressure here 'you better carry these though' 'cos we don't need burns as well ty] James: ['wait here a minute for me' because carries the drinks through and then comes back for her because why not carry her though as well obvs] Ava: [does and loves it 'I've missed you, you know'] James: ['I know now' just giving her 😍 casually 'I've missed you too'] Ava: [😍 right back 'Ask anyone' when you're talking about your mood but you realize that sounds like you been telling the world lol 'I mean, I've been a delight' 🙄] James: [when you shake your head like no it's okay 'I overreacted about your cousin, I'm sorry' takes a deep breath remembering that whole sad ending moment 'And I'm sorry for fucking up the start of your summer' because she loves it and he knows] Ava: ['I understand why, understood, whatever. And I am still sorry, I was just too excited and-' sighs like, you know, squeezing his hand again 'I promise, that's all sorted now though' 'cos clearly told her it's over by now, 'cos thought it was anyway; she nods like thanks but shrugs like it's okay too, don't worry 'Sure even I can't be grumpy in the Seychelles, like'] James: [blatantly almost kissing her because he understands the whole being too highkey thing because he was (*cough* is) too but doesn't because she's going away 'when are you going?'] Ava: [sad face like you didn't just say you aren't gonna be grumpy 'when my parents get back, couple of days'] James: [strokes her face again like he did earlier 'you'll feel better by then' because someone's meant to watch you for 48 hours actually NHS website says] Ava: [😈 me 😇 her looking at him 'how did you even- why- I-' continuously cutting herself off 'cos you know he was checking in on you now and you know he came without hesitating so it doesn't need to be said 'Oh, James'] James: ['Ava' saying her name with SO MUCH feeling that I cannot 'I had to' when you mean so many things by that like you had to go but you have to stay now and you had to make sure she was okay today but also you had to keep checking on her the whole time] Ava: [definitely gonna go in to kiss him can't stop that soz] James: [we all know it was only a matter of time and that this is gonna turn into a not at all casual make out session] Ava: [you honestly deserve it lads] James: [that coffee gonna be cold and they won't even notice] Ava: [the movies are also not being watched lmao but no one cares rn] James: [on pause forever sorry not sorry] James: [but eventually like after AN AGE one of them should lean on the remote or whatever so it starts playing and they're like wtf] Ava: [when you shit yourself like who is here but then loving 'cos hi Edward] James: [we all shitting ourselves and all loling] Ava: ['he's very possessive' no lie] James: [looking at Edward and then kissing her again like when you're trying to make someone jealous] Ava: [when you're loling too hard into his mouth like 'scuse me] James: [kissing her neck instead so she can have her adorable lol] Ava: [reacting to that in a v different way] James: [we back at it again at krispy kreme soz twilight saga] Ava: [i swear to god the ily curse is so real] James: [this always happens to us, don't talk for a bit lads, wink wonk] Ava: [its because we give them such high-pressure situations but yes, you should fully hook up 'cos haven't yet] James: [I wonder if the orgasm headache thing would work for a concussion one or not] Ava: [my boo says #experiment] James: [imma google it but I don't expect an answer] James: [nobody is telling me but if it can help a migraine I don't see why it wouldn't] Ava: [you'll be fine bitch, just a shameless excuse that he needs to hang around longer] James: [we should totally also do the shameless thing when he falls asleep and then wakes up immediately but is like oh no how long was I asleep because not only worried about her we know] Ava: [for sure, just there chilling like 🥰 'not long, but you looked peaceful'] James: ['I was' and more 😍 'I am' just snuggling happily because deserved af] Ava: [kissing the top of his head 'good' then lying down and snuggling harder 'I'm so glad you're here, that you're okay'] James: ['I'm glad that I'm here & that you're okay' kissing her forehead and holding her so tightly because he was so worried that something much worse had happened to her] Ava: ['It was kinda scary how much I missed you- like I said I WAS extra but I think, no, I still am, I can't lie to you'[ James: [when you are just falling so hard for her rn smiling like look at this perfect 😇 'you don't have to miss me any longer, minus however long you're spending in the Seychelles, of course'] Ava: ['Yeah?' trying but failing not to sound so hopeful 'And two weeks, so not as long as it has been, not that I was definitely counting or anything'] James: ['I was afraid, no, I am afraid but very few things have ever scared me as much as when I saw you were in hospital & I thought-'] Ava: [just holding him back even tighter like you could not be closer 'I'm so sorry I scared you, I won't ever do it again, even if I get hit by something more substantial than a 90lbs mum on a lightweight bike' and shaking her head with a lil lol 'cos it is funny even though it can be as bad as a car crash actual sometimes] James: ['You scare me in the best ways, you don't have to stop, I don't want you to' because think of the new things he's already done and the new things he's already felt, it makes me emosh goodbye] Ava: [when that's the hottest thing you've ever heard like 'scuse me round two] James: [you've actually got all night for once so make the most of it lads] Ava: [like literally no one needs it more than him so I'm allowing it, there's enough shit happened, happening and still to come] James: [amen to that] Ava: [happy bubble forever] James: [if only like, he is NOT gonna wanna leave in the morning but maybe we could say that like Jay has a playdate with friends or something cos soz babe you can't keep a secret so he just gets the baby and comes back] Ava: [that would be a moment] James: [just casually meet each other how cute] Ava: [have a normal, happy day like you're meant to oh] James: [you all deserve it truly] Ava: [meet your potential future stepchild babe] James: [do we wanna have them go out or stay in?] Ava: [🤔 obvs really want them to go to Kensington Park 'cos Peter Pan and like obvs I doubt anyone who would be bothered to report to Chloe is gonna be there but it is risky so maybe save it idk] James: [we will bookmark that for the future because MUST but they could take Frank on a walk somewhere cos we ain't referenced that sweet sir even if it's just through the streets like] Ava: [that's a good shout, you better be a good boy lol] James: [and don't cockblock them rn please] James: [they'd look like a little fam, I am FINE] Ava: [and lowkey behave more like one in one day like the bar is so low tah Chlo] James: [the scolding tea] James: how are you feeling? Ava: 😊 So happy Ava: Only a bit tired from the whole staying awake thing and you keeping me awake, like 😏 Ava: oh, and Frank said you've redeemed yourself so well done there too Ava: how're you and the girls? James: I'm happy to hear all of that James: has your dizziness gone? James: we're fine, but tired too Ava: Yeah Ava: barely a headache Ava: and my parents get in early AM so I should be all set to go when they do get here James: how much packing is there left to do? Ava: All of it but deciding which 14 bikinis I wanna take shouldn't take too long James: are you sure? I think it would take me a really long time to decide Ava: I'll put some stories up Ava: You can help me Ava: I reckon I need your clearly more considered opinion James: of course you do James: you wouldn't want to spend the entirety of your holiday wishing you'd chosen differently Ava: so true Ava: especially as I'm not allowed to pack my pout James: everyone is well aware of how important the pursuit of a tan is to you, darling, anything that jeopardises that, well, it's bound to be very pout inducing James: you'll be forgiven Ava: I don't know if my family is as forgiving as you Ava: perhaps they don't like my pout as much Ava: they definitely aren't as supportive in bikini related decision making James: I'll dedicate paragraphs to both James: multiple lengthy ones Ava: It'll seem gratuitous in the movie but nothing is too much for the book James: as long as it remains included in the director's cut James: or else I will be devastated Ava: I'll demand it in my contract Ava: I think it'll be a first in favour of taking your clothes off instead of keeping 'em on James: thank you James: you do deserve a multitude of firsts, honestly Ava: you deserve so much Ava: much more than I'm allowed to give you Ava: that reminds me Ava: as I can't give you anything as a thank you, I've had to get creative James: so much of what I deserve is negative & there is nothing you owe to me in any capacity, thanks included James: but I'd never want to discourage creativity Ava: Shh sh Ava: in the spirit of firsts and trying new things Ava: when you're all less worn out, go to [a sassy but kid-friendly cafe/restaurant that's a bit out there and exotic and definitely nowhere Chloe has ever made you take her] and tell 'em you're eating on me, yeah Ava: then when I get back and you're free, you're coming over and I'm cooking James: Ava Ava: It's already arranged, I go there all the time, it's the 2nd best Brazilian food I've had James: you've been to Brazil for the 1st, haven't you? I can tell Ava: Actually no, mores the pity Ava: but my Uncle is Brazilian and a chef, my cousin too Ava: having a big weird family has unexpected perks Ava: if you like it, I already have a recipe lined up that's meant to be 🔥 but even a novice like me can master it James: you'll have to wait patiently for my review because I regrettably can't send you a picture of my face after the 1st mouthful to serve as one, but okay Ava: I'll do my best Ava: though having any patience when it comes to you doesn't seem to be my strong suit Ava: arguably not a virtue I'm known for, ever, but especially now James: I'll do my best not to miss you so hard that it's physically painful but that doesn't appear to be my strong suit either & as previously agreed, I won't make any promises I'm forced to immediately break Ava: Oh Ava: Knowing it wasn't just me finding out that painful cliche is painfully real is somehow a comfort, to know you'll want to avoid the feeling as much as I do from now on but it also hurts me even more, the idea of you having to feel it at all in the first place Ava: but there is no conflict in just how hard I'm looking forward to seeing you again after this ill-timed holiday James: I don't ever want you to be in pain because of me, I have to insist on only the good cliches going forward James: devastatingly a postcard can't be included in that Ava: Hmm, got any long-lost great aunties I can pretend to be? 🤔😂 James: If I do my wife is bound to be aware of them, their current financial situation & any possible health concerns they are facing Ava: Valid Ava: Don't need to give her any more reason to 💀💀💀 me Ava: At least no holiday is complete without the obligatory narcissistic poolside shoot James: suffice to say I've never had a complete holiday, in that case Ava: I bet you've had to be cameraman plenty though Ava: so rude when you're so nice to look at James: & yet I've never been trusted to pick a filter Ava: 🙄 Ava: does she not know that you're an artiste James: no, it's our secret Ava: 😊 I like that James: I like you Ava: I like that more James: I wish I could see you again before you go Ava: Me too Ava: I kinda wish I weren't going James: how early are your parents getting back exactly? Ava: like 4am kinda early James: I won't make you stay awake again James: I know how tired you must be Ava: 🥺 James: I'm so relieved that I can't see that look on your actual face Ava: It's 💔 Ava: but I'll survive Ava: about James: you're a very strong person Ava: You James: I'm not Ava: You are though Ava: you put up with so much shit James: is that strength or is it weakness? Ava: I think it's strength Ava: You can't necessarily stop shit happening or get shit out of your life Ava: no matter how strong Ava: and you manage to do all the shit you have to regardless James: I'd like to think you're right Ava: Then you should Ava: I encourage it Ava: 🤓 me James: you are undeniably clever Ava: Try to be Ava: when I'm not standing in the middle of cycle paths, obviously James: I heard you say that bike came out of nowhere Ava: Yeah Ava: I miss you already Ava: Frank is not as good a nurse, like at all James: if you can fall asleep now, I'd feel less guilty about the prospect of asking you not to later James: should I hypothetically be able to get away Ava: 🛌🏃 Ava: Promise James: I can't give you a promise back Ava: I know Ava: but this way, I either stay asleep and that's that Ava: or I get the best surprise to wake me up James: what did I do to deserve you? Ava: This is the part where I say something very bad but Ava: you don't seem capable Ava: you're just James: whatever it was, I need to know so I can keep doing it Ava: just be you Ava: another cliche you've proven to be true and real James: this fortnight without you is going to be really cliche James: there's no chance of it existing beyond the 1st draft Ava: not even for my eyes only? James: well James: maybe Ava: Please please please James: okay James: you are my fairest critic & you do have beautiful eyes Ava: Yours are better Ava: but I won't be too jealous if I get to look at them more James: I definitely can't promise not to be envious of everyone in the Seychelles who will get to look at you more than I can Ava: Do you ever get a decent lunchbreak? Ava: we could facetime James: I'll figure something out James: because my dad takes the longest lunch breaks, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's the 80s Ava: 😏 we love a throwback 🙄 James: I'll take Matty to work with me, she'll distract whoever I need her to Ava: She is very cute Ava: I see it James: I won't be saying anything the like of that if she won't sleep tonight though Ava: 🤞 for you and her Ava: shame she's not yet at the walking stage Ava: Frank is so 💤 James: I can't keep her in any kind of routine, it's frustrating for both of us Ava: That's hard James: it's harder for her than it is for me, she never knows what's happening Ava: She'll get there Ava: I was the worst baby Ava: hopefully before you totally lose your mind, 'course James: I find it impossible to believe you weren't 😇 Ava: I was pretty premmie so my poor parents were confined to perpetual bright light for ages when I got home James: both the girls were so late James: that was an entirely different struggle Ava: I can imagine how delightful Ava: usually excusable but when you set the bar low to begin with 😬 James: the last thing I want to do is badmouth her to you, but as we know, sometimes things write themselves Ava: I feel you Ava: not a cliche I particularly wanna be either James: of course not Ava: but you can vent, you know Ava: I don't even have to reply, just if you need to put it somewhere James: no, I can't Ava: okay, just a suggestion James: so much of this is already not fair to you, Ava Ava: I don't think it is Ava: you've never lied about any of it, you're always realistic about what you can and can't give me Ava: and I'd like to help, in any tiny way I'm able James: you don't know what she's like & I'd rather you didn't have to know James: let's keep it at you don't do sympathy Ava: I know very little but that's not positive so it doesn't take your author level of imagination if I wanna go there without your guidance Ava: and it isn't sympathy but okay Ava: I won't mention her and you don't have to either James: I just can't have you seeing me differently because Ava: I'd never see you differently because of what she's like as a person James: it's too big of a risk for me to take, that you'll end up thinking less of me than you do now Ava: You can trust me Ava: but you don't have to Ava: I won't push anything, I don't need to Ava: as much as I want to take things fast in so many respects, I'm never going to take it where you don't want it James: it isn't you I don't trust James: I'm not a reliable narrator, she's made sure I'm not Ava: However...intertwined and diluted you feel your story got, because of her, because of whatever Ava: it's always gonna be your story to tell, if you want it Ava: and I'll always listen to how you tell it James: Ava Ava: James James: if it was a story I was in control of I'd come to the airport & tell you not to go James: cliche or not Ava: and I'd stay Ava: but that's far too much like a happy ending and we've only just begun James: you're right again Ava: don't sound so surprised 😉 James: I was actually trying to decide where it falls on the scale of ideas & habits, good, bad or somewhere in between James: that you always seem to be Ava: Have you drawn a conclusion yet? James: I couldn't possibly tell you James: you're supposed to be asleep Ava: damn Ava: you'll tell me in the morning? James: yes Ava: Okay, I'll go, as long as you know it is so reluctantly it's practically under protest James: & I won't stay here hoping you don't, as long as you know it's under identical conditions Ava: Noted Ava: Goodnight and sweet dreams for whenever that happens for you then, love James: thank you

Welcome to your new life
"Hey!"
Australia slowly turned around, not recognising the voice that called out. "Err, hi?"
A young blond stopped running just before he crashed into Australia. "You're new around here, huh? I'm America. Well, the United States of America. But you can call me Alfie if you want. Or Alfred works too, I guess. What's your name?"
"A-Australia." The young boy replied, pushing a stray bit of brown hair away from his matching eyes.
"Do you have a human name yet?" America asked, blue eyes burning with insatiable curiosity.
"Not an English one."
"Oh."
There was a moment of awkward silence before another young, blond boy appeared.
"Alfie! Why did you run off like that? You know Mr. England gets upset when you do that..." the stranger stopped chastising America when he noticed Australia.
"Hello. Who are you?"
"I'm-"
"Mattie, I found him! He's another country! Can we keep him? Pretty please?" America pleaded.
The air became chilled, though it was only America that didn't notice.
"Yes, John will be residing with us." The scary white man said. "But, Alfred, we do not 'keep' people... we train them. Matthew, take John to his room. Alfred. With me." Without so much as a hint of a welcome or smile, England turned on his hee and retreated down the hall.
Alfred rolled his eyes and sent after the grouchy old man; this left Australia alone with 'Mattie'.
"Who's John?" He asked the other boy timidly. Mattie offered him a sad, small smile.
"You, Australia. And I'm Canada. But you should get used to called me Matthew." He paused to let it sink in, deep sadness reflected in his ageless violet eyes. "Come along then. I'll show you your room."
They trudged up the stairs in silence. Australia was having such a difficult time with stairs and stuffy suits. He wanted to go home, back to the gums and beaches, the billabongs and vast desert. The air over here was toxic and he could feel the cries of his people already.
"Welcome to your new life." Canada's soft voice broke the silence. The two young colonies stood outside of a large oak door. Th elder of the two pushed the door open slowly and they both stepped in.
"My advice to you is to keep your room clean and do everything England says. It's less painful that way." Canada's voice was still incredibly gentle. "I know how hard it is, so I'll help you learn when I can. So will Alfred. If you ever need anyone to talk to we'll always be here."
Australia said nothing; gave no indication that be has heard or understood anything at all. The brunette stood, statue-like in the centre of the room. Canada smiled again, he understood completely.
He went to leave but paused halfway through the door. "Just don't freak out when you start to change, okay? The more colonies he makes, the more like him you'll become."
With those last words Canada disappeared, and Australia cried.

My First Wedding Videography Gig - Starting Out as a Freelancer
Tumblr media
Watch here - https://youtu.be/B87mE3uJ05w
15 AUG 2020
A cloudy day that turned to non-stop rain. It certainly helped with more or less consistent lighting.
PREPARATION
I've been friends with Heidi for 7 years now! It has been such a privilege and joy to shoot and edit her wedding video. I made two - the full length version was 1 hour 40 min and the second video is the highlights around 7 min.
I've been getting into videography and motion graphics in the past 2 years. I've mainly done travel videos and some graphic templates. When she first asked me to be her wedding videographer, I was so excited and so freaking out! I certainly felt the pressure of making it good. The only disappointing thing was because of Covid restrictions, my boyfriend couldn't come and film as well. It would have been incredibly handy to have extra angles to capture those expressions.
My first instinct was to jump on YouTube and search for Wedding Videography Tips and 'How-Tos'.  I have looked up to a lot of videographers on YouTube who showcase their work and provide helpful tutorials. Here are a few videos with tips and considerations I found useful before the day of the wedding.

As I was getting ready prepping with theory and strategy, there was one tip that I learned from Daniel Schiffer that I had to do. That was making a shot list. I prepared a shot list for Heidi, then sent it to her to double check if I missed anything. This was really key in ensuring that I don't miss any moment or people in the video.

**Something to note is I did consider the issue of audio, but thankfully the ceremony was being broadcasted through zoom and they had extra cameras and audio set up, which was something I didn't need to worry about.
The next thing I did was to present the couple a few reference videos on YouTube of what style they would want the video to be. They didn't seem to fussed but they certainly liked the examples I had given them.

WEDDING DAY
This was how it all went down:
7 A.M.  WAKE UP 8 A.M. LEAVE TO TRAIN 10:30 A.M. ARRIVE AT HOTEL - Film Bride and Groom 12 P.M. GROOM LEAVES HOTEL TO CHURCH 1 P.M. BRIDE LEAVES HOTEL TO CHURCH 1:30 P.M. CEREMONY STARTS 3:30 P.M. LATE LUNCH 5 P.M. GROUP PHOTOS 5:45 P.M. TEA CEREMONY
CAMERA - Lumix G85 LENS - ZhongYi Mitakon 25mm f/0.95              Lumix G VARIO 14-42mm  f/3.5-5.6
The first half of the day went surprisingly smooth. Arrived unscathed at the hotel, found the bride's room no problem and began shooting while she was getting her make up done. I got some shots of the dress and rings as well. Later on the groom was ready, so I got some shots the grooms men helping the groom with his suit. Then other closeup shots with placing the handkerchief in the pocket, tying shoes. After the groom was ready, we all headed back to the bride. Heidi hid behind the door ajar and David approached and they touched hands. It was a very cute scene to film! David and the groomsmen went off to the church venue. Meanwhile the rest of the time I spent filming the Heidi's parents helping her with her dress.
All these scenes I shot using the Mitakon f/0.95 to get that awesome depth of field combined with close up shots all hand held. The plan was I would leave with the bride's mum first and once we got to the church, I would switch to the 14-42mm and use the DJI Ronin-sc gimbal. Total fail.
I spent a good 30 minutes fixing and trying to set up the gimbal....! So incredibly frustrating. I realised that I didn't bring my quick release plate and so I had to redo the entire set up. Even when I got my camera on, it wouldn't stop jittering. Eventually I got it working. Unfortunately the footage using the 14-42mm was a bit too dark, I should have realised the interior of the church wasn't that well lit. I ended up having to do hand held shots with the Mitakon during the signing and also during the first dance - which worked out really nicely!
FILMING HINDSIGHT
WHAT WORKED OUT
Preparing the shot list
Getting there early at the hotel
Mitakon f/0.95 close ups
Transitions and shot ideas - rehearsing the movements beforehand and also coming up with transitions on the spot
POINTERS FOR NEXT TIME
An extra person filming with me would be great
Seriously need to check and prepare for the gimbal set up
Account for delays throughout the wedding
Save up for zoom lenses - luckily I know the bride well so I didn't feel awkward getting in their faces.
VIDEO EDITING
Having other on going projects, I ended up completing all the vidoes in about a month and a half. I use the apps Clockify and RescueTime to track roughly the amount of time spent. I ended up doing 17-20 hours of work on editing. The wedding video took around 8 hours and the highlights took 6 hours - excluding changes.
Originally I was thinking of doing this for free for my friend, but she kindly offered to pay at a discounted rate. That made me reflect what kind of price I should charge in the future...
EXTRA FILES: - Zoom recorded video - Bridesmaid video and audio - Wedding graphics
With the combination of the zoom video files, that helped fill in the gaps that I couldn't get. Overall I'm really delighted with the final outcome of the highlights video. The only annoying aspect was the inconsistency of quality of the clips. It had been a tough process of filtering out all the clips so I began editing it in chronological order, getting the best bits. Then I was able to jumble it up to match the transitions and the progression of the story. I completed the full video first before attempting the highlights... and boy I NEEDED motivation for that. Sometimes, starting from scratch, new music and just bringing in the best clips together is just the way to go.
VIDEO EDITING HINDSIGHT
WHAT WORKED OUT
Choosing the music first
Cutting only the best clips chronologically and saving that as an original sequence
Editing based on those chosen clips
Sending a sample for the couple to check the video direction
POINTERS FOR NEXT TIME
The zoom file came as an MTS file. I now hate MTS files. That took so long to figure out how to resolve the audio. Definitely have a better understanding though now.
There were a couple of changes that the couple wanted to make, which of course is not a problem at all. Thankfully they were simple changes. But certainly always to be prepared for changes, to save and make all files in a way that can be revisited and edited.
Another thing is it made me consider how to charge if there were multiple changes needed.
THANK YOU...
for reading me documenting my first experience as a wedding videographer. What was your first wedding gig like? Or first time going out there filming and editing?

Episode 20: The Plan
“The only clue you got was that the code is a birthday? How are we suppose to figure that out?” I asked frustrated as I faced my brother.
Tumblr media
After our eye-opening night, we stood now outside in what they called the yard. A fenced off concrete area baking in the sun behind the building. It was simply a false sense of freedom I likened to recess, but it was more freedom than what we had inside. We could talk about plans and ideas here without the guards listening in. Not to say there weren’t guards around, but they seem more focused on the walkers outside the gate than us or any talk about codes.
“Look. I don’t know, but I could tell from his body language that was a clue.”
“Body language? Are you serious?” I said trying hard to remain calm. “Either way it could be anyone birthday. Someone that’s long dead even. That’s if it’s birthday even.”
“It is a birthday and like or not it’s what I got!”
“Which is nothing!” I snapped feeling a rush of annoyance again. “So what are you going to do? Do you plan on drinking some more with your boyfriend while you gossip about birthdays?”
“I did more than you did with your girlfriend last night!”
“Girlfriend?” I heard a confused voice say behind me. I turned around to see Madison folding her arms and furrowing her brow. I gasped turning bright red and Nathan burst out laughing.
Tumblr media
I stuttered stumbling over my words, “He was kidding. We weren’t even talking about you….well we were, but not in that way. Not that you’re not worth talking about. I mean you’re great…”
I watched her face go from confused to holding in laughter. She waved her hand for me to stop as a giggle escaped her lips. The sun beaming on her radiant face making me all the more uncomfortable and embarrassed.
“Smooth move, Matty,” Nate jested slapping me on the back.
I lifted my foot and stomped his causing him leap back in pain. His face turning as red as mine. “You should get that foot checked out. Maybe they got some fungicide for it”, I jeered back muffling my laughter.
“Maybe you can go with me. Have yours checked out too. Maybe unlodge the foot in your mouth while you at it,” he mumbled shooting me a dirty look. “Well, I see Lin over there. I think I’ll say hi. Have fun.”
He winked at me and headed over towards them limping slightly. I almost wondered if I should stop him from making a fool of himself with Lin, but Madison grabbed my attention again as she stood beside me smiling.
“Matty?” she laughed.
Tumblr media
“It’s a family nickname. Well, mostly Nate just calls me that. It’s annoying,” I said trying to regain my composure as I leaned on the wall behind us. “Um…but I’m OK with you calling me that if you want.”
“Nah. I’ll stick with Matthew or Matt…for now if you don’t mind, "she smirked leaning beside me. "So…he’s the only family you got left?”
“Yeah.”
“You’re lucky. Most don’t have that….like me. God, I miss my sister sometimes.”
“Oh, she…”
“She died. Like what happens to everyone nowadays.”
“We had a sister. She also died. Right when this happened,” I lamented.
“I’m sorry,” she said touching my shoulder.
“I’m sorry too.”
I sighed. “That woman in quarantine. I can’t help, but feel guilty. Seeing her get bit reminded me of my sister actually. The same terror. The same sadness in her eyes. I should have done something. Something more than I did.“
“Like what? It’s not like you could have predicted what would happen. You did what you could. You did what was right. You really think Sarah would have been OK with you murdering her fiancé when there was a glimmer of hope for her. No. You did the right thing and I’m sure you did all you could for your sister."
She then turned to me smiling,  “So you have nothing to be guilty about. In fact, your actions in quarantine are what earned you my trust.”
Tumblr media
I nodded trying not to turn bright red again as her eyes burrowed into mine. I hadn’t expected her words to confront me, but they did. I felt like a weight had been lifted off me. Just like in quarantine she managed to soothe my wandering mind again. Suddenly I felt the urge to talk to her more. To learn more about her, but I soon realized I would have to wait. Wade began waving frantically at us from the other side of the yard. Calling to us trying to get our attention.
“Looks like Wade wants us to come over. Probably to talk about the plan,” she said rolling her eyes. "The plan? The code thing?“
"No. The escape plan and where to go after this. We discussed it in quarantine before you came in.”
I followed her confused, but interested. No plan had been mentioned during breakfast. The conversation had been mostly dominated by last night’s discoveries. Both the enlightening and morbid details of it all. I was actually starting to feel a kinship with the group, but now I would have to learn of this “plan”.
“No. No. I’m not including the Wonder Twins into this. No way!” Wade growled glaring at me as Madison and I joined the group. “Take your brother and fuck off.”
“Oh, Wade give it rest! This isn’t some exclusive club,” Madison huffed.
“No, but are we going let everybody and their brother in on this? We don’t have the room.”
“We can probably fit them on my yacht,” Lin cooed at Wade.
“Cool! You have a yacht? ” Nate exclaimed putting his arm around her shoulder. “Maybe one day you can show me.”
“The only thing I’m going show you is my fist if you don’t get your hands off of me!”
Wade snorted, “I’m not getting on that floating monstrosity you call a boat! No way! We’re staying on the road and that’s final!”
“Didn’t know you knew such big words, Wade. It’s impressive,” Lin spat staring at him intensely. His eyes also burn into hers and matching looks of annoyance spread across their faces, but Madison glare stopped both of them in their tracks.
He sighed rubbing his temples, “Fine. The weirdo and his brother can come along, but you’re in charge of them Madison. They’re not my problem. If they become a problem, it’s on you.”
“Great! Now can we get to why we’re having this meeting?!”
Tumblr media
Lin started turning back to Wade, “The plan is once we bust out of here we plan to head for the yacht my family owns. Then we set sail for the islands where the dead population should be scarce and if I’m wrong we have the boat. The dead ones can’t swim right?”
“Oh for fuck sakes Lin! That’s your silly plan!” Wade growled. “My plan is to stay on the freaking road on solid ground and keep riding till we get to Washington where I hear they may have a cure. We would be riding in style too on my eighteen-wheeler. Plenty of coverage and power to get through the dead ones!”
“A cure? You believe that guy?! So stupid!”
“You’re stupid!”
Decision: Guys! Shut up. Let’s see what our new friends think. So what’s the ideal plan boys? Lin’s boat trip to the high seas and the islands? Or Wade’s eighteen-wheeler on the road to Washington?”
