Round 4, Match 3: Holy Moonlight Sword vs. The Transistor
Holy Moonlight Sword
Tumblr media
From: Bloodborne
Wielder: Ludwig
One of the recurring elements in FromSoftware games, all the way from King's Field to Elden Ring, the Holy Moonlight Sword is the Bloodborne iteration of the weapon. Implied to have been created by the Great Ones (eldritch god-like beings), it is discovered by Ludwig the Holy Blade in the labyrinths beneath Yharnam, and used to fight the scourge of beasts within the city. Eventually, Ludwig lost himself to beasthood, and found his way to the Hunter's Nightmare, along with this Holy Moonlight Sword. In Ludwig's boss fight, the sword would return Ludwig's sanity to him (perhaps due to its eldritch origins and his own familiarity with it), allowing him to fight like a man, rather than a beast. After Ludwig's defeat, it would either be gifted or taken by force by the Good Hunter to use on their own journey.
The Transistor
Tumblr media
From: Transistor
Wielder: Red
The Transistor is a sword that acts as a tool to control and shape Cloudbank (city). The Transistor can shape reality around it, acting as a sort of Task Manager for the game’s world. The way that it does this is through the use of the Process, a legion of robots that directly shape and reconstruct the city. Normally the wielder–or User–of the Transistor would be able to control the Process, but due to Shenanigans at the beginning of the game, Red is unable to control the Process and instead must defeat these robots in combat. Additionally, the Transistor can also absorb the souls of others and use them to unlock combat abilities. Due to further Shenanigans, Red’s boyfriend, Unknown, also gets trapped within the sword, and communicates with Red throughout the game as she wields it.

How do storm gods work in the auroraverse(or any weather gods for that matter)? Because unlike other natural phenomena that have gods, storms don't last. But it is implied that storm gods are the gods of specific storms. Do storms just work differently in Aurora?
"Storm god" is a little bit of a misnomer, because technically they're gods of a weather phenomenon, and weather changes. Broadly, a Storm God's oversoul is contained in a large, fluid airmass, and when that airmass hits the right temperature and humidity, it precipitates into clouds and then a storm. The god is more powerful the more impactful they are, so when the god is a small cloudbank they can't do much and are generally invisible, but when the god moves out over a warm, humid mass of water and starts bulking up into a thunderhead, they get more coherent. Storm gods are mostly minor airy spirits, but gods in particularly chaotic regions with a lot of weather activity can get stronger and more anthropomorphized. Tynan is the rare storm god that went out of his way to expand his power and domain to the point that he could sustain a prolonged presence, even at the cost of fighting the wind by moving himself against it in search of strengthening phenomena like warm ocean currents or avoiding precipitating things like mountain ranges to conserve his strength.

She Shines: 5 Years of Red
It's 2024 and it's time to celebrate another milestone year of me being obsessed with a character – this time it's Red, the silent-but-fierce hero of Supergiant Games' Transistor.
Tumblr media
January 2019
My first Red! The game doesn't take very long to play, so I didn't have to wait long to realize something big was happening in my brain.
Tumblr media
April 2019
I first played Transistor in late January 2019, five years ago. Which is also about the same time I started my art Tumblr. So the two events are somewhat tied in my mind. Getting an approving response from Tumblr's Transistor fandom was one of the first things that happened for me here, and it was such a nice welcome.
Tumblr media
May 2019
And even five years later, my Transistor art still does well. In fact, I see Transistor art generally still doing well. Us Red fans, we're devoted.
Tumblr media
September 2019
And why not? For one thing, she has one of my very favorite character designs of all time. She's gorgeous, electric, ferocious – the red hair, the bright blue eyes, the punk jacket, the torn dress – but still with her glimpses of tenderness and humor, the smiles, the soft gestures.
Tumblr media
March 2020
Even though she never speaks in the main body of the game, the gameplay, art, music, and the one-sided rapport from the Boxer all operate together. If they don't exactly detail Red's personality, I feel like they create a shape around her – you can construct an image of her with what the game gives you, allowing you to feel the emotional connection that's so integral to Transistor's story.
Tumblr media
October 2020
In a way, I like her silence because it offers the gamer some latitude – you can figure Red out, you can intuit and extrapolate personality traits, you can speculate over backstory, but you're not constrained by canon. Different artists and writers in the fandom will have different takes on Red. But the game still gives you enough that they feel like Red.
Tumblr media
March 2021
This isn't a player-proxy, a placeholder. This is an actual character.
Tumblr media
October 2021
Her music is a big part of that. Her songs are beautiful, but they're also emotional. And not just the emotions you might expect, love and grief. There's anger. There's pity, there's frustration. There's existential angst, so stylishly expressed.
Tumblr media
March 2022. I'm realizing I tend to draw Red in March.
Even on “Paper Boats”, which you might think is the most straightforward of the batch, a love song, Red has this dangerous edge. You can run but you can't hide. Maybe she's helpless against it. Maybe she's happy about it. But it goes against the grain.
Tumblr media
May 2022
And I like that there's that contrariness to Red. She's glamorous, but she's also a fighter, even if she's never had to fight before the night the game starts.
Tumblr media
December 2022
This is a woman who bikes, who boats, who finds herself flying over the city without batting an eye. She takes to the battlefield because she has no choice not to, and she thrives. She picks up this device she doesn't understand and in one night ends up mastering it.
Tumblr media
January 2023
But at her core, it's not about her being badass and competent. Video game protagonists are always badass and competent. I think it's her heart as a character that we find so compelling, her love and concern, her protectiveness for the Boxer, her determination to be with him.
Tumblr media
March 2024
Red's singled out by the Camerata because people are so drawn to her. That's true in Cloudbank – and, it would seem, here on the outside.

Started this thought in a discord so it may not be coherent but the pre-hades supergiant games really had a thing for cities didn’t they.
Caelondia, that city on a hill, built on stolen land and watered with the blood of the native people the settlers killed to expand their borders. Positioned as a city of culture and enlightenment while it oppresses and grinds down its most vulnerable citizens. Lined with walls manned by poor orphaned kids and built to enforce the city’s will. Blasted to pieces by a weapon they built to commit genocide.
Cloudbank, the ultimate democracy. The shining city completely in its citizens control. A city of absolute choice and an absolute lack of it. A city where everyone gets to follow their dreams and do what they like, so long as it’s approved by committee. A city that may not even be real, may simply be lines of code. Wiped out by a program within itself, one literally called “the process” (trust the process, isn’t that what people say about voting?) that turned everything to monotone.
And then there’s the Commonwealth. A city born from the ashes of a fallen empire, built on good intentions. A proud city, one that boasts of its diversity, its mercy, its freedom. The city where literacy is a crime and books are contraband. The city where it seems like the only punishment is banishment, and the only way to repent is competition. Another city embroiled in war, with a race of ‘others’ as the enemy. A city you’re not trying to destroy, but change from the inside, from within the system and without.
Yeah. Supergiant’s got a thing for cities.
