All Hallows' Eve (2013, dir. Damien Leone) - review by Rookie-Critic

All Hallows' Eve was straight garbage. I don't normally like to just immediately come out the gate swinging like this, but there was hardly any redeeming quality to it. I won't sit here and list all the things that were bad about it or we'd be here all night, but all the hallmark things were bad: acting, writing, cinematography; you name it, it was probably done poorly here. Even outside of all the technical and foundational problems this film has, it also manages to be wildly (and randomly, might I add) misogynistic. Words like "sl*t" and "c*nt" make prominent, close up appearances where they in no way inform or do anything for the story at all, the violence seems laser-targeted and maliciously hateful towards women, and it can't even manage to make any sense on top of it all. I will give two compliments to this movie and two compliments only: 1) the practical effects are pretty incredible for a film with this low of a budget. It seems to be the one thing director/writer/editor/effects artist Damien Leone seems to have a grasp on. 2) This is kind of an extension of the first compliment, but this was the first film to include the character of Art the Clown, who would later get a film focusing solely on him (this one is an anthology of 3 shorts, plus the wraparound plot, in which Art is only the star of one, and only briefly appears in the other two). Art as a design and a concept is genuinely bone-chilling. Seeing him walk around with that garbage bag does cut right down to the base fear of clowns that plagues a lot of people. We'll talk more about Art in a couple of upcoming reviews, so I'll leave it at that for now. Outside of those things, though, this is a dime-a-dozen, bargain bin, low budget horror anthology that antagonizes the viewer in the worst way. Avoid at all costs.
Score: 1/10

WATCHING
I was going to watch "Terrifier (2016)" but then I learned "All Hallows' Eve (2013) is the prequel that came out way back when...
So I'm backtracking five minutes into Terrifier to watch All Hallows' Eve on the 'Tubi TV' app as nobody I subscribe to has it.
Low Budget throwback-type horror. It'll be fun I'm thinking.

MY THREE SONS at 60!
September 29, 1960
“My Three Sons” was a situation comedy produced at Desilu Studios. It premiered on ABC TV on September 29, 1960 and finished its first run on April 13, 1972, with 380 episodes making it the second-longest running live-action sitcom in TV history after “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett” (1952-66).
Seasons 1 through 5 were aired in black and white on CBS. In 1965 it moved to CBS when ABC declined to underwrite the costs of airing in color. The series was initially filmed at Desilu Studios in Hollywood, but at the start of the 1967–68 season, the cast and crew began filming the series at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City, California due to Lucille Ball’s sale of Desilu to Gulf + Western, which owned Paramount Pictures. The sale also affected the filming location of another family sitcom, “Family Affair.”
Incredibly, “My Three Sons” ran concurrently through both “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” Both Steve Douglas and Lucy Carmichael (and later Carter), where single parents raising children.
September 16, 1965 was a big night for CBS airing the very first episode of “My Three Sons” after moving from ABC titled “The First Marriage”. It was also the first episode of the series broadcast in color, something “The Lucy Show” did three days earlier with “Lucy at Marineland” (TLS S4;E1). The premise of the series is a widowed father (Steven Douglas) raising his three boys with help of his extended family. Initially, the three sons were Chip, Robbie, and Mike, but in 1967 Mike was written out and replaced by Ernie, whom Steve adopted. The extended family at first consisted of Bub, Steve’s father-in-law and the boys’ maternal grandfather, but in 1964, that character was replaced by Uncle Charley, Steve’s uncle and Bub’s brother.
The leading role was played by film star Fred MacMurray, who the series was built around - including his hectic schedule. To suit MacMurray, scenes would be shot out of sequence and even alone on a soundstage and later edited to create a complete episode. This was not MacMurray’s first time at Desilu. In 1958 he played himself on the “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” set in the Nevada desert outside Las Vegas. He was joined by his second wife, actress June Haver. MacMurray (1908-91) appeared in over 100 films in his career but is perhaps best remembered for the film Double Indemnity (1944), which Lucy references in this episode. MacMurray’s name was first mentioned by Ethel in 1953 in “The Black Eye” (ILL S2;E20) when flowers arrive for Lucy mistakenly signed “Eternally yours, Fred.”
Although Lucille Ball was their landlord (and ultimate boss) she never acted on the show, but many of the actors who appeared on Lucille Ball’s sitcoms did appear on “My Three Sons”.
From 1960 to 1965, MacMurray was joined by William Frawley as Bub O’Casey, the family’s live-in maternal grandfather. Of course, Frawley came to fame on “I Love Lucy” as the crusty landlord Fred Mertz. Frawley had worked with MacMurray in the 1935 film, Car 99. When Frawley had to leave the show due to ill-health (and it was too costly to insure him) he was replaced by another Desilu alumni, William Demarest, as Uncle Charley. Like his previous co-star, Vivian Vance, Frawley was not especially fond of Demarest personally or as an actor. Demarest had, however, done three films with Lucille Ball. Frawley kept watching “My Three Sons” on his TV set bitterly. He never really got over being replaced by Demarest. On March 3, 1966, Frawley died of a heart attack.
For Christmas 1959, Frawley and Demarest both appeared with Lucy and Desi in “The Desilu Revue” (above with “December Bride’s” Spring Byington). At the time, Demarest was working on the Desilu lot appearing in NBC’s “Love and Marriage.”
On “My Three Sons” two of Steve Douglas’ boys had been seen on “The Lucy Show”: Don Grady (Robbie Douglas) had played Chris Carmichael’s friend Bill and Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) had played Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Ted Eccles, who assumed the role of Arnold Mooney when Barry Livingston was busy on “My Three Sons,” also did an episode.
The children of “The Lucy Show,” Ralph Hart (who played Viv Bagley’s son Sherman), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael), and Candy Moore (Lucy Carmichael’s daughter Chris) were also on episodes of "My Three Sons.”
Other “Lucy” performers who were on “My Three Sons” include:

On November 22, 1977, ABC TV (and Dick Clark Productions) brought together a reunion of two of television's favorite sitcoms "The Partridge Family" and "My Three Sons." Hosted by Shirley Jones and Fred MacMurray this would be the only time that the surviving cast members would get together to celebrate the series which included clips, a song from David Cassidy, and an update of what each cast member was doing in 1977.
Also in 1977, some of the stars of the series reunited on a morning program titled "The Early Show", including Stanley Livingston (Chip Douglas), Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas), Tina Cole (Katie Miller Douglas), and Don Grady (Robbie Douglas).
TRIVIA
In “Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (TLS S4;E7) in 1965, there is a large framed photo of Fred MacMurray in the studio hallway. He is joined by other Desilu stars like Jim Nabors (of “Gomer Pyle USMC”), Andy Griffith (of “The Andy Griffith Show”) and Danny Thomas (of “The Danny Thomas Show”).

books i read in 2019
this year i read a total of 109 books. i lost track of some things i read and didn’t list them on goodreads, so the actual total is probably higher than my official reading challenge number. i’ve added at least a couple i can distinctly remember reading as they were christmassy novellas.
this year i leaned more heavily into reading romance of all types. i’ve found it easier to read books with a guaranteed happily ever after this year, and i’ve not had much enjoyment in my other type of common read which is a murder mystery/thriller. as the year ended though i did find i was reading a wider variety of books, which possibly is because i now work for a library and i can’t seem to help myself from taking books home.
i’m hoping to continue reading a bigger variety of books in 2020, but i’m also happy to continue down my romance route. i’ve decided to set my challenge at 30 books this year to feel a bigger sense of achievement, as for the last two years i’ve set it at 1 and whilst this obviously softened the pressure on me to read quickly i’ve definitely felt it less of a ‘challenge’. i’m confident i’ll be able to get to 30 fairly quickly.
rereads are italicised, books i really enjoyed are bolded, and my standout read of the year is both.

All Hallows’ Eve is a (very) low budget anthology horror movie featuring three segments and a linking sequence all (barely) connected by what appears to be a mute clown with shit stained teeth.
Sarah (Katie Maguire) is a slightly prissy babysitter who finds a VHS tape in the Halloween haul of her two tiny charges Tia (Sydney Freihofer) and Timmy (Cole Mathewson). Unfortunately VHS is a defunct technology that not even my aged parents retain, and so the tape goes unwatched while everyone has a fun Halloween eating sweets and going to bed late. No, apparently the kids’ house is the last house (on the left?) with a functioning VHS machine so Sarah pops it in and they have a looky-loo. Luckily this is a VHS tape like no other, so what they see is not some depressing homemade porn or an episode of Minder from 1983 suddenly interrupted by a Bananarama Top of the Pops appearance, but three tales of terror.
Well, the trio only see the first tale of terror and, actually, tale might be pushing it a bit. It’s more like a sequence of events that starts with a young woman being snatched from an unconvincing bus station by the creepy clown to a corridor with some pipes, where two other women are chained, and then it all ends suddenly with a bit of unconvincing demon rape and a forced c-section. This unholy gore belatedly jars some sense into Sarah and she switches the tape off and sends the little scamps to bed, but finds herself strangely compelled to view the rest of the tape.
The second sequence of events concerns a young woman being chased around a secluded house by a fan of interpretive dance dressed like a spooky frogman. This is harrowing in that its sheer uselessness as an exercise in suspense reminds you how you only get one short life and you are wasting precious minutes of yours watching a woman being imperilled by the world’s least convincing alien, so you’re hardly likely to actually learn another language or indeed do anything worthwhile, so on the whole maybe you should just go to bed forever.
Luckily for your sense of self-worth the third sequence of events is by far the best, as it actually seems to contain something resembling a plot. After witnessing a gory gas station imbroglio a young woman attempts to flee the recurring killer clown, and it all ends in a spectacularly vile fashion.
The clown is also crowbarred into the mime chase sequence and may (WHHhhhooooOOOOOOoooooOOOOOOO!) in fact be entering Sarah’s reality via the viewing of the tape. Quick, Sarah, tape the end of Murder She Wrote over the nasty bugger!
All Hallows’ Eve is clearly a labour of love on the part of someone. Someone who is maybe a little too invested in horror movies: they are certainly far too invested in the surface attraction of horror movies. Whatever its faults All Hallows’ Eve sure leaves you feeling grubby, like you’ve had to crawl through a tunnel of scabs while listening to your parents argue about money, which must count as some strange kind of success. Unfortunately as All Hallows’ Eve is not actually about anything other than inciting that initial visceral reaction it seems a weirdly thin experience, and would be entirely forgettable were it not for the clown and the revolting finale of the third section, which is kind of thrillingly unpleasant to the extent that you wonder what the holy hell they were thinking. So, well done to Mike Giannelli whose efforts as Art The Clown really pay off with a unique combination of the goofball and the brutal. And I guess a kind of hesitant high five to whoever had such a total lack of restraint that they waved through that third section denouement; which really does feel unnecessarily ugly, and, in tandem with the unavoidable fact that the terrorising of female characters forms the bulk of the running time, could leave a genuinely nasty mental aftertaste. The end of the framing sequence isn’t exactly a laff riot but whooof! that third section finale is something else; something really bloody horrible.
But then what use is horror if it’s not horrible? And the bits of All Hallows’ Eve which aren’t aimless tedium are certainly pretty horrible. So it’s unconditional kudos to the SFX team for some inventive and icky grue, a big wet kiss for Noir Deco for the music, which is so very “1980s Horror Movie Music” it’s delightful, and a primer on story structure and some sensitivity training to Damien Leone. And maybe a bigger budget next time, as there’s plenty of potential in All Hallows’ Eve. So that’s good.

HAPPY TUESDAY NEW RELEASE DAY!! It’s a BIG list fully loaded with 85 books!!!! And yesterday’s list rocks worlds too, and then… I reviewed and awesome one so we have PLENTY to read, my friends.

and…
Infinite Us by Eden Butler <— EDEN BUTLER RE-RELEASE! “…Nash Nation loves zeroes and ones, over-sized monitors, and late office hours. He’s too busy taking over the world to make time for relationships—that is, until his new neighbor Willow O’Bryant barges into his life, and now Nash can’t shake the feeling that this isn’t the first time she’s interrupted his world. Then, the dreams start. And in the dreams—memories...”
Kathy: On Amy Harmon’s Facebook page, she posted that she read Eden Butler’s Infinite Us and highly recommended it.
Mony: Just finished The Cornerstone by Kate Canterbary and loved it! Steamy story about Hot Guy & Sassy Girl as they steer through one night stands into something more. Sassy Girl is great – sharp-witted & a tough nut to crack. H is a great alpha. Loved the slow burn & Hot Guy’s transformation. Banter between h & H is clever and even sharper in second half.
A 4.5-star read (deduction cause too much about h’s family). Plan to read The Spire (#6 in series)…story about Hot Doctor & Rebel Girl. Thanks Jan for mentioning this author!
Cicely: Hi Maryse! I just want to share that Absolution, the third book from The Disenchanted series from L.D. Davis is out now too!! The series is great and is worth some extra love.
Angst loving fanatic like me would love it!!!
Michele G: Tasha, where are you? I read it because of your high marks….you weren’t wrong!! I just finished The Sun Down Motel and it was AMAZING!! I listened to the audiobook and felt like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone …or something at times…..so so good!!! I highly recommend!

Mike Trout Should Have Won A Playoff Game By Now
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is a positive outlier in far too many ways to count. But one of the rare negatives in his career to date has been a lack of postseason success — or practically any postseason action, period. The lone playoff appearance of Trout’s career happened back in 2014, when the Angels were unceremoniously swept by the pennant-bound Kansas City Royals in the American League division series. Trout hit 1-for-12 in the series, and his teammates fared little better, bringing Los Angeles’ playoff journey to an end just three games after it began.
It’s hard to believe that those three winless games represent the sum total of playoff experience for a player who, by the numbers, is the greatest of this generation. Even though it’s impossible for any single baseball player to carry a championship team the way stars can in other sports, it is highly unusual for the best player of any given MLB era to go without as much as a single victory in the postseason. The last time it happened was 100 years ago, and that was back when the “postseason” was simply the World Series — so it’s especially shocking to see it happen with today’s expanded playoff structure in which 10 teams make the postseason each year. Even worse, there’s a very good chance that the drought will continue this season for Trout and the Angels, as the decade comes to a close.
Trout has, without question, been the best individual player of the 2010s. Over the decade thus far, he leads all hitters in on-base plus slugging and ranks No. 1 among all players — both batters and pitchers — in wins above replacement (WAR).1 But among his peers atop the WAR leaderboard, Trout stands alone with that goose egg under the postseason win column:2

When it comes to the best players of this decade, longtime Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, whose teams have won just two playoff games during his tenure, and New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton come closest to Trout’s zero-win postseason record. (Stanton used to be in the zero-win club, too, before winning two playoff games with the Yankees last year.) Most of the other top players of the 2010s crack at least double-digits in the playoff win column — headlined by Buster Posey, Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw, whose teams have all won at least 30 playoff games this decade.
Granted, Trout has had comparatively fewer chances — he’s played only eight of the decade’s nine possible seasons (through 2018), and one of those was an abbreviated rookie year during which he appeared in just 40 games. In a way, it’s only by virtue of how individually brilliant Trout has been that we’re even in a position to compare playoff records with his rivals like this. But Trout also started his career by joining a team that had been one of the winningest of the previous decade, so you might think that advantage would have helped him make up for the lost time.
Instead, the Angels have consistently surrounded Trout with one of the worst supporting casts of any star ever, largely squandering the windfall his historic output (and cheap price tag) should have offered them. Thanks to a series of terrible free-agent signings, weak drafts and — Shohei Ohtani aside — an inability to add prospects through the international pipeline, Los Angeles has somehow won an average of only 83.8 games per season since Trout’s debut campaign. Even when the Angels looked like they might finally have some promising players around Trout in 2018, they still found a way to finish around .500 in spite of Trout’s MVP-level numbers.
All of which is to say that very little of Trout’s zero-win postseason record is actually Trout’s fault. But it would still be historically notable if the best player of a decade (by WAR) ends up being on a team that wins no playoff games that decade. The best player of the 2000s, Alex Rodriguez, was on teams that won a whopping 26 playoff games, for instance, which is the same number as the best player of the 1950s (Mickey Mantle). Most decade leaders win fewer than that, especially as we go back in time — Willie Mays was the best of the 1960s, but his team won only three postseason contests that decade because, for most of it, the playoffs were World Series or bust. Even so, the last decadelong MLB WAR leader whose teams won zero playoff games was Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators in the 1910s.3

It’s certainly more possible for baseball’s best players to come up short in the postseason than in, say, basketball. Going back to the start of the NBA in 1949-50, no best player of any decade (according to a mix of value over replacement player, win shares and estimated wins added) ever played on teams that posted fewer than 30 playoff wins during that span.4 Yes, more than 50 percent of NBA teams make the playoffs each year, but we’re still talking about a handful of playoff wins per season as the minimum baseline — at the high end, LeBron James’s teams have 120 playoff wins this decade (though he won’t be adding to that tally this year). But several moves to add more postseason slots since 1994 have theoretically made it easier for MLB to show its best players in the games that matter most. For the most part, you can see the effects of that bearing out in the playoff records for top stars since the 1990s — except in the case of Trout.
And this season may not remedy the situation. The Angels are desperately trying to put Trout in a position to drive more runners in, and Ohtani could be part of that equation as a hitter again by May. But for now, FiveThirtyEight’s early preseason MLB forecast projects Los Angeles to win 81 games, with a 25 percent chance of making the playoffs. If we assume they’d have about a 45 percent chance of winning any given playoff game,5 there’s an 85 percent chance they won’t win a playoff game this year either, continuing Trout’s dubious streak through the end of the decade.
If that does happen, it shouldn’t reflect poorly on Trout’s own greatness. In fact, it’s a testament to how far we’ve come in analyzing players that we no longer ask postseason records to carry anywhere near as much weight as they used to in these kinds of debates. But it won’t make Trout’s record any less of a historical anomaly. In an era where making the playoffs is easier than ever, baseball should be able to showcase its greatest player winning games on the postseason stage. That hasn’t happened yet — and the Angels are running out of time to change Trout’s fate before he potentially leaves town for good.

Major League Baseball roundup: Astros walk off in 9th for 12th…
Alex Bregman delivered a walk-off, two-run double and the Houston Astros stretched their winning streak to a franchise-record tying 12 games with a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday at Minute Maid Park.

Bregman delivered with the bases loaded and one out against Rays right-hander Sergio Romo (1-2), the seventh pitcher of the night for Tampa Bay. Bregman lined a 1-1 slider into left-center field, plating Marwin Gonzalez (walk) and Max Stassi (single), who reached in succession to open the frame. The Astros opened a nine-game homestand after going 10-0 on their recently completed road trip.
Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole (no-decision), who walked four of the first 12 batters he faced before settling into a groove, retired 11 consecutive batters following the Joey Wendle’s two-run single in the third and completed seven innings allowing four runs on three hits and a season-high five walks with eight strikeouts. Cole threw a season-high 116 pitches.
Rays catcher Wilson Ramos hit a two-run, opposite-field homer in the first for Tampa Bay. Collin McHugh (2-0) earned the win in relief for Houston.
Nationals 5, Yankees 3 (completion of suspended game)
Rookie Juan Soto hit a long two-run pinch-hit homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as Washington beat New York in the completion of a suspended game from May 15 at Nationals Park.
The game resumed in a 3-3 tie after rain halted the originally scheduled game and the makeup was rained out on May 16. When the game started last month, the game-time temperature was 85, but by Monday it increased to 95 with a heat index of 105.
Soto, who made his major league debut on May 20, batted for Matt Adams against Chad Green (2-1). He gave the Nationals a two-run lead by hammering a 3-1 fastball into the second-to-last row of the seats in the second deck in right. It was Soto’s sixth homer and third against the Yankees. The resumption of the game will be considered his major league debut with an asterisk, but the 433-foot drive was not his first career homer.
Yankees 4, Nationals 2
Giancarlo Stanton collected four hits, including a booming RBI double with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as New York held on over Washington.
In the makeup game from May 16, Stanton (4-for-5, two RBIs) recorded his third game this season with four hits and seventh of his career. Stanton’s big night occurred after he was 2-for-13 in a four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays, culminating in a tense postgame interview on Sunday.
Bryce Harper went 0-for-4 as the Nationals dropped their fourth straight and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Mark Reynolds drove in both runs for Washington with an RBI groundout in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Rangers 6, Royals 3
Bartolo Colon became the winningest pitcher born in the Dominican Republic in major league history, and Shin-Soo Choo and Adrian Beltre each homered as visiting Texas handed Kansas City its seventh straight loss.
It was the 244th career win for the 45-year-old Colon (4-4), breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for most wins by a Dominican-born player and moving him within one win of tying Nicaraguan Dennis Martinez (245) for most wins by a pitcher from a Latin American country. Colon also recorded his 2,503th career strikeout, which broke a tie for 33rd place on the alltime list with Christy Mathewson.

Choo, who also doubled, walked three times in five at-bats and scored twice, reached base for the 32nd straight game, the longest active streak in the major leagues. Ian Kennedy fell to 1-76 for the Royals, going six innings allowing five runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Phillies 6, Cardinals 5 (10 innings)
Aaron Altherr delivered a walk-off, two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as Philadelphia notched a wild win over visiting St. Louis.
Philadelphia blew a two-run lead in the ninth and saw St. Louis take the lead in the 10th on Tommy Pham’s homer before rallying for the win. Altherr smacked a liner to left off Matt Bowman (0-2) with two runners on and Cardinals left fielder Marcell Ozuna missed a diving attempt and the ball got past him. Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana both scored to give the Phillies their sixth win in the past eight games.
The Cardinals’ ninth-inning rally kept Phillies right-hander Nick Pivetta from ending his four-start losing streak. Pivetta struck out a career-best 13 in 7 1/3 innings and allowed two runs, four hits and one walk. St. Louis got home runs from Matt Carpenter, Yadier Molina and Pham in defeat while Odubel Herrera smacked a three-run shot for Philadelphia.
Marlins 5, Giants 4
Miguel Rojas capped a three-run ninth inning with a tie-breaking, RBI single, allowing Miami to rally to victory in the opener of a three-game series in San Francisco.
Down 4-2, Brian Anderson led off the ninth by drawing a walk from Giants closer Hunter Strickland (3-3). J.T. Realmuto followed with a double, plating Anderson to get Miami within one. Strickland then walked Justin Bour to put the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base, and both scored one out later on consecutive RBI singles by Lewis Brinson and Rojas.
Miami’s Kyle Barraclough recorded his sixth save of the season with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. Tayron Guerrero (1-2), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was credited with the win.
Mets 12, Rockies 2
Brandon Nimmo homered twice and drove in four runs, Jacob deGrom pitched eight strong innings, and New York beat Colorado in Denver.
Wilmer Flores and Devin Mesoraco also homered for the Mets, who have followed a four-game losing streak with three straight wins. New York backed another solid outing from deGrom (5-2) with 15 hits. The Mets’ ace struck out seven and allowed two runs — one earned — to drop his ERA to 1.51, tops in the majors.
Gerardo Parra had two hits and drove in a run for Colorado, which has lost eight straight at home to fall to 11-20 at Coors Field.
Slideshow (9 Images)
Indians 6, White Sox 2
Trevor Bauer racked up eight strikeouts in seven scoreless innings and Cleveland pulled away over visiting Chicago.
Only Mother Nature could stop Bauer (6-5), who did not return to the mound after a 35-minute rain delay in the bottom of the seventh. The storm snapped his bid to record double-digit strikeouts for the fifth consecutive start, which would have tied Corey Kluber’s franchise record. Bauer, 27, has 129 strikeouts in 100 2/3 innings and ranks tied for third in baseball in strikeouts, behind only Washington’s Max Scherzer (152) and Houston’s Gerrit Cole (138).
Jason Kipnis went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Indians at the plate. Roberto Perez added a pair of doubles and two RBIs as Cleveland improved to 6-2 against Chicago this season. Matt Davidson doubled and homered for the White Sox, who lost their fifth in a row.
Pirates 1, Brewers 0
Trevor Williams combined with two relievers for a two-hitter, and Jordy Mercer drove in the only run in the seventh inning as Pittsburgh slipped by visiting Milwaukee.
Pittsburgh, which picked up its ninth shutout win, has won four of its past five games and is looking to regain a foothold in the National League Central. Monday was the opening of a three-game set against the first-place Brewers. Milwaukee has lost three straight. The fourth-place Pirates climbed to within six games of the Brewers.
The starters, Williams and Milwaukee’s Jhoulys Chacin, dueled into the seventh inning. Williams (6-4) threw a one-hitter over seven innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks. He threw 96 pitches. The only hit against him was Jonathan Villar’s two-out single in the fourth. Chacin (6-2), who had won his past six decisions, gave up one run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, with two strikeouts and two walks. He lasted at least six innings for the third straight start.
Diamondbacks 7, Angels 4
Paul Goldschmidt, Ketel Marte and Nick Ahmed hit home runs, Zack Greinke threw 6 1/3 solid innings and Arizona beat Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Goldschmidt’s two-run homer in the first inning got the ball rolling for the D-backs, who increased their lead to 6-0 before the Angels could get anything across against Greinke.
Justin Upton and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back homers off Greinke in the fourth inning to narrow the Angels’ deficit to 6-2, but the team’s seventh-inning rally was stifled when center fielder Jarrod Dyson reached over the wall to take away a potential grand slam from Upton. Archie Bradley got the final four outs for his third save.
Dodgers-Cubs (ppd.)
After waiting nearly three hours to begin action, the game between Los Angeles and Chicago was postponed due to rain and a limited power outage at Wrigley Field.
In addition to showers in the area, a small power outage affected the operation of the right field lights.
The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Tuesday, with the first game scheduled for a 1:05 p.m. ET start time. The night game is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. The three-game series is the Dodgers’ only trip to visit the Cubs this season.
