As a child, Nicholas loved to tell stories and would make home movies and short films with his siblings and neighborhood kids. However, when he reached high school, he excelled in business classes and decided to pursue a business degree at Wilfrid Laurier University without really knowing what he wanted for his future career. At Laurier, he specialized in marketing but it was his volunteer experiences where he truly thrived. With summer jobs at the campus Student Leadership Centre, Nicholas began to consider a career in Student Affairs and even worked as a Laurier recruiter briefly after graduating. It was during his time on the road where he reflected on what he should do with his business degree and decided that he needed to put it to work in the film and television industry. Luckily, Bell Canada, one of Canada’s largest telecommunications companies has a Graduate Development Program where he could switch jobs every 7 months to get a better sense of the company before landing a more permanent career. He enthusiastically applied and was accepted with the hope of getting a job in Bell Media. Despite the many mentors he had at Bell, and despite him excelling in all of his roles, he was unable to find a role at Bell Media. He had to get his storytelling fix another way and joined a group that made short films on the weekends. Life went on like this for a while until one day Nicholas found a lump on his testicle that was quickly diagnosed as testicular cancer. The good news is that he caught it early and is now cancer-free, but this health scare prompted him to really consider if he would be happy doing the same thing day to day in five years. When the answer was no, he knew he needed to make a change. Three years later, Nicholas is entering his final year of Film School at Columbia University and working on his thesis film, Elegy for a Glacier. I saw @EllenKuras talk about using 1/3 of the light for digital (Personal Velocity, Eternal Sunshine, & the Vietnamese doc)

people were overlighting digital from shooting 35mm, but we were trying to make mini-DV look like film  on Panasonic/24P.

amped up colors of the sky bc I came out of electronic dance scene. & tried to create mystery w waking up ECU's & long shot

Casting South Asian actors was hard in those days & the lead was in the MFA program at the Actors Studio. We collab'd a lot

an experiment & $500 in those days, when we would run & gun everyday. 3 day shoot/ 1 month editing. Thanks for sharing!

also opposite of Bollywood - no one was telling verite' about messed up brown kids in those days. all my friends' music.

we only had 1 tube light from my uncle's hardware store & lots of black wrap for directional hard edge shadows.

and a giant roll of ND for the car window.

I wish there was a HighRes, color corrected version online, but the hard drive died long ago.100gb was huge in those days.

the story is a bit weird, but it came out of class exercise where we had to shoot someone else's script. Harold&Maude-ish

...and then I wanted to give it a female perspective/gaze instead of a male fantasy, in the Revision & shooting style.

I watched Olivier Assayas' Cold Water @ColumbiaFilm when I was Editing this, and it changed my life.

I’m always so proud when one of my @columbiafilm school classmates makes a new work of art. My friend Frederic Tcheng (Valentino, the Last Emperor, Dior and I, Diana Vreeland the Eye has to Travel) has directed another fashion doc, this time about #Halston, America’s first great fashion designer). It’s a wonderful film that premiered at this year’s @sundanceorg Film Festival and has a one week run around the country this week! @jacesonic and I saw it last night and we can’t stop talking about it, it’s that good. It’s the Citizen Kane of docs, and smartly features one of my faves @tavitulle as the Narrator. congrats to @dmagpr for having another fab doc under their belt and to @dinoray for leading the uber informative Q&A last night.
