May 1, 2024
Luca shut the car off once he pulled into the parking lot and he hopped out of the car with Gemma, he grabbed her suitcase for her as she put her duffle bag on her shoulders.
“Have fun Gems.” Luca brushed back a piece of her hair from her face and softly kissed his little sister’s forehead. Luca had wanted to come out and be able to see her play but he was busy during the tournament and Gemma reassured him that it was no big deal.
“Bye Lu.” Gemma softly whispered as her big brother pulled her into a hug, she hugged him back tightly before pulling back and pressing a kiss to his cheek.
Luke walked over to the Fantilli siblings with his suitcase, “Hey Luca.” Luke greeted his friend with a clap of his shoulder before tossing his arm over Gemma’s shoulders.
“Hey Hughesy.” Luca fondly greeted him back, Luca was glad Gemma is so comfortable around Luke and Luca has always been able to tell that Luke adores Gemma and knows she will be in good hands with him.
“I’ve got her.” Luke reassured Luca.
“I know.” Luca smiled nodding.
Luke and Luca had no idea how much truth will ge those words once Gemma gets drafted.
Gemma smiled softly her brother before grabbing her suitcase and heading over to the bus with Luke. Gemma and Luke both gave their suitcases to the workers and checked in before they got into the bus.
Gemma walked down a few rows before plopping down onto a seat and Luke sat down next to her.
Gemma pulled out her phone turning it on and her phone flashed on revealing her lock screen, a photo of Macklin and her laughing with each other and staring at one another with their foreheads touching. Gemma starred at the photo and while she adored seeing a picture of Macklin, it just also made her miss him more.
“Is it going well with him?” Luke curiously but quietly asked her as some the rows around them were filling up. He remembered the first time he heard about Macklin from Gemma and the smile that was on her face and he had a feeling Macklin would be staying around and he was right, Macklin and Gemma got together a few months ago.
Gemma felt her face soften, “Yeah really well.” Gemma softly answered back with a loving smile. A small part of her was really nervous what was going to happen after the draft, it was most likely they would both be drafted far away from one another and she had no idea how they would do it but she shook off the thought not wanting to think about it until she had too.
“Good i’m glad you’rere happy with him Emmie.” Luke told her truthfully making her smile thankful.
Gemma perked up seeing a text come in from Macklin and her attention was entirely on her phone for the next thirty minutes not even realizing the bus had started driving and was already at the airport.
Gemma looked up feeling Luke nudge her and she looked out the window and realized they were at the airport already. She flashed a thankful look at Luke and followed him as she got up and grabbed her duffle bag.
Gemma followed Luke out of the bus and up the stairs of the plane.
Gemma followed Luke like a little duckling and Luke did not care whatsoever, He knew how hard it is to join a new team especially being so much younger than everyone else as she is not even eighteen yet and knows four people on the team.
Luke just wants to make sure Gemma is a comfortable as possible, she is so kind to everyone but she is still very shy and takes a bit to come out do her shell around new people.
Luke happily let Gemma have the window as he knows she likes it better and he likes the aisle to stretch his legs better.
Gemma grabbed Macklin’s black hoodie out of her bag and her over the ear headphones and slipped the hoodie on and started playing her playlist she shares with Macklin and leaned her head on the seat closing her her eyes as she brought her legs up on the seat and curled into a little ball.
Gemma quickly fell asleep under a minute and her head fell onto Luke’s arm, He just glanced at her and closed his eyes going to sleep too.
The plane took off and within a few minutes some of the boys were up and walking around, Matt looked over and noticed Gemma and Luke fast asleep, “Aw.” He mumbled thinking the two are both adorable more so Gemma.
Cole looked over and awed at the two as well.
Will, Gabe and Ryan were sitting around a table and heard Matt and Cole awing and they looked over seeing Gemma fast asleep with Luke.
“That girl can sleep everywhere.” Ryan shook his head fondly, He remembered all the times they found her sleeping, she even took quick naps in between intermissions and she is always napping in the oddest spots and in positions that never look comfortable.
“So can Luke.” Cole told them laughing into remembering all the times he has been around the Hughes and Luke is always sleeping, more often than not Luke is eating or sleeping.
Gemma and Luke were passed out the entire nine hour flight, neither of them moving once.
Matt walked over to them once the plane landed and shook his head surprised how they managed to sleep the entire flight, “Luke.” Matt gently spoke shaking Luke’s arm. Luke groaned and rubbed his eyes, “We landed.” Matt told Luke making him nod and Matt walked away once Luke woke up
Luke tried to stretch and felt Gemma still using his arm as a pillow and he let out a fond breath, “Emmie.” Luke softly spoke brushing her hair away from her face feeling her stir a little.
Luke fondly smiled, Gemma is the closest thing he has ever had to sister or a little sibling ever and he was happy having her as his honorary little sister and had a feeling that when Jack or Quinn meet her they would agree with him.
Gemma softly groaned as she woke up and set up stretching as she just slept nine hours in a little ball.

Not Evil [Raven/Seamus]
@aquamanandfriends Continued [X]
"Well I love cats, I got a kitten named Twinkie, and before you ask yes he's named after the actual Twinkie, I was eating a Twinkie when I named him, don't judge" Raven laughed. "But still refuse to be the old cat lady at the end of the street" she added.
"And no Seamus, you're not some arrogant asshole, I would tell you if you were, I don't sugarcoat things" Raven confirmed.
Raven looked to him. "Come on, I vented to you, trust me I'm a great listener. We only known each other for a short time but you give good advice, you at least stopped me from going homicidal on that blond bimbo in one of our classes"

Postscript
And some time make the time to drive out west Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore, In September or October, when the wind And the light are working off each other So that the ocean on one side is wild With foam and glitter, and inland among stones The surface of a slate-grey lake is lit By the earthed lightning of a flock of swans, Their feathers roughed and ruffling, white on white, Their fully grown headstrong-looking heads Tucked or cresting or busy underwater. Useless to think you’ll park and capture it More thoroughly. You are neither here nor there, A hurry through which known and strange things pass As big soft buffetings come at the car sideways And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.
Seamus Heaney, The Spirit Level
“Y/N! Come on!”
“Andy, it’s fucking freezing!”
“It’s not! It’s almost spring, come one!”
“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
He gave you a cheeky, toothy grin, the kind you couldn’t resist, that made your heart melt into a puddle.
Damn Andrew and his cuteness…
You heaved a sigh, started taking your clothes off. It was a bad idea anyway, that morning swim. Andrew claimed that he came to this spot often, that the sea was so nice there, that he had seen seals a few times, that the water wasn’t that cold, that it was good for you anyway to swim in cold water. You still wanted to go back to bed, it was barely eight in the morning, you were cold and wanted a coffee…
Why had you let him drag you into this anyway?
Oh, yes, of course, because you had a very silly crush on him, of course.
A crush you denied, by the way. You still intended to get Frank back, to get your life back. Andrew was amazing, but everything in your life was complicated enough, being with him would be insanity. And anyway, he probably didn’t see you this way at all… He was falling for someone else, remember?
You didn’t notice though, how Andrew stared at your legs as you took off your jeans, standing now in your bathing suit. You didn’t notice the way he gulped at the sight of so much skin revealed to his eyes, the way he looked at the circle of skin revealed on your back, the way he blushed at your cleavage.
Instead, you were gathering your clothes in a pile, getting your towel ready for when you would run out of the freezing water.
Andrew had turned around when you looked up again, and you couldn’t help the way your heart sped up as you stared at his naked back, took in the white of his skin gleaming in the sunlight, studied the dip of his lower back and the long line of his spine…
He took off his jeans and turned around, you blinked at the sight of his chest, of the hair that coloured his torso, the happy trail that disappeared under the fabric of his swimsuit…
You averted your eyes, busied yourself with making an ordered pile out of your clothes, hoping he wouldn’t notice that you had been staring…
“Come on! In the water!”
He took your hand to drag you towards the sea. An infinite of deep blue against the paler hue of the sky with accents of gold. Waves crossed the quiet surface, tainted it with the white lines made by foam. Elwood was already swimming in the sea, barking happily every now and then. The rough sand tickled your feet, made your toes ache a little as you tried to avoid sharp seashells, seaweeds and pebbles stranded across the beach.
You shuddered as your feet were covered by the cold water brought by a wave.
“Holy shite! Andy! It’s too cold!”
He merely laughed at you, not hiding his bliss at seeing you so riled up.
“Come on! It’s not that cold. We don’t even need shoes or gloves…”
“Only you can think that not risking to lose my toes and fingers to hypothermia is reason enough for me not to think the water is fucking freezing!”
“It’s gonna be fun!”
You mumbled some curses as you moved further in the water, but Andrew wasn’t dragging you onwards now. Instead, he was still holding your hand, standing by your side and waiting for you to move further in the water at your own pace.
You shuddered again as water splashed across your chest, but then decided to simply dive fully under the water. It felt like being stung by needles, but the feeling was electrifying too.
You emerged gasping for air, while Andrew was chuckling next to you. And then he disappeared under the surface as well.
Once you had begun swimming, the cold was bearable, the effort to fight the waves and the current enough to keep your muscles warm. You had to admit that you had a bit of fun, until the wind started to get stronger and your teeth began chattering.
Andrew noticed, frowned at the sight.
“Alright, I think we’ve had enough,” he said, and you didn’t need him to say it twice before hurrying to the shore.
You couldn’t deny that it felt good, that you had fun in the water with Andy, swimming and playing together, and splashing him with water. You were so cold now though, you hurried back to your towel and clothes, and tried to get dry as fast as you could.
“You’re alright?” Andrew asked, his tone worried now.
You nodded, although your chattering teeth didn’t allow you to speak.
“Christ, you’re freezing…”
You were too busy rubbing the towel against your legs to reply.
Even after you had changed back into your clothes, Andrew holding up towels to hide you as you changed and looking away with a soft blush on his cheeks, you were still cold. You were surprised when Andrew started vigorously rubbing your arms to warm you up.
“You’re okay?” he asked once more.
“Yeah, I’m okay. Just cold.”
“Didn’t know you easily turned into an ice cube!”
You didn’t think as you hurried into his arms. He simply seemed so warm now, wearing a green woollen jumper and a warm brown coat. He wrapped his coat around you, engulfing you into his warmth, holding you close.
You rested your ear against his chest, listened to the steady beating of his heart, although its pace was a little fast.
“You’re okay?” he asked once more, making you chuckle.
“Yeah, I’m okay. Don’t worry.”
“I’m sorry if you didn’t have fun…”
“I had fun. It was nice. Although, I don’t think you’ll turn me into a winter swimmer.”
“Apparently not.”
“I don’t trust you for anything else now, just so you know. You have lost my trust. When you say ‘fun activity’, I know now that you mean ‘trying to kill you with hypothermia’.”
He laughed at that.
“So… you won’t come to my place tonight, then? A shame… I’ve bought everything to make you a pizza.”
“You mean… you actually making a pizza from scratch?”
“Yep.”
“I will reevaluate my trusting issues because that sounds bloody delicious…”
He laughed, the sound bright and merry in the cold wind of morning. You didn’t know how he did it so often, coming here before work to swim several times a week.
You felt him resting his lips on the top of your head, but didn’t acknowledge the gesture, didn’t think about it too much. You closed your eyes, feeling much better already…
Until Elwood finally joined you, and decided to dry his fur right next to you, sending droplets of water everywhere.
“Elwood!” Andrew complained, but you merely laughed, hiding into Andrew’s coat for protection. ‘Christ… you have no manners!”
He started laughing as well, being careful to keep you close.
“What about we grab some coffee before heading to work?” he asked into your hair, the warmth of his breath contrasting with the cold wind.
“Oh yes! And I’ll buy a muffin!”
He chuckled at that.
“I’ll buy you one. My treat, for thanking you for coming with me today.”
“I hate you a little for how cold that was. But it was fun, and invigorating. I get why you like doing it. I will… let the swimming in the cold sea to you though. Next time you want company, I’ll simply wait for you on the beach and play with Elwood.”
“Giving up so easily,” he teased.
“Say that to my fingers, they’re still numb!”
He took your hands in his, you were surprised by his gesture. He made sure to fully enclose them in his hold to warm them up.
“Better?” he asked in a soft, tender voice.
When you looked up at him, his curls were still wet from the sea, droplets falling from them and catching the light of the young sun. His cheeks were flushed with the cold, or maybe with something else too, you weren’t sure. What was certain was that he looked so handsome like this, his lips reddened by the cold tempting you, while you wondered if you would taste the ocean on his mouth if you kissed him…
His eyes were fully green this morning, leaves caught in a midsummer sun. And his gaze was so tender when he looked down at you, you wondered if Frank had ever looked at you this way…
Slowly, you nodded, not trusting your own voice. But Elwood started barking, bringing you both back to earth.
You took a step back, freed your hands from his gentle hold.
And you tried very hard, but it was difficult to slow down the beating of your heart.
Saoirse was struggling.
H-B had proposed his students an exercise today. They had to analyse a text, and could use their laptop to make some research about it if necessary. They could work in small groups as well. At the end of the lecture, they would combine their ideas, and get their professor’s feedback.
And everything was going well at the beginning, so much so that their teacher had stopped wandering through the classroom and was now sitting behind his desk, clearly working on something else given how absorbed he was by his screen. Only, Saoirse’s group was now stuck and running out of ideas. Flann O’Brien really was kicking her arse. Even Sean was struggling, and he did better than her in this class.
Sean… Mary, that piece of shite… she was hitting on him so hard, it was indecent at this point. It made Saoirse nauseous. And Sean didn’t tell her to stop, that he wasn’t interested, which had to mean that he was, indeed, interested. In Mary? Really? She was stupid. The only conversation she could hold for more than two minutes were about like… two subjects. Besides, they had nothing in common. Seamus loved rugby and hurling, she liked basketball. He loved cinema, she hadn’t watched a movie in months. She loved fashion, and Sean didn’t care about clothes. She was a rich, privileged young woman when Sean didn’t have enough money to pay for a new pair of shoes. Last week, she had spent half an hour complaining about the temperature of the private pool in her house, because it was ‘too hot to stay in for longer than forty-five minutes tops’. She didn’t care about classes, didn’t study much and didn’t care whether or not she would pass this year, when Sean was studying all the time…
What could Sean find interesting in her?
She sent him another of her disgustingly sweet smiles, and Saoirse was this close from throwing up… or punching her in the teeth, both options seemed plausible reactions.
“I think we should ask H-B… I really don’t know what else we can get out of this section,” Phoebe sighed.
Saoirse looked up, but their professor was still absorbed by whatever task he was completing on his laptop, and had stopped paying attention to his students.
“I’ll go ask him,” Saoirse offered, happy to escape Mary for a moment.
What could Sean see in her? She was dumb, and pretty, and rich, and carefree, and funny, and…
Christ, would he go out with her? Would he have a girlfriend? Why did she hate that thought anyway? They were just friends, he could date whoever he wanted!
And yet her heart sank at the thought…
She stood in front of her teacher’s desk, but he seemed too busy to notice her. She couldn’t resist taking a quick glance at his screen…
… and she was surprised to find that he wasn’t working at all, but browsing in search of a projector. Why would he want to buy a projector?
“Erm… professor?”
Andrew jumped, looking up at his student.
“Yes, Saoirse? Is everything alright?”
He hurried to close his laptop, clearly embarrassed.
“We’re kind of stuck… can we have a little bit of help?”
“Of course… of course…”
He cleared his throat, getting up to walk towards the small group. He was blushing hard, and Saoirse couldn’t help but find the sight adorable.
With their professor nearby, Mary’s flirting subsided, at long last. But once the class was over, that Sean and Saoirse were about to leave to grab a quick lunch before going to the library, Mary was back at it again.
“Sean! We’re going to a restaurant nearby with a couple of friends. Want to join us?”
He looked at Saoirse, who merely kept on packing her stuff in silence. After all, Mary was not addressing the invitation to her. She clearly only wanted Sean to come.
“Erm… we have classes this afternoon…”
“Oh, come on! You can miss a couple of lectures! It’ll be fun! Besides, I’m sure Saoirse will give you her notes, won’t she?”
He frowned hard at that remark, and Saoirse thought that it was because of Mary’s offer to skip classes. But she was taken aback by his answer.
“Wait… you weren’t inviting us?” he asked, making Mary laugh.
“I was inviting you, obviously.”
He blinked, then gathered his things again.
“Sorry, but I want to attend our classes this afternoon,” he declined, and Mary’s face fell.
“You’re sure?”
“Yeah, I’m sure. Hope you enjoy your lunch.”
He turned to Saoirse, who was slinging her bag over her shoulder.
“Let’s go,” he told her, and she nodded, following him outside the room without a single look back towards Mary.
“Sorry about that,” Sean mumbled under his breath while they started to walk down a flight of stairs.
“Why are you apologising? You weren’t doing anything wrong.”
“She was so impolite towards you… Christ, I knew she was hitting on me, but I thought she meant to invite everyone.”
“You could have accepted if you wanted to go out with her, I would have understood.”
“What makes you think I would want to date her? Have you ever listened to her? We have nothing in common.”
In her chest, Saoirse’s heart grew warm with contentment.
“Besides,” he added in a quieter voice, “I’d rather spend time with you, anyway.”
Her heart fluttered happily this time, and she pretended that their fingers grazing was just an accident as they both walked down the hall.
Dinner with Andrew was delicious.
The appointment with the tailor for Frank’s suit was approaching, and you were growing nervous, wanted to talk about it with him. Even if Andrew wasn’t so eager to get Sam back anymore, he still wanted to help you. You spent a long while talking about the upcoming wedding, about Frank, about Sam. By the time you had finished eating Andrew’s pizza and were slowly but surely emptying a bottle of red wine, your conversation had drifted towards other personal subjects. Your childhoods, your families…
You weren’t sure how you had found yourselves listening to one of Andrew’s jazz records, but you were now. You were the one convincing him to lie down on the ground to listen to it though. It heightened the experience, or at least, you claimed that it did. Elwood was unbothered by your antics, too busy playing with a plastic frog.
“I can’t believe you had to go through that.”
Andrew’s voice was quiet, barely audible above the saxophone of the vinyl playing. His ceiling had two long cracks running across its white, smooth surface. You studied their direction as you answered.
“Academic jobs are unforgiving for women.”
“They really asked you if you were planning on being pregnant in the coming months to accept you as a PhD student?”
You nodded, shuddering at the memory, at the humiliation that came with it.
“They didn’t ‘want to waste months’ if I got into the project and got pregnant. Also they considered that ‘if I wanted to have a baby, it meant I wasn’t prioritising work enough’. Of course, none of the male candidates had to answer any personal questions. I asked all of them. They were only interviewed about their knowledge in the field and their research project.”
“Fucking hell…”
“Yeah…”
You felt your throat tightening at the memory, at the sheer humiliation that came with being singled out because you were a woman, with being judged differently compared to men, with being reduced to a mother…
“What did you do?”
“I was too taken aback on the moment. I didn’t really know what to say, so I simply answered the question. I was chosen to get in. The same day, I had an interview with another team, one in Belfast. They were much nicer with me, didn’t ask me anything about me wanting to be a mother. So, I chose Belfast, left for Northern Ireland.”
“You were right to do so. Fucking pricks…”
He heaved a sigh.
“Did you report them?”
“They were the heads of department. They were the ones I should address the report to. What was the point? Besides, I was younger then, I didn’t know any better. I was worried about my career. I was scared.”
“The progress is too slow.”
“I can’t argue with that.”
“I’m really happy you didn’t give up, though. I’m really happy and proud to work with you.”
“Me too, Andy.”
You felt so vulnerable talking about this. And yet, you weren’t scared with Andrew lying next to you. The gentle music helped soothe you, open up pieces of your heart and soul that you longed to let out but had never dared to. Frank didn’t know about this story. You had cried so hard that night, on your own, and had never told him. You didn’t know why. Or rather, you did know why, but didn’t want to acknowledge that you shouldn’t have felt that way towards your partner.
You were worried he would not have cared…
“This is my favourite part of the song,” Andrew whispered, and you paid more attention to the music then.
There was such longing engraved in the notes, such nostalgia… you wanted to cry, or rather, tear your lungs apart, rip your heart out of your ribcage to make it stop yearning for a love you couldn’t have, one that you would likely never know…
On the cool tiles of the floor, you felt Andrew’s pinky finger brush against yours. You moved your finger to hold his.
There was a long silence, while you listened to the song. When Andrew spoke again his voice was shaking with emotion.
“Y/N?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you still love him?”
“What?”
“Frank. Do you still love him?”
You blinked, struggling to withhold your tears.
“Why are you asking me this?”
“I just… I just want to understand.”
“Understand?”
“Why he’s better than me.”
You frowned hard, turning to him.
“What do you mean?”
“Sam left me for him. You…”
He seemed to hesitate, change his choice of words.
“You still have feelings for him, don’t you? Despite everything that happened? I don’t really understand why.”
You set your gaze on the ceiling again, tore the words from your throat.
“You still have feelings for Sam.”
“I’m not so sure anymore.”
“Because you’re falling for someone else?”
“Yeah…”
“Who is she? The woman you’re falling for?”
He looked at you then, you felt his gaze on you. You kept your own eyes on the ceiling, though.
He didn’t answer. You heard him drawing a sharp breath, but then he closed his mouth again and said nothing.
“I don’t know if I still love Frank,” you answered truthfully. “But I still want the life I had with him.”
“You could have that with someone else.”
“I want Frank… I want my life back.”
Andrew’s stare disappeared, you felt it as he looked at the ceiling again.
“As you wish.”
“Andy?”
“Hmmm?”
“Do you think he could love me again?”
He didn’t answer, his silence spoke volume. You thought you would cry, but you didn’t.
“Someone else will love you, the way you truly deserve,” he spoke softly, his voice a little hoarse with emotions.
“The way I deserve…” you repeated the words to turn them in your mouth, taste their meaning and feel their weight, but he took it as a question.
“Deeply. Unconditionally,” he answered. “Religiously. Completely.”
“Do you really think someone could love me like that?”
He moved his hand to fully hold yours, intertwining your fingers together, and you let him.
“Y/N… I… I…”
He heaved a sigh. You heard him take in a shaky breath, but didn’t have the courage to look at anything but that crack running through the ceiling.
“Of course, I do, Y/N. Of course, I do. I know you are loved like that.”
Are…
You squeezed his hand, shuddered.
“I can’t wait to hear your poetry,” you decided to change the subject, feeling too vulnerable now.
“I’m so fucking nervous.”
“Don’t be! You’ll be brilliant. You were amazing that night, when you sang. You’ll be amazing at the reading too.”
“I’m really glad you’re coming.”
“I’m excited.”
“I hope I won’t disappoint.”
“You rarely disappoint, Andy.”
“That’s because you haven’t read my poetry yet.”
You laughed at that, feeling the atmosphere become lighter.
“I should go home, it’s late,” you reasoned yourself out loud.
“Hmm… or you could stay a little longer. We haven’t finished the album yet.”
You smiled, rubbed tender circles into the back of his hand.
“Besides… we might have a problem?”
“What problem?”
“I don’t think I can stand.”
You looked at him, at long last, frowning hard.
“There was a fight. My back vs the floor. The floor has clearly won.”
You started chuckling, but Andrew shook his head, although he was chuckling too.
“I’m not joking. I think I’ve thrown my back out.”
“Really?” you grew more serious.
“Yeah… really… I don’t think I can stand on my own.”
“Oh God! Christ! I’m so sorry, Andy.”
He chuckled.
“That’s alright, it’s not your fault. But… let’s not do that again alright?”
You got up, holding your painful back too.
“Oh God… are we really too old for this?” you joked.
“Imagine if you were my height?”
“I can’t, Treebeard.”
He chuckled, held out his hand.
“Please?”
You held his hand, carefully helped him up. He winced hard as he got to his feet, couldn’t stand straight.
“Alright, you should go to bed…”
“I’m okay…”
“Andy, you’re literally standing at a forty-degree angle!”
“I’m walking!”
“Go. To. Bed.”
“I was about to make a very dirty joke on that…”
“Thanks for sparing me.”
“You’re lucky I’m too much in pain to think of a proper comeback.”
He pointed at the kitchen.
“Third cupboard on the left. Painkillers… please…”
“Sure.”
You helped him to his bed, then went to seek his muscle relaxant and some painkillers along with a glass of water.
He was lying down again when you walked back into his bedroom.
“Stop feeling bad,” he admonished, reading right through you. “It’s not your fault. And it really isn’t too bad. I’ll be okay tomorrow morning. I just need my muscles to relax.”
“Alright…”
“Stop worrying. It happens all the time.”
“You’re in pain, of course, I’m worried!”
“You look cute when you’re like this.”
You looked away at his words, you noticed how he blushed before swallowing the pills.
“Do you need anything?” you asked him, but he shook his head.
“No… do you want to watch something with me?”
“It’s late, I should go home.”
“Oh… okay.”
He seemed disappointed, your heart grew warm at the sight, at the thought that he wanted you to stay.
“I don’t want to risk falling asleep behind the wheel.”
“You could stay. I have a spare bedroom.”
You pondered on the offer for a moment, but you yielded easily.
“Alright, I’ll grab your laptop. What are we watching?”
“Anything you want.”
“Something terrible then…”
“Why do you want to make me suffer? You’ve already broken my back…”
You laughed wickedly at him, but chose a nice movie instead.
An hour later, Andrew was less in pain, and you were fast asleep, lying by his side, in his bed.
He stopped the movie, grabbed his laptop, opened a word document. His back was still too painful for him to join you in Morpheus’s arms. Instead, he watched you as you slept, knowing that you would soon wake up again, apologise and be adorable in your embarrassment, and then you would get up and go to bed in the other bedroom; and he would regret feeling the bend of the mattress under your weight by his side, your warmth that spread through the sheets, the quiet rhythm of your breathing. But for now you were still there, asleep. Peaceful. Beautiful…
He could have said it. Tonight, he could have said it. Confessed it all. He hadn’t. He was about to let it slip between his fingers, but he was afraid to try to hold you and make you fly away instead. Just like a bird one would try to trap in a cage.
He stared at you for a moment longer, then set his gaze on the blank page before him.
He started typing.
I couldn’t utter my love when it counted…

paring : Ethan Edwards x fem!reader
summary : Ethan plays first game as a Devil in October 2025 after signing his entry level contract over the summer so his fiancée brings their three year old son to the game to surprise him
warning(s) : none really (a suggestive comment it were getting picky)
author’s note : i also had baby fever so here we are lol
༺═──────────────═༻
The day Ethan came home one afternoon and told her that he made the Opening Day roster for the Devils, there was excitement in the air. She couldn’t be any prouder of her fiancé than she was at that moment, except for maybe when he was drafted by the Devils in 2020. There were a handful of days between the end of the preseason and the start of the regular season so that excitement only grew as Opening Day got closer.
Ethan can’t wait to get on NHL ice with the Devils for the first time. He’s looking forward to sharing the ice with Luke and Seamus again for the first time since the three of them played at Michigan.
No one is more excited than their three-year-old son Chase though. He has told everyone at his preschool over the last few days that his “daddy is gonna be on TV. He can’t wait to watch Ethan play hockey on TV.
Or so he thinks.
She hasn’t told Chase yet because she knows he’ll tell Ethan but she isn't taking him to preschool because they're going to spend the day getting ready for the game. She's taking Chase to the Prudential Center tonight so he can watch Ethan play in person. Both of them have no idea of her plans.
Yes, Chase has seen Ethan play in college, but playing in the NHL is so much bigger than playing in college. Plus, she's not sure if he even remembers watching Ethan play in college. He was barely a year old when she took him to Tampa in the spring of 2023 for the Frozen Four.
Now he's three and all he can talk about is how excited he is that his dad is playing in the NHL. It makes her heart so warm and she can't wait to bring Chase to the arena for the game. Ethan's parents came in too as part of her surprise. All four of them will be at the glass for warmups to celebrate his first NHL game.
Her alarm goes off on game day at the usual time so nothing seems off to Ethan, though he's already up and in the mini gym doing his pre-practice workout by the time her alarm goes off.
At seven, she leaves her shared bedroom to go wake Chase up like it's a normal day. She throws on a hoodie on top of her tank top and boxer shorts she usually sleeps in before she goes to get Chase up.
She walks into his bedroom and he's already sitting up in bed like he's been up for a few minutes already. She turns the lights on and smiles. "Good morning, Chasey," she says.
"Hi, mommy," Chase giggles. "Daddy's music woke me up."
She leans down and presses a kiss to her son's head. "I'll let daddy know that he needs to turn down the music in the morning so he doesn't wake you up," she promises. "Should we go tell him to turn it down?"
Chase nods and sprints out the door at the suggestion. She lays out his outfit for the day and quickly walks out after him. When she gets down the hallway to the gym, Ethan has Chase in his arms and Chase is hugging his dad.
"Good morning, buddy," Ethan greets Chase. "Sleep well?"
"As well as I could with your music too loud," Chase comments. She covers her mouth with a smile as she watches her fiancé and son. "Mommy said she'll tell you to turn it down."
Ethan smiles and turns his attention to her. "Did she?" he asks. "I'll make sure keep it down in the mornings when you're sleeping, okay?"
Chase smiles and hugs his dad. She bites her lip and looks at her boys. It's the little things that make her happy, and watching her son and her fiancé together makes her incredibly happy.
"Chasey, why don't you go get ready?" she suggests. "I'll make sure you get to say goodbye to daddy before he leaves for practice. I laid out your jersey so you can wear it to school today."
Their son nods and Ethan puts him down. Chase giggles and runs back to his room, leaving her alone with Ethan for the first time that morning. She kicks the door closed, but not all the way so she can hear Chase run back down the hallway.
She takes a few steps toward Ethan as he turns down the music. She wraps her arms around her sweaty fiancé's neck. "Good morning to my favorite NHL player," she comments. Ethan's hands rest on her waist. "Excited for tonight?"
"I feel a lot of things about tonight," Ethan admits. "Excited, nervous. I have been looking forward to my first NHL game and I wish you could be there so it's going to be a bittersweet moment."
"You know I'll be cheering you on from wherever I am, even when I'm home," she tells him with a frown to sell her lie. "Both Chase and I will be rooting for you tonight, and every game after."
Ethan shoots her a sad smile. She surges up to her tiptoes to press a quick kiss to his lips because she hates seeing him so sad.
When she lowers herself, Ethan cups her jaw and pulls her back into the kiss. It's a deeper kiss than the last one they shared and neither of them pulls away this time. Her arms slide from around his neck to around his bare torso so he can't go very far.
"I'm so proud of you," she mumbles against his lips.
He hums and deepens the kiss even more. She laughs as Ethan's fingers curl in her messy locks. "Love you," Ethan tells her between kisses. "Both of you."
There are quick footsteps in the hallway so she pulls away quickly. Ethan runs his fingers through his hair as they step away from each other so they don't traumatize their three-year-old. "Mommy, can we have chocolate pancakes for breakfast before school?" Chase asks as he pushes open the door. "Pretty please?"
"I think it's a special day so I think we can have chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast," she replies. "You look handsome in your little Devils jersey. Do you think your friends will like it?"
Chase nods and does a little spin. A little "Edwards 73" being on his back could make her cry. This is truly Ethan's moment, and she can't wait to celebrate at the arena with their son and Ethan's parents.
"I'm going to go shower really quick but we can eat some breakfast together before I leave for practice and you leave for school, okay?" Ethan says to Chase. Chase nods and grabs her hand. "I'll be out in a few minutes. Maybe mommy will let you help her with breakfast if you listen to her."
She shoots Ethan a look as Chase drags her out of the room. Her three-year-old pulls her down the hallway to the kitchen. She grabs ingredients for pancakes and the chocolate chips. As much as she would love to have Chase help with breakfast, she doesn't want his jersey to get dirty so she puts him at the table with some coloring books so she can cook breakfast in peace.
Down the hallway, she can hear Ethan in the shower as she mixes the ingredients together. Chase gets her attention to show her one of the pages that he colored. She tells him it looks good as she begins to pour the batter into a pan to cook some pancakes. She makes some smaller pancakes for Chase and full size pancakes for her and Ethan.
He emerges from the hallway in a Devils hoodie with his number on his chest and compression shorts that don't hide much. She's piling the already made pancakes on a plate for the three of them. She grabs plates out of the cabinet and puts them on the table for them.
"They look amazing, baby," Ethan tells her. He presses a kiss to her cheek before he sits down at the able.
"If I didn't have to bring Chase to school in a little bit then I would have cooked something healthier for you since it's game day," she replies.
Ethan grabs two pancakes and starts to cut them up. "It's okay," he says. "I'll make it up with a healthy lunch. I'm pretty sure that Luke, Jack, Shea, and I are going to lunch so I'll suggest something on the healthier side. Maybe Chipotle since I know Luke and Jack love it. I'll probably head to Shea's to hangout before the game, maybe nap. I don't know yet."
She cuts some pancakes up for Chase. "Sounds good to me," she tells him. "I think I'm going to do some shopping today. Grab some groceries, maybe some new outfits for when I do attend games this season." Ethan smiles at the last comment. "Then I'll pick Chase up from school at the normal time and we'll both be here for the game."
She hands Chase's plate to him and takes away his coloring book and crayons so he can eat. He shoves some of the pieces into his mouth.
Her phone dings with a text. She pulls it out of her hoodie pocket and glances at the nofication.
from: tara edwards - 7:38 am lee and i are landing in about 30 mins. has e left? does chase know about the surprise?
to: tara edwards - 7:40 am eating breakfast w the boys rn. eth is leaving when i "leave" with chase at 8. i'll tell him in the car about the surprise
"Who's texting you so early this morning?" Ethan questions.
"The groupchat I'm in with the other wives and girlfriends," she lies. "They're all excited for you to play in the game tonight and they wish that Chase and I could be there."
Ethan smiles and swallows a bite of pancake. "I'm happy you're getting along with them," he tells her. "Especially since I have no idea what's going to happen this season. I'm on the roster today but I could be sent to Utica any day. I think you could use some extra support just in case."
She matches his smile and nods. "It's nice to have a group that was so welcoming too," she replies. "The girls really welcomed us with open arms, and they adore Chase."
His phone starts buzzing and he realizes what time it is. "Oh, I gotta get going," he tells them. "It's almost eight and Keefe wants to hold a meeting before practice. I don't want to be late today."
Chase finishes eating as Ethan talks. "Time to go to school?" he asks. He looks at his mother.
"Time to go to school," she confirms. "All done?" Chase nods and she takes his plate. She grabs Ethan's plate as well as her own and puts them all in the sink. Ethan goes to grab his things and she pulls Chase out of his seat.
She holds Chase on her hip as she grabs his backpack sans lunchbox since he's not actually going to school. She slides on her slippers by the door as Ethan emerges with his new equipment bag with the Devils logo on the side. She smiles as he puts on his slides with his socks that go halfway up his shins. "Wow, you look like a hockey player on his way to practice, E," she teases him.
He rolls his eyes and opens the door for the two of them. Chase has been put down but holds his mother's hand so he doesn't go running down the hallway. Ethan follows close behind them.
Their apartment is on the third floor so they just take the stairs down to the first floor. Ethan struggles a little bit with his large equipment bag. He's good once he's on solid ground on the first floor.
Ethan throws his equipment in the trunk of his car. She stands next to him with Chase as the trunk is shut. He picks up Chase and holds him on his hip. "Good luck tonight, daddy!" Chase says. "Score a goal for me and mommy!"
"I always do, Chasey," Ethan tells him as he presses kisses to his son's cheek. "You look good in your jersey. Have a good day at school and I'll see you in the morning." Chase wraps his little arms around Ethan's neck. She smiles at the two of them.
He holds his extra arm out for her and she steps into a hug with her son and fiancé. Ethan presses a soft kiss to her forehead as she wraps an arm around his waist. "I can't wait to see you in Devils red, E," she tells him when she looks up at him. "We'll be looking for a 73 on the ice."
Her fiancé presses a quick kiss to her lips before he hands Chase over to her. "I love both of you," he says as he walks around to the driver's side of the car. "I'll be thinking of both of you while I play tonight."
She blows a kiss in Ethan’s direction, and Chase mimics her. She laughs as Ethan catches both kisses then gets in his car. She and Chase wave goodbye to him since it will be the last time either of them see him before they see him on the ice tonight.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Needless to say, Chase was estatic when she told him the plan for the night. In the car on the way to pick up Ethan’s parents, she told him that they were going to go to the arena to watch him play. She has never seen him so excited for anything in his very young life. He was even more excited when grandmom and grandpa got in the car. He wouldn’t stop talking about seeing Ethan on ice.
She leaves Chase with his grandparents to actually go shopping for groceries and an outfit for that night. She wasn’t lying when she said she needed to go pick up a couple of groceries and outfits.
Plus, she needed some time alone since the day is already super chaotic.
Ethan does text her after lunch to tell her while she’s out that he is going over to Seamus’ apartment before the game to hangout and maybe nap so she doesn’t have to tell his parents to take Chase out since he’s supposed to be at school. She tells him to let her know when he’s up from his nap, if he naps.
When she gets home, Tara and Lee are playing with toys in the living room with Chase. Her son greets her at the door despite her hands being full with bags. “Hi, my handsome boy,” she says when she drops her bags and embraces Chase. “What are you playing with?”
“Animals,” he replies. “All my favorite animals. Lions and wolves too.”
She smiles when she sees the setup on the coffee table. “I’ll join in the game in a little bit, okay?” she tells him. “I have to put away the food.”
Chase nods and runs back to his toys. She hauls the bags onto the kitchen island and begins to unpack them.
It’s not until she’s nearly done when Tara walks up to her. “He’s so excited to watch Ethan play hockey at the arena tonight,” she tells her. “It’s all he’s been able to talk about since you left. I’ve never seen him so excited.”
She smiles. “You should’ve seen him in the car,” she tells Tara. “I mean, he went from looking miserable because he thought he was going to school to being the happiest kid in the world when I told him. He was so excited and asked so many questions. I think this is going to be a core memory for him.”
“It’s going to be memorable for all of us,” Tara replies. “I mean, it’s Ethan’s first NHL game after four years of college. I didn’t think he was going to sign his contract for the longest time, especially after Chase was born. It makes me so happy that he has the life he wants. A beautiful baby boy, a beautiful wife-to-be, and an NHL career.”
The women both laugh and she wipes away tears that have rolled down her cheeks. “I can’t wait to see Ethan’s reaction when he sees all of us there tonight,” she says. “He has no idea that we’re coming.”
“Thank you for flying us in for this,” Tara says. “It means so much to me and Lee that we’re here.”
“It was no problem,” she replies as she pulls Ethan’s mom into a hug. “I’m going to start getting ready. I have one of Ethan’s Michigan jerseys if you want to wear it?”
Tara pulls back from the hug. “I think his wife and son should wear his name and number,” she tells her. “Lee and I will be just fine in our Devils gear.”
She smiles and nods. Tara goes back to playing with her grandson and she takes her outfit into her bedroom to get ready for the game since it’s about three. She was out a lot longer than she thought she was going to be so she has less time to get ready since she wants to be ready and have Chase fed by five.
Knowing that Chase is occupied by his grandparents and Ethan isn’t coming home before the game, she takes an everything shower and takes her time. She shampoos and conditions her hair, washes and exfoliates her face and body, and then shaves all necessary parts of her body.
She has some soft music playing as she showers to calm her nerves about tonight. All she wants is for Ethan to have the best game and all she wants is for her son to have fun at the game. She hopes for the best tonight.
A Devils win with an Ethan goal is the ideal outcome for the night, but as long as Ethan has the best time on NHL ice then she’ll be happy. If Chase has the best time at the game watching his dad then that’s a win in her book, no matter what the score of the game is.
Once she’s out of the shower, she wraps a towel around her body and secures it under her arms. She blow dries her hair before she leaves the bathroom.
She throws on a robe to check in on Chase and Ethan’s parents. Tara is in the kitchen while Lee and Chase are at the table. “Hi,” she says, confused. “What’s going on in here?”
“I thought I would make some dinner,” Tara replies. “Just some chicken nuggets before we leave. Chase requested chicken nuggets.”
She kisses the top of Chase’s head. “Ah, okay,” she says. “Thank you. I was going to make something before we left.”
“I got it,” Tara says with a smile. “Go finish getting ready. I’ll have some chicken nuggets for you when you’re done.”
She looks at Chase. “Are you being good for grandmom and grandpa?” she asks. Chase nods and looks up at her. “We’ll leave when I’m done getting ready. Make sure you eat whatever grandmom makes for you, okay?”
He nods again and goes back to playing with his animals with Lee. She runs her fingers through his dark locks and decides in that moment to take him to get a haircut over the weekend. She goes to do her hair, put on her makeup then get dressed.
She straightens her hair and does some neutral makeup when she gets ready. She puts on a pair of loose ripped jeans that she bought today and black ankle boots with a two inch heel to give her some height. She puts on the red Devils jersey that Ethan got her and tucks in the front of the jersey into the waist of her jeans.
“Mommy!” Chase calls. “I’m done my nuggets! Can we go see daddy?”
“Yes, Chasey,” she calls back. “We can go see daddy!”
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
The ride to the Prudential Center is the most exciting and nerve wracking experience of her life. Ethan has no idea that the four most important people in his life life are on their way to watch his first NHL game.
Chase basically vibrates in the backseat as she drives to the arena. He is very awake and didn’t take his nap after lunch because of how excited he is.
They pull into the player parking lot and sees Ethan’s car parked next to Seamus’. Chase is on her hip and Ethan’s parents walk behind her when they walk into a back door to get into the arena. She plays with her engagement ring as they get their credentials so they’re free to watch warmups with the other wives, girlfriends, and families.
“Have a good time,” the security guard says as soon as the three adults in the group get badges that hang on their neck. She puts her on and checks the time.
Warmups start in ten minutes. She quickly walks through the hallways with Chase still on her hip. The four of them come out at the glass in the opposite corner of where the players will come out.
She looks around at the stands that are filling up and puts Chase down for a few minutes since she’ll have to hold him once warmups start.
Fans are gathered at the glass to watch warmups. A sea of red, white, and black jerseys are lined up with signs. A handful of families, wives, and girlfriends are standing in the corner, and she sees Seamus’ parents at some point.
Then warmups start. Per NHL tradition, the rookies get a lap when warmups start. Seamus and Ethan take their lap before the the lights come up. As soon as they do, the other Devils players come out onto the ice, as well as the other team. Ethan takes a shot and skates right by the four of them without a second glance.
Chase notices though. He bangs on the glass in front of him and yells, “Daddy! Daddy!”
She pulls out her phone to get a picture of this moment. Chase has the biggest smile on his face as he tries to get his father’s attention. She even manages to grab a video of Chase banging on the glass.
Once the boys start stretching and taking line rushes instead of shooting pucks at the net, she notices Ethan standing with Seamus and Luke at the blue line. The trio talks about something but she has no idea what.
It just ends with Ethan looking directly at them. His jaw drops and he glances at his friends before he skates over to them.
Curtis Lazar stands at the glass talking to his wife and kids when Ethan skates up to them. Chase is moving so much in her arms that she stands him up on the boards. Lazar says something to Ethan that she can’t hear but it makes Ethan smile.
“Daddy!” Chase yells. Ethan waves at his son and Chase happily waves back at his dad. She has one arm around Chase so he doesn’t fall. She presses her lips in a line and holds back tears as she watches the interaction they’re having.
Ethan waves at his parents then makes a hand heart at her and Chase. She blows him another kiss and he smiles at her before he skates away to warm up. She smiles and watches her fiancé as he does his warmup routine.
The moment when Chase saw Ethan was everything she wanted. Her boys interacting at a game was a beautiful experience.
Tears roll down her cheeks and Chase asks, “Mommy, why are you crying?”
“I’m okay, Chasey,” she tells him as she wipes them away. “They’re happy tears, I promise. I’m very proud of your daddy. That’s all.”
Chase smiles and hugs his mom. She wraps her arms tightly around her son. Her eyes fall on Ethan as he takes a line rush. He is already proud to wear the Devils logo and she knows he’s about to put his all into this game.
Her son turns her attention back to his dad on the ice. He is so fixated on watching Ethan. It’s like he’s mesmerized by Ethan skating around on the ice. He passes the puck back and forth with Seamus for a second before he leans down to grab it.
Ethan skates back over to them and holds the puck up for Chase to see. He smiles and giggles as Ethan gets the puck between the net and glass. She catches the puck for Chase and hands it to their son.
While Chase is preoccupied with the puck, Ethan puts his hand up to the glass. She rests hers on his and smiles at him. “Love you,” Ethan mouths.
“Love you too,” she replies before he skates off.
One by one, players begin to leave the ice. Ethan is one of the last players to leave the ice and he makes sure to stop by one more time before he does.
She puts Chase down so she can get herself together. It was a very emotional moment for her, and it was everything she expected and more. She’s incredibly proud of Ethan and can’t wait to see what he does during the game.
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Because it’s so late when the game ends, she takes her son home to try and put him to bed. Chase isn’t going to sleep anytime soon because of how exciting the game was. He watched his dad score his first NHL goal from the blue line and a Devils win. It was a 2-1 win over the Wild.
There’s no way he’s sleeping any time soon. She’s almost a hundred percent sure that he’ll still be awake when Ethan gets home. It was truly an exciting and memorable game for her, her son, and Ethan.
Tara and Lee stayed behind at the arena to come back to the apartment with Ethan while she went home with her son.
She looks back in the rearview mirror at Chase and he’s holding his puck. He’s turning it over and over again as he looks at it. “Did you have fun at the game?” she asks.
“Yeah!” Chase giggles. “Daddy scored a goal for us.”
With a smile, she nods. “Daddy did score a goal for us,” she replies. “His first NHL goal. Are you proud of him?”
Chase nods. “Yeah,” he replies. Then he yawns. “Will I see daddy before I go to sleep?”
“I don’t know, Chasey,” she tells him. “You look a little sleepy.”
He smiles as she pulls into the parking lot of their apartment building. She parks the car and gets out before she gets Chase out. The spot next to her is still empty so Ethan isn't back. She assumes he's doing media since he had an incredible NHL debut. He'll probably be back late, but Chase will probably force himself to stay awake anyway.
She pulls Chase out of his carseat and takes the elevator up to their apartment with Chase on her hip. His head rests on her shoulder. He really is tired.
Once inside their apartment, she kicks off her shoes and walks right to Chase's room to at least get him into his pajamas. He puts the puck on his pillow. "I wanna sleep with the puck daddy gave me," he tells his mom.
"That's all up to you, Chasey," she laughs as she pulls out a pair of pajamas for her son. "You can sleep with the puck or put it on your table. Whatever you'd like to do, my love. Get changed and we'll wait for daddy to get home together, okay? Maybe watch his interview." If he did any interviews.
Chase gives his mom a little thumbs up and she laughs as she leaves the room to let him get into his pajamas. She changes out of her own outfit into one of Ethan's old Michigan hoodies that she stole and checkered pajama pants.
When she emerges from her room, she sees Chase on the living room couch already. She smiles and shakes her head as she joins her son. She grabs her laptop and goes to the Devils’ YouTube page to see if Ethan did any media after the game.
He did. The most recent video was uploaded ten minutes ago and is titled “Edwards, Hischier, J. Hughes, Keefe talk about Wild win over Minnesota”. She smiles and clicks the video. Ethan does his interview first, and it’s about two minutes long.
“Ethan, how did it feel to get your first NHL goal so early in the season?” one of the reporters asks.
“Really good,” he replies. “Takes a lot of pressure off of me early so I don’t focus on that and focus on bettering my play this season.”
He looks around as another reporter asks, “Was there anyone special in the building for your first NHL game? We saw you interacting with a group behind the glass during warmups.”
A smile grows on Ethan’s face as he says, “Yeah, uh, I had a few people here today. it was a surprise that my fiancée planned at some point. She flew in my parents from Canada and brought our son to watch the game. Chase had so much fun during warmups. I could see him from every angle on the ice and it was a really special moment for me to have them all here tonight.”
“Daddy said my name!” Chase exclaims. “He mentioned you too, mommy.”
“Yeah he did,” she replies. “Keep watching, buddy.”
The first reporter asks another question. “Do you consider your roster spot safe after tonight?”
Ethan shakes his head. “I will keep fighting hard every single game and practice to keep my spot,” he explains. “I scored one goal tonight and blocked a couple of shots throughout the game but I don’t believe my spot is safe. I’m aware I could be sent down at any moment and I want to make sure that doesn’t happen. As long as I keep fighting and producing then I don’t see why I couldn’t be on this roster for all 82 games.”
She smiles at Ethan’s response. He’s told her so many times over the last few days that he’s worried about his roster spot. It sounds like he knows what he has to do to stay on the NHL roster.
“How was the locker room before the game?” another reporter asks. “Was it intense or were the boys ready?”
“Oh, the locker room was buzzing before the game,” he replies. “I mean, everyone was ready to start this season on a winning note, especially after getting knocked out in the first round last year. I came in and realized what kind of team I’m on this season and I’m ready to fight with them to get further into the playoffs and get the Cup.”
The reporters thank Ethan and it cuts to Nico’s part of the interview. She pauses the video and looks at Chase. He has a proud look on his face, like he’s showing how proud he is of his dad.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, Chasey?”
“Will daddy have an interview after every game?”
“I think it depends on what he does during the game,” she explains. “If he scores then he’ll most likely do an interview. If he has a good game then he might do an interview. I don’t think it’ll be after every game.”
Chase nods in response.
The sound of the door opening sounds behind them and they both look behind them. Tara and Lee walk in first. Ethan follows them in his game day suit. Chase is off the couch immediately as he goes to greet his dad.
She’s slower to approach them so the boys can have their moment. Tara and Lee say their good nights and go down to the extra bedroom. Ethan picks up Chase and hugs his son. “Did you have fun at the game, buddy?” he asks Chase.
“Yeah!” Chase giggles. “Thank you for the puck.”
“You’re very welcome,” he replies. “Let me say hi to your mom and we’ll go put you to bed. Can you go get ready for bed? We’ll be right in.”
Chase nods as he is put down. He scurries down the hallway and Ethan turns to his fiancée.
She smiles. “That goal was very sexy of you, E,” she tells him. “I’ve never found you hotter than when you scored in the NHL.”
“I have a bone to pick with you,” Ethan laughs. “I did not know that you guys were coming to the game. Of all days to surprise me at a game.”
As she drapes her arms around his neck, she says, “I was able to surprise both you and Chase. I wanted the game to be memorable for both of you.”
“It was,” he tells her. “I’ll never forget my first NHL game. It makes it so much more special since you and Chase were there.”
She smiles and surges up to press a lingering kiss to his lips. Ethan’s hands rest on her waist and he holds her there for a second. “We’re going to end up having another baby by the end of the season if you think me scoring goals is sexy,” he mumbles against her lips.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world,” she tells him without breaking the kiss. “Having another little Edwards running around. Plus, I’ve always thought you scoring goals was sexy.”
Ethan laughs.
“Mommy!” Chase calls. “Daddy! Come put me to bed!”

sixteen
January 14, 2020
Cutter and Rutger’s family’s were taking a vacation up in the mountains and spending most of the vacation snowboarding and skiing, they were also spending Cutter’s birthday at the snow.
Cutter was peaceful sleeping under her many layers of blankets and was extremely warm in her little cocoon, she didn’t hear Rutger quietly walking into her room as he sat on her bed gently shaking her.
“Cut.” Rutger softly whispered making her groan and turn her head hiding her face in her pillow, “Come on Cutta.” He softly cooed making her groan and turn her head to him squinting her eyes at him.
“Happy birthday.” Rutger softly spoke leaning down pressing a soft kiss to her forehead making her cheeks flush a light pink.
Cutter hummed squeezing his hand in thanks and noticed how the sun was not even up and it was still very dark outside, “Why is the sun not up and i’m up.” Cutter grumpily grumbled.
“It’s a surprise, just get dressed in your snow gear and meet me downstairs.” Rutger told her before smiling at her once more before getting up and leaving her room.
Cutter groaned rubbing her face, Rutger was so lucky he is her best friend anyone else she would have smacked for waking her up this early.
Cutter very reluctantly got out of bed and slowly slipped on her snow clothes and excited her room heading down the stairs of the cabin seeing some of the lights on and she noticed one of the walls all decorated with silver streamers and a number sixteen balloons.
Cutter walked through the bottom floor and found Rutger in the kitchen, she smiled softly seeing a very cute cake and a bouquet of white tulips, her favorite flower.
Cutter picked up the car in the flowers and raised an eyebrow seeing they were from Rutger.
“Happy sixteenth birthday.” Rutger softly whispered pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek.
Cutter was glad Rutger was standing behind her so he didn’t see the pleased smile she was trying to hide.
“Thank you Rut.” Cutter softly whispered back grabbing his hand and squeezing it once before dropping it.
“Alright let’s get going.” Rutger told her walking to the front door picking his backpack up and putting it own before opening front door getting blasted with the freezing cold air.
Cutter shook her head fondly as she followed Rutger into the freezing cold, the things she does for her best friend.
Cutter followed Rutger for a good fifteen minutes of comforting silence as they hiked a small snow mountain.
Once they reached the top Cutter’s breath was caught in her throat at his beautiful the view was from up there especially as the sun was slowly starting to come up as well.
Rutger plopped down on the snow opening his backpack as Cutter admired the view in front of her.
Rutger pulled out two thermoses, handing one to Cutter as she sat down next to him. Cutter took a small sip not sure what was in the thermos but was pleasantly surprised it was her favorite hot chocolate, the one Rutger makes.
Cutter leaned her head on his shoulder she happily sipped on her hot chocolate with Rutger as they watched the sunrise together.
“Thank you.” Cutter softly spoke after a few minutes of peaceful silence, she was grateful to have someone as special and kind as Rutger in her life.
“Always.” Rutger promised squeezing her shoulder before reaching into his back pack and grabbing a small box and handing it to Cutter looking nervous.
“Happy birthday.” Rutger watched her nervously as she gently opened the small black box.
Cutter’s eyes widen in shock as she delicately picked up the small necklace, it was a star, her favorite star. Something she has never told anyone.
“How did you?” Cutter looked up at Rutger in a shock and disbelief.
“I pay attention.” Rutger nonchalantly shrugged but was smiled pleased glad Cutter likes it.
“It’s perfect.” Cutter whispered in awe gently tracing her finger over the small star charm.
“Good.” Rutger smiled satisfied that he picked a necklace she seems to love.
“Help me put it on?” Cutter asked him softly holding the necklace out to him.
Rutger eagerly nodded and gently took the necklace as Cutter turned around pushing her hair to one side of her shoulders.
Rutger softly wrapped the necklace around her neck and clipped it close.
He watched as she turned back around facing him again, “Beautiful.” Rutger mumbled staring at her with stars in his eyes.
Cutter froze hearing him, she didn’t understand why she felt what she feels for Rutger but she isn’t ready to figure that out yet.
Rutger gently pushed her hair behind her ear and smiled sadly at her seeing the fear on her face, “I know.” Rutger knows Cutter better than anyone and knows how much she gets uncomfortable because of her own emotions and hates feeling vulnerable.
Which is also why Rutger knows when Cutter feels something for him back, he notices the pink that dust her cheeks because oh him and the glances she makes when she thinks he is not looking. Rutger is more than happy to wait as long as he needs to until Cutter is comfortable, Cutter is still his best friend and that is more than enough.
“I do have feelings for you Cutter but i know you aren’t ready for anything, i will happily wait for however long you need because i am perfectly content being just your best friend.” Rutger softly confessed but also reassured her, he did not want to make her feel bad because he understood.
“Now we better get back everyone else is probably wake by now.” Rutger smiled at her reassuring her again, he didn’t want her birthday to be sad but he did want her to know he does care for her romantically but is happy with being just friends.
Cutter reluctantly nodded and toon Rutger’s hand standing up as they grabbed their stuff before staring the hike back down the snowy hill.

Devils' Jack Hughes Reveals The One Thing That Surprised Him About Seamus Casey
By Kristy Flannery
Jack Hughes sat on the bench at O2 Arena in Prague, Czechia, watching New Jersey Devils defenseman Seamus Casey get swarmed by Erik Haula, Tomas Tatar, and Dawson Mercer after scoring his first career NHL goal.
It would be the first of three goals the rookie defenseman would score in his first eight NHL games.
New Jersey's front office, coaching staff, teammates, and fans were taken aback by Casey's impressive play. He quarterbacked the power play and collected four points with the poise of a player well beyond his years.
One person who was not taken aback? Hughes.
The Devils' star forward was familiar with Casey's game from his time playing with his brother, Luke Hughes, at the University of Michigan.
"I kind of knew what he was like," Hughes said. "Obviously, just watching him and Luke so many times. I knew his game.
"I knew what he was about."
Despite knowing Casey's on-ice capabilities, one thing surprised the 2019 first-overall pick.
"I was surprised how fast he got to (his game)," Hughes continued. "His ability to make plays and move in the offensive zone how he did in college."
Before being assigned to the American Hockey League, The Hockey News asked Casey if any of his teammates had taken him under their wing. Given the rookie's familiarity with the Hughes family, it made sense that Jack earned his own shoutout.
"Jack has been unbelievable," Casey said. "He has been great. I am really close to Luke and, through that, Jack. He has been helping me through everything."
So, does Hughes consider Casey an honorary little brother?
"He is not there yet," Hughes said with a laugh.
While the 23-year-old center describes Casey as a great kid, it will be "plenty of years" before Casey can be considered another little brother.

Is there a backstory of your scp oc?
Very much so!
Their full name is Seamus Kelly, but after outliving their only family (pre-963) decided to just go by Kelly (lore dump ahead)
Sean was born after the great war (1920), the youngest child of irish inmigrant parents in the USA. He was very sickly as a child and was often taken care of by his brother, Liam (6 yrs older) as both parents were unavailable (full time working father and emotionally unstable mother).
Whenever he was bedridden (which was often) his older brother would bring him whatever trinkets he would find (this would partly play a part in his collecting and antiquarian tendencies)
Liam had an ability that adult Sean now knew as an scp, he often cured his sibling's reocurring illnesses by somehow transferring whatever the body needed from his own (ex. white blood cells for an infection) although he wasnt really aware of the specifics. He deprived himself so much he eventually succumbed to an illness himself, passing away when Sean's 12.
About 5 years later his mother takes her life, death becomes a sore topic
He starts doing jobs for college money, as his father refused to pay for it due to their economic situation.
He looks for scholarships and because its the cold war, the goverment starts investing in science which also means: foundation scholarships, he finds them through a coworker he often talked with and had mentioned his brother's ability to (under the assumption of it just being child vision)
Once he moves into foundation quarters he cuts off his father, not being in good terms with him. Maybe its something he regrets later, in his thirties, when he is diagnosed with a life threatening illness and doesnt have an inmediate suitale donor, finding that his father passed away from kidney failure way before he even finished his major.
Around this time one of the articles hes in charge of is 963, a safe scp known to produce small fragile gems
It was thought to be used in some sort of healing ritual, as the tomb it was in had other things related to it, but it was clearly defective now, with an empty socket at its center.
Kelly kickstarted further research in an attempt to activate it, at first due to his own masked desesperation to find something that could cure him (he wasnt going to join his family, he wasnt) but after a while his fixation on it wasnt normal, with bouts of euphoria when near it and debilitating anxiety when not
Its a while before anyone realizes the artifact had seemingly stopped producing its crystals, that whoever was in charge of it had never reported it (conveniently Kelly's health is better than ever)
At some point after being suspected, hes detained for trying to take 963 out of its containment, thankfully a colleage was aware of Kellys abnormal behavior and claimed it to be a memetic effect, Kelly was given A class amnestics (this wont work of course, because Kelly's memories arent stored in himself now, its the artifact's)
Before he is relocated a security breach breaks out, and Kelly finds himself going through a path he shouldnt be able to recognice.
He is later found dead wearing the object, and when he is opened up they find the reason why. 963 had fed on his soul and grown its seed inside him, replacing his organs, millions of crystals varying in size, until it found the perfect form that could make it whole.
And somewhere an unfortunate researcher unknowingly woke up with it inside them.

I love the journey Gorgug has gone on during junior year because two years ago I played in a campaign that was set in Elmville at a community college for failed adventurers. My character, Solei, was a wild magic sorcerer who multi-classed into artificer and she was very Seamus Finnigan coded where her wild magic surges worked like Pete's in USC and she had to roll on both artificer spells/actions and sorcerer spells, so her gadgets were always blowing up or not working quite right.
Ofc, this was pre-junior year but now I can't stop thinking about how the MCAT works and the fact that we were meant to only be a bit older than the BKs, so theoretically, Solei could have gone through similar struggles as Gorgug but instead of Porter being a dick to her it was Jace. Jace who often brings up the fact that his classes are so chill because his students are all innately magical. I'm really interested in seeing how he plays into the whole Ankarna plot (I personally think he and Porter are getting their kisses in) as this would make me rethink/further develop how/why Solei got booted from Aguefort. Her original backstory was that she was booted because she almost caused their Sophomore year quest to fail and so took the blame for all that went awry and was expelled while her party was allowed to continue at Aguefort on probation. (Ofc this doesn't really make a ton of sense with how Aguefort runs but who cares).
Anyway, I just love the idea of Solei being at the community college, hearing about the Bad Kids, and hearing about their Barbarian who proved that you can successfully meld classes that others think are incompatible. Below is a headshot I drew of her and a mini I made on heroforge
She's just an absolute eyesore to look at and is usually covered in some kind of colourful magical ash/residue.
