The Do’s and Don’ts of Seating Charts

As the RSVP’s start to roll in, couples start to think about the seating chart for their wedding. Making sure each table gets along while also mixing up the groups, this could take a village! While this is the new couples’ special day and their enjoyment is first-priority, why not make it a positive experience for your guests as well?

The Don’ts

Shortly after my father passed away, my mom and I attended a wedding together. Our expectation was to have a great time, considering the fact that I love weddings as well as love planning. Wrong! This wedding was a typical Texas wedding and an example of what not to do with the seating chart. Anyways, I flew down to Houston and my mom and I drove 6 hours across the state to the family’s ranch. Since all the guests were traveling to the ranch, everyone was invited to the welcome reception, the rehearsal dinner, and of course, the wedding.  My mom and I sat with the same people every night and it was pure torture. My advice is to mix people up and get them a little out of their comfort zones. If you have multiple events, don’t sit the same people together every night. This will encourage the conversation to flourish

Let’s get something straight, I did say “mix it up”. But do not sit people together that have nothing in common. For example, you don’t torture older relatives with young, rowdy children (unless they are family of course).

Remember! Alcohol is involved people! I understand introverts like to sit with people that they already know, but a couple drinks in them, this becomes a worry far in the past. 

My parents once went to a wedding where they sat people together from the same town. Although this is a commonality, it doesn’t serve much good for a vibrant conversation.

“Oh your from Houston?”

“Me too.”

“Where?… Oh that’s nice”.

End of conversation. Avoid this and focus on who people are based on there interests…then mix them up where people are more aligned. This will go much more smoothly.

The Do’s

As said before, you want people that have things in common to sit together. At my wedding, I put a whole table of golfers together. I have no idea if they talked about golf the whole time or not, but they all had a wonderful time.

Also, consider where in the room you are seating people and what types of tables are in the reception area. Do you have a sweetheart table? Personally, I am not a fan of these because the whole room is staring at you. Awkward. A head table is great if you want to be at the front of the room and prefer to be seated with your wedding party.

I love the weddings where the wedding party is split up among the tables. Why? Because then everyone feels important. They are sitting with the best man, or the bride’s college roommate. This way, there is no desired table, location in the room, or favorites. If you spread the wedding party love, everyone will feel equal and I doubt people will have a preference as to where they are seated. Spreading out the bride and groom’s family is another way to do this. 

Always have a backup table to late RSVP’s! People could RSVP or never respond at all and just show up. That is exactly what happened at my own wedding. Have some extra space for these little surprises and everything will still run smoothly.

There is a dance to a seating chart and it will never be perfect, no matter how hard you try. Just relax and think about mixing people up for good conversation. You never know, a  friendship (or many) may even blossom from your wedding.
