The Gordon River Greenway Park in Naples Florida spans 140 acres and offers residents and visitors the opportunity to view wildlife and nature right downtown.

How Florida Tourism is Changing Their Strategy for Success Amid the Pandemic

The state of Florida, which relies heavily on income from tourists and travel, is being hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the tourism industry across the country has experienced a drastic decline in revenue due to the fears of the virus and forced shutdowns and closures of restaurants, beaches, and hotels. Lee and Collier counties in Florida are expecting a roughly 25% decline in tourist tax collection from FY2020 to FY2021, which is the major source of funding for marketing for both counties.

COVID has changed many things for these two counties, but the most important problem with which they are grappling is how to attract more tourists? In a time when so much is unknown and people have been cooped up for months in their houses, how can an industry re-gain the trust of their regular customers? In an industry so inherently tied to the pandemic, is it even possible to be successful without some sort of solution or vaccine? In short, they don’t have much control. The consumer sentiment in regard to the virus varies so greatly that the data is hard to follow, but regardless, Lee and Collier counties have drastically changed their marketing plan to adjust to these new normal.

Instead of mass advertising across the country, the two counties are utilizing target marketing to attract business. States like New York, a traditionally successful market for Florida tourism, is considered a “curve-ball” due to the extent of state-wide infections. Both counties are now focusing on Florida residents from other areas due to data showing that people are more willing to consider vacation options that are a short drive away, as opposed to flying, which is perceived to be riskier. 64% of the WFH crowd are looking to book a vacation between now and the end of the year according to Google. Collier county is utilizing “smart-TVs and internet connected devices” to target their advertisements to viewers who are searching for travel opportunities in their free time. This has become the new target market for Florida counties hit hardest by a pandemic.
