Get Well | Demi/Cody
Demi had no idea what made her get in her car, but here she was. After texting with Cody, she waiting about an hour, toying with her own thoughts, then she got in the car. She went to the grocery store, and to the deli down the street. Now she was sitting in the driveway at the address Cody had sent her, trying to decide if she should actually go in or just drop the stuff off on the porch. “Screw it. I’m not one to bitch out.” she told herself before getting out of the car. She grab the bags of supplies she bought and walked up to the door, ringing the bell before she changed her mind. @the-codyallen

ship or sink: Demi & Cody
Are they even a couple? SINK. The chemistry is way hotter with Demi and Alex G. Plus it will piss Taylor off and then I can sit back with my popcorn and watch it all unfold.

SA: When and why did you first decide to start playing music? CA: I started playing music when I was nine. I was your typical kid, and at that time I was playing a variety of organized sports, and then I started losing interest in most of them, so my dad decided to buy me a used acoustic guitar and inspired me to try something different. After I realized that girls liked boys who played music I pretty much stuck with it. I loved expressing myself through music, and playing guitar was a definite escape from reality, especially when I was going through the awkward teen phase. SA: What bands or musicians would you cite as the biggest influences on your sound? CA: As I evolve as an artist so have my musical influences. Some of the first few records that I listened to and ones which influenced me in the early phases of my musical career are; Silverchair, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Our Lady Peace, early 90’s rock. In the last few years I have really been influenced by bands such as Kings of Leon, Mumford and Sons and the Strumbellas. Even some of the older and what I consider real country artists like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. There are many musicians that have influenced my sound, and at the end of the day I am very proud of the style that they each inspired me to create on my own. SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? CA: I think my biggest success so far has been being able to play original music in front of a crowd, and releasing four albums. This field of work is difficult as it is, for many of us, and to stick with it for this long I find a huge personal success. I have met great musicians, made new friends and met fans over the years and I will cherish those moments for the rest of my life, and I plan to create more of those memories in the years to come. SA: Conversely, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? CA: I think the ups and downs of a music career is one of the biggest challenges, at one point I was receiving a lot of attention, touring constantly and selling out shows, over the years I have lost touring members and have been left high and dry by promoters, booking agents and tour managers, it takes a toll on your emotions and it’s difficult to bounce back. The only person that can get you out of a bad situation is yourself and that’s what I did, I persevered and continue doing what I love.
SA: You mention that a 'communal recording approach' was used for the latest record, Ignite. Can you elaborate on your recent song-writing process, and how it may have differed from previous sessions? CA: I decided to take my time with this record, I wrote songs for me and how I felt and I stopped worrying about what other people would think. I don’t think I necessarily changed drastically, I just feel as though I have gone through a lot over the past few years, so naturally I had a lot to write about. After my last record “All is not Lost” came out in 2011, I felt I hit a wall and contemplated taking an extended break from music as I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did before, at that time I was living in North Bay, where I grew up. Instead of giving up, I decided to move to Ottawa to start fresh and see if I could make anything happen. Shortly after that I lost my grandmother, she played a vital role in my life and in raising me. After her passing I began writing from the heart again and I strongly believe she is one of the reasons why this album is being released.
SA: What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? CA: There is a lot of raw talent in the city, and I’m proud to be a part of the Ottawa music scene. It frustrates me at times because I feel as though local musicians aren’t as appreciated as they should be. I watch the arenas sell out with a-one-hit wonder, yet there are many talented local artists who simply don’t get the same recognition. I know this happens in a lot of cities across Canada but when it happens in your own city you become even more passionate and want to see change. I would love to see more of us breakout and put Ottawa on the map as an eclectic arts community rather than a boring government city.
SA: On your website, it states that you worked with guest musicians from the Ottawa scene on your latest record. Care to drop any names in terms of whom you've become close to throughout your experiences in music, and who you had guest on the record? CA: I didn’t want to get too many people involved with the record as it was a very personal album for me, but I have met many great artists over the last few years and I wanted to incorporate some of them in my music, especially ones I respected and who have been behind this album. I approached members of Amos the Transparent to lend a hand with harmonies and other musical aspects. Producer Steve Foley jumped on board to play drums, Jeff Logan who has become a great friend played guitar on the record and Rob Toth has been playing bass for me since I’ve moved to Ottawa, each musician played a vital role in the creation of the new record, but at the end of it all I really wanted this album to be a reflection of me, my growth and maturity as a songwriter.
SA: For Ignite you worked with Steve Foley at Audio Valley Sound. What was this experience like, and what kind of approaches and experiences will you take from the process moving forward? CA: I met Steve in 2012, we were both a part of the Ottawa Rock Lottery, a local event which raised money for the Ottawa Food Bank and I won studio time with him. We hit it off right away, and after recording with him I realized that he understood me and that I wanted to work with him again. Steve is a perfectionist and a very talented producer; he made my job easy, as he believed in my project and what I had envisioned. The new album took a year to record, most of it was due to work and touring schedules but I also enjoyed the space in between sessions, it gave me time to sit with the songs and work with them piece by piece, without the stress of a deadline. Steve played an important role on this album, not only did he produce but he also played drums on the album, he really understood my vision and he made it happen. I can’t thank him enough for his guidance and experience through the entire recording process.
SA: Lyrically, what are some topics that frequently serve as inspiration for you? CA: Lyrically my topics have definitely changed over the years, most of my previous songs were inspired by young love and heartache that came with it, in my early to mid-20’s I was also writing about the road and my experiences as a travelling musician. With Ignite I started writing songs about perseverance and tenacity, it became a theme and I just stuck with it. I met my girlfriend in the summer of 2012, and she changed my life, I began to write songs about love and wanting to protect someone who I love dearly from harm and being there for her as much as I could. As I mentioned my grandmother passed in December 2012 and I finally wrote about the way she affected me and the impact she played on my life as a little boy and a young man. The lyrics on this album are my most personal yet, and I’m very proud of each and every song.
SA: What comes next for Cody Allen in 2015? All the best this year, and thanks for chatting with us! CA: The new album is out on May 5th, we have several dates booked throughout the spring, we plan to continue to perform and get the new music out there to as many people as possible. We hope to grow our fan base and continue writing powerful, uplifting and thought provoking music.
