Read any good books since your last update about your recent reading?
Yes, although I forget when I last shared the books I've been reading, so hopefully I don't repeat anything.
I know that I've repeated this book because I've mentioned it several times over the past couple of weeks, but I can't help but remind everyone again about Steve Coll's excellent new book, The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the C.I.A., and the Origins of America's Invasion of Iraq (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO). It's definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and it's one of the better books I've read in the past 10 years.
Other recent books that I've read and would recommend checking out:
•Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brad Gooch
•The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania, and Mutiny in the South Pacific (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brandon Presser
•UFO: The Inside Story of the U.S. Government's Search for Alien Life Here -- and Out There (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Garrett M. Graff Garrett Graff has quickly become one of those authors who I go out of my way to immediately pick up his latest books because he's so well-connected and I ALWAYS learn fascinating things from his books. I don't know if there's a writer/journalist today who has better access to the American defense establishment or proven to be more capable of shining a light on many of the most secretive aspects of the United States government.
•"Uncool and Incorrect" in Chile: The Nixon Administration and the Downfall of Salvador Allende (BOOK | KINDLE) by Stephen M. Streeter
•Life After Power: Seven Presidents and Their Search for Purpose Beyond the White House (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jared Cohen
•The Liberation of Paris: How Eisenhower, de Gaulle, and von Choltitz Saved the City of Light (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jean Edward Smith
•Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by David Mitchell
•The Rise and Fall of a Palestinian Dynasty: The Husaynis, 1700-1948 (BOOK) by Ilan Pappe
•In the Houses of Their Dead: The Lincolns, the Booths, and the Spirits (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Terry Alford
•Kingdoms of Faith: A New History of Islamic Spain (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brian A. Catlos
•Borgata: Rise of Empire: A History of the American Mafia, Volume 1 of the Borgata Trilogy (BOOK | KINDLE) by Louis Ferrante
•Soldier of Destiny: Slavery, Secession, and the Redemption of Ulysses S. Grant (BOOK | KINDLE) by John Reeves
•His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Joseph Lelyveld
•Charlie Chaplin vs. America: When Art, Sex, and Politics Collided (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Scott Eyman

Samhain
So here I am at the cemetery on the Day of the Dead, A. It never gets any fucking easier coming here. Your birthday came and went and no one left anything but me. I don't think that's ever going to not make me sad, but it won't stop me from coming. Nothing other than like... disability is going to stop me from coming. One of those dozens (am I up over 100 now? maybe...) of books I've read since you died is A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende and she wrote a line in it that was something like, "Home is where your dead are buried." Right, man. I have never been comfortable leaving Northern Kentucky for too long because that's where my grandparents are, where my aunts and uncles are...it's where you are. J talks about relocating to New Mexico or Colorado or Oregon or Newfoundland, Canada or Northern Ireland even, but we'll never leave. This is home. It's where our dead are buried.
We watched some crime/comedy show on Netflix and only made it through one episode (that happens often...I really have pretty much lost all patience for TV except Bake Off). But the one we watched talked about how dressing up on Halloween came from the Irish Samhain. Wear a disguise so when the veil lifts your dead won't recognize you, because if they liked you, they'll want to stay. Not that I was ever into costumes and shit but I'll probably never really dress up again now, even though I know you can find me anyway.
I brought your guardian bell this time. It matches mine. The one J bought me to go with the motorcycle he bought me that I was too nervous to actually ride. Remember when I got it and you promised when I got a real license and could take a passenger, you would come back home and ride behind me? 🤣🤣🤣 Shit, man. I'm sorry I was never brave enough to make that happen. 😥 Still have my bell though. It's on my dresser at home. Now you have the same one. And I'll quit worrying one day that the stuff I leave won't be here next time. The stuff I left in March is still here. But I wish something else would be here that I didn't leave. Or really I just wish you weren't here and I was meeting you for lunch instead of my mom, and as much as I love M, I wish I was watching a movie later with you instead of her. I wish the next time I watch Ghostbusters would be with you (again) instead of with my friend J for her first time, even though that will be awesome if it really happens. I wish I had a motorcycle license and could take you for a ride on the back and my bell would ring the whole trip and that you didn't have an un-ringing bell on your grave stone that matches my un-ringing one below my bedroom mirror.
Still miss you like crazy. All the time. Here's some Leonard Cohen and I guess I'll be back sometime around Thanksgiving before your death anniversary (what the FUCK, man? 😭) rolls around.
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There's a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Reflections on a Year of Reading Chilean Literature
Titles Read: Frozen in Time: Murder at the Bottom of the World by Theodore Jerome Cohen, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
When I was choosing which country I should read about, I thought about a country I have always wanted to travel to and learn more about. Chile was the perfect country for that criteria. I believe that Chile is a beautiful country. Their architecture and environmental features are what always attract my attention, however, I do not know much about their history as well as how they would live their normal lives compared to people in the United States. One thing that I learned about Chile is that they were a very socialist country. They are one of the least corrupt countries in the world now. It's amazing to know that Chile is a very socialist country because most Latin American countries have corrupt governments and their citizens get little to no help from them. Although the two books I've read are not similar at all, one thing I did pick up was that they are both very political. In “The House of the Spirits”, Clara marries a patriarch, Esteban Trueba, who is incredibly conservative. His conservative views and abuse of power lead Clara to eventually leave him. The book mainly revolved around Esteban's views. In “Frozen in Time”, the reason why they sailed to Antarctica and there was a murderer involved, was because of politics. They share this common theme of always including politics in their writing.
In “The House of the Spirits” by Isabel Allende, I learned a lot about class struggle. It was one of the major themes in the story. The book taught me how the upper class as well as the conservative people do not see and realize the struggles of the lower class. The book included the views of peasants and how they were treated by the wealthy and conservative. It has also taught me a lot about how conservatives always abuse their power when it comes to other people. Just like Esteban, he believed he had all the power in the world because of his views. This led to him harming multiple people just to get what he wanted.
In “Frozen in Time'' by Theodore Jerome Cohen, I didn't really learn much because this was a fictional book that mostly revolved around betrayal and murder. What I did learn about this book is that although it had a fictional storyline, the events they included in the story were real events. In the 1960s, there was an earthquake named The Great Chilean Earthquake that hit multiple countries surrounding Chile. It had caused multiple natural disasters like tsunamis and it was one of the greatest earthquakes that have ever been recorded. The Chilean army was lead to the Antarctic because of the earthquake which is how the murders began.
From what I learned about myself is that I do enjoy reading, it just takes time to build up that motivation to read. For example, I would willingly read something if I know that I was going to enjoy it. However, when it comes to educational reading, I feel less motivated to read because I know that I am not doing this for entertainment purposes, I am doing it just to receive a grade. Although I did enjoy reading the two books because they contained interesting story lines which kept me motivated to continue reading. In the end, reading these two books have helped me read more outside of school because in the past, I seriously lacked in reading anything.

Hello hello, I wanted to ask if you have any book recommendations? I love your taste in media, and I think your recs would probably be full of gems, but only if you have the time/energy to answer that question c: i hope you have a lovely evening!
Hiiii! This is a fun ask, thank you!
Disclaimer: when I was in school, I lived above a bookshop and pretty much every week I’d hop downstairs for a new recommendation + immediate purchase. That was twenty-five to ten years ago, and I’m not as dialled into the latest book news, especially indie pubs, as I used to. So my gems are going to be a little bit dated, but I’ll try my best.
Here’s a handy little cross-section of what you’ll find on my shelves:
modern English & American literature (English lit major, can’t help it)
Gothic horror
science fiction
queer YA
books about feminism (growing from white feminist hold-overs to intersectional feminism as I expanded my horizons at uni)
thrillers & whodunnits
the Classics (Austen, Eyre, Brontë)
contemporary novels
medieval fantasy
grotesque short stories
urban fantasy
poetry
more short stories, on the less fantastical side
some non-fiction on politics & economics during the 20th century
RECS FOR SOME OF THAT NONSENSE
For the classics and shit, honestly, I’ll just link my goodreads page (started it only this year so there’s a ton missing, especially German novels I read in my teens) because that’s super standard fare. (My want-to-read list is probably the more exciting part because that’s all the stuff I haven’t got to yet omg.)
BUT. If you want to read some weird shit, may I recommend Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez. Werewolves, vampires, ghosts and zombies. The German tagline translates to “We serve Armageddon with fries,” and that’s the sole reason I bought it. If you’re interested in a fun retelling of Arthurian legend, look no further than Knight Life by Peter David. Arthur’s up for mayor of New York City, and Morgana’s his campaign manager.
In terms of poetry, I highly recommend Leonard Cohen’s Book of Longing. It has pieces of lyrics, poems, and his own illustrations, and if you like his music, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this collection.
If you’re up for some straight repressed English people, The End of the Affair by Graham Greene is a good start. Chase that up with Ian McEwan’s Atonement and you’ll be depressed for a week.
Counter the nonsense with Living a Feminist Life by Sara Ahmed. Enraging, but good.
For some Gothic horror, do pick up We Have Always Lived In the Castle by Shirley Jackson. So, so creepy.
Suddenly, A Knock on the Door by Etgar Keret is a great collection of somewhat fantastical, absurd/surrealist short stories, if you’re into those.
We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. It’s gay, it’s haunting, just read it. Even gayer is Juliet Takes A Breath by Gabby Rivera.
More YA from my childhood: City of the Beasts (and the rest of the Eagle and Jaguar series) by Isabel Allende.
Amy Stewart writes a series called The Kopp Sisters; the first I believe is called Girl Waits With Gun. I’ve read the second novel, Lady Cop Makes Trouble, and it’s great.
For science fiction, Left Hand of Darkness is my favourite by Ursula K. Le Guin, and also a good option if you haven’t read any of hers before.
I hope there’s some stuff in there that you’ll enjoy??
Also, if you lot have some more book recs for anon (and me), please let us know!

2022 recap
tagged by @grusinskayas. ty!
top 3 films:
gonna go with movies i saw for the first time, not necessarily new releases, bc i only saw three new releases in 2022 lol (everything everywhere all at once, elvis and glass onion). anyway i'm gonna say grave of the fireflies (1988), leave her to heaven (1945) and buck and the preacher (1972).
top 3 shows:
tbh. didn't watch much new tv last year.
top 3 books:
the house of the spirits by isabel allende, just above my head by james baldwin and mrs dalloway by virginia woolf.
favorite song:
suzanne by leonard cohen as always. but in terms of a new-to-me song it's farewell angelina by joan baez
favorite quote:
this one from pete seeger, which was printed in a biography i read this year, is something i've been thinking abt lately:
the world is like a seesaw out of balance. on one side is a box of big rocks, tilting it its side. on the other side is a box, and a bunch of us with teaspoons, adding a little sand at a time. one day all the sand will add up, and the whole thing will tip, and people will say, "how did it happen so fast?"
not gonna tag anyone bc idk who to tag but go ahead and say i tagged you if you want :)
