A/N (8.27.2021): I have no heterosexual explanation for the effects Ryeowook and Kyuhyun in drag have on me (or my creative process, evidently).
Rating for mildly suggestive language and graphic depictions of geometry. Title comes from Poster Girl by the Backstreet Boys. Cover art made by me. Thanks to Amy for the beta! (Even though you're already so over high school, haha.)
Uploading this as part of kyuwook month on twitter! I actually was gonna publish it wayyy back on July 21, but I waited so I could participate in ryeonamickyuo's #kyuwooksaturdays event on twitter lol. #marketing

A soothing chime alarm wakes Ryeowook up before dawn. She lets herself stretch in bed, enjoying the warm comfort of her blankets for a moment longer before getting up for a shower. She changes into the outfit she had prepared the night before: a sparkly white sweater and a pink skirt fluffed with tulle, and she painstakingly dries and curls her long lavender hair just the way she likes it before applying some light makeup. After scrutinising her appearance for another minute, she decides to add a small braid to her hair for fun.
With ease and minimal noise, Ryeowook flits through the kitchen to make enough breakfast for her and her parents. She's feeling like sweet potatoes and tofu this morning. She leaves her parents' portions in the oven to stay warm before serving herself, and she mentally checks through yesterday's to-do list to make sure she's all set for today while she chews.
Her homework is printed and neatly filed in their own plastic sleeves as a sustainable alternative to staples.
The cinnamon rolls she made the night before, with a small batch of gluten-free versions set aside, are individually packed in a tin waiting in the fridge.
After she brushes her teeth and puts on her silver flats, she'll be all ready for the walk to school.
Satisfied with her preparations, Ryeowook hums softly to herself as she washes the dishes after eating. With the sink by the kitchen window, she is able to catch the first rays of sunlight streak across the brightening sky, and she smiles. Today is going to be a good day.
~~~
Today is already a shit day.
The alarm blares once again after snoozing it for the third time just as someone bangs on her door, and the annoying sunlight shining through her bedroom window manages to directly hit her eyes. Kyuhyun frowns into her pillow. She was having an excellent dream about kimchi ramen that is already slipping out of her grasp the more she joins the land of the conscious.
She spares a second to flip the bird in Ahra's direction, knowing full well her older sister won't see it through the closed door, before rummaging through her unruly closet for whatever passes the sniff test. She changes into a pleather bodycon skirt (just long enough to meet the school's dress code, but no longer) and a long-sleeve red crop top in a half-awake daze.
Kyuhyun offhandedly recalls she left her homework in the printer last night. Hopefully she remembers to stuff that in her bag before she leaves.
Not one for morning showers, she simply runs a brush through her silky blonde hair a few times just to get the birds' nests out, wipes the oil off her face, and swipes on a thick cat eye to complete her look.
At the breakfast table, Kyuhyun eats in silence while ignoring the looks her dad gives her, no doubt at her mildly revealing outfit. She gives him a side hug anyway before leaving her dishes in the sink for later. She finishes her morning routine, grabs her keys and homework, and shuts the door behind her when she leaves for school.
~~~
Ryeowook cheerily pushes open the school doors with plenty of time left before the first bell. Instead of her locker, she walks purposefully through the hallways for the principal's office.
"Good morning, Ryeowook!" the matronly receptionist-cum-secretary greets when she sees Ryeowook sweep in.
"Good morning, Mrs. Oh!" Ryeowook chirps. "How has your hypoglycemia been treating you?" she asks as she gathers the paperwork she needs for her homeroom duties.
"Probably better if I remembered to eat breakfast in the mornings," Mrs. Oh responds with good humour, pushing her butterfly-themed sunglasses further up the bridge of her nose.
"I thought you might say that," Ryeowook says while rummaging through her bag. "Here, I made these last night. It's gluten-free, and you can't even tell!" She offers a cinnamon roll from her tin, and she smiles at the way Mrs. Oh lights up at the sight.
"Oh, Ryeowook! You're such a dear!" Mrs. Oh effuses.
Ryeowook bows in acknowledgement and waves goodbye, the papers for homeroom loose in her hand. She finally makes her way to her locker—the inside decorated with magnets, pictures, and a helpful calendar—so that she can get the books she'll need for all her pre-lunch classes.
In the hallways, she is greeted at every turn.
"Hey, Ryeowook! I hope you had a great weekend!" "I did, thanks! Happy Monday!"
"Oh my god, your outfit is completely adorable. It really brings out the lavender of your hair." "Wow, you think? I'll invest in more pink then~"
"Thanks so much for helping with the banner last week! It was a hit at our event; everyone wanted a photo with it." "No problem; I'm so glad to hear that! Like I always say, there's no such thing as too much glitter!"
These microtransactions of joy she gets while walking through the halls energise her like nothing else. She loves being helpful and knowing people care about her enough to say hi. It makes her life as a member of the school's community and as a student leader so fulfilling.
She makes it into homeroom with a minute to spare, sets her stuff at her desk, then places the tin of cinnamon rolls on the teachers' desk for everyone's enjoyment.
The bell rings, and the wattage turns up on her smile. "Good morning!" she calls out, easily cutting through the chatter with her high and bright voice. "There are cinnamon rolls at the front for everyone. Feel free to grab some while I take attendance. The ones swirled in a clockwise pattern are gluten free, so please save them for those with that dietary restriction!"
The typical gratitudes spill out—"Oh my god, these taste amazing." "You're so thoughtful, Ryeowook!" "Please marry me."—and she preens at the praise as she goes down the list in her hand.
It isn't until she gets to a specific name near the top, until she doesn't hear the typical 'Present!' that should follow, that she gives her first frown of the day.
She quickly shakes it off and finishes up, returning to her seat with every intention to rehearse her presentation one more time before the bell ending homeroom rings.
~~~
Kyuhyun steps into school right after the warning bell for first period rings, and she seamlessly joins the throngs of people hustling to their first class.
Well, she would join them, if there were throngs to join. Students stop in their tracks and fall silent as soon as they sense her presence, causing nearby students to quiet in confusion then in understanding such that a bubble of non-motion and non-noise follows her as she walks. The typical morning chatter resumes at a lowered volume from a safe distance of six feet behind her, and she is vain enough to presume at least 40% of those conversations are about her.
The stares go unacknowledged of course. So do the hapless love declarations from desperate freshmen and presumptive date offers from cocky upperclassmen. They might as well have said, "Kyuhyun, I bet you don't have better things to do with your time than stroke my ego and go dutch on an oily dinner at a chain restaurant after school." As if.
While leaving another potential suitor in the dust, a janitor accidentally turns on an industrial fan facing her direction just as she takes off her sunglasses. Coupled with the paused state of her classmates, her languid pace through the hall looks like a slow-motion runway walk that even Naomi Campbell in her prime would envy.
Kyuhyun's locker is empty save for the jacket she just shoved into it, then she goes straight to her first class of the day. She slides into her seat—not all the way in the back; cliche, much?—and, as if on cue, the whispers start.
"Do you think her hair is natural?' "Of course not, look at her eyebrows." "She could be dyeing her eyebrows!"
"I heard she drives to school? I thought only third-years and up were allowed to do that!" "I don't think allowances are all it takes to stop someone like her."
"Cho Kyuhyun in red should be one of the seven deadly sins." "That sin already exists, and it's called 'lust,' bro." "No no no no no. There's lust, and there's Cho Kyuhyun in red."
Strangers referring to you by your full name in some sort of layman's equivalent of a celebrity mononym has such a satisfying, powerful feel to it. Alas, save for a sly smirk, these too are ignored.
The smirk is promptly wiped off her face as soon as the teacher walks in, as if their life's greatest joy is teaching 16 year-olds about Korean peninsular history at 8:30 in the morning, and Kyuhyun already lolls her head back in disinterest.
~~~
Ryeowook snaps her hand up, a lone beacon of preparedness in a sea of bored or anxious faces.
"Thanks for volunteering, Ryeowook! Whenever you're ready." The teacher gestures to the podium with a sweep of their hands, pleased with the student's enthusiasm.
Ryeowook flounces out of her seat to the front of the classroom and loads up her presentation on the laptop hooked up to the projector. "S.E.S. as a Pop Culture Juggernaut" appears on screen in bold letters, and the subtle sounds of rustling fill the classroom as students sit up in interest.
"Good morning, everyone! Today I'm going to present on the seminal idol girl group S.E.S. Through interdisciplinary and anthropological analysis, I will illustrate how the mark they've left on Korean culture at the time of their debut carries ripple effects on the entertainment industry that can be observed to this day."
She takes a moment to look over the surprised and interested faces of her classmates and teacher, then smiles internally. She's going to crush this.
She clicks to the next slide. "S.E.S. is a girl group that debuted in 1997 under SM Entertainment. That may seem like a fairly innocuous sentence on its own; in which case, I'll inform you that they are the first girl group ever debuted in K-pop history…"
When the class learned their Forensics and Communication midterm assignment would be free-form, many of her classmates asked if she'd partner with them for a debate. Their topics were interesting enough. She would have customarily had little problem arguing on the cost-benefit analysis of a college education or the validity of prison sentences served overseas (to name a few).
But she graciously turned them all down. In her heart, she knew she'd simply enjoy it more if she gave a presentation on something more personal… and studies show passion for your work drives results. She expects nothing less than an A+.
Thanks to the confident excitement lacing her voice and a powerpoint that took her two weeks to perfect, she handily grabs the interest and attention of every student in the class, even the ones typically uninterested in idol culture. She winds up leading the class in a discussion on the inherent greater interest the Korean general public reserves for girl groups in contrast to the supersaturated boy band market, and the teacher has to regretfully cut them short to allow for the other midterm assignments that had to be seen that day.
"Thanks again, Ryeowook, for that illuminating and impassioned presentation! Why don't we keep that energy going, hmm? I know it may seem like a tough act to follow, but who's ready to present next?"
Expecting the worst, the teacher is pleasantly surprised when a majority of the class raises their hands to volunteer. The teacher looks over at Ryeowook and sends a quick wink in thanks, and Ryeowook gives a thumbs up in acknowledgement.
~~~
Kyuhyun clicks 'downvote' on a thread in the r/poppunk subreddit. As if Retrieve Me the Skyline has anything on Querying Quinn.
Just then, she senses a presence walk up to her desk. She lifts her eyes up from her phone—hidden behind an obviously strategically upright notebook in a semblance of respect for the teacher—to find said teacher looking at her disapprovingly. She sighs without remorse and puts her cellphone away, not one to fight once she's caught red-handed.
"Thank you, Ms. Cho. Now, as I was saying: Just like how Korean borrows from Chinese and English words, English borrows words from many other cultures. This is part of why their grammar rules are so inconsistent. Therefore, it may be helpful to learn the etymology of certain words to reinforce these rules. For example, 'geese' is the plural form of 'goose' because 'goose' was borrowed from German, and Proto-Germanic grammar does allow for plural forms for their nouns. On the other hand, 'moose' does not pluralise to 'meese' because it was borrowed from an Indigenous American language which did not pluralise their nouns."
Kyuhyun barely has the presence of mind to suppress a groan. If this is supposed to be an English class, why is the teacher talking about German all of a sudden? She isn't gaining any more while paying attention as she was while scrolling on her phone! This is why she doesn't bother. It would take her less time and less effort to simply read the textbook.
Honestly, that's how she usually spends her classes. She's not against learning necessarily—if she has to be here, she might as well—but she is against the fluff shit that most teachers feel the need to sprinkle in to keep people's attention or reinforce learning. If it's not going to be on the national exam at the end of the year, it's just a waste of time.
It doesn't help that Kyuhyun's a whole league above the mouthbreathers in this high school anyway. What other people need several hours of studying to understand sinks in for her after a single lecture. She has the makings to be every teacher's dream student, but she's made it very clear: Don't make her participate in class, and she won't eviscerate their self-esteem in exchange. It's an elegant system with an 87.5% success rate.
As her schedule has it, the only class where it doesn't work is her next one. The phys ed grade is almost entirely predicated on participation; and unfortunately for her, the venn diagram of men who have already had their insecurities abused to the point of desensitisation by their superiors during conscription and men who decide to become high school PE teachers seems to be a circle.
Her solution for this class is admittedly less elegant.
Even as the next period is just about to begin and the halls thin out, Kyuhyun still manages to easily breeze past the bumbling office receptionist trying to prevent her from leaving the grounds during school hours.
(Hey, she's gonna get a 0 for participation whether she's wasting time sitting on the bleachers and bored out of her mind or whether she's going to the mall to grab the new Napping with Nixies album. Might as well do the fun one. Bonus: instead of paying the Korean public school system for the rehydrated prison rations they consider 'food,' she can grab lunch at the foodcourt!)
~~~
Ryeowook spends her lunch period like a jetsetting CEO, the precious few minutes taken up by meetings with various teachers, students, and—today—even an administrator.
"Thanks so much for taking the time to meet with me, Ryeowook."
"Of course, Mr. Park! I'm happy to represent the needs of my class. Let me know if I can help with this initiative again later once it gains more momentum."
"I certainly will. Have a good rest of your day, Ms. Kim," Mr. Park replies warmly, his deep voice and barrel-chested physique radiating authority and paternity.
The administrator walks her out of his office, and they bow to each other at the door. The clock in the hallway tells her there is barely any time to make it to the cafeteria and eat a meal, so she sighs and resignedly walks back to her locker to exchange her books with the ones she'd need for her post-lunch classes.
She remembers there is a vending machine along the way to her next classroom, so she pivots her route slightly so that she can pick up a granola bar and a bottle of water. They'll be easy to finish before class starts.
"You know, you'd have time to eat a real lunch and attend your precious meetings if they just expanded our lunch hour to be an actual hour," a voice says from behind her just as she feeds a paper bill into the machine.
"I don't mind. It means we have more time spent in our classes."
She bends at the knee to retrieve her purchases then gracefully hops back up to twirl on her heel, steadfastly ignoring the other's presence as she continues on her way.
"I think we can definitely stand to spend less time in class. Come on; we already sacrifice the most formative years of our lives confined to these 'hallowed halls,' and they can't even let us digest our meals properly?" her nuisance heckles as Ryeowook is followed.
"I bet the Student Council would love to have an impassioned, opinionated person such as yourself on the panel. If you have ideas for change, you're free to share them with people who are empowered to do something about it," Ryeowook comments mildly, gaze trained forward even as the other pulls up beside her.
"The student council is a mockery of democracy and only serves as a mere figurehead for the students' collective political and bartering power to the school administration, and you know it."
Finally, Ryeowook stops. She squares her shoulders and looks her antagoniser in the eye. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't mock an extracurricular about which I'm very passionate to my face, Kyuhyun-ssi."
The taller smirks. "As much as you'd appreciate time to sit and eat lunch with your friends for once?"
They are not alone in the hallway they've entered into. With an almost imperceptible turn of her head, Ryeowook can even see some students eavesdropping on their conversation, eager to hypothesise with their friends what the two most popular girls in school yet for completely opposite reasons are doing talking to each other.
"Hey, isn't that Kim Ryeowook?" "Talking to Cho Kyuhyun?" "Hold up, they know each other?"
If she could hear them, then they could certainly hear her, and that reminder is enough to reign in her annoyance. She allows herself ten seconds to collect her composure.
When she speaks again, her voice is airy and pleasant. "Well, if that's all, I have to go and spend what's left of my lunch period doing something a little more constructive than arguing with someone who'd rather complain than make the best of a situation. If you'll excuse me."
"You should have gotten fig newtons!" Kyuhyun calls as Ryeowook moves around her. Ryeowook counts it as a small blessing that the other does not follow. "They're easier to eat in class! Less noisy."
"You're not allowed to eat food in class," Ryeowook retorts plainly without even turning her head.
She can feel the other's eyes on her as she walks away, but she ignores it as she takes a swig of her water.
(She finishes her bar before crossing the threshold of the classroom, arriving before even the teacher does and finding a half of a sandwich wrap from the deli across the street waiting on her desk.)
~~~
The surface of Kyuhyun's desk is empty save for her arms and elbows organised to support her languid daydreaming. Outside the window, she watches as three red cars pass by.
More so than her other subjects, math just makes sense to her without even trying. There's less up for interpretation, there are consistent and logical rules, and patterns are clearer with numbers.
If she doesn't need to try, then why would she? So she hands in passable attempts at homework, texts throughout lecture, and is generally unresponsive during the class. Ms. Kang would love nothing more than to suspend her for insubordination and churlishness; but Kyuhyun is her best student by far, and they both know it.
"If the altitude of right triangle ABC intersects with the hypotenuse at D, what equation is always true?"
In fact, Kyuhyun would want to skip this class too, but there's just something about its specific learning environment that keeps her attending lesson after lesson.
In her periphery, the student in front of her and one row over hurriedly draws out the question in her notebook to analyse it. She raises her hand in excitement a moment later.
"Yes, Ryeowook?" "AD over AC is equal to AC over BD!"
Kyuhyun suppresses a scoff. The teacher smiles sympathetically, knowing that Ryeowook is doing her best, and says, "Sorry, but no."
Ryeowook pouts. "Aigoooo," she intones as she looks back at her drawing, no doubt trying to understand where she went wrong.
Encouraged by Ryeowook's attempt, more students try their hand at the problem.
"AC over AD equals BD over BC?" "Nope."
"AD over CD equals DB over CD!" "If you bothered to write that down, you'd immediately see why that cannot possibly be the correct answer."
The class lapses into silence, and Ms. Kang begins calling out desperately. "Anyone? Anyone else?" When it was apparent no one else knew the answer, she sighs. "Kyuhyun?"
"AD over AC is equal to CD over BC," she recites boredly, gaze still trained beyond the window. Forget being capable of immediately answering a direct question; if anyone had been observing her during this lesson, they would have thought she wasn't even paying attention at all.
"That is correct," the teacher admits begrudgingly. "Remember class, due to the AA Similarity Postulate…"
Kyuhyun lets the teacher's words drift in one ear and out the other, heeding no further sounds until the bell rings.
The end of the school day is finally upon them.
As much as she looks forward to this point every day, she sits in her chair and lets every other student file out first before packing her things. She's in no rush.
Kyuhyun drops her bookbag off at her locker and wanders the halls aimlessly instead, spending extra time in the art corridor to see the latest student works. The freshmen are working on watercolours, apparently.
After an unfortunate encounter in the bathroom, she beelines for the cafeteria, which happens to be in a completely other building, and runs into the second-to-last person she wants to see right now.
"What are you still doing here, Ms. Cho?" Mr. Park asks with suspicion.
"Just hanging out," she says with a shrug.
"I know you refuse to partake in any of our extracurriculars, but don't you have something better to do than loiter? I'm sure you have homework or some such."
"Maybe if this school started offering a curriculum that actually required me to reinforce what I learned at home, I would."
Mr. Park's eyes narrow in contempt. "Whatever delinquent nonsense you're up to, do it outside of my high school!" he bellows.
Kyuhyun's phone buzzes in her hand just then, and she uses the same hand to offer a sarcastic salute. "Your wish, Mr. Park," she offers in parting before rushing as fast as she can to her locker. She can't wait to get home.
~~~
When her home's doorbell rings its seasonal chime, Ryeowook is several pages deep into her biology packet. She begrudgingly sets down her work and gets up to look out the window.
Her view is exasperating.
"You weren't in homeroom this morning… again," she says in lieu of a greeting, walking back to where she was doing homework in the living room after letting in the guest.
"Babe, don't be like that," the guest whines while she takes off her shoes. "You know that homeroom is a gigantic waste of time. It's just Big Academia's way of—"
"—'Training students to get used to being herded like cattle,' yeah yeah. Tell it to someone who cares."
"Oh? This isn't a suggestion I should take to your precious student council?"
"I don't have time for you right now. I have a whole biology packet to complete before I can start baking," Ryeowook says as she waves said packet in the air for emphasis.
Kyuhyun pouts with her whole face. "Why bother letting me over if you're not even going to pay attention to me!"
Ryeowook sighs and repositions her laptop to rest on the arm of the couch, invitation unspoken. Kyuhyun drops her petulant act immediately and happily trods over to stretch out on the couch and rest her head on her girlfriend's lap. She wiggles in place to get comfortable and pulls out her phone. Ryeowook's typing provides a light, inconsistent soundtrack to her mindless scrolling; and it feels nice.
"How'd your presentation go?" she asks after a while.
"I almost accidentally commandeered the whole period because people were so excited about my topic." Ryeowook tried going for deadpan, but the pride in her voice was unmistakable.
"Well, duh. No one can listen to you talk about something you're interested in and stay indifferent."
"Yeah, it's cool how emotions are infectious," Ryeowook comments offhandedly.
"Sure, but I meant specifically you. You're, like, the most passionate person I know. I bet you had the best topic out of anyone there, anyway."
Ryeowook doesn't reply, but Kyuhyun cranes her neck just enough to watch a grateful and pleased smile cross the other's face.
Satisfied with how awesome of a girlfriend she is, she keeps going. "Did you like the wrap?"
Kyuhyun can somehow feel the change a split-second before she hears it. "It was delicious; thank you; and never do it again," Ryeowook responds with a clipped tone.
Kyuhyun rolls her eyes. "Stop sacrificing your lunch time for things that can be handled over email, and maybe I will."
"I meant skipping class; and don't even try to deny it!" Ryeowook adds as soon as she hears Kyuhyun's sharp intake of breath in preparation for a non-sequitur argument. "I know you. You thought to do it only because you passed by the deli on your way back from wherever truant kids spend their time."
"Napping with Nixies released a new album," Kyuhyun defends.
"And the store would have still had copies for you to buy during the weekend," Ryeowook retorts.
"First day sales are important, Ryeowook!"
"So is your education, Kyuhyun!" Ryeowook parrots back in the same whining tone.
"Spoken like a true cog in Big Academia's machine."
"This sentence probably won't make sense to a self-inflicted lone wolf, but collaboration happens best in person. And I prefer a small lunch anyway." Ryeowook tacks on that last bit like an afterthought. Kyuhyun might have believed her, except she's seen the way Ryeowook packs for picnic dates and knows that statement to be patently untrue.
"You could stand to be a bit more selfish with your time, you know."
"You could stand to be a bit more courteous in general, so I guess we both have things we need to work on," Ryeowook fires back easily.
Kyuhyun strikes the couch with her arms in offense. "I'm plenty courteous! I bought you lunch 'cause I knew you wouldn't have had a real meal otherwise!"
"I meant to people that aren't me!" Ryeowook clarifies exasperatedly.
"Hmph. People that aren't you don't deserve it. It's like Kanye-sunbaenim says: 'Asshole to the world but never to your girl.'"
"… I don't know what's worse: that I'm dating a girl that gets her love advice from Kanye West or the fact that I had to hear the phrase 'Kanye-sunbaenim' with my own two ears."
"Well, what if I told you I also get my life advice from Kimmy K-unnie? That way it counts as women empowerment. Don't you like that kind of stuff?"
Ryeowook finally tears her focus away from her work to eye Kyuhyun incredulously.
Kyuhyun innocently looks up through her eyelashes to meet the other's gaze. "Well if you're not into what I'm posting, don't look."
Mercilessly, Ryeowook shoves Kyuhyun off her lap. "Goodbye," she says as she places her laptop back on her folded legs.
Kyuhyun scrambles up from the floor and looks at the laptop with thinly veiled disdain and jealousy. "Let me back!"
"Not until you're nicer to people."
"I'm nice to people! Today, I heard Yom Syejin gossipping in the bathroom that the only way I could have avoided detention this year is by blowing Mr. Park, and I managed to walk away without dunking her head in the toilet. That seems plenty nice to me."
"Excuse me, Yom Syejin said what?!"
Ah shit, Kyuhyun knew she shouldn't have said anything. This is what she gets for thinking humourous delivery is enough to mask unfortunate content.
"Really, it's not a big deal. I handled it," Kyuhyun maintains.
"I'm sure you did, honey. Come on, help me bake some snickerdoodles," Ryeowook says as she immediately heads into the kitchen.
This would be an excellent idea, except that Kyuhyun can clearly see Ryeowook's biology packet is still unfinished and that Ryeowook's tone of voice sounded disingenuously peppy.
~~~
Ryeowook makes it into homeroom the next day with a minute to spare, sets her stuff at her desk, then places a tin of snickerdoodles on the teachers' desk for everyone's enjoyment.
The bell rings, and the wattage turns up on her smile. "Good morning!" she calls out, easily cutting through the chatter with her high and bright voice. "There are snickerdoodles at the front for everyone. Feel free to grab some while I take attendance. I didn't have time last night to make as many as I wanted to, so I evenly divided the batch into goodie bags for you all! I wrote your names on them too, so please only take one. I'll know if you don't," she faux-threatens with a cute wink.
The typical gratitudes spill out—"You're the best!" "Thanks, Ryeowook!" "Please marry me?"—and she preens at the praise as she goes down the list in her hand.
It isn't until she notices one person in particular eagerly grabbing her designated bag that Ryeowook lets a private smile cross her face.
Texas Cities: Austin
We spent 1 week in Austin, working from home at an Airbnb with 2 desks(!) in North Austin near a yuppie food/shopping area called The Domain. Most of our exploring was limited to a Friday that we took off work, and we were grateful to have our car to explore different parts of the city. Austin seems like a good place to live, and a fun place to visit anytime besides the extremely hot summer, when we were here. Below are our recommendations!
Veggie Food
Tex Mex We really liked all of these places, but there are plenty of other options in Austin as well!
The Vegan Yacht (south of downtown): Has an especially delicious tempeh burrito called the “freeto” ($9) with fritos! They are a bit salty but add a great crunch. It’s combined with a vegan store that had a really fun selection of vegan items that aren’t always found in grocery stores. Parking: free.
Velvet Taco (multiple locations): We love their korean taco (with tofu) and the cauliflower taco (surprisingly tasty). We tried their other 3 vegetarian tacos and didn’t love them. They have meat options as well. This is a chain that we also enjoyed in Houston. Both locations we visited had outdoor seating and had somewhat of a Chipotle vibe (in a good way). Parking: Varies. It was free and easily available at both locations we tried.
Torchy’s (multiple locations): We really enjoyed their migas taco ($3) for breakfast, friendly service, and outdoor seating. If Velvet Taco : Chipotle then Torchy’s : Taco Bell. We would eat here again. Parking: Free and plentiful at the location we visited south of the river.
Other
1886 Cafe & Bakery (Sixth St): This has turned into much more of a tourist attraction than it was when I was in Austin for SXSW 2012; it is listed as a top 10 Austin attraction on several lists online. While it used to have a slightly upscale vibe and involved full table service, now you line up to order at the counter, it’s more crowded, and the cafe feels slightly dirty. However, the Texas-shaped waffle with pecans, fruit, & whipped cream ($14) is still as delicious as I remembered, and eating in the lobby of the Driskill Hotel is pretty nice. Parking: Difficult. We lucked out and found street parking about a 5-minute walk away. You can pay for street parking using the ATX app or a payment kiosk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Driskill Lobby - you can eat your food from 1886 Cafe here.
Tumblr media
Flower Child (The Domain): This is a great little vegan chain with True Food Kitchen vibes. We tried it in Dallas and really liked the Glow Bowl and a thai wrap. Parking: The Domain has free parking garages with plenty of space.
Pro Tip: Maybe avoid Indian food in Austin. We heard this from a friend, and tried a pretty highly rated South Indian restaurant in North Austin that was very mediocre.
To Do (Stuff We Liked)
Zilker Park Botanical Garden ($8 non-Austin residents, free with American Horticultural Society membership): This is a very pretty place to visit and walk around. In particular, the Japanese Garden has some stunning ponds and the Prehistoric Garden has a very nice waterfall. It opens at 9am - if you’re here in the summer, go as early as possible to beat the heat! The walking path throughout the garden is somewhat shaded but it is still very hot. And wear comfortable shoes - it can be a bit wet and muddy so sandals are not ideal. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Tumblr media
Texas State Capitol (free): We really enjoyed our visit. The building is beautiful and allows visitors to roam freely through the lobby and halls. There are free informational tours every ~30 mins, or you can take a self-guided tour using your mobile phone (you call a phone number and enter a code for each item you want to hear about). We enjoyed visiting the Senate and House chambers - there are even staff there to answer questions. It’s also neat to see the portraits of Texas governors lining the rotunda walls on every floor. The air conditioning makes this a great break from the summer heat, and the restrooms were very clean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Parking: You can park at the Capitol Parking Garage for free for up to 2 hours, and rates after that are quite cheap. It’s also just a ~10 min walk from there to Sixth Street, so it could make sense to leave your car here rather than trying to find street parking or paying $30+ to use a downtown parking garage.
St. Elmo Brewing Company (or other breweries): There are lots of breweries in and around Austin! We happened to visit this one and thought the outdoor, shaded picnic table seating was very nice. Half pints were reasonably priced at $3.50-$5 and we really liked the “Since, Like, Forever” (a double IPA). There is also a food truck in the beer garden - we didn’t eat, but it was nice to have as an option. Indoor seating is also good if you need to cool off. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Walnut Creek Metro Park (North Austin): We somewhat randomly visited here on a Thursday evening for a scenic walk. The trail we walked was very pretty and right by a stream. This seems like a great place to visit if you live in Austin. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Tumblr media
Sixth Street (downtown Austin): If you’re staying downtown + aren’t as much of a grandma as I am, I can attest from my college days that this can be a fun place to bar hop in the evening and listen to live music. There is also a Velvet Taco on Sixth Street, which is an automatic win.
To Stay:
Our Airbnb was in North Austin, right on the North Star Greenbelt (which was very pleasant for evening walks). The neighborhood was a bit run down and the house seemed very old and run down, so while we didn’t feel unsafe, we don’t necessarily recommend this area.
Downtown Austin is probably a fun place to stay, but parking is very expensive. We looked at a handful of Marriott Hotels, all of which charged $50 per night for parking. Given this, we were happy to stay away from downtown; the 20-minute drive wasn’t a problem.
Our Tuesday + Biggest Baby Product Flops
Hey, hey! What’s cookin’ with you guys today? I’m checking in this afternoon with a recap of our day yesterday. I managed to snap pics of the madness around here all day long so if day-in-the-life style posts with an emphasis on food, fitness and family are your jam, hop on board and join me on our crazy train!
Morning
My morning began at 4:30 a.m. when Ryder began crying from his crib. He usually sleeps in until around 7 a.m. but a leaky diaper had him up extra early, so I stripped his crib, nursed him and rocked him for a bit in his nursery and somehow he miraculously went back to sleep. Phew!
Once I had Ryder settled back down for the day, I headed downstairs and ate a muffin topped with almond butter and said goodbye to Ryan before he headed out to meet up with a friend for a workout before work. (My muffin was a sweet potato muffin that I made by following my recipe for Chase’s favorite whole wheat pumpkin muffins. I simply swapped canned pureed sweet potato for the pumpkin and they turned out great!) I used the rest of my kid-free pre-dawn morning time to respond to time-sensitive emails and schedule a handful of social media shares.
About 90 minutes later, Ryder was up for the day and I nursed him again and brought him downstairs to play in his activity jumper while I made myself a cup of coffee. I’ve been making a mix of decaf + regular caffeinated coffee lately and topped off my cup with some foamy coconut milk.
I much prefer coconut milk from a can to the coconut milk that comes in a carton because it’s 10 times creamier. I just store the remaining coconut milk in a mason jar to use throughout the week and it works like a charm.
Chase was up around 7 a.m. and Ryder joined me in Chase’s room where we eased into the day by reading some books before we all got dressed and headed back downstairs for breakfast. On the menu for the boys = Eggs scrambled in coconut oil, waffles and a banana, plus some puffs to keep Ryder occupied while Chase helped me make the eggs!
After breakfast, Chase entertained Ryder while I packed his lunch for school and loaded up the car. I did the whole preschool drop off + settling Ryder down for his morning nap routine before making myself an egg white oatmeal protein pancake and a smoothie for breakfast 2.0. (FYI, I’ve been adding a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to my egg white protein pancake recipe and think the pancake is even better that way!)
And yes, I forgot to flip my protein pancake on the stove top as I was making my smoothie, hence its less-than-desirable appearance. At least it still tasted good!
My smoothie, on the other hand, looked and tasted good. I added Califia Farms’ probiotic drinkable yogurt to the Daily Harvest dragon fruit smoothie base before blending everything up and loved every last sip!
I’m still ordering regular deliveries of Daily Harvest cups and while I generally opt for the Harvest Bowls over the smoothies (simply because smoothies aren’t all that hard for me to make on my own), I do thoroughly enjoy the smoothies made with ingredients I don’t usually have on hand like dragon fruit, acai and lychee. (The mint + cacao smoothie will forever be my favorite! I cannot for the life of me replicate it at home which drives me a little bananas since the ingredients aren’t all that unusual.) If you’re looking for Harvest Bowl recommendations, two of my favorites are the Butternut Squash + Chimichurri and the Cauliflower Rice + Pesto bowls. They’re both fantastic and I usually add chickpeas, leftover chicken thighs or shrimp the bowls to give them a little more staying power for lunch. And just a reminder, if you want to give Daily Harvest a try, you can use my affiliate code pbfingers and get three free cups on your next order!
I polished off my smoothie and protein pancake while I worked on the computer and Ryder slept. Ryder took a decent nap which was wonderful and allowed me to get a bunch of work done.  Once he was up, I nursed him and set him up in his high chair for a snack.
He’s into grabbing and tasting anything and everything these days so I used his curiosity to help me get through a little dinner prep. While I chopped veggies for a curry dish, I gave Ryder some leftover roasted broccoli and passed spoons, baby shakers and other toys his way to entertain him. It worked like a charm and I ended up having enough time to finish off the curry on the stove top before we had to leave for Chase’s preschool pickup.
  Afternoon
By the time we were home from school, Chase was ready for a snack so I re-plated some of the uneaten food from his lunch along with a muffin and we headed upstairs for “picnic + stories” before the boys’ naps. I really, really try my best to get Chase and Ryder’s afternoon naps to sync up and lately I’ve been lucky and get about 45 minutes of afternoon nap overlap which is fantastic. I used this time yesterday to complete a quick garage workout with the baby monitor in tow and it felt good to sweat a bit.
My workout for the day started with 10 minutes of incline walking on the treadmill and concluded with about 20 minutes of upper body strength training. I followed my Everything One Minute Upper Body Workout and completed the exercises while I streamed part of the latest episode of The Bachelor.
Once I was done with my workout, I had just enough time to take a speedy shower and scarf down leftovers for lunch before Chase was up.
In my bowl: Moroccan marinated tofu, black lentils, corn, roasted broccoli and roasted Brussels sprouts.
Chase was up from his nap first and not long after, Ryder joined the party. We hung out a home for a bit while the boys played and I did some laundry. I wanted to wash the lining of Ryder’s two Rock ‘n’ Plays so we could store them up in the attic and of course I couldn’t help but have a mom moment when I realized we officially have a baby who is too big for the Rock ‘n’ Play now. How did this happen!?
It also made me think about how much we LOVED our Rock ‘n’ Plays for both babies and how similar Chase and Ryder seem to be when it comes to their baby product preferences. They were both all about the Ollie Swaddle and Merlin Magic Sleep Suit for sleep and the Baby Einstein Activity Jumper is, without a doubt, Ryder’s favorite playtime jumper just like it was for Chase.
Unfortunately this means the stuff Chase didn’t like was also a big-time flop with Ryder. Let’s just say the 4Moms RockaRoo was my biggest waste of money for both boys and I actually ended up passing it along to my sister whose daughter thankfully loves it! This made me wonder if any of you out there with multiple children noticed the same thing. Did your kids have similar preferences or were they totally different? Also, I’m curious to know what baby products everyone else’s babies seemed to love that your little one just didn’t like at all? What baby stuff works varies so much baby to baby so it’s always interesting for me to hear about what works and doesn’t work for certain kids!
Eventually the afternoon sunshine outside called to us and I figured we all could benefit from some fresh air. I leashed Sadie up and loaded the boys in the double stroller and we headed out off on a walk around the neighborhood.
It’s back to rainy weather again today so I’m glad we took advantage of the gorgeous sunshine when we did yesterday. Afternoon walks are my favorite and I am feeling very, very ready for spring.
Evening
By the time we made it home, Ryan was on his way home from work and everyone was ready for dinner. I reheated the curry I made earlier in the day and we dug in!
After dinner, I settled Ryder down for the night while Ryan and Chase played downstairs and then I said goodbye to my boys before driving off to a local coffee shop to meet up with my small group. We’re almost done with our latest study (we’re doing the David study from Love God Greatly) and it was really nice to get together and chat over a hot mug of tea.
I made it home for the night around 9:30 p.m. and Ryan and I caught up for a bit while I made myself a cup of Four Sigmatic hot cacao topped with frothy whole milk before bed.
I spent some time reading my latest book, Along the Infinite Sea, the third book in the Schuyler Sisters series I’m loving, and read until my eyes could no longer stay open. And now we’re all caught up! I hope you guys are having a great week so far!
⭐ So you want to learn pixel art? ⭐
🔹 Part 1 of ??? - The Basics!
Hello, my name is Tofu and I'm a professional pixel artist. I have been supporting myself with freelance pixel art since 2020, when I was let go from my job during the pandemic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My progress, from 2017 to 2024. IMO the only thing that really matters is time and effort, not some kind of natural talent for art.
This guide will not be comprehensive, as nobody should be expected to read allat. Instead I will lean heavily on my own experience, and share what worked for me, so take everything with a grain of salt. This is a guide, not a tutorial. Cheers!
🔹 Do I need money?
NO!!! Pixel art is one of the most accessible mediums out there.
I still use a mouse because I prefer it to a tablet! You won't be at any disadvantage here if you can't afford the best hardware or software.
Because our canvases are typically very small, you don't need a good PC to run a good brush engine or anything like that.
✨Did you know? One of the most skilled and beloved pixel artists uses MS PAINT! Wow!!
🔹 What software should I use?
Here are some of the most popular programs I see my friends and peers using. Stars show how much I recommend the software for beginners! ⭐
💰 Paid options:
⭐⭐⭐ Aseprite (for PC) - $19.99
This is what I and many other pixel artists use. You may find when applying to jobs that they require some knowledge of Aseprite. Since it has become so popular, companies like that you can swap raw files between artists.
Aseprite is amazingly customizable, with custom skins, scripts and extensions on Itch.io, both free and paid.
If you have ever used any art software before, it has most of the same features and should feel fairly familiar to use. It features a robust animation suite and a tilemap feature, which have saved me thousands of hours of labour in my work. The software is also being updated all the time, and the developers listen to the users. I really recommend Aseprite!
⭐ Photoshop (for PC) - Monthly $$
A decent option for those who already are used to the PS interface. Requires some setup to get it ready for pixel-perfect art, but there are plenty of tutorials for doing so.
Animation is also much more tedious on PS which you may want to consider before investing time!
⭐⭐ ProMotion NG (for PC) - $19.00
An advanced and powerful software which has many features Aseprite does not, including Colour Cycling and animated tiles.
⭐⭐⭐ Pixquare (for iOS) - $7.99 - $19.99 (30% off with code 'tofu'!!)
Probably the best app available for iPad users, in active development, with new features added all the time.
Tumblr media
Look! My buddy Jon recommends it highly, and uses it often.
One cool thing about Pixquare is that it takes Aseprite raw files! Many of my friends use it to work on the same project, both in their office and on the go.
⭐ Procreate (for iOS) - $12.99
If you have access to Procreate already, it's a decent option to get used to doing pixel art. It does however require some setup. Artist Pixebo is famously using Procreate, and they have tutorials of their own if you want to learn.
⭐⭐ ReSprite iOS and Android. (free trial, but:) $19.99 premium or $$ monthly
ReSprite is VERY similar in terms of UI to Aseprite, so I can recommend it. They just launched their Android release!
🆓 Free options:
⭐⭐⭐ Libresprite (for PC)
Libresprite is an alternative to Aseprite. It is very, very similar, to the point where documentation for Aseprite will be helpful to Libresprite users.
⭐⭐ Pixilart (for PC and mobile)
A free in-browser app, and also a mobile app! It is tied to the website Pixilart, where artists upload and share their work. A good option for those also looking to get involved in a community.
⭐⭐ Dotpict (for mobile)
Dotpict is similar to Pixilart, with a mobile app tied to a website, but it's a Japanese service. Did you know that in Japanese, pixel art is called 'Dot Art'? Dotpict can be a great way to connect with a different community of pixel artists! They also have prompts and challenges often.
🔹 So I got my software, now what?
◽Nice! Now it's time for the basics of pixel art.
❗ WAIT ❗ Before this section, I want to add a little disclaimer. All of these rules/guidelines can be broken at will, and some 'no-nos' can look amazing when done intentionally.
The pixel-art fundamentals can be exceedingly helpful to new artists, who may feel lost or overwhelmed by choice. But if you feel they restrict you too harshly, don't force yourself! At the end of the day it's your art, and you shouldn't try to contort yourself into what people think a pixel artist 'should be'. What matters is your own artistic expression. 💕👍
◽Phew! With that out of the way...
🔸"The Rules"
There are few hard 'rules' of pixel art, mostly about scaling and exporting. Some of these things will frequently trip up newbies if they aren't aware, and are easy to overlook.
🔹Scaling method
There are a couple ways of scaling your art. The default in most art programs, and the entire internet, is Bi-linear scaling, which usually works out fine for most purposes. But as pixel artists, we need a different method.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both are scaled up x10. See the difference?
On the left is scaled using Bilinear, and on the right is using Nearest-Neighbor. We love seeing those pixels stay crisp and clean, so we use nearest-neighbor.
(Most pixel-art programs have nearest-neighbor enabled by default! So this may not apply to you, but it's important to know.)
🔹Mixels
Mixels are when there are different (mixed) pixel sizes in the same image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have scaled up my art- the left is 200%, and the right is 150%. Yuck!
As we can see, the "pixel" sizes end up different. We generally try to scale our work by multiples of 100 - 200%, 300% etc. rather than 150%. At larger scales however, the minute differences in pixel sizes are hardly noticeable!
Mixels are also sometimes seen when an artist scales up their work, then continues drawing on it with a 1 pixel brush.
Tumblr media
Many would say that this is not great looking! This type of pixels can be indicative of a beginner artist. But there are plenty of creative pixel artists out there who mixels intentionally, making something modern and cool.
🔹Saving Your Files
We usually save our still images as .PNGs as they don’t create any JPEG artifacts or loss of quality. It's a little hard to see here, but there are some artifacts, and it looks a little blurry. It also makes the art very hard to work with if we are importing a JPEG.
Tumblr media
For animations .GIF is good, but be careful of the 256 colour limit. Try to avoid using too many blending mode layers or gradients when working with animations. If you aren’t careful, your animation could flash afterwards, as the .GIF tries to reduce colours wherever it can. It doesn’t look great!
Tumblr media
Here's an old piece from 2021 where I experienced .GIF lossiness, because I used gradients and transparency, resulting in way too many colours.
🔹Pixel Art Fundamentals - Techniques and Jargon
❗❗Confused about Jaggies? Anti-Aliasing? Banding? Dithering? THIS THREAD is for you❗❗ << it's a link, click it!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is THE tutorial of all time for understanding pixel art. These are techniques created and named by the community of people who actually put the list together, some of the best pixel artists alive currently. Please read it!!
🔸How To Learn
Okay, so you have your software, and you're all ready to start. But maybe you need some more guidance? Try these tutorials and resources! It can be helpful to work along with a tutorial until you build your confidence up.
⭐⭐ Pixel Logic (A Digital Book) - $10 A very comprehensive visual guide book by a very skilled and established artist in the industry. I own a copy myself.
⭐⭐⭐ StudioMiniBoss - free A collection of visual tutorials, by the artist that worked on Celeste! When starting out, if I got stuck, I would go and scour his tutorials and see how he did it.
⭐ Lospec Tutorials - free A very large collection of various tutorials from all over the internet. There is a lot to sift through here if you have the time.
⭐⭐⭐ Cyangmou's Tutorials - free (tipping optional) Cyangmou is one of the most respected and accomplished modern pixel artists, and he has amassed a HUGE collection of free and incredibly well-educated visual tutorials. He also hosts an educational stream every week on Twitch called 'pixelart for beginners'.
⭐⭐⭐ Youtube Tutorials - free There are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on YouTube, but it can be tricky to find the good ones. My personal recommendations are MortMort, Brandon, and AdamCYounis- these guys really know what they're talking about!
🔸 How to choose a canvas size
When looking at pixel art turorials, we may see people suggest things like 16x16, 32x32 and 64x64. These are standard sizes for pixel art games with tiles. However, if you're just making a drawing, you don't necessarily need to use a standard canvas size like that.
What I like to think about when choosing a canvas size for my illustrations is 'what features do I think it is important to represent?' And make my canvas as small as possible, while still leaving room for my most important elements.
Imagine I have characters in a scene like this:
Tumblr media
I made my canvas as small as possible (232 x 314), but just big enough to represent the features and have them be recognizable (it's Good Omens fanart 😤)!! If I had made it any bigger, I would be working on it for ever, due to how much more foliage I would have to render.
If you want to do an illustration and you're not sure, just start at somewhere around 100x100 - 200x200 and go from there.
It's perfectly okay to crop your canvas, or scale it up, or crunch your art down at any point if you think you need a different size. I do it all the time! It only takes a bit of cleanup to get you back to where you were.
🔸Where To Post
Outside of just regular socials, Twitter, Tumblr, Deviantart, Instagram etc, there are a few places that lean more towards pixel art that you might not have heard of.
⭐ Lospec Lospec is a low-res focused art website. Some pieces get given a 'monthly masterpiece' award. Not incredibly active, but I believe there are more features being added often.
⭐⭐ Pixilart Pixilart is a very popular pixel art community, with an app tied to it. The community tends to lean on the young side, so this is a low-pressure place to post with an relaxed vibe.
⭐⭐ Pixeljoint Pixeljoint is one of the big, old-school pixel art websites. You can only upload your art unscaled (1x) because there is a built-in zoom viewer. It has a bit of a reputation for being elitist (back in the 00s it was), but in my experience it's not like that any more. This is a fine place for a pixel artist to post if they are really interested in learning, and the history. The Hall of Fame has some of the most famous / impressive pixel art pieces that paved the way for the work we are doing today.
⭐⭐⭐ Cafe Dot Cafe Dot is my art server so I'm a little biased here. 🍵 It was created during the recent social media turbulence. We wanted a place to post art with no algorithms, and no NFT or AI chuds. We have a heavy no-self-promotion rule, and are more interested in community than skill or exclusivity. The other thing is that we have some kind of verification system- you must apply to be a Creator before you can post in the Art feed, or use voice. This helps combat the people who just want to self-promo and dip, or cause trouble, as well as weed out AI/NFT people. Until then, you are still welcome to post in any of the threads or channels. There is a lot to do in Cafe Dot. I host events weekly, so check the threads!
⭐⭐/r/pixelart The pixel art subreddit is pretty active! I've also heard some of my friends found work through posting here, so it's worth a try if you're looking. However, it is still Reddit- so if you're sensitive to rude people, or criticism you didn't ask for, you may want to avoid this one. Lol
🔸 Where To Find Work
You need money? I got you! As someone who mostly gets scouted on social media, I can share a few tips with you:
Put your email / portfolio in your bio Recruiters don't have all that much time to find artists, make it as easy as possible for someone to find your important information!
Clean up your profile If your profile feed is all full of memes, most people will just tab out rather than sift through. Doesn't apply as much to Tumblr if you have an art tag people can look at.
Post regularly, and repost Activity beats everything in the social media game. It's like rolling the dice, and the more you post the more chances you have. You have to have no shame, it's all business baby
Outside of just posting regularly and hoping people reach out to you, it can be hard to know where to look. Here are a few places you can sign up to and post around on.
/r/INAT INAT (I Need A Team) is a subreddit for finding a team to work with. You can post your portfolio here, or browse for people who need artists.
/r/GameDevClassifieds Same as above, but specifically for game-related projects.
Remote Game Jobs / Work With Indies Like Indeed but for game jobs. Browse them often, or get email notifications.
VGen VGen is a website specifically for commissions. You need a code from another verified artist before you can upgrade your account and sell, so ask around on social media or ask your friends. Once your account is upgraded, you can make a 'menu' of services people can purchase, and they send you an offer which you are able to accept, decline, or counter.
The evil websites of doom: Fiverr and Upwork I don't recommend them!! They take a big cut of your profit, and the sites are teeming with NFT and AI people hoping to make a quick buck. The site is also extremely oversaturated and competitive, resulting in a race to the bottom (the cheapest, the fastest, doing the most for the least). Imagine the kind of clients who go to these websites, looking for the cheapest option. But if you're really desperate...
🔸 Community
I do really recommend getting involved in a community. Finding like-minded friends can help you stay motivated to keep drawing. One day, those friends you met when you were just starting out may become your peers in the industry. Making friends is a game changer!
Discord servers Nowadays, the forums of old are mostly abandoned, and people split off into many different servers. Cafe Dot, Pixel Art Discord (PAD), and if you can stomach scrolling past all the AI slop, you can browse Discord servers here.
Twitch Streams Twitch has kind of a bad reputation for being home to some of the more edgy gamers online, but the pixel art community is extremely welcoming and inclusive. Some of the people I met on Twitch are my friends to this day, and we've even worked together on different projects! Browse pixel art streams here, or follow some I recommend: NickWoz, JDZombi, CupOhJoe, GrayLure, LumpyTouch, FrankiePixelShow, MortMort, Sodor, NateyCakes, NyuraKim, ShinySeabass, I could go on for ever really... There are a lot of good eggs on Pixel Art Twitch.
🔸 Other Helpful Websites
Palettes Lospec has a huge collection of user-made palettes, for any artist who has trouble choosing their colours, or just wants to try something fun. Rejected Palettes is full of palettes that didn't quite make it onto Lospec, ran by people who believe there are no bad colours.
The Spriters Resource TSR is an incredible website where users can upload spritesheets and tilesets from games. You can browse for your favourite childhood game, and see how they made it! This website has helped me so much in understanding how game assets come together in a scene.
VGMaps Similar to the above, except there are entire maps laid out how they would be played. This is incredible if you have to do level design, or for mocking up a scene for fun.
Game UI Database Not pixel-art specific, but UI is a very challenging part of graphics, so this site can be a game-changer for finding good references!
Retronator A digital newspaper for pixel-art lovers! New game releases, tutorials, and artworks!
Itch.io A website where people can upload, games, assets, tools... An amazing hub for game devs and game fans alike. A few of my favourite tools: Tiled, PICO-8, Pixel Composer, Juice FX, Magic Pencil for Aseprite
🔸 The End?
This is just part 1 for now, so please drop me a follow to see any more guides I release in the future. I plan on doing some writeups on how I choose colours, how to practise, and more!
I'm not an expert by any means, but everything I did to get to where I am is outlined in this guide. Pixel art is my passion, my job and my hobby! I want pixel art to be recognized everywhere as an art-form, a medium of its own outside of game-art or computer graphics!
Tumblr media
This guide took me a long time, and took a lot of research and experience. Consider following me or supporting me if you are feeling generous.
And good luck to all the fledgling pixel artists, I hope you'll continue and have fun. I hope my guide helped you, and don't hesitate to send me an ask if you have any questions! 💕
Ring My Bell [November 30, 2017]
COMPLETE
Summary: A social media post brings Emery and Eberhard together again for dinner after a long time of being apart. They end up having a passionate moment of sex, but ultimately, Emery ends up kicking Eberhard to the curb and leaving him wondering.
Emery walks to the address that Eberhard had provided, giving the door two knocks before he pulls out his phone to absentmindedly browse through his social media as he waits for Eberhard to open it, a bit curious to what the other man had chosen for their dinner that night, but ready to let the surprise take its course.
Eberhard hears the knocks on the door, having just finished setting the table, he picks up the two tequila & triple sec citrus cocktail's, pulling out his phone turning on the stereo, just as he opens the door, playing the iconic Anita Ward song, a playful grin on his lips, as he takes in the man, "Überraschung!" He exclaims, covering Emery’s eyes and putting the drink to his lips, "Getränk." He laughs, before moving his way back into the apartment, pulling Emery in with him, his hand still over his eyes, "Dessert oder Abendessen?" He questions.
Emery sees the door open revealing Eberhard, holding two cocktails, before he hears the iconic Anita Ward song playing as he walks in, immediately feeling Eberhard cover his eyes, and tasting a tequila-based drink at his lips. "What, that you learned to make a drink other than the whiskey on the rocks you used to make us when we'd sneak the good stuff from your parents' liquor cabinet back in our Charleroi days? Come on, E, you know I'd imply it, but never say it," he deadpans, before he's pulled into the apartment, hearing Eberhard's question. "And, E, you mean and," he faux-chides, waiting for Eberhard to reveal the surprise.
Eberhard's lips curl up into an amused grin as he recalls the memories associated with his dry words, a light laughter rolling from him, "Ah, no need for such psuedo politeness, E², I'll take that as a compliment though, glad to hear some things have improved with age, hm?" He teases, pausing a bit as his grin widens, "Hm, but. do. I?" He punctuates and draws out the words, tapping lightly over Emery's temple, as he continues to cover his eyes, linking his arm with his and leading him to the table, leaning in close to his ear, "Bzzzt. Wrong." he blows, as he moves his hand off his face revealing the spread laid out - including two farro breakfast bowls with blistered tomatoes and kale, seared tofu with sweet chili sauce broccoli and garlic studded rice, and crêpes with blackberry sauce and orange-scented ricotta. "Viola." He winks, sitting down at the table taking a drink of his cocktail, "Go willllllllld, wolf." He declares, finger gunning him, "Although, I really should've left you blindfolded for the incorrect answers, absolutely." He puts his hand under his chin thinking thoughtfully, "Aw, double dog damn." He laughs, fixing his plate.
"Well then," Emery muses, "quite impressed that you've learned to become more than a one trick pony who can jostle open his parents' liquor cabinet. Brava, E, perhaps there is hope for us all." He then allows Eberhard to lead him, hearing the buzzing in his ear before he reveals the spread, causing a small smile to twitch in Emery's face. "Incorrect, E? I'd argue that you offered me a choice and that you failed to deliver on either point. Should I blindfold you and put you in the corner for not being a proper host? For shame." He then sits down at the table, taking a sip of the cocktail before putting some of the food on its plate. "How are you going to make up for this transgression, E? Please, do tell me, I'm waiting with bated breath."
Eberhard lets out a breathy chuckle at Emery's words, "I am wholly humbled that I could inspire you so, E². Some things never change, hm?" He teases, revealing the spread, a widespread smile tugging at his lips as he hears Emery's response, "Come now, learn to think past the available choices, you must think for yourself, despite what is placed before you. I figured you would remember that." He faux chides, before he lets out another laugh at the threat, "Perhaps, if you believe you could accomplish such a feat, you are of course, free to try and exercise your will." He muses, moving to chew a tomato, a smile pulling at his lips as he takes a refreshing drink of his cocktail, "Try the food first, before you move to the punishment phase, partner. Put some perspective on it, please." He grins, tipping his faux cowboy hat, taking another bite of his food.
"And yet some things do," Emery muses, before listening to Eberhard's response. "Hm, and now that I've seen the choices, I still want both dessert and dinner. Don't give the power of choice when you aren't prepared to deliver, E." He then moves to chew some of his food, a twitch of a smile coming to his lips at the flavors in it. "Nothing like anything Lunchlady Dolores would cook of course, bless her soul and her Meatloaf Mondays, but it'll do, E, it'll do. Punishment still pending, of course." He then works at finishing his food, savoring the flavors of it all and enjoying the refreshing cocktail.
"Well, where have I fallen short?" He muses, his brow quirking as he looks over at Emery, noting the twitch of a smile, one of his own developing at the sight, letting out a boisterous laugh and turning up his nose at the mention of Meatloaf Mondays, "What a blow!" He feigns being shot, clutching his chest, "I believe you exercised your punishment with that statement alone, I don't believe I'll be able to cook again, that shook my confidence completely." He wails, "Although, now logic follows the punishment is back on you, then. For such improper table manners-" He moves to stand up, "Which is truly tragic seeing as how I had an additional dessert on the table to celebrate but now, I'm honor bound to withhold it from you." He teases leaning over Emery as he moves towards him, moving to grab and pinch his cheek, "What's a guy to do, when faced with the infallible Charleroi code of conduct." He laments dramatically, moving to the fridge pulling out the homemade caramel peanut butter truffles, biting one in half as he finishes off his drink, promptly refreshing it as he leans against the island, taking another bite of the treat, "So, what brings you to these parts, pal?" He muses thoughtfully.
"Just a general statement," Emery muses. "I'm certain you could say the same thing about me." He then hears Eberhard's boisterous laughter, and he raises his eyebrows, even as a twitch of a smile develops oh his lips at the sound. "Oh, no, E, Lunchlady Dolores was an icon. You should strive to be like her. Who else could think of such interpretive uses for spam?" He asks, before he feels the pinch of his cheek and raises his eyebrow slightly, hearing Eberhard's lamentation. "Drink whiskey and smoke on the rooftop and pray Headmaster Franklin doesn't find you," Emery offers, finishing off his drink before moving over to where Eberhard was at the island, taking one of the truffles and placing it in his mouth. "Terrible job of withholding, E. About as useful a confinement as having a prison out in an open field." He finishes the truffle, enjoying the flavor, before looking at Eberhard. "I think the real question is what brings you here? Last I heard from you, you were in Belgium."
Eberhard holds his hand up the mention of Dolores being an icon, another laugh falling from him, "Ah, you are correct. I take it back, despite our immeasurable differences and tumultuous relationship, I must give credit where credit is do, she was certainly a woman ahead of her time, able to frankenmesh such uniquely and utterly unappetizing unholy concoctions. That could only be done with the upmost sense of self and creativity. Kudos, Dolores." He says, raising his glass in cheers, a devious smirk playing on his lips as he recalls the memory, "Solid plan, don't recall that ever biting me in the ass." He retorts, before his grin widens at the thought of the youthful folly they had gotten up to in that particular spot, "-Well." He shrugs, popping the rest of the truffle into his mouth and chewing purposefully. His grin returning as he sees Emery take one of the truffles, his fist resting under his chin as he hums thoughtfully, "Wow, well, wouldn't you know it, that's always been a weakness of mine." He flashes a devilish smirk, thinking onto the origin of a particular formative nickname, quickly clicking his tongue a few times, giving him a casual shrug. "I am who I am." He smiles, at the turning of the question, "Shifty, shifty. Belgium, mmm." He muses on his time and the cumulative experiences he garnered there, "Well, that is certainly a huge chunk of the tale you need to be caught up on then, as always, time in Belgium came to an end, needed to stretch my feet some, did a lot of traveling, as you should, really racked up the experiences, for about a year or so, best times, truly. I got accepted to Berkeley, accomplished about a semester of that cool Cali cruisin' vibe, before dad fell ill, thought it best to transfer to Columbia, to be closer to everyone, reign myself back into the circle, he, uh, died a bit after that, and well, I've been here ever since, so around....three years." He summarizes, giving a small smile despite the sad memory, popping another truffle into his mouth, his gaze focused on Emery, "Boom. Spark notes of one Eberhard, Everhard, if you're nasty, or Charleroi class 2010, Vennett. You're up next, now." He smiles, shooting him with a playful one handed finger gun.
"As you should. Show some respect, E," Emery states, shaking his head, clicking his tongue a bit, before raising his glass in cheers. "Ah, and here I do. Don't tell me your memory has faded over the years, E? And here you were supposed to be the youthful one between us, shame." He lets out a small, almost chuckle. "As am I." He takes another drink of his cocktail, before listening to the story, hearing the bit about Dwight Vennett, the story having gone through the Charleroi grapevine, before he sets his drink down to tell his own story. "Here for a JSD. Been working as an attorney up in Boston after graduating from Yale Law because what better place for a disloyal Yale man to go than to Harvard territory? This all comes after finishing up my tenure on the track team during undergrad at Stanford. Published a few papers, co-authored a book, and the Emerson thing, but that's neither here nor there, Everhard" Emery shrugs, casually slipping in the nickname. "You know I'm nasty, no surprise there." He deadpans, giving another quick shrug.
A delighted grin pulls at Eberhard's lips, "Ah, do not tell me, you of all people subscribe to such a woefully archaic social construct such as that now, my, time has certainly changed things, indeed." He teases, "I have quite a few reminders of such audacious irreverent folly of youth, no need to fret, old man." He continues on, amusement lighting his eyes, prior to listening intently to Emery's story in turn, noting the professional tone he chose to use for such a thing, a flash of hurt flashing through him at the mention of Emerson, he reaches his hand out, placing it and gently rubbing along the top of Emery's hand, throwing him a knowing and soft apologetic look, he mindfully steers the conversation away from the topic, sensing it was not something he wished to delve further into, "Wow, such a beautifully broad bio, so superbly accomplished absolutely, mister. My, I am particularly positively proud of ewe." He admits honestly, extending the last word and making a playful 'baaa' sound, taking another truffle, chewing a warm laugh falling from him as he hears his response and the dead pan delivery of it, raising his brow, "Do I?" He muses thoughtfully, studying his faith, amusement and a hint of arousal playing within his eyes.
"I suppose it has," Emery has, giving Eberhard a shrug, before a smirk tugs at his lips at his mentions of their follies of youth. "Good to hear," he states, lifting up his drink in the air before taking another sip, then listening to Eberhard's story and telling his own, before he feels the gentle rubbing on the top of his hand, causing him to retract his hand, a strike of discomfort in his stomach at the apologetic look that comes across Eberhard's face, before he uses the same hand to run his fingers through his hair, brushing off the gesture. "Don't start the name jokes, you make it far too easy, Everhard," he states with a shrug, before he hears the question and sees the amusement and arousal flash through Eberhard's eyes. "Do you?" He muses in return, studying Eberhard closely.
Eberhard is caught a bit off-guard by the quickness of which Emery takes his hand back, watching Emery closely as he runs his hand through his hair, pulling back a bit, taking the opportunity to refresh his drink, taking a deep drink of it. A laugh escaping him as he hears Emery's words despite the bit of awkwardness that lingered because of his earlier gesture, "Damn, there are only so many ways to call me easy, you would think no?" He gives another amused laugh, as he takes another drink, a devilish smirk tugging on his lips as he hears the question thrown back to him, and notes the close gaze the other man was watching him, letting a casual shrug roll from him as he keeps eye contact with him, "It's all a matter of perspective, of course." He answers, taking another slow drink, "All about the context, little ewe." He winks, before he melodically and deeply hums the beat of little bo peep, a warmness coming over him as he moves from his position, and dances  along to the beat of it and over to close the distance between them and moving his hand into his hair softly and leaning in for a kiss.
"I don't know, do you want me to keep trying?" Emery states, giving Eberhard another quick shrug as he takes a long sip of his drink, before he watches Eberhard dance closer to him until the distance between them is closed. He then feels the hand in his hair and sees Eberhard lean in for a kiss, from which he momentarily pulls back. "So tell me. What's the context of all this?" He says, raising his eyebrows at Eberhard as he waits for his answer.
"I wouldn't be opposed to such a juke, perhaps, even admittedly a bit curious to see if it was merely a fluke? Lay it on me, you kook." He retorts, dancing his way over to the man and moving to kiss him, feeling him pull back and hearing his question, meeting his gaze, "Ein herzliches willkommen?" He answers.
"Ah, here we go. Everhard, did you know that you're easy like Sunday morning?" He asks, before Eberhard moves closer, meeting his gaze as he hears the other man's answer. "Ist das alles?" He questions further, raising his eyebrow slightly as he studies Eberhard.
A twitch of a smirk develops onto his lips as he hears Emery's question, "That's why I'm easy. I'm easy like Sunday morning, why in the world would anybody put chains on me?" He sings deeply and melodically, a smile twitching onto his lips at remembering the song, moving his thumb gently across Emery's lips, "Ist das alles, was du willst?" He questions back, studying the man he had been close to for so many years, and apart from for almost as much. "Ich habe dich vermisst."
"Ah, maybe because I've paid my dues to make it, everybody wants me to be, what they want me to be?" Emery muses, chucking a bit before he looks back up at Eberhard, before he feels the movement of his thumb across his lips. "Mhm," Emery says, a tiny smirk flitting across his lips. "Hat mich auf welche Art verpasst, Eberhard? In the Eberhard way, or the Everhard if you're nasty kind of way?"
Eberhard holds his grin as he hears the next lines of the song, "I'm not happy when I try to fake it! No!" He sing counters, hearing his response to his question, nodding in confirmation at the one asked back to him, "Vielleicht sind sie ein bisschen einig?" His gaze flitting down to his lips, noting the small smirk, causing him to repetitively click his tongue a few times, "Nun, Letzteres ist sicher. Sie haben das früher bequemerweise aus Ihrem mündlichen Lebenslauf gestrichen, was für eine Schande." He says, moving his grasp along his neck as he pulls him into a deep, explorative kiss.
Emery chuckles a bit more at the sung line, before he hears the question, and raises his eyebrows a bit, closely studying Eberhard as he listens to Eberhard's statement. "Well, Eberhard Everhard if you're nasty Vennett, let's just say that I missed you in the latter way, too," he says, before moving into the deep, explorative kiss.
A toothy smile graces Eberhard's lips as he lets out a little chuckle at Emery's words, reveling in the sensations of the kiss feeling a sense of familiarity laced with a freshness, he notes before quickly turning the kiss more passionate, wanting more he swiftly works on removing his shirt, throwing it carelessly onto the floor, breaking the heated kiss. His blue-green eyes almost electric, "Oh, did eweee?" He ponders aloud, throwing his shirt off, "I do believe I'm going to have to withhold you from using that name, until you produce the particular evidence that you fit such a prerequisite and can rightfully reclaim." He declares, wrapping his arms around Emery's neck, leaving hot kisses along it, and down his chest, "Rules are rules, after all young man." He deepens his voice further, wagging his finger at the man, indulging in another fervent kiss, "The backbone of our civilized society, a man that can not adhere to such principled disciplines is most certainly an eternally damned soul." He continues the words, pulling them from the impassioned speech he heard from Headmaster Franklin, one too many times, moving his hands to undo his pants, continuing the kiss, relishing in it and deeply craving more from the man.
Emery indulges in the heated kiss before they break apart, as an almost smile tugs at his lips at Eberhard's comment. "Ah, don't boar me, E," he says flatly, even as a small spark of amusement dances in his eyes. "Oh, yeah, Everhard?" He breathes, in between heated kisses exchanged with the other man, hearing the impassioned Headmaster Franklin speech, a wider smirk tugging at his lips. "What are you going to do about it, Eberhard, when I've already eternally damned my soul many times over?" He moves to work at assisting Eberhard in removing his pants before undoing his own, leaving heated kisses along Eberhard's body as he sinks down to his knees to begin his practiced motions.
"How else can I impress ewe?" He makes a subtle exaggerated boar noise, in between heated kisses, pushing the man against the island at the use of the name again, and giving him a playful slap along his face and a harder one along his backside, wagging his finger disapprovingly at the man, despite the gleam of amusement playing in his gaze, going into the speech as he kisses along his body, hearing his question and amused smirked pulling at his lips, "Ah, well, what's one more for ewe." He agrees, his voice low and seductive along his ear, "Genießen Sie die Fahrt." He lowly groans, as he leans back, bracing himself as he feels the expert sensations washing over him, carressing his hand along Emery's face, and running his hand through his hair as he enjoys the motions, pulling on his hair once he feels the sensations become especially overpowering not intent on reaching such a peak any time soon, he lifts the other man up from his knees, pulling him into a ravenous kiss, his hand working skillfully along him, before pushing him onto the dining room table, swiftly falling to his knees to continue his prior motions with much more zest, his blue-green eyes meeting Emery's own as he does so.
"Mm," Emery muses, in between heated kisses, feeling the sharp slap along his backside, "surprise me." He then gives Eberhard a sharp smack along his backside before moving to turn the tables and push Eberhard against the island, bringing him into a fervent kiss once again. "Das werde ich," he growls back, before getting down on his knees to begin his motions before he's pulled up and pushed onto the dining room table, pleasure coursing through him at the sensations, but finding something...unsettling about the eye contact, and so he pushes Eberhard up from him, moving to then push Eberhard against the table, roughly kissing him as he begins to once again work skillfully against him, picking up from what he had begun earlier.
Eberhard lets out a light laugh as he's pushed onto the table, letting out a low groan at Emery's motions, before a grin develops onto his lips as he hears the song playing softly in the background, recognizing as the Primal Scream song, letting out another amused laugh, "Willst du immer noch, dass ich singe?" He hums, in between groans of pleasure, as he winks at Emery before pushing himself off the table and Emery roughly back against the island as he bends to grab his phone, moving to turn the the volume up, and loop the song, turning back to Emery with a devious smirk on his lips, wrapping his arms around his neck and kissing him with a ferocity, ""I'm trippin' on your love, I'm trippin' on your love." He sings deeply, humming the tune of the song, moving his hips along to the beat and along Emery, pulling him along, back to the table as he continues his hungry kisses along his body, moving to push Emery hard against the table again, pushing the dishes from the dinner off carelessly, climbing on-top of him, moving along to the beat and against Emery, "Bond so strong between us, bridge between our souls, lifts me like a bird of prey, heals the wounded boy." He seductively sings along Emery's ear as he continues to skillfully move along him, pulling him into a consuming kiss.
Emery continues his motions until he he hears the song begin to play in the background softly, causing a half smile to play at his lips in spite of himself as a chuckle rolls from his lips. "Miss a free performance from the shining star of Charleroi? Come on, Eberhard, my mind has not gone so much that I'd pass up an opportunity like that," he muses, his half smile widening a bit as Eberhard turns the volume up, his own smile taking on a devious glint as he sees Eberhard's, moving to furiously kiss Eberhard as he's aroused by both his motions and his singing, assisting in carelessly pushing the dishes as he gets caught up in the moment, joining in with Eberhard in spite of himself to sing, bridge between our souls, lifts me like a bird of prey, heals the wounded boy," along with him, their voices joining together melodically as they did when they were in their choir classes Chareleroi, moving in to the consuming kiss, feeling a fire within him as he indulges in it.
A bright grin plays on Eberhard's lips as he hears Emery join in with him, the sound of their voices melding and harmonizing causing a strong shiver to course through him, as he bites his lip, his brilliant blue-green eyes shimmering as they meets Emery's alluring blue eyes, gazing deeply into them, as he continues his energized and hungry expert motions against the man meeting his pace perfectly, reveling in the immense pleasure from the sensation of being connected to him once again. The realization and sensations flooding his body, mind, and soul, not focused on anything in the heated exchange but Emery and the way their body's were so intoxicatingly in tune. An amused laugh rolling from him as he feels the roll, changing their positions, his back hitting the table hard, but not minding the sensation at all, as he wrapped himself tightly around Emery, pulling him into a fiery wild famished kiss, craving to have more of him, all of him.
Emery allows himself to get caught up in the melodic intertwining of their voices, the deep way Eberhard was looking into his eyes causing something to strike once again inside him, though this time, it is dulled by the burning fire and pleasure inside of him as he feels the connection between him and the other man and just how in tune they were, and he moves hungrily into the firey, wild kiss, feeling completely ignited by it before he ensures that Eberhard is ready for what is to come next before he expertly and intensely moves his body against Eberhard, the entire experience utterly euphoric, continuing with intoxicating synchronism until they reach a mutually gratifying destination, the experience unlike anything quite like anything...since the last time he and Eberhard were together, he realizes, with that same strike of a feeling returning to him as he pulls apart from Eberhard, studying the other man for a brief moment, truly taking in seeing the lamb tattoo in full view for the first time after all those years, and in the moment, it all just becomes too much. He moves to throw his clothes back on quickly, running his fingers through his hair, before turning to look back at Eberhard, a part of him wanting to stay longer, to fully indulge in their reunion, but too much of him in the moment wished to go, and so he gives Eberhard a quick two fingered salute before turning towards the door. "Got somewhere I have to be. See ya, E. Don't you forget about me." He sings the last part to the tune of the song by the same name, before putting his jacket back on him and closing the door behind him, lighting a cigarette once he's outside and taking a deep drag of it before walking out into the night.
Eberhard indulges deeply into the euphorically intoxicating synchronism, not holding back whatsoever, yearning to give himself wholly to the heated experience, to Emery, freely letting his ecstatic sounds of pleasure flow from him, until he feels himself reaching his peak, intensely holding Emery's gaze, expertly moving against him so they would arrive together. His efforts soon paying off as they reach a mutual release, the experience causing a euphoric unparalleled transcendence over him. He lies back onto the table, spent, his breathes heavy as he works to overcome the weakness he was feeling, in the moment, watching Emery's gaze fall onto his tattoo, a smile twitches onto his lips, as he eyes flit to it's match, tracing over it, "Du hast es behalten." The sight causing an immense warmth to flow through him, he leans in and kisses over the tattoo gently, pulling Emery into a deep kiss, moving his hand over his heart, allowing Emery to feel the beat of it, as he moves to caress his tattoo, reveling in the moment and sensation before he's caught off guard by the unexpected breaking of it. Another shiver striking through him as he watches Emery quickly scramble off of him and redress, a hurt coursing through him at how he seemed not able to stand to be around him any further, he swallows harshly a lump developing in his throat in the moment, yearning to grab him, for him to stay a bit longer, but not having the will to do so in the moment, not when that wasn't what he wanted, again. He places a smile onto his lips, nodding his head, giving a small laugh as he clears his throat, "Yeah, right, of course. In a while, crocodile. D-Don't be a stranger, ewe," He says back, watching him leave, moving off the table with a huff and moving to fix himself a strong drink, before he even thinks on beginning to clean up.
The Alley by Vikings BGC Reopens For Dine-In Guests
With Metro Manila going back to a General Community Quarantine (GCQ) status this month, more and more restaurants are now beginning to reopen for hungry dine-in guests, although with limited seating capacities. I was happy to find out last week that The Alley by Vikings in BGC has also opened its doors once again, so it was time to go back and visit one of the most beautifully designed and visually appealing restaurants in the entire city.
The Alley by Vikings is an international street-inspired food hall with numerous unique food sections and dining areas. It is the first of its kind in the Philippines to offer an All You Can Eat Food Hall concept with unlimited food and drinks. This is from the same company that brought us Vikings Luxury Buffet so you know that everyone will have a satisfying experience. It opened its first branch in U.P. Town Center but this one at the Upper Ground Floor of Bonifacio High Street in BGC is the one that I usually dine at.
Health and safety protocols are all followed at The Alley by Vikings. Health checks and contact tracing procedures are done via a QR Code at the entrance. They also follow the 20% dining capacity limit for now but this will probably expanded in the coming weeks. So now is actually the best time to visit!
The Alley by Vikings is definitely not your typical buffet restaurant. The interiors are designed to look like beautiful streets where you can get all sorts of delicious street food and drinks. Every nook and cranny is so Instagrammable, so friends and families will enjoy taking photos while munching on their favorite items.
There are several areas to choose from inside The Alley by Vikings’ expansive dining space. Everything is so colorful and refreshing. There are also areas which are more suitable for those with kids and families, although seniors and children below 18 are currently not yet allowed to dine-in as of the moment.
Now it’s time to hunt for my favorites! The Alley by Vikings BGC offers wide range of cuisines cooked to perfection, with over 100 dish selections to discover. Best of all, you can get as much as you want because these are all unlimited! You might get lost in the yummy maze of streets at first, but you’ll get the hang of it once you spot your desired items.
The first area I explored was the Japanese section by Yatai. Here I found some fresh Salmon and Tuna Sashimi together with some rolls and maki.
I also ordered a platter of crunchy Ebi Tempura. These tempura were of excellent quality, with a light but very crispy batter covering the sumptuous shrimp. Other items there included okonomiyaki, katsudon, and yasai itame.
Then I looked for another favorite of mine at the Chinese section. I got a plate of Hakao all for myself. They also offered Siomai, Stir Fry Noodles, Orange Chicken, Steamed Shrimp, Fish Tausi, and Yang Chow Fried Rice.
O’Sean Eleven specializes in its seafood selection like the Cajun Seafood and the Seafood Paella. They also had some fish fingers with go along with these.
There were other sections offering Asian cuisine like the Kaldereta, Lechon Paksiw, Thai Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Chicken Curry, and more. There’s really so much dishes to choose from so I had to restrain myself and only got small servings of each.
It’s a truffle paradise here at the Italian Station. I had some fragrant Truffle Pasta and Truffle Pizza all in one plate. They also offered other types of pizza like the Quattro Formaggi and the Meaty Pizza.
For those who like their plates sizzling, head over to the Mongolian station where you can create your own sizzling mongolian combination.
Here you will also find other delightful options like the Sizzling Beef, the Sizzling Liempo, or even Sizzling Tofu. These are served with side dishes like mashed potato and buttered corn and vegetables.
Of course, don’t miss the Carving Station which offers meaty and savory items such as the Braised Beef which you can even pair with Steak Rice. There’s also some Roasted Chicken here as well.
Aside from all the food you can get, The Alley by Vikings also offers unlimited drinks such as sodas, juices, and iced tea. Better yet, the buffet also includes alcoholic beverages like imported beers and even cocktails.
We ordered two glasses of their Cocktail of the Day which was the Ananas Brandy made with pineapple juice, lime juice, and brandy. Other wines and spirits are also available but for an additional fee.
Those who prefer to finish their meals with a cup of hot coffee can head over top Nord’s Coffee Bar where you can find the other dessert stations. You can grab some puto bumbong, sapin-sapin, bibingka, cakes, candies, and other delicacies.
There’s even a small Fishball Stand so I had to drop by and get some squid balls as part of my desserts. Ice cream was not available that day but they usually have a lot of ice cream flavors to cap off their indulgent buffet.
The Alley by Vikings is available for lunch and dinner daily for only P788+ per person on weekdays and P988+ per person on weekends and holidays. The rates are mostly similar with the other Vikings Luxury Buffet restaurants but the experience and ambiance is quite unique and different. Here's a fantastic promo to welcome everyone back to The Alley by Vikings! Get to enjoy the ultimate food hall experience for FREE when you dine-in with 2 full paying adults. This is available on weekdays starting May 24 to June 30, 2021. So now is truly the best time to visit!
Celebration Salesperson Day March 5, 2021
Tumblr media
There 19s a task amongst your employees that requires a certain skill set, an incredible ability to identify what 19s needed and when, and to know every square inch of your store like the back of their hand.
They have to be able to discern the needs of your customers when the customers themselves don 19t even know and point them in the right direction when the customers are violating that most important of policies 1CThe customer is always right 1D. Salesperson Day is dedicated to celebrating these intrepid souls and their ability to navigate the hellish pit that is 26retail.
History of Salesperson Day
Salespersons have an incredibly difficult job and are often the employee that does the most foot-miles per day around the store they work in. They know every product, every nook and cranny, and every hidden stockpile in the mythical back room.
They are expected to be the all-knowing repository of everything their store contains and, as if they are part of some worldwide hive mind of salespeople, often what 19s going on at other stores, including their competitors. Salesperson Day commemorates these amazing people and was established to ensure that they do not go unrecognized.
How to celebrate Salesperson Day
Celebrating Salesperson Day can be a fun and rewarding experience, you need merely go out into the world and treat the salespeople you come into contact with dignity and respect.
That alone will give them an experience they don 19t often receive as part of their workday. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even go so far as to bring them little gifts of recognition (though do be careful, some stores have policies against receiving gifts from customers).
If you really want to understand the lives of salespeople, there are a number of places you can go on the internet to read stories that are so utterly improbable as to strain believability.
That they come in such droves from the members of the sales staff is the only thing that lends them credibility. Take, for instance, the tale from http://www.notalwaysright.com where a customer requests a vegan beef burger. Not a tofu, not a veggie burger, apparently the customer wanted actual beef that was somehow also vegan.
There was also the time that a customer attempted to return clearly used merchandise, and these honest number in the thousands. There are so many permutations of people trying to take advantage of staff just trying to help them that it strains the imagination. Salesperson Day is your opportunity to show how much you appreciate their efforts, and perhaps remind yourself to not be one of these people.
