PWM frequency in Shelly RGBW2 controller

I received an interesting email from a reader of my post: https://teardownit.com/posts/shelly-rgbw2-controller-and-shelly-duo-rgbw-bulb-dangerous-light-pulsations

===== After having some bloody eyes and reading your article I decided to change the firmware on shelly rgbw2 with ESPHome so I can modify the pwm freq to 1500 Hz like you recommended. Don't know if placebo or not but I feel better :) .

I can test only with camera from phone with shutter speed at 1/1500 and no flicker (and sub multiples like 1/500). With PWM freq at 600 Hz I could see flicker on camera at anything above 1/600.

Don't know if this is the same you have tested but I was curious if you can test with a modified Shelly with ESPHome to be able to put higher frequency. I also don't know if there is a limit on the maximum frequency (the shelly or the COB LED strip it's dimming ) it will work and if is there any benefit in increasing any further.

I was very interested and read the ESPHome firmware description. https://esphome.io/components/output/esp8266_pwm.html Perfect!

I have not previously used ESPHome, but I have been actively using Tasmota for a long time. In this firmware I also found PWM frequency adjustment: https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Commands/#pwmfrequency

Let's do the tests!

The measurement scheme is simple.

‍ 1. Old Shelly native firmware.

I found a new old Shelly RGBW2 controller with 2021 firmware in my stock.

Measurements are taken at 25% brightness. The PWM controller is running at 600 Hz.

2. New Shelly native firmware (20230913-131259/v1.14.0-gcb84623).

The PWM controller operates at 1000 Hz for a brightness of 25%.

3. Tasmota firmware.

Firmware installation is easily done without wires and additional devices using OTA. Manual: https://github.com/arendst/mgos-to-tasmota

However, I couldn't use this script and found many errors mentioned for this device.

This is my successful script:

RGBW2 must be set to Color mode. You do not need to do anything if the device is already in this mode.

The firmware needs to be downloaded from this link: http://deviceIP/ota?url=http://dl.nekohell.eu/mg2tasmota-ShellyRGBW2c.zip

Once the WiFi network is configured, you need to use two commands through the Tasmota console (changes will be saved after rebooting or shutting down the device): SetOption68 1 // The device will switch to 4-channel white mode (if you need it)PWMFrequency 2000 // PWM frequency will increase to 2000 Hz

I set the PWM frequency by a multiple margin (I was just curious). 4000 Hz.

The optical measuring tool showed an incomprehensible picture for me. But this phenomenon is outside the scope of this post, and I will deal with it later.

Conclusions.

The Shelly device manufacturer can change and does change the PWM frequency in their firmware. I really don't understand their answer about not being able/unwilling to change the PWM frequency to a safe level.

What’s the difference between cob led strip and smd led strip?

1. Therefore, the light emitted by the COB light strip is much more uniform, linear, and has no light spots; 2. What’s the disadvantage of cob led strip? 1. The product series is single. Although cob light strips can now do single-color, two-color, RGB and RGBW, and even phantom light strips, there are fewer styles of each color in single color. Compared with ordinary smd light strips, the styles are relatively simple. 2. The technology is relatively unstable. For Symphony cob light strips, in fact, the technology itself is unstable, and product quality problems are prone to occur, such as virtual welding and signal garbled lights. 3. OEM&ODM costs are higher. Due to the high degree of production automation, cob light strips are suitable for mass production, and the cost of OEM or ODM is relatively high. 4. Can not do high power. Compared with ordinary SMD light strips, the brightness of cob light strips is insufficient; and because of circuit design reasons, cob light strips often cannot be used for high power, otherwise the brightness difference in the first place will be very detailed. 5. The market is relatively chaotic. The cob light strip is currently in its infancy, many manufacturers have entered, and the competition is fierce. In order to seize the market, some manufacturers reduce their costs by lowering their quality standards and cut prices significantly. Consumers are more difficult to distinguish between good and bad quality.

Will COB light strips replace traditional light strips in the future? the answer is negative. The cob light strip is currently in its infancy, and it will inevitably eat away part of the traditional light strip market. However, due to the large limitations of cob light strips, it is impossible to completely replace the market of traditional light strips.

How to install cob led strip? 1)Clean the mounting surface during installation Before installing the light strip please clean the sundries of the structure or the installation surface of the profile to keep the installation surface clean and free of dust or dirt, so as not to affect the sticking of the light strip.

2) Avoid sharp hard objects or high temperature objects hitting the colloid

During the installation process, avoid sharp and hard objects or high-temperature objects touching the surface of the colloid in the light-emitting area, so as not to damage the scald colloid, cause damage, and affect the luminous effect.

3) Precautions for light strip cutting When the light strip is installed, the length of the light strip to be installed should be measured according to the site. When it needs to be cut, the excess light strip should be cut along the marking line of the COB light strip. If you need to add connecting wires, please solder them on the land marks where you cut them.

4) Light strip adhesive release paper When sticking the light strip, peel off the release paper on the back and stick it. It is strictly forbidden to tear off all the release paper at one time, so as to prevent the light strips from sticking to each other.

5. Precautions for installation with profiles When installing the light strip, pay attention to the place where the cutting point of the light strip is in contact with the bottom surface of the inner groove of the profile, and stick mylar tape to isolate it to avoid short circuit. When installing the light strip at the corner, it is strictly forbidden to fold it into a right angle, and it is strictly forbidden to directly bend it and stick it to the profile table.

6. Precautions for selection of suitable power supply Light strips are generally powered by DC12V/24V (direct current). When selecting a power supply to drive, select a power supply with appropriate power according to the length of the light strip to be installed. The total power of the light strip should be lower than 80% of the rated power of the power supply. For example: When you need to use a 5meter long COB light strip, the voltage of led strip is 24V, the power of the strip is 12W/meter, and the total power is 5*12W=60W. It should be equipped with a 24V 100W drive power supply. 7. Pay attention to insulation treatment After the light strip is installed, the light strip wire is connected to the power output end. Insulation, anti-short circuit and anti-corrosion treatment should be done at the terminals and terminals.
