Hi, friend! My name is Emily and I’m an aspiring choral composer. What you’re hearing, if you’ve decided to hit play, is my choral arrangement of that beloved sea shanty, Drunken Sailor. (Yes, I know it sounds like double reeds, but that’s because Finale’s choral sounds are gross, and double reeds felt fitting.)

I have decided that this arrangement should belong to the internet, so I’m making the sheet music available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. So basically, it’s free for anyone to copy, distribute, and perform (even for money) as long as you credit me (Emily Hope) as the arranger.

Post mortem on blazing a thing: I got a fair amount of engagement, though it hasn't rocketed me to fame or anything and I didn't expect it to. Got one lovely comment and one weirdly entitled comment.

I think it'll be a while before I know if this will lead to anyone performing my arrangement, or even possibly making a video. I guess if that ever happens it'll just be a pleasant surprise.

I might do something like this again? You know, if my brain spits out another fully-formed arrangement of a public domain song in a matter of days, and it's not really something I'm gonna submit for publishing (publishers generally prefer music with piano accompaniment, or at least that's what I'm told), I might do this creative commons license and blaze thing again. We'll see.

But for now, I'm returning to my main project, which currently seems like my best path forward.

Well I guess being more intentional about composing regularly has gotten my brain juices flowing, because my brain just spat out a whole arrangement in like. a day.

I mean it's a cappella, and about a minute long, and it's not at all related to my current big project, but I gotta say it turned out nicely.
