In a bed made of flowers
I’ve always thought that flowers were underrated. They bring people so much happiness yet once they wither away and die, they get chucked in the bin. Or on the compost heap if they’re lucky. At least there’s one place in the world flowers are reaching their full potential.
Medellín celebrates flowers like no other city. Why, you may ask? Well, why the hell not! There is a method in this madness. After Holland, Colombia is the second biggest exporter of flowers in the world. And the area around Medellín is one of the country’s main producers.
To honour Colombia’s least famous export, thousands and thousands of people take part in Medellín’s two-week long festival, Feria De Las Flores. Check out this song which I have been singing for one week straight. Obviously only the “la la la la la la la la la la” bit, and the “flores” bit. Dan is trying to learn the rap.
youtube
From gigantic elephants made of flowers to sell-out stadium gigs headlined by Marc Anthony and Colombian megastar Carlos Vives, this festival has something that will appeal to just about everybody, even people who don’t like flowers. As if they exist.
Everything appeals to me so we had a packed week with Dan being dragged from place to place, which is his favourite past-time. Our week looked like this:
Tuesday
Filming for local TV channel TeleMedellín. They filmed us looked at the Gigantes de Flores Exhibition in Plaza Mayor, with its impressive creations built from flowers, glue and (probably) a bit of cardboard. This week’s show was about how foreigners come to the city to celebrate the festival so we were more than happy to oblige.

Wednesday
Medellín’s Jardín Botanico hosted the annual Orchids, Birds and Flowers Exhibition in its already tranquil surroundings. If you ever wanted to see what a bed made of flowers looks like, then this was your chance.
Tumblr media
There’s free concerts in Parque Cultural Nocturno every night of the festvial. Wednesday’s theme was Bolero but they also had nights dedicated to music of the world, cabaret, tropical and lots more. Every night was packed and it was the same story for the other free concerts held elsewhere in the city.

Thursday
Metro Conceirto at Envigado Stadium. The Big One. And not free unfortunately but there was about eight different types of tickets you can buy. We opted for not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. Apparently VIP stood for View Is (sometimes) Possible (if you stand on 5 chairs). See picture below. But to see Maluma and Wisin (Reggaeton stars people!) and hear everyone madly singing every word of every Marc Anthony song was amazing.
Friday (Bank holiday in Colombia!)
The 20th classic and antique car parade in Medellín - I told you there was something for everyone. The cars are in perfect condition and the people driving them go all out with their costumes. It’s one of the many parades held around the city to celebrate the Feria, and I think one of the few where you can actually find a spot to see the action.

Saturday
We headed to where it all started – Santa Elena. Every flower grower, or Silletero as they are called here, opens their farm to the thousands of local, national and international tourists who come to look around, eat and drink lots of aquadiente. It was one of the best days I’ve had anywhere ever.
Tumblr media
You can just wander into people’s houses as they are getting their displays ready for the main event…
Tumblr media
Sunday
The 58th parade of Silleteros runs through the city and is so popular you have to get to route hours before the start. If you don’t, like me, then it’s a case of putting on a sad face and hoping for some kind hospitality from strangers so you can stand on their chair and catch a glimpse of the amazing procession of dancers, musicians and of course incredible flower displays. Or you could just pay to sit in one of the comfy stands.
Tumblr media
I am unable to use words to describe how beautiful and intricate all the displays were so if you’re interested then please have a look at our Flickr account where there are lots of bad pictures of all our activites over the past week.
This week, we are headed to Bogota for Rock Al Parque so we’d be grateful of any suggestions for where to go and what to see.
