Summary: Immediately following the end of WWII, Killian Jones and Emma Swan have a serendipitous meeting upon a train platform while each travels to their respective homes. When Emma’s traveling companion fails to arrive, she offers Killian her extra ticket so he isn’t forced to spend the night on a hard bench outside the station’s office. Once aboard, Emma receives devastating news - her lover has abandoned her to face her family alone with the news she is pregnant, and now, without a fiance. Moved with compassion, and a willingness to put off what is (or rather, what is not) awaiting him at home, Killian offers to go with her to face her family. They concoct a scheme to get married then have Killian “abandon” her a few weeks afterward, leaving her with no other option than to seek a divorce. A plan that will cast him as the villain and leave her somewhat blameless in her family’s eyes.

Five?! I guess I can give you five.. (plus a few extras..) I pick the ones I reread the most as my "top five favorites", which is the best way I know how to narrow this down, but I'm not convinced I have a favorite or a top 5. There are far too many good reads in the CS community!

1. Unbreakable - xHookenonKillianx

I reread the epilogue, just by itself, quite frequently. It's so beautiful. As soon as I forget the meaning of certain details in it, I reread this fic, which usually amounts to once a year.

2. The Legend of Captain Killian Jones - hollyeleigh @hollyethecurious

Ooph I love when someone manages to bring pirate-from-the-18th-century Killian to a modern AU. I just love how all the details add up and how they fall in love and how Henry is as much a part of the story as CS. I reread this every October. (often once again when winter appears over, too)

3. Alone, until I get home - phthalo @peglegjones

I think I need to reread this [again] to give it accurate praise, because my memory SUCKS, but Henry and Ian's dynamic is one aspect I remember well, and appreciate. It's so hard to write kids and keep them relevant in a story and she does this sooo well. And the little bits of magick.. that made my heart swell. I don't wanna spoil anything..

4. How you remind me - cosette141 @cosette141

Any fic that can do it better than canon deserves praise. This is canon divergence from Killian showing up in New York, and the whole thing is my new head canon for the show.

5. Second star to the right - only_halfway_there

This was different than most CS fics, and I suspect it's because this was written before we got a lot of CS in the show? But that just means this author used her creativity, making a different Neverland, a different version of Hook, and the whole thing is so unique and beautiful.

This one is incomplete, hence it's spot here at #6, but I'll never give up on it being completed one day. A ton of people from the past show up in the present all at once, including one Pirate Captain Killian Jones. (Again.. pirate-from-the-18th-century Killian in a modern AU..)

Stacy’s Favorite Completed Captain Swan AU Fics

I have mentioned before that reading Captain Swan fics has kept me going through this pandemic and has lightened my mood through the election.  I thought I would take a moment to mention some of my favorite completed AU fics.  

I have to really thank all the lovely fic writers on this list for continuing to write about this beautiful couple long after the show has left the air. As a former Glee Fanfiction writer, I know the struggle of getting in the chapters, waiting for comments, and hoping with that sick feeling in your gut that people will like it. These writers are very lovely and have created great stories that I have loved reading!

heyyy! what angsty fics would you recommend?

I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask for fic recs. I am WAY behind on reading. I've got 47 fics bookmarked on Ao3 waiting to be read! But, I can tell you what some of my favorite angsty fics have been. I'm on mobile, so I can't give you links though. These are all on Ao3. They are pretty popular, so you may have already heard of them, but here we go:1. Rash Defamation by Data_Girl_3. This is a 3B canon divergence that will keep you guessing right along with Emma. She has more in this universe too (which are of course sitting in my bookmark folder.) Rated T2. Whether We Wake or Sleep by Ripplestichskein . This is a WIP that diverges from canon in the CS movie leaving Emma and Killian stuck in the EF of the past. The angst in this one is cranked all the way to 11! The author doesn't update often, but when she does, the chapters are long and SO worth the wait. Rated T3. Coming Home to You by PhiraLovesLoki. This is a modern AU based loosely on Sweet Home Alabama. I mean loosely in the best way, because this story transcends that Rom Com and takes it to a beautiful, angst - filled place. Rated T4. Sadly, when the show ended, she decided to retire leaving several WIP that I loved unfinished. This one is a neighbors modern AU in which David and Mary Margaret run into Emma, Killian, and Henry at the grocery store and mistakenly think they are married and Henry is Killian’s son. Emma proceeds to continue the charade, going home with Killian to Storybrooke for Christmas. Angst and adorable Captain Cobra with a baby Henry ensues. Rated T5. More Than All the Stars. This is also by colormyheartred and was her swan song before leaving the fandom (no pun intended). This is a soul mates modern AU with a dash of realistic fantasy in that everyone is born with a birthmark that matches that of their soul mate. Killian goes to Storybrooke to stop his brother from marrying his birthmark soul mate Elsa, whom he barely knows. Of course he meets Emma, and angst and pining ensues. Recommendation Wednesday! (Because why not?) I read this story twice, and I still think about it from time to time. It feels very real, has a good balance between modern life and the show's characters. And it avoided one of my pet peeves (even though I'm a CS'r) - they don't villainize Neal.
