synopsis: the duke loves you dearly, yes, but how could you possibly know that? includes: bridgerton au, suggestive, profanity , hoon is a rake
as duke and duchess of hastings, it was expected that you produce an heir within the year. being the notorious love match of the season, the diamond and the duke, the image of your family back in london was counting on your ability to ‘perform your duty’, as the ton loved to put it.
sunghoon, your husband, the duke, had been the one to propose the deal. you’d been told your whole life that your interests meant nothing if your husband did not share them, yet he had asked you what your favorite color was. you had been told that horse riding wasn’t ladylike, yet he had shown you his favorite mare and asked you if you’d ever ridden.
he was all the right things, you’d thought. though truthfully, he had one quality you couldn't look past. he was a rake. he frequented brothels, fucked whores, but called on you and gave you the most expensive flowers, and spoke the sweetest of nothings. it was almost enough to look past. you’d thought that you’d be able to get past it, that if he was in love with you enough to propose he’d be in love enough to stop visiting the brothels.
that hope was shattered the moment he’d proposed. it wasn’t romantic, nor was it anything you wanted.
“a deal?” you remember asking when he had looked at you with eyes you had never seen so unfeeling, “or a marriage?”
“you will be allowed the estate. every luxury you desire will be yours.” he had stated, “while i—“
“spend your nights at your beloved brothels?” his face when you had spoken those words had sent your heart into its own frozen hell. “you do not have to explain yourself, your grace.”
and so, the two of you married. you knew that despite the pieces he had left your heart in he would keep his word, and he did. you’d never worn such luxurious gowns nor felt fabric so soft and breathable as your nightdress.
your mama had told you little about what the night of your wedding entailed, only that if a certain event did not transpire the marriage would be null. that event was never described in full to you by your mother, only hinted at by jane austen, and yet it had been nearly a month since your nuptials and the duke had left the space between the two of you alarmingly obvious. the large bed that while you both slept on you did not share, the avoidance of eye contact, and the heat of his hand on yours only for him to pull away before you can let it pool.
on mornings that you allow yourself to sleep in, you are unsure if the ghostly touch along your cheekbone and the gentle tucking of your hair out of your face is your imagination or just the breeze coming from the open window. on nights that you are plagued by the feeling of being undesirable, you can feel his gaze on your back when he thinks you’re asleep.
on a night like this one, you find yourself reaching a point of exhaustion. “your grace.” you greet as you enter his study, the place he would keep to himself and even eat on most nights.
he barely glances up from his paperwork, “do you need something?”
shaking your head, you pull the shawl you have over your shoulders to cover the skin that your nightdress didn’t. the pink color of the fabric was what you had described as your favorite when the duke had asked. it’s the color of nearly every dress you have been provided with since moving into clyvedon. “no, i simply came to inform you that i am having the maids move my things into the duchess’s chambers.”
his interest is piqued, and he finally looks at you. “why ever would you have them do that?”
“is reason needed to move into my own chambers?”
your response garners a look from your husband, “separate rooms shall not be suffered.”
his words cause you to scoff, “yet a silent marriage will be?”
he is silent for a moment before he speaks, “jones.” the butler standing by the door straightens up, “inform the maids that they will under no circumstances move the duchess’ belongings from our chambers.”
“sir.” the man nods, exiting the room and leaving you with your husband.
“will you continue to go about your days acting as if i do not exist?” you question goes unanswered as sunghoon resumes his paperwork. “fine, i will move them myself.”
“you will do no such thing.”
“oh, i believe i will.” you retort and sunghoon stands, hands placed on the desk as his jaw shifts.
“i forbid you.”
the audacity baffles you, frustration turning into fury within the second, “you forbid me?”
sunghoon walks out from behind his desk, stopping beside it, “you are my wife. your hatred i can tolerate but i will not allow the agony of separate rooms.”
“am i your wife?” you ask, watching his hands twitch at his sides and his eyes darken, “we had a wedding, yes, but if we did not spend that night together are we truly married?”
“you speak nonsense.” he dismisses, eyes no longer on you as he turns away, “go to bed.”
“do not speak to me like i am a child—“
“i said-“ he starts, voice raising as he turns back toward you with a darkness in his gaze, “go. to. bed.”
his eyes pierce your own as his voice is low and nearly breathless, you lower your chin just the slightest as your heart aches, “i am not a child, nor am i a fool. i know you do not love me but i did not think you cruel enough for trickery.”
“trickery?” he asks, seemingly clueless as the what you mean.
you begin, “the day we met in that garden i thought you different, kind. you led me to believe such lies, you knew i could not say no to you, you trapped me in a loveless marriage that you knew i did not desire—“
“loveless? if that is what you believe this marriage to be, it is not i who is the cause,” he argues, and you narrow your eyes.
“am i to believe that you love me? have your actions up to this very moment warranted such beliefs?” your question causes your husband’s jaw to shift.
“go to bed.” he looks down at his desk again.
“do not tell me what to do.”
“what do you want from me?” he whips around to look at you. “i have given you riches, i have given you every gown you could possibly desire, i have had the finest soaps imported from india and yet you continue to oppose me. what. do. you. want?”
“i want a husband. not a stranger that i share a bed with, not a keeper.” you state, “i know you do not love me, but if I am to be duchess and produce an heir i deserve better than an absent duke.”
sunghoon remains silent for a moment before his hands clench into fists and his cold eyes meet your own. “call me a stranger, loathe my existence for the rest of your life but never think for even a moment that i do not love you.”
you are stunned into silence, and he continues, stepping closer and closer until your breaths mingle as he says, “i have spent the past fortnights in agony. suffering through the nights i cannot touch you. speaking to you is not enough, nor is being in your company. i have never in my life felt as though i cannot inhale what another does not exhale and yet i find myself suffocating with every moment i am not by your side.”
his fingers ghost over your cheekbone and you find your breath caught in your throat. “i have loved you ever since i saw you in that garden. do not dare question that.”
your lips part and his eyes follow them. your chest rises as you inhale sharply and deeply, attempting to process the words leaving his lips as well as their close proximity to your own. “you…love me.”
your tone is not one of question, and his pleasure in that fact is shown through both his actions and the three words you had yearned to leave his lips since he’d proposed. the same lips that capture yours in a hungry and insatiable kiss that has you in shambles.
your knees buckle, legs turning to jelly, and like he had expected it his arms wrap around you and pulls you closer. his tongue meets yours the moment your lips part and as he brings you to sit on his desk, the pressure of his body between your legs sends a jolt of pleasure you have never experienced before up your body, prompting a choked whimper to escape between the mess of lips and tongue.
“your grace.” you exhale against him, quickly silenced by his lips once again as he breathes you in like you’re the last atom of oxygen on earth.
“your grace.” he responds in kind, hand trailing up your thigh under your nightdress. then, there’s contact and a loud keen that like the rest of them, he swallows with ease.

OKAY now that we have images from someone let's check this shit out:
Wide assumption seems to be that this takes place in "the heavens" because of the background, which is not unlikely. We are only seeing the sky reflected, however, so... "the stars looked down upon a perfect mirror and saw their own divine reflections," amirite? Aaravos crying also closely ties this scene to Ripples, the other time we have had Aaravos's tears specifically called out.
Also, we see that Aaravos's eye diamond markings appear to be unique to him, or at least not a consistent feature of Startouch elves—the Merciful One instead has a single mark in the center of their brow, which hmmmmMMMMM
ANYWAY those things aside, what I really wanted to point out here is that this is already fallen Aaravos. We can see the dark pupils of his eyes behind his tears, and his eyes do not glow. His star freckles are significantly dimmer than those on the Merciful One, and he's also rendered as less glow-y in that the outlines of his hair and eyebrows are gray (darker than the hair color) while on the Merciful One they are white (lighter than the hair color). We can also juuuuust barely see the black tip of his chest mark.
We're also, on the other side of that, seeing that the Merciful One is not fallen. Which may mean Aaravos groups them with the arrogant stars as his enemies, but we'll see. We still don't really have any idea what "fallen" entails.
I'm not going to comment on the scene's content, because I haven't seen any actual dialogue transcriptions, only the vague description from the initial discord > twitter > tumblr summary. This is a place where exact wording really matters, not even to mention tone. Though if the line is literally "We are now connected by love, or something" I will laugh my ass off.
So basically I'm thinking this scene coincides with the events described in Ripples, whether those are Aaravos's fall and expulsion or (my personal opinion) the punishment of Leola.

𝓒𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓘
In which, you, a lady of the ton, are forced to participate in courting season. Except that courting season comes with one particularly silver tongued Prince who is making it his mission to drive you absolutely insane.
↳ fic masterlist ↳ ship exchange ↳ taglist
There was a sense of melancholy in the air, as there always was around courting season. Loki Laufeyson always looked forward to the season ending so he didn’t have to endure his father’s disappointing stare any longer. (Find a nice girl to settle with. Fulfill your divine purpose)
Currently, Loki is spread on the chaise lounge in the living room. The book in his hands was one on botany. Not because he had any genuine interest in it— he just needed anything to distract himself. It was at this moment his brother entered.
"The season is starting," Thor stated, fixing his sleeves as he boasted a bright smile. "We'll see what society offers." Loki ignores him, continuing to read. Thor walks over and takes the book out of Loki's hand.
"Do you ever listen to me?"
"Only when you're interesting," Loki winks, sitting up with a heavy sigh. He stretched his neck, sitting up like a cat as Thor, with his ever-glowing smile, sat down next to him.
"I have a good feeling," Thor chimed. Loki suffered an eye roll, being subjected to the same thing Thor has participated in yearly. Supposedly, the Queen met with all the girls today to determine the Diamond of the Season. Then, later in the week, the first ball would be held. Time spent where Loki yearned for more substantial conversation and less pleasantries. He could be charming if he wanted to be, but most of the tone was dreadfully dull.
Luckily, you felt the same way.
Waiting to be presented to a woman who had never met you did nothing to quell your nerves. Indeed, it was embarrassing for your ego to watch a woman turn her nose up at your countenance as everyone else watched. How your sister had endured the past two seasons was beyond you.
You had talked your grandmother out of using feathers in your look because even if you didn't care much about finding a husband, you refused to resemble a pigeon in public. Instead, you wore your hair half up and pinned away with a jewel-encrusted pin. Your gown was simple, but your gloves exasperated the sweat on your palms. You envied men and the ability to wear trousers.
When it was your turn to walk through the double doors and make eye contact with the Queen, you resisted the urge to grimace. Already, you could see chatter amongst the ton as you slowly walked up to the dias where Her Majesty sat. Her curious, calculating eyes watched your every movement. One of the women standing on the side, Lady Page (a snooty gossip, as your Grandmother claimed), looked at you with such distaste that you couldn't find the urge to send her a wink. The tiny gasp she let out was worth the lashing you'd experience from your grandmother later.
The Queen didn't look amused, but frankly, she never did. You broke into a curtsy as you reached the end of the walkway, averting your eyes out of politeness.
"What's your name?" The Queen inquired, lips pursed.
"Miss Y/N Chilton, Your Majesty," you responded, keeping your posture straight as your grandmother ordered. The Queen glanced towards Lady Page, a hint of a smile on her lips. She may have a sense of humor. She nodded your dismissal, and you made as quick of an exit as you could.
You (thankfully) were not named Diamond the Season. Your Grandmother contributed your "obnoxious" behavior to that decision, but you couldn't care. You already have to suffer through an entire season; you didn't also want to deal with the pressure that being a Diamond entailed.
The first event arrived sooner than you wanted. Ivy insisted on helping you get ready, citing your “total blindness for fashion” as a desperate call for help. You weren’t blind to fashion; it wasn’t your top priority.
“I wish you’d wear periwinkle more; it’s such a lovely color on you,” Ivy sighed as she messed with your hair. She had dressed you in a short-sleeved periwinkle gown with gossamer pleats and tiny embroidered Lily of the Valleys. It wasn’t too obnoxious, which you appreciated. She was curling your hair to a cascade of locks on top of your head.
“I wear periwinkle,” you sigh, opening and closing cases of rouge on top of the vanity.
“You’re so pretty, you know?” Ivy took a star-crested pin, clipping it into place. “You’ll find a husband in no time.”
“I don’t want a husband.”
“Yes, you do,” your sister sighed, patting your shoulders. She had made you look ethereal so unlike yourself. You had tendrils framing your face, sparkles clipping the rest of your hair away. You looked effortless in a way you didn’t feel. “You just don’t want a typical husband. You want someone who’ll see and appreciate your brain more than anything else.”
You placed a hand on top of your sisters, tears beading in your eyes. She was always so kind and knew you so well. She deserved a husband, not you, but she was flighty and a bit of a klutz in a way men found annoying and not endearing. You wished for her to find a prince and nothing else.
“Will Grandmother be mad if I bring a book to the function?” You whisper, a sly smile on your lips. Ivy lets out a wholehearted laugh, helping you up.
Your Grandmother was already waiting outside, with a tight-lipped look at your “tardiness.” You just rolled your eyes, climbing in after your sister and clasping your hands uneasily on your lap. Even if you didn’t care, social situations still made you nervous.
Lady Danbury was holding the ball, a grand affair everyone discussed. Footman received carriages with top-tier manners, and the inside of the event was decked in silver drapes, twinkling white lights, and an assortment of champagnes. You almost tripped on your skirts down the stairs, receiving your card from a chuckling servant. When your Grandmother wasn’t looking, you filled out the card so no men would ask you to dance.
Ivy was in her element as she floated between families, making conversation. It was too many people all at once. Still, you smiled to yourself, maneuvering out of the room and finding an alcove outside on the terrace. It was too stuffy inside, too many bodies twirling around each other. The outside had enough chill to soothe your warmed skin but not too cold to give you goosebumps. You found a bench and perched yourself on it, hiking up your skirts to cross your legs. You preferred reading outside anyway. It was a reminder of the outside world. It’s easy to get lost in your head, which is precisely what you did.
“Do most ladies hide outdoors with their nose in a book?” A voice asked, stirring you from your thoughts. You looked up to observe a man, arms crossed, an eyebrow cocked in amusement. He was dressed in emerald green, which complemented his eyes.
“Do most gentlemen spy on unassuming women?” You narrowed your eyes, putting your bookmark in your book and closing it.
“Such cheek from a lady of the ton,” he smirked, stepping towards you. “Weren’t you raised with manners?”
“I never claimed to be,” you blinked, all doe eyes as if playing the part of delicate lady and not utterly defiant granddaughter.
“Why aren’t you enjoying the festivities?” He inquired, moving to clasp his hands behind his back.
“I could ask you the same question.”
“I asked you first.”
“I don’t like dancing,” you answered sincerely. He just looked at you with amusement in his eyes. He found your defiant nature funny, aggravating you more than it should. You were about to respond with a retort, but you were again interrupted by another baritone voice.
"Brother! I've been searching for you," a man said, emerging from one of the doorways with a charismatic smile. He looked nothing like his brother. While your intruder was all lean limbs, raven black hair, and a sarcastic smirk, this new man was personified by muscle and masculinity. The comparison ended with them being both devilishly handsome. "Are you harassing this fair lady?" he asked, gesturing towards you.
"Yes, he is; he's quite annoying," you smiled, enjoying the exasperated eye roll you earned.
"Loki tends to get that reaction from people," the man chuckled. "I am Thor Odinson, and you are...?"
"Y/N Chilton," you bowed your head politely. Thor took your hand, kissing the back of your knuckles. You knew the Odinsons, one of the most revered families in the ton. And you happened to be verbally sparring with one of them. Your grandmother will kill you if you discover your irreverence.
"Lady Chilton, I see your dance card is already occupied," Thor gestures to the slip of paper attached to your wrist. "Otherwise, I would've invited you for a dance."
"I filled it out myself," you admit bashfully. "Anything to avoid participating."
Thor let out a hearty laugh at that.
"Very clever," Loki tutted, and you sent him a pointed glare that furthered his amusement.
"Would you care to join me for a waltz, Ms Chilton?" Thor asked, extending his hand. You took it gratefully.
"It would be my honor," you bowed, taking your book with you as Thor whisked you inside. You had half a mind to turn around and wave brattily at Loki, but when you looked back, he was already gone.

For the pretty asks galaxy, diamond, valentine and 1975💞
Thank you so much for the ask!! 🥰
galaxy; what fascinates you?
*giggles wickedly* Oh, what do I answer for this?
I guess I’d go with psychology. I LOVE how the human mind works. Especially when it comes to mental illness and cognitive disorders. Like UGH! It just scratches this little itch in my brain that hungers to understand myself
Anyway, psychology and video game lore are my two biggest interests at any given moment, so talk to me about either of those things and I’ll probably adore you forever
diamond; favorite color?
Golden yellow or lavender purple, specifically because I love yellows and because I read somewhere that lavender is the gayest color
valentine; best gift you’ve ever received?
Errrr… Damn this is a hard question. Um, the one that’s coming to mind is my ex-best friend made me some hand drawn anime pins for an anime I was obsessed with years ago
1975; if you could time travel to any time period, what would it be and why?
I’m fully convinced that despite all the problems it would entail, I was fully supposed to live in a small farmhouse in the 1800s. Like, free from high societal expectations, born to daydream while doing manual labor, and dying at a young age after raising like, four to six small children. Idk it just makes sense to me

12670.102 - ART
Silver flash of huge diamond rings caught my eye,
Sunlight fragmenting into a thousand jewels across the water's skin.
It's quiet here now in winter
Day by day, beauty entails the world.
Life insurance is now over,
I'm achieving all the purposes
And I don't know what that means.
A pearl. It is black in color, but not completely so. It came with a gift. An explanation of sorts.
413.221 - DRAFT [SIMPLIFIED]
A transit vehicle, optimized to be easily piloted by two people. Can hold six. Maximum six volume-units of dedicated cargo storage. Aerial locomotion mechanism with ground backup. Void cell energy. Inspect every twenty moons. Hardened Palm Metal plating, Three Tonics Metal frame; can withstand direct rainfall. Plain-text Data Pearl viewer.
COMMENT: Hello! Apologies for the inconvenient drop-off, but it was the best I could do without arousing suspicion. I strongly advise that you fly below the cloud-line so that inter-superstructure runners can't see you; this car is more than capable of being in the rain. Inside you will see that I have also put some supplies for construction and medicine. You should be able to fly back to your base. I'll keep one of my little guys in there so I can keep tabs on you. Best of luck! GROCL
A pearl. Yellow in color. Perhaps it is an Overseer's feed?
501.336 - FEED [AUDIOVISUAL]
TWO FIGURES SIT INSIDE A MASS-TRANSIT MACHINE, SHRUNKEN DOWN FOR EASY OPERATION.
Ground Lines into Coral, we are forever grateful!
There are so many avenues now open to us—so many things we can now do!
Like relocating in case of a disaster?
That won't happen.
I didn't just study Void Fluid, you know.
In my own studies, I've seen personal fallability be the critical issue too many times.
Don't think that any algorithm is flawless.
I've made enough mistakes in my life to know that I haven't made one now.
You're insufferable.
So are you.
THE TWO SHARE A MOMENT OF CLOSENESS. THE SILENCE IS BROKEN BY ONE'S INTERJECTION.
Do you know how to fly this?
Yes. We used to get trained as reserves rather infrequently.
Just do as I say and we'll be home fast.
Try not to mess up.
Whatever you say.
END OF FEED
how did this get here?
are there others like it?
there
A pearl. Yellow in color. It is much like the last.
998.317 - FEED [AUDIO]
Shit.
I was right.
This isn't the time for that. We need to make a plan.
I sent Ten Hammers, Pins Within to find a surface map. I doubt we have one.
They have a fixtured roof still. If the water doesn't rise, it can hold for a dozen more rains at least.
I'll go and tell them to gather in there. What are you trying to say your plan is?
We fly until it stops raining. That is where we set up next.
END OF FEED
A pearl. Yellow in color.
1257.095 - FEED [AUDIO]
Hurry!
One moment! I am retrieving a sack of scale bark.
Seeds—
I have it.
A HEAVING NOISE IS FOLLOWED BY THE DULL CLANK OF METAL AND THE HOLLOW NOISE OF BARK
A DOOR ENGAGES THEN LOCKS SHUT
That will improve relations with them.
A whole sack?
We gathered an excess this growth cycle. It's all new growth; it will taste better with age. I'll be sure to tell them that.
Now go. We don't want to make them wait.
END OF FEED
A pearl. Yellow in color.
1744.938 - FEED [AUDIO]
THE ROAR OF A STRONG FIRE. AN IMPACT IS HEARD. IT IS FOLLOWED BY SPLINTERING.
FOOTFALLS ARE NOW AUDIBLE. THEY ARE FRANTIC, UNEVEN. THEY CEASE.
A THUD. MUCH MEATIER THAN THE LAST.

Fear will fade but the Fade is fear
Chapter 8:
If Mara was honest with herself, she had to admit that she liked the Hinterlands - no matter how much Varric complained about them. Around every corner, every hill, every riverbed the land vibrated with life. In summer colorful shimmering dragonflies buzzed along water's edge, rainbow trouts scrimmaged in the clear rivers and the air was filled with life. When dawn closed in the chaotic buzzing and humming of hundreds of insects reverberated through the air. There were dense, green forests, which softly nestled up against the upcoming mountains. Looking down the valley toward Lake Calenhad, the tree lines thinned out and made space for a rag rug of green and yellow fields. There was beauty in every season. The cold and unyielding Ferelden winter could show its charming site, too. The fallow fields were covered with a thick layer of snow that sparkled in winter's sun, like a white sea sprinkled with thousands of small diamonds. The meager trees and fir forests looked like someone had covered them in sweet powdered sugar and in between you could find the tracks of the local wildlife crossing paths. In winter, everything seemed so calm and peaceful - a silence found rarely in these troubled times.
Now, in the time of the first sowing, everything was in transition. It was the time of change when the first signs of the upcoming spring found its way back into the lands. Flora and fauna both awoke from their slumber. Mara enjoyed riding with the mild wind caressing her cheeks and the low rays of sun illuminating the path in front of her. For a moment, she could feel free. However, this feeling only lasted so long. She couldn't let herself get distracted. The land still suffered a terrible civil war and danger lured around every corner whether it was in form of rebel mages, crazed templars or ruthless bandits. The innocent civilians suffered the most. They had lost their homes, friends and family and had to flee without so much as the clothes they wore and the things they could grab.
Mara would've liked nothing more than just riding past the inquisition camp - just keep going, don't turn around and feel free for just a little bit longer. Theoretically, she could have done it. No one would've stopped her if she would just keep on riding. She could start her search for Marcus, eventually. However, although she could, she would not. It wasn't right to just bail. She simply could not ignore all that was going on and let down the people who depended on her, not even for a simple minute of freedom. With that in mind, she steered her horse towards the inquisition camp. Mara sighed und let her head hang low. Everything would've been much easier if she wasn't the Herold of Andraste. That title bore so much responsibility, hopes and expectations. Just thinking of it, Mara could feel her chest constricting unpleasantly. It felt as if her body couldn't contain her and the Herold at the same time any longer.
Although, it was not the responsibility that weighted her down. She had taken over responsibility in her past - sure - for herself, as well as for her companions and the people under her command. This time however, it was so much more. So much more depended on her and on her alone. She thought about what her uncle would've said about all of this, about what had happened and what she would need to do? It had been her uncle taking her under his wings so many years ago. He had taught her everything he knew and she had learned all his skills. It had been he taking her with him to Ostwick, making her a soldier and giving her a new home within the ranks of the town guard. It had taken her only a few years to climb the ranks and become a captain with responsibility over a handful of guardsmen and women. But the responsibilities the inquisition entailed on her were next level. Could she really put up with that? Could she accomplish what everyone hoped for? Could she live up to the icon they saw in her? Well, she would find out eventually, wouldn't she? She gulped down the lump that had formed in her throat and the grip on the reins tightened until her leather gloves gnashed audibly.
It will get easier as soon as we close the breach. It just has to. But one step after another: first recruit Master Dennet and then escort hin back to Haven. Then comes the next step and then the next. It's easy, really. It's a safe and foolproof plan. I just need to take it step by step.
Mara was ripped out of her thoughts the second she arrived at the campsite. She barely was off her horse as Leandra, the requisitions officer in charge of the Hinterlands, appeared besides her out of the blue.
"Herold, a moment please? I know you are right back but I have something that might interest you." Leandra said with a sorry smile while patiently waiting for Mara to dismount.
Leandra did mean well, Mara knew that. But it was so exhausting to fulfill all these requests and there was always something new they needed. She fought back the urge to sigh and put on a, what she hoped was a genuine smile before turning towards the still waiting officer. She grabbed the rains of her horse and headed off to the direction the other mounts were stabled - Leandra on her heels.
Mara softly stroked the neck of her mare wilhe walking. "What do you think, Kalina? Shall we hear what Leandra got for us?" The horse's answer was a loud neighing.
Mara had taken Kalina to her heart the moment she had stepped into the inquisitions stables a few days ago. There she stood in the very back box, a proud mare with a fur white as snow and sprinkles of grey on her flanks and neck. The mare's eyes were a pure and deep black, the mane was a creamy white and on her head, she had a grey, star shaped blaze. She looked absolutely beautiful. Mara guessed that the horse wasn't of pure blood. Based on the stately figure and the strong but lithe legs she would say the mare was a mix of Amaranthine Charger and Orlesian Courser. A beautiful and intelligent creature.
The moment Mara tried to step closer to the horse its ears rose in attention. The mares eyes immediately focused on Mara and it watched her in alert while nervously chomping at the bit.
"Careful Herold. Don't go too close. Missy there has a bloody temper and, a-and she's - she ist very stubborn. Doesn't like anybody getting too close. Has thrown off everyone who tried mounting her, so far."
Mara startled. She hadn't even noticed the stable hand cleaning one of the other boxes - she only had eyes for the white beauty.
"A bloody temper and stubborn you say, ey? That's something I can work with." Mara grinned at the seemingly confused boy.
The now Herold had spent most of her life surrounded by horses. The Trevelyan family owned and operated the biggest and most esteemed horse-breeding ranch in all of the Free Marches. When she was a little girl, she and her brothers had helped her father to take care of the horses and had learned from him everything there was to learn about horses, riding and breeding. Later she had trained the animals on her own which meant that she spent a lot of her time at the stables. That was until her uncle took her with him. In many ways, Mara preferred the presence of horses to the presence of people. Most of the times it was as if those creatures understood her - and she understood them.
Mara turned around and decidedly looked into the black eyes of the mare. She slowly lifted her not glowing hand in a non-threatening manner. Mara waited like that until the horse stopped chomping and its jumpiness subsided before slowly getting closer. Both kept their eyes on one another while Mara neared the box. Finally, standing in front of the horse Mara held out her hand in front of the horse's muzzle. She stared into those deep black eyes and waited. She didn't say a word cause there was no need of such. The mare looked at Mara and Mara looked back. It was as if they both were seeing each other. It was a tense situation. Out of the corner of her eye, Mara could see the stable hand curiously steeling glances from behind the corner of another box. It felt like minutes passed by and nothing happened until the horse let out a defeated huff and finally nuzzled into Maras hand. Mara chuckled to herself and the mare laid its heavy head on her shoulder. She softly stroked the creature's broad neck and whispered into its ear.
"Hi there, beautiful. Want to paint the world red together? Whaddya say - mi Kalina?"
As if agreeing with her, the horse nudged Mara softly in the side. Love at first side, one might say.
After taking the list with the newest requirements from Leandra and pocketing them in one of her saddlebags Mara tended to Kalina. She unsaddled her, brushed her thoroughly und inspected the horseshoes before getting a bucket filled with oat. Mara gently patted her horses neck and took a deep breath. Eventually, she wished Kalina a good night and dragged her heavy feet back to camp.
The next morning Mara, Cassandra, Varric and Solas left early for Master Dennets stables. With the first rays of sun barely making their way over the mountain, Cassandra had shooed them out of their tents. The four of them had traveled together quite some time now, so that a day-to-day routine had already settled in and it didn't take long for them to be on the ready. Only a few hours later Dennets ranch came into view and Mara couldn't believe her eyes. It was not what she had expected to see. Before them ranged a wide and huge paddock with at least a dozen gorgeous Ferelden Forder, Anderfels Courter and Free Marches Rangers. Already from afar Mara could see that these horses were excellent breed, in top shape and healthy. She had to admit ungrudgingly that clearly Dennet was a master of his trade. Mara would've liked to stroll around the paddock and take a closer look at the horses but they had something more important to attend to. The small group steered her horses away from the paddock to the ranch gates. A young woman, maybe in her early twenties, with dark and weathered skin, thick dark hair and a suspicious look on her face saw them coming close and went to meet them at the gates.
"Maker be with you, strangers. Whaddaya want here?" The woman greeted them with a stoic expression on her face. Mara dismounted and outstretched her hand for a handshake.
"Maker be with you, too. My name is Mara Trevelyan and I am here in the name of the inquisition. We are looking for Master Dennet. Are you Master Dennet, by any chance?" Mara smiled fondly.
The young woman seemed taken aback but nevertheless took Maras hand with a firm grip. "Oh my, the inquisition, really? Your arrival in the Hinterlands already made it's rounds. We were wondering when you might show up." The woman shrugged. "I'm sorry to disappoint you but I'm not the master of these stables. You're looking for my father. He's up at the house." She pointed up ahead to a bigger wooden cabin uphill. "You can leave your horses with me. I will be at the stable on the left." The woman took the reins of their horses and was just about to lead them away as she stopped and turned around. "Oh, ehm, I'm sorry. Where are my manners? I'm Seanna, by the way. Ehm, so, good luck and don't be too disappointed." She gave them one last sorry look before vanishing into the stables.
"Nice meeting you, Seanna and thanks." Mara shouted back at the disappearing woman and frowned. That was kinda strange. They don't seem that much thrilled seeing us around. I wonder why? hmmm? She would found out soon enough. She sighed audibly and signaled her companions to follow her to the farmstead. After meeting Seanna, Mara wasn't so sure anymore if it would be a piece of cake to convince Master Dennet on helping them. Nevertheless, she would not yield before trying. Those magnificent horses would be a huge asset for the inquisition.
An older man was sitting on a simple wooden bench in front the house with his back to the wall and leisurely smoking his pipe. Master Dennet was about sixty summers old, his skin was wrinkled and of a warm brow color. His very short hair and well-trimmed beard were already mostly light grey. Overall, he looked kind and openhearted with his eyes closed and enjoying the rays of a late winter or early spring sun. As he noticed them approaching he opened his eyes with a heavy sight, stood up cumbersomely and knocked out his pipe.
"So you're the inquisition, eh?" The old man grumbled.
Although it was a question, it sounded more like a statement. Before Mara or anyone of the others could answer, Master Dennet gestured them to follow him inside the house. Once behind closed doors, Mara set for an introduction but Dennet left her no time to talk.
"Listen inquisition. I already know what you are here for. You're looking for mounts." He paused dramatically. "My answer is No. I can't just give you hundreds of the finest horses in Ferelden down the road like you'd send a letter. Every bandit in the Hinterlands would be on them like flies on crap. Look, I do not doubt your noble motives but those horses are my life and that of my family. They're our means of existence. Times are already bad as they are 'cus of this damn war. So pardon me for not being able to just give 'em away. I already have given enough." The last part he muttered more to himself but Mara heard it nonetheless. Dennet then turned his back on them, signaling them that this conversation was over and that they could now leave.
"Well then Master Dennet, we're terribly sorry for interrupting your very busy day. If you change your mind, we are staying close by." Varric said from his position near the door. Obviously, he thought it best to adjourn the matter and rethink their possibilities instead of wasting time. She looked over to Cassandra who had taken a step closer. The seeker looked utterly annoyed and was clearly in a bad mood. Mara knew that she needed to do or say something before the seeker could word her protests. Furthermore, she would not let the horse master from the hook that easy. She still was a Trevelyan and now was the time to use this to her advance.
"I... Well, I can understand why you won't part with your animals. They are all beautiful and marvelous creatures. It would be inexcusable if they ended up as a cold winter's breakfast for those thugs. I wouldn't want that either." Mara consented. Cassandra and Varric looked at her quizzically whereas Dennet slowly turned around with crossed arms and one eyebrow raised as if he wanted to say Now I'm curious Mara cleared her throat somewhat abashed.
"I mean, I already had the chance to take a look at your breed while riding past your paddocks. I particularly noticed your Ferelden Forder. Truly amazing creatures. They have a strong neck, and their throat letch isn't too dominant. Their withers are well developed, too. All together good indicators for fast and also sturdy mounts - and that's not all. One can see that your horses are tended to with great diligence, the best care and a lot of love. Their fur gleamed in the sun and it looked clean and smooth. Allow me to ask; what do you feed them that makes the color of the fur that intense and healthy? Is it barley, oat or maybe a mixture of both?"
Mara felt giddy and tense both at the same time. She didn't need to feign interest - everyone who knew a thing or two about horses could see that Denntes mounts were top-notch. She really was fascinated of Denntes great work. She grew up on a horse ranch and therefore knew such great animals needed to be honored. And if her enthusiasm could convince Dennet to help them, the better.
My, my, inquisition! Who would've thought that you know so much about horses? If you really must know it, I feed oats, hey with herbs and if possible fresh vegetables like carrots or apples. But you must be careful not to..."
"By the Maker, really Herold? We don't have time for this. Urgh" Cassandra cut Dennets words short and she sounded really annoyed and impatient.
Mara blinked two times at her companion, startled by her sudden outburst before she could regain her senses. "Cassandra, I can understand that you are stressed." She leaned in closer and whispered to the Seeker. "Trust me, I have an idea how we get the horses and the stable master. The Travelyans own the best stables and horses in the Free Marches and are prized breeders for I-don't-know-how-much generations. If I can convince Dennet that his horses won't lack anything and that the family and stable hands will be employed and paid, he should be open-minded enough to join us."
"Hah, there you go Seeker. Relax and let the lass do her thing." Varric laughed, standing close enough to listen in on the whispered conversation. Varric loved pulling Cassandras leg but Mara feared that she someday would accidentally rip off his head for it. Solas, as always, just watched the whole show attentively with his wise eyes while leaning against the wooden wall with his arms crossed. He had barely spoken a word the whole time, until now. "Herold, if you mind? On our way here, I noticed something interesting on top of one of the hills. It might be an ancient Tevinter relict, an astrarium I think."
Mara took a deep breath and thanked the maker for Solas quick wit. "Sounds good. If it really is an astratrium we should check it out and by 'we', I mean you. Aaaand it would be best to take Cassandra and Varric with you. Just in case, there are any bandits, templars or mages roaming the vicinity. You know, same old, same old. I'll wait here for you, ey?" She gave them a lopsided smile and hastily shooed them out of the house before Cassandra could strike her down like a lightning bolt. The seeker was a good and trustful person and kind of a friend but also short-tempered and a bit scary (especially if Varric poked her patience). There were situation in which that combination was more than helpful, but now wasn't one. As soon as Mara closed the door behind her companions she turned around and gave Dennet an apologetic smile.
I'm terribly sorry. The Seeker's a bit stressed lately but she means well. So, where have we been? I'm itching to hear more about your work."
"You' a Trevelyan? Look at that. Should've seen it earlier, huh." The old man eyed her suspiciously and crossed his arms in front of his chest.
"Oh, so you heard that. Well you certainly have damn good ears old man. I take it you've heard all of it?" Maras smile faded and she watched Dennet with a stoic expression. Her voice was no longer playful but plain business.
Seconds passed by until Dennet suddenly relaxed and laughed. A deep, husky and wholeheartedly laugh. That was a reaction, Mara did not expect but she tried not to let her confusion show. "Ha! Don't gimme that face, inquisition. I'm not holding that against you. I must say, you're tenacious and it could've worked."
Could have? Great. So much for my plan. Well done Mara. She thought grimly. Wait a moment. My plan COULD HAVE WORKED. COULD not DIDN'T! That means he CAN BE convinced.
"So I assume - and please correct me if I'm wrong - you are not entirely against helping us?" Mara said carefully.
A sarcastic smile ghosted over Dennets face. "That depends on you, inquisition."
"That's something. Master Dennet, not only the inquisition and I would owe you great deal. You would do whole Ferelden a great service and thus, shall be rewarded generously if you decide to join us. I'll make it my personal duty to ensure that your horses receive the treatment they deserve - all under your supervision, of course. You, as well as your family and workers, would be provided with shelter, food and resources and..."
"Fine, fine, you said your part. Maker, it really seems you desperate need my help, ey?" Dennet interrupted her. He sighed, "Let's say I consider your generous offer, still I cannot leave the Hinterlands. At least not as things stand right now."
"Why is that?"
Listen, inquisition. Even if I come with you, I can't bring my family. I don't want to endanger them only because it seemed that they would've joined a side in this damn war. And I'm not given up on my stables here in the Hinterlands either. There are still people here that need us close by and this is our home." Dennet paused and gave Mara a firm look. "But I will help you with your mounts and the inquisition may have some of mine. That is only IF you can make sure that my family is safe as long as I'm away. Lately there have been more and more ambushes by those fucking bandits and as if that wasn't enough the wolves have gone mad and are attacking our farmers and their flock. Handle that and you'll get my support."
Mara jumped for joy inside but she had to play it cool in front of Dennet. She had to show that she took the matter serious and she had to stay composed. After all, she was or was believed to be the Herald of Andraste, public face of the new inquisition. "Ay Master Dennet. The inquisition will do all in their might to take care of that matters - I will do all I can to make this area safer, make sure that the people, your family stays safe. You have my word."
She reached out her hand and gave Dennet a firm look. The old man hesitated a second and considered Mara with small eyes as if he was gauging her seriousness. After what felt like hours Dennets face finally gave in and firmly shook her hand. "Ha. Good, you cut yourself a deal and I'll hold you to your word." He shook his head and snorted in disbelief of himself agreeing. "Ha. You are one stubborn kid, y' know - just like the old man William was."
Thank you Master Dennet for giving us the chance to make a difference out there. You'll see what we will be able to accomplish once... Wait, what? You knew gramps?

Alright, so. Life is interesting. Sometimes you live with parents that treat you awfully and you recognize that for what it is at the start, and sometimes you go twenty-four years thinking you had a happy childhood with unhappy moments. I know now, a few weeks away from my twenty-fifth birthday, that I didn't grow up happy. My mom was never the superhero I thought she was. I grew up constantly performing, taking care of my parents' emotional needs, sheltering in my room or the bathroom when I needed a break from my twelve hour workday, (non stop, no breaks, get the schoolwork done to her standards, go go go) and keeping my needs tucked away.
I grew up in the shadow of an infant, a sister I never had, a baby my mom had eight years before my existence who died eight minutes after her birth. Mom refuses to move on, sometimes talks like she's still alive, visits her in the cemetery often, (it's rare to go more than a month without a visit) and often compares me to the idea of a person that never lived to her tenth minute. I was never good enough. I never will be, because I can never be the baby she lost. She never would've put mom through what I've done, she would've been perfect.
I started seeing a psychologist about a month ago to help me process what I've been through. What my childhood gave me. What my mom is still doing to me. He's amazing; the work we've done so far is so useful, and it's only just begun. Today was the first day I cried in a session. I let myself feel whatever came up, instead of brushing the emotions away with laughter. Instead of being strong. I don't need to be strong. I need to be safe. I've needed to be safe for a long time. Now I have a family and a safe place... I can finally be. Whatever that entails.
I cried because... TL;DR, mom bought a pair of rings, and they mean so much.
After she lost my sister, mom got a ring with her birthstone on it: a sapphire. It had a couple diamonds on the side, gold colored band, simple, but very pretty. She had it at least thirty years before it was damaged beyond repair. A few of the prongs that hold the sapphire had been loosening for a while, some of the diamonds had been lost, so she wasn't comfortable wearing it anymore. Mom was crushed. She recently went to Europe on a Girl Scout trip, and found a little jewelery store in Florence, Italy. I didn't know this, but she was on the hunt for a new ring; one with my sister's birthstone, and mine. She found one ring with each, and brought them home with her. ... This sounds incredibly sweet, which it would be for a normal mom. However, two things. 1. Things like that are reserved only for my sister. She's never done something like that for me. Why now? Why now that I've moved in with my partners and am building my own life? (Hmmm.) 2. She wanted to replace my sister's ring, and then decided to get a ring for me. Once again, I'm attached to my sister. It always has to loop back to her. It can never be just me, just me and my mom. She has to be somewhere.
My psychologist told me about a past patient of his, who had a similar family story. One day, he asked the man what he would tell his parents if he could let himself feel his true emotions. The man said, "I would tell them... I'm alive. I'm fucking alive. Can't you see me???" I understand exactly what his patient feels. I am alive. I am here. Why is it that my life has been lived side by side a person I never should've known about? I'm fucking alive. I fucking matter. I'm fucking important. I should be a priority. ... And I never was.
I came home from my appointment, took a long shower, (I hadn't been able to since Saturday) and made... this.
It took five hours, but it felt good. I am alive. I am a priority. I am my own person.
It will take a long time to understand all of what happened. But I've helped build a family and home that I can turn to when it gets difficult. A real family that provides love and support. A home that isn't only a shelter from the elements.
Life is interesting.

Discover Your Dream Ring: Stylish Engagement Rings Trending This Summer
If your summer of love entails browsing for the perfect engagement ring or perhaps promise rings as a next step in your relationship, why not let your heart-shaped eyes lead you to a ring that captures your style and personal love story? Explore everything from natural diamonds to lab-grown diamonds or colorful natural gemstones in the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind ring.
By looking at a variety of options, you’ll get a clear picture of what you’re drawn to the most. Take a look at some of the trends in unique engagement rings making waves this summer.
Three-Stone Engagement Rings
Stylish three-stone engagement rings are timeless, often symbolizing your relationship's past, present, and future. This classic style gets a modern upgrade with different stone shapes and sizes, creating a balanced yet eye-catching design. A trio of round diamonds is a classic look, or you can mix it up with a different center stone cut, like a princess, oval, or pear shape, for a contemporary feel. Trapezoid side stones are another unique look you may love.
Unique Gemstone Engagement Rings
Pops of color make a bold statement, from beautiful sapphire engagement rings with a diamond center stone to fiery-red ruby rings in an emerald cut. Precious gemstones such as sapphires and rubies continue to be popular choices, especially if the stone holds significant meaning or is someone’s birthstone. Adding a pop of color gives a personalized touch to an engagement ring and may hold special meaning for you and your partner.
Vintage-Inspired Engagement Rings
For those who love nostalgia, vintage-inspired engagement rings continue to make a resurgence. These rings often feature intricate details such as milgrain edges, filigree work, and engraved bands that evoke the charm of bygone eras. Whether you prefer the romantic allure of the Victorian era or the geometric designs of the Art Deco period, a vintage-inspired ring adds a timeless elegance to your engagement.
Fancy Cut Center Stone Engagement Rings
Fancy cut center stones are also having a moment this summer, offering a fresh take on the classic engagement ring. Many brides-to-be are taking traditionally vertical shapes, such as emerald and oval, and turning them horizontally, or “east-west,” for a more contemporary feel. Other shapes such as pear, Asscher, and marquise are popular, providing a sophisticated look that can maximize the diamond’s brilliance and ensure a sparkle from every angle.
Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Rings
An increasing number of couples are turning to high-quality lab-grown diamond engagement rings, which aren’t distinguishable from a natural diamond to the untrained or naked eye. Lab-grown diamonds look nearly identical to natural diamonds in terms of quality and appearance but are created in a controlled environment, reducing their environmental impact. Lab-grown diamonds are available in a variety of cuts and settings, making them a versatile and sustainable choice for your engagement ring.
Design Your Own
For a truly one-of-a-kind ring, why not design your own? Many jewelers offer custom design options that allow you to create a ring that helps you shine. Start by selecting a loose diamond or gemstone, then choose the setting, metal, and any additional details. This customized approach ensures that your ring is as unique as your love story.

Discovering the Beauty of Lab-Grown Diamond Rings
In modern jewelry, lab-grown diamond rings are captivating the hearts of many, offering a blend of sustainability, advanced technology, and timeless beauty. One example that embodies these qualities is the Vintage Inspired Lab-Grown Engagement Ring. This exquisite piece features six pear-shaped lab- grown diamonds at the center, totaling an impressive 4.10 carats, complemented by six round lab- grown diamonds on the sides, adding up to 0.36 carats. Crafted in lustrous 14kt white gold, this ring is not just a symbol of commitment but also a testament to the marvels of modern science in jewelry making.
Vintage Elegance with a Modern Twist:
The allure of vintage lab-grown diamond rings lies in their ability to meld the charm of past eras with contemporary craftsmanship. The featured engagement ring epitomizes this blend with its three-stone setting and round shape. The total weight of the diamonds reaches approximately 4.46 carats, secured in a setting that highlights their clarity (VS) and color (F-G), ensuring that each stone sparkles with unmatched brilliance. This ring, weighing 6.3 grams, promises a significant presence and a comfortable fit, with complimentary sizing available. Lab-Grown Diamonds:
A Sustainable Choice: Lab-grown diamonds like those gracing this vintage-inspired ring offer an eco-friendly alternative to their mined counterparts. Unlike natural diamonds, which require extensive and often disruptive extraction processes, lab-grown diamonds are cultivated in controlled laboratory environments. This lessens the environmental footprint and guarantees a conflict-free source, positioning them as an ethical option for mindful consumers.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made? Understanding how lab-grown diamonds are created is key to appreciating their value and beauty. Two primary methods are used to produce these gems: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT).
CVD Diamonds: This technique entails placing a diamond seed within a chamber saturated with carbon- rich gases. Under high temperatures, these gases crystallize on the diamond seed, allowing it to grow layer by layer. CVD diamonds are known for their purity and ability to pass older diamond testers, which recognize them as natural diamonds due to their carbon content.
HPHT Diamonds: HPHT is a process that mimics the natural formation conditions of diamonds. It involves placing a tiny diamond seed in a carbon-rich environment. Under high pressure and high temperature, the carbon melts and forms a diamond around the seed. Interestingly, due to trace metals in the diamond, HPHT diamonds can sometimes fool testers into misidentifying them as moissanite, a similar gemstone.
Testing the Authenticity: The advancements in technology have been significant when it comes to testing lab-grown diamonds. Modern testers are designed to accurately differentiate between lab-grown and natural diamonds. However, as mentioned, older testers might recognize CVD diamonds as genuine. In contrast, HPHT diamonds could be misidentified due to their composition. This fascinating aspect of lab-grown diamonds highlights the importance of using updated and sophisticated testing equipment to ensure the authenticity and quality of the gemstones.
Metals In Time and Lab-Grown Diamonds: At Metals In Time, the commitment to offering beautifully crafted, ethically sourced, and technologically advanced jewelry shines brightly. The Vintage Inspired Lab-Grown Engagement Ring is just one example of how this retailer is at the forefront of embracing lab-grown diamonds, providing customers with pieces that are not only stunning but also responsible choices for our planet.
Lab-grown diamonds represent a fusion of science and artistry, making them a compelling choice for anyone looking to make a thoughtful and informed jewelry purchase. Whether drawn to the eco- friendly aspects, the technological marvel, or simply the beauty of the stones, consumers will find that these gems offer a brilliant alternative to traditional mined diamonds without compromising on quality or splendor.
In the enchanting world of lab-grown diamonds, mainly through exquisite pieces like the Vintage Inspired Lab-Grown Engagement Ring, one discovers a harmonious blend of past and future—where tradition meets innovation.
