this has got to be my favorite frame in all of utena. the fact that she Said a Bad Word. the fact that she just full on decked mikage in the most intense physical violence in the show since nanami trying to kill her with the knife. the character implications of utena lashing out against someone who threatens the memory she built her whole identity upon-the memory that's the only thing keeping her alive, clutched so tightly it's stained and fraying at the edges with large chunks missing. most importantly the fact that you can clearly see the photos of duelists we'd been shown previously have visibly been replaced with photos of the production crew. amazing. 11/10.

A little analysis of Ratio's owl symbolism. He's absolutely covered (and surrounded) with stylized images of owls. Here are just some examples (feel free to study him to find more). He was even (apparently) supposed to wear an owl mask in an older version of his design. But why.

1. In western culture, owls are traditionally associated with knowledge and wisdom, which indicates his connection with Erudition, as a scientist. That's the most obvious explanation for his owl imagery, and probably the only one intended by the designers. But why stop here. Why not overanalyze it.

2. Owls are known as highly specialized and effective predators. So basically, an embodiment of the Hunt.

Dr. Ratio (about the phase flame): Do you know what to do with cornered prey? Hunt it to the death.

Btw, considering that paths are not just a gameplay convention but the actual in-universe things characters recognize in themselves and others, it's even more ironic that the character who dedicated his whole life to science and education belongs to the Hunt. Because gameplay-wise, the Hunt is the opposite of Erudition. The poor guy couldn't have been further away from Nous even if he tried.

3. Owls are good at being unnoticed. They hunt by hiding, observing, and waiting for the right time to strike. It reminds me of that mission at Herta Station, where we first met him. Most people on the station didn't even know that he was there, even though he personally saved these researchers. 

Screwllum (about Ratio's involvement in that mission): …and pulling the strings from behind the curtain is akin to laying down the gauntlet to a genius.

There is a theory that more or less the same thing is happening on Penacony, with most characters probably not knowing that he's even there.

4. The special structure of an owl's wings and feathers makes their flight practically noiseless, so they can approach their prey unnoticed. In addition to point 3, with him moving through Herta station unnoticed, it also reminds me of how he silently disappeared a couple of times in the middle of his conversation with Aventurine.

5. They gave him vertical pupils, probably in an attempt to make his eyes more owl-like. The problem is, I wasn't able to find a single photo of an owl with vertical pupils. They are round. So, if anything, it makes him look more like a cat.

6. And the last point, it's most likely not true, it's my little conspiracy/crack-theory. 

But he's sometimes referred to as a Professor; he's as much of an Owl as Aventurine is a peacock. Game, please don't tell me he has nothing to do with Penacony's Professor Owl the origami birds often mention, whoever it is.

In fact, if he wasn't too young for that, I wouldn't be surprised if he had something to do with the creation of Dreaworld. Because he mentioned before that taking a bath helps him with going to sleep, and on Penacony you take a bath to go to sleep (what are the chances), and then you enter a world filled with images of owls. It's probably actually nothing, but what a coincidence.

this got really long so tl;dr: just because you haven't seen the thing we're annoyed about doesn't mean it isn't there.

(also this might come off as a little harsh but i promise i'm not upset with you! there is some latent frustration but you're not a part of any of the examples i was thinking of when i wrote this, i'm just trying to explain where this is coming from)

edit: i also want to clarify that there are varying levels of pushback/annoyance people feel and i'm kind of on the mild end of it

i can sort of explain this. not completely, but i can offer my own perspective on it. basically, the "found family" trope gets annoying when people try to start shoving nuclear family labels and dynamics onto it. so for example, two characters can't be friends without being "siblings", a character can't be the older and more responsible one without being "team dad/mom" - while it does make sense in certain contexts for two characters to have a specific relationship, oftentimes it can feel like people are putting a label they're comfortable with onto any non-romantic relationship just so they can understand it easier. as a personal example, i'm aro, and i see people saying "i don't ship these characters because i see them as siblings!", as if the only reason two people who are that close could be not romantically involved is if they're literally or effectively related, so often that it gets REALLY, REALLY annoying. (again, for some characters it makes sense and is canon-compliant, but for a lot of them it's... not)

you say that you use it for just a bunch of unrelated people who spend their lives together, and that's how i think it probably should be. but the former interpretation happens enough to be grating. it's not so much the idea of a family of choice that's the problem, it's the need to force that group of people into a mold that they don't fit into without warping. for me at least, the real potential of "found family" lies in the possibility to explore different structures and relationships, different ways a "family" could look, which is something that i very often see ignored by fandoms in place of making those dynamics into something they're already comfortable with

ill be honest one thing thats never really made sense to me is the pushback against the found family trope on here because i feel like everybody except me has access to a secret nuclear meaning of what that trope entails because when i hear and use it im literally just imagining unrelated ppl who spend their lives together but some of yall act like it killed your dog and made you call your friend your mom
