itadori yuuji x gn!reader, unspecified secondary character x gn!reader

summary: itadori's path in life is not suitable for a s/o. he pushes them away only to find he pushed them into someone else.

warnings: character death mention (? he comes back to life tho)

this is literally just angst bc why not i love angst

itadori yuuji has never experienced love quite like when he met you. the soft touches you gifted each other with the promise of comfort and tranquility entranced his entire being, a welcome change from the hyperactivity of his every day life. the life that was once his.

now that life is held in the palm of another, and, as much as it kills him to lie to you, to give you everything but the time of day, he does it anyway. he spills dishonest excuses and empty promises to get it together. yuuji never once had it together. he thought as long as you were ignorant and unknowing, he was keeping you safe. but even safety was killing you inside.

upon the coming of his death, the two of you had kindled an argument unlike the previous ones. there was so much said, and so much left unsaid. that was the beginning of it all, wasn't it? his relationship was falling apart, he was losing the love of his life, and for what? what are his efforts worth if he can't have them? if he can't hold his partner and tell them everything on his mind the way he desires?

little did you know when he stormed out that night that he wasn't coming back. that your sweet, loving boyfriend had nothing more to do with you. he had let himself become a pawn and he couldn't turn back now. after months, it never truly got easier, but you grew stronger, of course. the one thing that yuuji had was strength, and that was also what he happened to give to you upon his departure. you found it in yourself to thank him for that, subconsciously.

you went on living your life and itadori went on living his death. were the two of you even meant for each other?

perhaps not, as you found yourself with the feeling he used to give you, supplied by another. someone capable of living a life with you and not living to die. someone with a kind smile and a heart that was all their own and a brain filled with only thoughts of you.

someone you deserved.

when he finally came back one late afternoon and you looked at him with nothing but love, he knew he couldn't be that person. he knew he couldn't have you.

but he would protect you until he died trying.
