Now these are all just my interpretations of the characters, I don't necessarily have hard evidence on hand to back all this up, but here we go:

I've been trying to put my finger on the Kai smart/dumb duality, and I think I can finally somewhat make out my thoughts. Kai is not smart. Book smarts don't come easily to him, he's not great at math, he's not great at overly complex stratagizing- but he's got a LOT of great knowledge in him.

Take the dragon healing in DR. He might not intuitively know how different medicines work or why, but he's got injured enough that he knows that type of information is important to know, and so he's forced it into his head. He couldn't tell you why the blue goop helpped the dragon, but he knew that it would, and that it would be important to remember that it would.

He's pretty good at navigating complex social situations, because he's good at reading people. Having had a history with extreme emotions, he knows how to take them into account, and knows how important it is to do so, even if it's not necessarily logical. I hate to say this, but he's very emotionally intelligent, which sounds kinda like an insult but is actually insanely valuable, because humans are inherently emotional creatures.

He's got a solid basis of common sense, and is constantly looking at the bigger picture. That's why he can come up with the best outline for a plan, because he can not think through the details. Now, if he tries to implement a plan of his without consulting others, he's probably going to miss some very important details, and screw himself over. But, he's most likely to have the best basic premise for an effective plan. This is why his intuition is usually correct. He's not logically thinking through the most likely scenario given all available factors, he's looking at every problem from the birds eye view, and is easily able to fill in the blanks, because he sees the whole picture. You can not tell me this kid knew Lloyd was the Green Ninja because he used logical deduction to eliminate all other possibilities, he had a gut feeling based on realizing the value of human life.

Now, sometimes you need details. And Kai is not good at those. He sucks at those. Big time. But he's self aware enough to know when those times are (most of the time, sometimes he wastes all his lives in a video game before talking to anyone else).

The thing all of these points have in common is that he's lived a very full life while making very many mistakes, and he's learned from all of them. He learns from his dumb mistakes, and is wise enough to know which lessons are worth holding on to.

Jay on the other hand... does not learn from his mistakes. He's got a real thick skull.

Inside that skull is a really smart guy who intuitively latches on to engineering and science concepts. He's got a whole heck of a lot of information that his brain is holding onto simply because it can. This man is all about the details. He gets hyperfixated on details to the point where it's a problem. He's the most likely to solve the intricate problem facing the team, forget that they need to stay hidden, and yell "I did it!". Good at details, bad at big picture. This is also why he usually gives up hope so easily compared to the rest of the team. He can not think long term, he can not see the bigger picture like Kai can, so road blocks in the current plan seem insurmountable.

Sure, he might have rigged an old sailing ship with rocket boosters, but he couldn't unscramble "darnagom" his logical problem solving skills are not what's carrying him.

My standby for the Jay dumb/smart duality is that he should have a significant amount of William Osman energy to him. He's very smart, and can work out how to solve intricate problems and make insane builds, but if making said things is a dangerous or dumb idea has never once crossed his mind, and if it has, he has actively chosen to ignore it. Jay's intelligence is much more creativity based than I think a lot of people like to think. Engineering is about slapping crazy ideas together which barely hold together at first- and that's Jay's brand of smarts.

If you compare this to Zane, that's the vital component that his intelligence is missing- the creativity. He is VERY good at assessing options, but not so great at coming up with new solutions himself. He's running on pure logic and tested successes. He's also missing that social intelligence that Kai has. I'd venture to say that Zane is, by far the most gullible member of the team. If there is not a solid logical reason to doubt something, he is absolutely going to take it at face value. Point being, all the ninja have different smarts, and stupidities, let's not try to conflate them too much.

me and @lonleyzodiac have been working on a MASSIVE revamp of the dungeons & elements AU to flesh out the characters (or players as they are in this AU) so here are some misc fun facts and headcanons about the players!!

- jay is irish, but ed n edna are welsh. he’s lived in canada with them all his life and was brought up as welsh, however halfway through the master of the mountain campaign (when he (as a player) was around 15) ed n edna told him that 1. he’s adopted and 2. he’s irish

- he told the others about it a bit before a session started and everyone was shocked to say the least

- jay almost exclusively speaks welsh at home, except when his parents talk to customers or when he has people over. his accent is a mix of canadian and welsh, however whenever he gets mad or stressed his (northern) welsh accent (i’d like to imagine that ed n edna in this AU are from anglesey? that’s just for reference) gets noticeably thicker/stronger

- after he’s told that he’s irish, jay starts learning irish gaelic!!

- skylor, nya and pixal (i might call pix’s player something like penelope tbh) are a polycule but all thought it would be funny to just not give their characters that

- nya in particular thought it would be really funny to have her character date jay

- jay and zane are a couple and were in on nya, skylor and pix’s idea for the campaign because they also found it ridiculously funny

- when jay introduced his character at the very start of the campaign, wu (the teacher DM, it started off as a school D&D club) pointed out “jay isn’t this just your life” and he responded with “yes” and did not say anything afterwards

- dragons rising is DM’d by lloyd in a random library

- geo is that one player who does not show up for half the sessions, it’s a 50/50 chance on if he’ll show up or if he’ll be banished to The Void™ (he just goes to guitar lessons)

- eventually he starts showing up for every session and for the first few sessions in a row that he showed up to everyone was like “JESUS CHRIST YOU’RE ACTUALLY ALIVE????”

- cole mentioned to him “oh yeah i’m part of a D&D group!!” once and geo immediately asked him “can i join??”. strangely enough they were the only couple to have their characters also be a couple until wyldfyre dragged her bf into the club to play

- vania is a massive theatre kid, she specifically is a massive starkid fan

- starfarer is an underground and obscure comic series that lloyd and jay are both obsessed with. needless to say they are both shocked when it turns out that jay’s dad is cliff gordon

- riyu is based off of lloyd’s pet cat of the same name!!

- inbetween the crystalised campaign and the new overarching campaign (dragons rising), jay and zane cohabitate together (move in together without being married (just yet)) and adopt a cat called jiro n lloyd ends up basing one of the dragons off of him

- the entire skybound campaign was an omen to the future. jay just thought it would be a funny haha twist if it turned out that his character was adopted. until MOTM

- edna often calls jay ‘blodyn’, which is welsh for ‘flower’ and a term of endearment

- geo is a kandi kid and has made him and cole matching singles (and has made cole a few cuffs)

- geo often calls cole things like dragi (romanian for 'dear') and dragul mea (romanian for 'my love/my dear') as in this AU he is romanian-canadian (and bilingual, he speaks both romanian and english fluently, same goes for zane (for french) jay (for welsh (and some irish)) and vania (for italian))

(obviously also they all speak SOME french but zane’s player is french canadian)

- jay is a wiccan

- jay and zane halfway through the s2 (p1) campaign for dragons rising got married (they specifically decided to get handfasted because see prev. fact about jay)

- jay has a massive collection of incense. whenever people walk into him n zane’s house they’re immediately hit with the smell of dragon’s blood or something and they both constantly forget how just jarring it is for others (also fun fact: when writing this specific fun fact i was actually burning dragon’s blood incense)

Words were hard, especially in moments of down time and relaxing moments. But, this made for some pretty unique scenarios.

On the rare occasion that Wu and Lloyd were out, Nya and Pixal diving their way into the garage to work on another project (or upgrade the Samurai X mech), this left the main four to their own things.

The monastery laid in a fair amount of quiet, aside from the frantic button-pressing that came from a particularly heated blue ninja, quiet grumbles and eyebrows furrowed down in clear frustration at the boss fight he had been on for the past hour.

Of course, Jay had company to watch him devolve into controlled madness. Cole sat on the floor, out of reach of Jay, with a sketch pad in his lap that he finally pulled out after months of sitting away. Well, in his defense, being a ghost stopped a lot of his drawings. Regardless, he had the chance to sit down and actually sketch and draw. His model? Sitting right in front of him. Each detail came more onto focused as Cole used different charcoals, erasers, and scribbling to sketch Jay out.

"Oh- What?! How is that fair!?" Jay screeched out, breaking the silence as Cole gave a lazy hum in response, half-listening to the complaints of the blue ninja, as the controller got thrown to the floor and across the room, landing comically upright in front of the gaming system.

A stomp of Jay's foot, the lightning ninja huffed and leaned back on the couch behind him, a pout clear on his face that caused part of his upper lip to turn up in a scowl, nose scrunching slightly in the process. The stomp gained Cole's attention, as well as the light, yet metal steps, of the one and only white ninja.

"Maybe it's time to take a little break?" Zane suggested, sitting down on the couch and shaking a bowl in front of Jay's view. This immediately got the blue ninja to perk up, reaching eagerly for it and sitting up properly to begin munching on the popcorn inside. Of course, this got a round of chuckles from Cole and Jay, as the black ninja scooted forward to dive his left hand into the bowl. Specifically his left, as it had not come in contact with charcoal, while his right hand begged to differ. Even against his dark skin, it was noticeable.

"Yeah, maybe." Jay remarked through a mouthful of popcorn, as he shifted to set the bowl down. Out of habit, he moved his hand to the nearby table that held the TV remote and tissues, as well as wet wipes, before he settled Cole's book down, page up, and grabbed his right hand, clearing it of charcoal bit by bit.

"What am I missing out on? Jay finally finish the boss, or rage quit like always?" Kai said as he entered the room, a zip-up jacket of Jay's wrapped around him, and arms crossed with sass. An offended scoff left the blue ninja, as he settled the dirty wet wipes in a small bin, as well as the rest back where they belong. "I did NOT rage quit! I just called the game unfair and stopped."

"Yeah, sure bud." Kai chuckled, as Jay rolled his eyes and moved the popcorn bucket to Cole's lap, shifting enough to press against the couch and closer to Cole in general. Kai settled on the floor beside Zane, promptly resting his head on the nindroids lap at the small pat of the other's hand.

Immediately, fingers laced through Kai's hair, lightly scratching his scalp and breaking the strands apart of gel to let the natural waves out a bit more. "C'mon, let's see what you're doing wrong, 'mouth of lightning'. Show us you'rebest against the boss"

That got the spark back in Jay's eyes, as he swiftly moved to grab the controller again, before shuffling back in his place between Cole's body and Zane's legs, Cole having on arm thrown behind Jay to rest on Zane unoccupied hand, the other hand rigging through the popcorn and occasionally tossing some in Kai's mouth.

They didn't need words to say how much they loved each other. They'd quite literally die for each other.

But, sometimes love was watching your friend rage on a game while also being the biggest pain you could be.

Sometimes love was drawing that same friend to get back in the rhythm.

Sometimes love came in the form of snacks and cuddles.

Regardless, the four loved each deeply, and it'd take a lot more than the whole city being on the verge of collapsing to stop that love.

So since Jay and Cole are best friends (at least in the show) and Jay's already close to Kai as friends hiw is his relationship with Zane? Did they have moments together? What did they think of each other? Did Jay try to explain to Zane about his sense of Humor?

I have. Strong Thoughts. About Jay and Cole's supposed "Best Friend-ship" (...because the first time they ever verbally try to say they're "Best friends" is a) after two seasons of them hardly interacting and b) after they started fighting over a girl and clearly struggled to even like each other??? It pans out somewhat in later seasons ofc but when they tried to first sell me on the concept I was like WHERE DID THIS COME FROM—) ...that being said, the reason I made Jay and Cole so close in the Royal!AU is because I knew I probably wouldn't get too many direct opportunities to deeply explore them otherwise (even though I've got Fun Plans for them in Skybound wheeeee~).

A similar argument could be said for Jay and Kai though, and one could even go so far as to say their relationship gets worse in the show with how many shots Kai tends to take at Jay in later seasons, mmmmmbut as funny as it sometimes is I also Dun Like That and I Have Power and I Like Them Being Close (in which the jibes at each other are far less maliciously-intentioned as a result)

BUT ANYWAY, addressing the actual question:

Zane is like. Jay's neutral friend. he's less likely to go to Zane over Kai, but more likely to go to Zane over Cole (I know, blasphemy, but there's a reason Jay first tells Zane his troubles as they're playing chess in Skybound). Zane finds Jay wildly fascinating, as he's got a lot of eccentricities about him on top of being so unpredictable, while Jay appreciates having someone around that can understand and complement his intellect, and as demonstrated a few times I like when they geek out over science-y things together <3

I think I took out the whole thing with the Humor Switch (though Zane is still capable of shutting his emotions off), so I imagine Jay did sit Zane down and give him a crash course on humor (they're still working on Detecting Sarcasm, though)

Terrorising the Neighborhood Cat and Other Sleepover Activities

Waiting was extremely boring, Cole decided. He had been waiting for Jay to arrive for roughly two hours, forty minutes and twenty-seven seconds. 

“He’s not going to be here until 2:00, Pumpkin,” his mom said. 

“Yeah, but what if he gets here early?”

“Then he’ll ring the doorbell,” Lilly smiled fondly. “You still need to eat lunch anyway,”

“I don’t need to eat! Jay is coming and we’re gonna be too busy to eat!” Cole exclaimed. 

“Too busy even for cookies?”

Cole bit his lip. “Okay, maybe not too busy,”

“Well, come on then. There’s a sandwich with your name on it in the kitchen, and you and Jay can have dessert later,”

Cole pouted. “‘Kay,” he said. “Promise you’ll tell me when he arrives?”

“Yes,” Lilly followed Cole as he headed to the kitchen. 

Twenty minutes later, Cole had finished his sandwich and a glass of juice. But Jay still hadn’t arrived, which was disappointing.

“Mom, how much longer ‘till Jay gets here?” Cole groaned.

“A little more than an hour, sweetie,” Cole’s mom smiled gently. “You could pick out a game to play while we wait.”

“I don’t want to play Scrabble,” Cole said. “It’s boring,”

“It doesn’t have to be Scrabble,”

“But all the other games are boring too!” Cole flopped onto the couch.

Mom looked at him with a raised eyebrow, or at least, Cole assumed she was. That seemed like the most likely thing she was doing right now. “Cole, Jay will be here in an hour. Until then, you can do something like read a book, or watch TV.” she said, confirming his suspicions. She didn’t sound angry, but definitely a bit annoyed. 

“M’kay,” Cole’s voice was muffled from his position on the cushions. He dragged himself off the couch and up the stairs to his room, then threw himself onto the bed. His Superman bedsheets looked at him mockingly.

“Stupid waiting,” Cole mumbled. He looked around his room, but found nothing of interest. Nothing to entertain him for the next hour. Not unless he wanted to stare at the walls for sixty minutes.

Maybe his book collection would have something. Mom may have been onto something with that suggestion. Cole scanned over the titles; Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Fritz Donnegan #15-20, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Narnia, and a whole bunch of others that he had already read. But there was nothing to do except read. Huffing a little, he pulled Percy Jackson off the shelf and started rereading. 

After what seemed like only a few moments, but was actually fifty minutes, Cole’s mom called him down. “Cole! Jay is here,”

That got Cole moving. He threw his book to the side, mentally apologising to it, then ran down the stairs. “JAY!” He grinned.

“Cole!” Jay barrelled into him, squeezing Cole in a hug. “I missed you! It feels like I haven’t seen you in a billion years!”

“I missed you too,”

“Wow! So this is your house? I’ve never been here before! It’s so big! And shiny! And colourful!” Jay was especially chatty today, Cole noted. He liked that about him — Jay would do all the talking while Cole listened. It was a good arrangement.

“Yeah,” Cole said, answering Jay’s (probably metaphorical) question. “This is where I live,”

“It’s so cool! I saw the garden outside, it’s so pretty! Did you grow it?”

“My mom did,”

Speaking of Cole’s mom, she had been standing off to the side, smiling at the scene unfolding before her. “I’m glad you like the garden, Jay,” she said. “But we should probably get inside. It’s a bit chilly today,”

“Oh!” Jay realised. “Sorry, Mrs. Hence.” He stepped inside and let Lilly close the door.

“No harm done,” she smiled. “Would you like some water or a snack?”

“No, thanks,” Jay said.

Cole tapped Jay’s arm. “Jay, do you wanna go upstairs? We can watch movies,” 

“Okay!”

“Come on!” Cole grabbed Jay’s hand and pulled him towards the stairs. “Mom, we’re going to use the upstairs TV in the sitting room. Is that okay?”

“Of course, sweetie. Just don’t be too loud, okay? And nothing over PG,”

“M’kay!” The two boys raced up the steps. 

Cole swung open the door to the sitting room. It was the family one — the one downstairs was for Dad’s work meetings. Cole wasn’t allowed in that one.

“So, what do you want to watch?” Cole asked Jay as he scrolled through Netflix. 

Jay hummed thoughtfully. “Coraline?” He suggested. “I’ve heard it’s good,”

“Yeah, okay,”

They managed to get through the first thirty minutes before quitting.

“That was way too scary,” Jay shuddered. 

“I’m gonna have nightmares for a week,” Cole agreed. 

“And we didn’t even make it to the end,” Jay said mournfully.

Cole paused for a moment. They would have to do something else now, since movies had been a bust. “Wanna do something else? We could bake cupcakes,” 

“That sounds good,” Jay said. He pulled himself off the couch and opened the door. Cole followed him downstairs. 

The kitchen was quite big for the average Ninjargan family. There were rows of spices and cooking utensils, pots and pans lining the walls, and a shelf filled with cookbooks. The windows let in early afternoon sunlight, bathing the room in a warm glow. It was Cole’s favourite place in the whole house, even more so than the garden.

He pulled one of the cookbooks off the shelf and looked for the cupcakes recipe. There were three of them. Cole frowned. “Hey, Jay, which of these do you want to make?” He pointed at the table of contents, which showed recipes for vanilla cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes, and red velvet ones. Cole hadn’t even heard of red velvet before.

Jay looked over Cole’s shoulder at the book. “Um, chocolate? Chocolate’s gotta be the best, right?”

“You’re right,” Cole said. “We need to get the ingredients before starting,” he went for the cupboards, where he knew Mom kept the bowls and other large containers. They would need those. He pulled out several metal bowls.

“Okay, so we’ve got the bowls, but what about ingredients?” Jay asked. 

“I think they’re in there,” Cole gestured towards  the pantry.

Jay went in and came out victorious with bags of flour, sugar, and cocoa powder. “I looked at the recipe,” he said. “We’ll need these.”

“Great,” Cole grinned. “Now we can start,”

Jay read over the recipe. “One-and-a-third cups flour,” he told Cole. 

One heaping cup of flour was dumped into the bowl, followed by another half cup. Cole figured it was close enough. “What next?” He said. 

“Cocoa powder and baking powder, plus salt.”

Those got tossed in as well, though the measurements were, much like the flour, not very accurate.

“Now you have to whisk it,” Jay instructed Cole. 

Cole mixed it with a spatula, as he had not been able to find the whisk. “Do you wanna mix now?” He asked Jay. 

“Okay!” Jay chirped. He took control of the spatula and continued mixing. 

“The recipe says to add butter and sugar now,” Cole said. “But we have to use a different bowl,”

“I don’t want to wash more dishes though,” Jay frowned. “Do you think we can just add it in here? Since it’ll be all mixed up anyways?”

Cole thought for a moment. “I don’t see why not,”

“We need the butter first,” Jay said.

“It’s still in the fridge. I’ll go get it,” Cole got the butter out of the fridge, then cut it into small chunks. He wasn’t supposed to use the big knives, so he used a small butter knife instead. 

Jay added the sugar into the mixture, then the butter. He tried stirring. “Uh, Cole?” He said nervously. “This stuff isn’t mixing in,”

Cole stared at the bowl. “Maybe it’s supposed to be like that?” 

“I thought cake batter was smooth,”

“It might be smooth later,”

“Maybe,” Jay bit his lip. “What do we add next?”

“Eggs, then vanilla.” 

Both ingredients were added into the mixture, which was beginning to resemble tar. 

“Now we add the flour and milk, but since the flour’s already in there we just add milk,” Jay said. He’d taken over reading the recipe again. 

“Yessir,” a good amount of milk was poured into the bowl. Then a bit more, just in case. Cole had given up on measurements a while ago.

“It can be scooped into the pan now,” Jay said. 

“It still looks awful,” Cole frowned. The batter resembled some sort of half formed goop monster.

“It might even out?” 

“Hopefully,”

Using a spoon, Cole scooped the batter into the individual cupcake wrappers. Jay helped by scraping off the excess. Then they put it into the oven.

“Is this thing on?” Jay poked the oven door. 

“…no,” Cole mumbled. “I’ll turn it on now,” he hit the button that said ‘bake’ and watched the light come on.

“We should clean up,” Jay commented. 

Cole looked at the mess they’d made. “Yeah, you’re right. I’ll wash the dishes, you dry them?”

“Sure,”

Thirty minutes later, they had finally finished cleaning. The countertops were practically sparkling, the dishes were washed and stacked, and all spills were gone. Cole walked around the room, proud of their work, but he could smell something burning.

Jay sniffed the air. “I think something’s on fire,” he said, in the way characters in a horror movie say “I think we’re being followed.”

Cole looked toward the oven. There was no outward sign of fire, but the smell was pretty strong. It was clear something in there was burning.

“MOM?” He called out. It was an emergency! Cole didn’t want the house to burn down, or for them to get hurt. “I THINK SOMETHING’S BURNING!”

Lilly was down in an instant. How did she do that? Cole wondered.

“Oh!” Lilly gasped, hurrying towards the oven. She took the cupcakes out and turned it off.

Cole tiptoed to see what had happened to the cupcakes. They didn’t look much like cupcakes. More like charcoal, or one of those poisonous moulds he’d read about. They certainly weren’t edible. 

“That didn’t turn out well,” Jay said, breaking the silence. 

“How exactly did this happen?” Cole’s mom looked at them in disbelief.

Cole looked down at the floor. It was much easier to look at than his mom’s face right now. “It was an accident,” he mumbled. “We just wanted to make cupcakes,”

“Oh, Cole,” Mom said. And that was how he knew she was mad. Mom almost never used his real name — it was always sweetie, or Pumpkin, or Coco. “You should have asked for help,”

“I know,”

Lilly sighed. “I’m just glad neither of you were hurt. Next time you want to bake please tell me.”

“Yes, Mom,” Cole said softly. “‘M sorry,”

“That’s alright,” she said. “You can go outside while I clean this up, okay?”

“Yeah,” Cole tapped Jay’s shoulder. “Come on, Jay,” he grabbed Jay and walked out the back door.

As soon as they were outside, Cole collapsed on the grass. It was soft and quite comfortable. Jay followed suit.

“I’m sorry for getting us into trouble,” Jay spoke, interrupting Cole’s moping. 

Cole shrugged. “It’s not your fault. It was my idea,”

“I helped,”

“It was both our faults.”

They sat in silence for a few more minutes before Jay got up.

“I’m gonna go walk around or something,” he said. 

Cole got up as well. “I’ll come,”

Cole counted the plants as they walked through the garden. One rose bush, two rose bushes, three rose — no, wait, that was a shrub.

“Do you think your mom’s really mad?” Jay asked. 

Cole thought for a moment. She’d seemed worried, but not angry. Maybe disappointed. “Nah,” he said. “Maybe a little, but she won’t never let you come back or anything,”

Jay rubbed his eyes. “O-okay,”

Cole decided to change the subject. “Um, there’s a cat around here somewhere, we could find it.”

“A cat?” Jay brightened up. 

“Yeah,” Cole looked around for it. “Her name is Coffee,”

“I didn’t know you had a cat,”

“We don’t, but she hangs around. She likes to eat the catnip,”

“That’s cool.”

Aha! Sure enough, near the catnip plants was a furry lump. Cole snuck behind it, then picked it up. Coffee meowed in protest. 

“Jay, this is Coffee. Coffee, this is my friend Jay.”

“She’s so cute! Can I pet her?” Jay looked excited, his previous dark mood forgotten.

“Yeah,”

Very, very, gently, Jay petted Coffee on the head. He giggled. “I love cats,” he said, “but my dad doesn’t want one. He says they’re too unfriendly,”

Cole scoffed at that. “Cats are really friendly!”

“I know, right? I don’t get it either,”

Coffee meowed, already tired of the attention, and wriggled out of Cole’s grasp. She ran off into the nearby bushes.

“Hey! C’mon, let’s follow her!” Jay ran after the cat. Cole followed.

The bushes were dark. And also prickly. Cole figured he’d gotten at least five new scratches from them. 

By the time they emerged from the plants, Coffee was nowhere to be seen. She’d probably ran over the fence by now.

“We lost her!” Jay exclaimed. “Will she come back?”

“Yeah,” Cole answered. He looked up at the sky — it was beginning to get dark. “But we should probably get back to the house now,”

“Oh, right,”

Cole skipped a little as they walked back to the house. It would take a couple of minutes. Jay kicked at a rock he’d found.

Lilly opened the door for them when they got back. She tutted at their various scrapes and put plasters on them, then served dinner.

“Thanks for dinner, Mrs. Hence,” Jay said when he was done. “It was really good,”

Cole’s mom smiled at that. “I’m glad you enjoyed,”

“I think we’re gonna play video games now,” Cole said.

“All right, sweetie,” 

Cole grabbed his controllers on the way to his room. Jay started flipping through the games, trying to find a suitable match for their tastes.

“Lava Zombie Smash?” He suggested. 

“Sure,” Cole plugged in the controllers and started the game. It had been a while since he’d played this one.

“No! We have to use the fire punch!” Jay’s avatar on screen died again. “Ugh! Why do we keep losing?”

“This game is supposed to be more fun with four people,” Cole said. “And probably easier too,”

“Well, we need to find two other friends then,”

“Is three friends a lot?” 

“I dunno, maybe?”

“It seems like a lot.”

“Three people is like, the best number for a group, right?” Jay mused. “There’s the three musketeers, three stooges, three blind mice…”

“There’s four Ninja Turtles,” Cole offered. 

“True,”

Cole’s mom knocked on the door. “Time for bed, you two,” she said. “Make sure to brush your teeth,”

Jay and Cole made eye contact. “Race you!” They said simultaneously, running towards the bathroom.

Jay snuggled into his sleeping bag. “I still think I won,” he said

Cole stuck his tongue out at him. “Nah, it was totally me,”

“Hmph,” Jay sniffed, but Cole could tell he didn’t mean it.

“Good night, my best friend,” Jay mumbled. 

“Night,” Cole said back as he drifted off.

Ooooo, what kimds of specific experiments arw the boys subjected to? And how old were they exactly when they got taken? Was Lilly still alive when Cole was taken? How did the order find Jay if the Walkers have seeming no connection to Libber? How the hell did they find Zane?

Oh gosh, you know, just the usual experiments :) Mostly to do with their elemental powers though, trying to get them to learn to control them, but also other things I won't get into for spoiler reasons.

When it comes to age, Z2 was around 7 years old, C1 was 3-4ish, J3 was almost 2, and K4 was about 5-6. No, they were not found at the same time. In fact, the number tells you who was found first :D

Yes, Lily was alive when C1 was taken.

Jay was taken before the Walkers ever adopted him, so the Order's records would say Jay Gordon instead. (I'm still planning on bringing Ed and Edna into the story somehow. I love them too much not to XD)

How the order found the four will play a role in the actual story, so I'm not going to answer those just yet. (aka I haven't figured that out yet and am still working out the kinks.)

(HEAR ME OUT) i want to write a llorumi au fic but i have so many wips so i will write them out as headcanons as of now

this is a highschool au - mostly similar to the movieverse, but everyone is powerless, there's no ninja, and garmadon is incarcerated in jail. lloyd montgomery and harumi jade are enemies (to friends) to lovers, and they're forbidden lovers because of status quos

main notes:

harumi does not have the traits of being a princess in the canon (kindhearted, sweet) because that was a mask that she wore; that was not her. in this au, harumi is sarcastic, bold, risky, and wants to let go of her bitter past. no, she is not vengeful nor is she manipulative, but she is one of the four founders of the bikers

lloyd's personality is a mix of the show (mellow, sassy) and the movie (quiet, compassionate). yes, he's a nerd - he's part of the dungeons & dragons club and loves starfarer

the bikers are a semi-large group of delinquents who like to ride bikes and motorcycles and are like a found family for each other, mainly consisting of high school teenagers and young adults. the bikers are commonly rumored to be a gang of thieves, but within the bikers, their only real motive is simply to be a shoulder to lean on for each other in the group. the founders include harumi, killow, violet (UV), and echo (mr. e), and they usually occupy laughy's karaoke bar on friday nights

the dungeons & dragons club is run by mr. wu, lloyd's uncle, and they meet once every wednesday. the club consists of lloyd montgomery, kai and nya smith-jiang, jay walker, cole brookstone, zane julien, and morro wu. their current campaign is a story about a team of ninja trying to fight off a ghost who's taken the green ninja, lloyd, captive and under control

plot (so far):

harumi is one of the “popular students you’d want to avoid + rumored to do illegal activities with a gang” kind of people

lloyd is known to be part of the d&d club at school and being friends with the ninja (due to being part of the d&d club), and regularly hangs out with the ninja (minus morro) at school

harumi and lloyd know each other by name and surface level information (harumi heavily rumored to be part of a gang + doing illegal activities, lloyd being your local d&d and starfarer nerd). they’re in opposing groups at school which lowers chances of interaction by an extreme

that is until lloyd and harumi get stuck in detention after school

after they leave school at a later hour, lloyd and harumi get stuck in a sticky situation (that i haven’t figured out what it’d be yet) and they have to depend on each other to get them both out. tooon of banter and insults, sarcasm and sassy quips

eventually they find the bus station and they sit on opposite aisles, ignoring the other because “he’s so annoying” and “she’s extremely reckless”. but then lloyd eventually caves in and thanks harumi for helping them out. harumi doesn’t say thanks back for his help

after that incident (which surprisingly no one knows about), they start noticing each other more often outside of the surface level information they have of each other. sometimes in hallways, they make accidental brief eye contact, but they don't do anything else to acknowledge each other. lloyd’s okay with not having to talk to her at all

one week after the incident, there’s a note left on his desk in neat (though unfamiliar) handwriting that’s telling him to meet at the docks at 4pm after school today. nya leans over his desk to read the note, and lloyd has a gut feeling that he knows who the note's from. nya tails him to the docks

lloyd finds harumi in a secluded area away from the crowded areas in the shadows of one of the warehouses. harumi tosses him a keychain of one of the characters from starfarer. lloyd never knows if she ever stole that keychain or not, but he finally agrees to take it as a thank you note from harumi

the next day, his backpack is seen with the starfarer character keychain dangling from one of the zippers

hanging out / eventual dates:

at some point, harumi drags lloyd along to a party and encourages him to relax and do some illegal activities with her (underage drinking, sneaking in/out), which lloyd reluctantly agrees to

but surprisingly he finds excitement in sneaking out and meeting harumi after curfew

(note: harumi has never personally introduced lloyd to the bikers)

lloyd or harumi at one point gets their drink spiked. i think one being delirious from the spiked drink is what makes the other realize that they have a crush on them

they start doing legal activities after that

i imagine at one point lloyd and harumi go hiking and lloyd experiences some sort of near-death situation and harumi saves him from death

harumi takes lloyd bike riding (she also teaches him some cool tricks) and lloyd introduces harumi to a bit of martial arts (he teaches her how to use a sword)

when harumi admits she’s never had a cake before (or really any kind of sweet food), lloyd is determined to get her to try sweet foods

lloyd takes her to a popular bakery and he makes her try some of their sweets, and he also helps her order bubble tea for the first time. harumi finds a new liking to red velvet macarons and lychee milk tea, and she learns that lloyd loves lollipops and jasmine milk tea

by the time they start regularly ordering bubble tea, they know each others’ go-to orders by heart (including desired toppings, exact sugar and ice level)

the employees there know it, too

childhood talking:

i imagine at some point later on in their friendship they talk about their home lives and their parents

harumi was adopted since her biological parents died in a building collapse when she was 10 years old

her adoptive parents have (very) high expectations for her, but she’s been struggling with school lately so her adoptive parents have her grounded until she can get her grades up

lloyd’s father has been incarcerated in kryptarium prison since he was 8 years old

lloyd wants to hate his dad, but he misses him, and he hates that he misses him

so it ends up becoming a vent-dumping session but they bond over their somewhat shared childhood experiences and they laugh a little about how opposing their lives were and are

jealousy:

lloyd is jealous of harumi because of how bold she is. sure, she breaks the law for fun, but there's something about harumi's determination to help those who need help that lloyd appreciates. she's everything that he wants to be: confident and bold, and a lot less self-conscious

harumi is jealous of lloyd because of how he wants to see the good in everyone. there's something endearing about the way lloyd rambles about his d&d party and the latest edition of starfarer that harumi enjoys. there's traits that she wants to have from him, too: kind and wanting to see the good in people, and she wants to let go of her bitter past

when the ninja and koko find out who lloyd’s been hanging out with:

their suspicion about harumi is collective

i imagine kai specifically tails him sometimes just to be sure harumi doesn’t make any weird moves on lloyd

the ninja ask lloyd why he’s been hanging out with a delinquent to which lloyd argues that she’s not a delinquent, but their words about harumi stick with lloyd

but overall they mainly miss lloyd because he’s been abandoning d&d sessions to hang out with harumi

at some point, probably a little over 6 months since becoming friends with harumi, koko grounds lloyd for sneaking out, which eventually causes lloyd to tell the truth about harumi

the excuse he uses to his friends and family when it comes to hanging out with harumi is that “i want to just be her friend outside of criminal activity” but to himself he’s like “i can fix her.”

koko wants to be supportive of lloyd, but she doesn’t want lloyd to make the same mistake of falling in love with a criminal. koko forbids lloyd from seeing harumi again

this is also when lloyd realizes he’s falling in love with harumi and he berates himself for falling in love with someone who has a bad reputation. “this is literally the worst person you could ever fall in love with what is wrong with you you need to stop being friends with her” that kind of thing

but also she’s like a drug to him. like he wants to be around her and he wants to learn more about her, he loves hanging out with her. like there’s nothing holdin' me back by shawn mendes energy do u get what i mean

when the bikers finds out who harumi’s been hanging out with:

the bikers would be pretty surprised that harumi has been hanging out with someone who’s pretty adamant against breaking the law of all people, but as long as harumi's happy, they’re happy too

they definitely question harumi if she likes him, and she denies any romantic feelings towards lloyd (she has been denying any romantic feelings towards lloyd for months by now)

at laughy's, harumi distances herself from the bikers, looking out the window as she tries to sort her thoughts out. ultra violet notices her strange behavior and they talk for a bit

killow and mr. e reassure that all the bikers care about harumi, and if she wants to focus more on dating, they'll support her

mr. e at one point realizes that the guy harumi has a crush on is e's boyfriend's younger cousin and they take a moment to process this information (yes i'm being self-indulgent and adding citrusshipping / morro x echo)

harumi comes to terms that she does have romantic feelings for lloyd, but she's afraid that if she tells him, he'll want to leave because it'll be so awkward and they're already good friends and she doesn't want to ruin that friendship by admitting her feelings for him

lloyd notes + headcanons:

when garmadon was still around as his father in his life, their family was rich. like they live in a mansion rich

garmadon was a good person and a great dad and husband

shortly after garmadon got arrested and was sent to a number of years in prison, lloyd and koko moved to ninjago city to start a new life away from their first home

lloyd also stole stuff as a kid, specifically starfarer comics. he was also the kid that harumi saw who stole that pack of oreos (he was 8 years old at the time)

however, when lloyd was caught stealing the newest edition of starfarer, he was given a talking to by mother doomsday and lloyd agreed not to steal anymore

koko helped lloyd bleach his hair. his birth hair color is brunet, like garmadon’s

lloyd's favorite candy is lollipops

lloyd is a cat person and has a weird obsession with mythical creatures like dragons and oni

lloyd’s style of clothing is fairly casual and green oriented, and he always always wears converse sneakers

lloyd is part japanese and chinese

harumi notes + headcanons:

when harumi’s biological parents were still alive, they were pretty tight on money, but they were happy

she is a rebel with little/no cause, and she’s been a bit of a rebel all her life

i imagine the rebelling started when her bio parents were still alive. at the prime age of 8 years old, harumi witnessed some kid stealing a pack of oreos at the grocery store without getting caught and she was like “i wanna do that!” so she started stealing little things like keychains or small toys from popular stores or even graphic tees

when her bio parents found out she was forced to return them and she apologized, but she gained the habit again after her bio parents died

harumi's clothing style is a mix of punk/emo and a whole lotta purple

she also really likes keychains and pins, but she hates wearing hats

she bleached her own hair out of spite of her adoptive parents

she's a cat person and has a weird obsession with spiders. she finds comfort in the lullaby "spider in the house"

she is japanese

the queen of sarcasm

i think harumi and lloyd’s personalities would clash really well together and, given the right circumstances, a love story between them could work out :D
