Rest in peace, Sir Eddie Garcia. In 2005, I was fortunate enough to work with this cinema legend for my film school thesis film called DEXTER CALLIOPE AND THE ADARNA BIRD. He played Lolo Tiburcio, our storyteller, in a scene with Conrad Javier, the young Dexter. We shot on 16mm film, and Sir Eddie was a RIOT onset. He knew we were all young filmmakers all starting out (cinematography by @odysseyflores , production design by @trinkalat , styling by @christina_dy , assisted directed by @issalitton , edited by Maui Mauricio, music by @mikeyamistoso and @itchyjazz , sound design by Mark Laccay and Erwin Romulo, written by @wincyaquinoong , PA @mihkvergara , Art Dept @neurotic.ninja Cris Silva) and he used this onset opportunity to test/tease us about continuity, make us laugh, and keep us on our toes. The creation of his character was so important for him -- he requested for a face towel and a Beer na Beer (quite a rare local beer that our PAs had to scour for) that his character would be drinking in the middle of the day. He also used his own reading glasses and slippers. He was the first huge actor I ever worked with, and I am grateful that he gave me a chance. Does it have to take the accidental onset death of one of our greatest actors in the history of our cinema, a man still working in the industry at the AGE OF 90, to finally practice SAFETY in our film and TV productions? I’m always so proud when one of my @columbiafilm school classmates makes a new work of art. My friend Frederic Tcheng (Valentino, the Last Emperor, Dior and I, Diana Vreeland the Eye has to Travel) has directed another fashion doc, this time about #Halston, America’s first great fashion designer). It’s a wonderful film that premiered at this year’s @sundanceorg Film Festival and has a one week run around the country this week! @jacesonic and I saw it last night and we can’t stop talking about it, it’s that good. It’s the Citizen Kane of docs, and smartly features one of my faves @tavitulle as the Narrator. congrats to @dmagpr for having another fab doc under their belt and to @dinoray for leading the uber informative Q&A last night. in 2015, I got the dream opportunity of directing @msleasalonga in a @creamsilkph campaign and I totally fangirled onset AFTER the shoot (see 2nd photo for the flashback). last night, @gtongi and I got to marvel at Lea’s sold out live show, laugh at her jokes, and reminisce songs from our childhood (I personally was a puddle during Mulan’s “Reflections” and Ms Saigon’s “I’d Give My Life for You”). Even her cover of that One Direction Song was unexpected and fantastic. After the gig, we got the VIP treatment backstage and I got to give her flowers 💐 and tell her how much she inspires me. Growing up in Manila, @leonardmaltin was the first film critic I was ever exposed to because we owned his Movie Guide and my sisters would cross reference films they wanted to watch there and we’d star ⭐️ films actually we got to see. TONIGHT!! A documentary I got to edit with the late great @jonschnepp is a part of the amazing MALTINFEST and showing once again at the The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood!
