Time Travel AGSZC AU (AKA 2-for-1 whump hammer on Sefikura) - Opening

Sephiroth and Cloud are fighting and jump into the past, but doing so knocks Jenova’s hold loose on both of them, and reduces Cloud's enhancements, so now they're in the middle of the desert outside of Midgar, Cloud is dying of injuries because his healing factor is gone, and Sephiroth is a mess of guilt and horror at what he's done.

Their sudden appearance is noticed by the Turks, who fly out with Genesis and Zack to see what's up. They see their lovers, Cloud a bloody heap, surrounded by Tsurugi's pieces, Sephiroth on his knees casting healing spell after healing spell, completely disheveled and unresponsive.

Zack: SEPH?! What- CLOUD?!?! GENESIS!!! 

Genesis dives in immediately, shoving Sephiroth aside when he realizes he's just casting wildly. Sephiroth slumps, his arms barely supporting his torso, hair a wild mess around him as he stares at the ground with unfocused eyes, heedless of his own (albeit minor) wounds. Zack runs up with Genesis and tries to get Sephiroth to make eye contact. Nothing's getting through to him though, so Zack just works on healing Sephiroth's wounds. 

Genesis is concentrating hard. Eventually, he gets Cloud close enough to stable and starts yelling at the Turks to help. Under his direction, Reno, Rude, and Zack finish what they can on Cloud, wrap him up, and strap him to a stretcher.

Genesis: Sephiroth. I don't know what's going on, but you are going to listen to me and you are going to get up and get in that helicopter. Now. 

Sephiroth drags himself up, Zack supporting him, and they get on while Reno and Rude secure Cloud. He can't look at any of them. He can't think. He can barely breathe. He feels their questions, but he can't make sense of the words. Following orders is the best he can do.

Hojo is at the landing pad when they touch down, hearing that Sephiroth might be injured and unresponsive. Cloud is removed first, Zack and Reno running alongside his stretcher, giving the medical team an update. 

Genesis: Sephir- 

Hojo: Sephiroth! Come ou- GURK! 

Sephiroth is securely strapped into a helicopter seat one second, and the next, his hand is crushing Hojo's throat, lifting him off the ground, Masamune through his gut. Then in the next second, before even Genesis can do anything, Hojo is on fire and hurtling over the edge of the building, his screams only croaks through his crushed windpipe. Everyone stands in silence, mouths agape, when suddenly, Sephiroth jumps after him. 

Genesis: SHIT. Call Hewley and a lockdown! 

Rude nods and calls it in, and Genesis starts making his way down the side of the building only a little more safely than Sephiroth did.

What he finds at the bottom is horrifying; a smoldering mess of deformed humanoid sludge with a sword through it, and Sephiroth with broken legs from his landing, leaning on the sword, glaring at the mutated sludge. No civilians are hurt, and fortunately, everyone is standing back. 

Genesis: Sephiroth? 

No response. 

Genesis: Sephiroth, you're hurt. 

Nothing. 

Genesis: Sephiroth, I'm walking to you now. I'm going to put my arm around you, and you will come with me calmly. Mission complete. Do you understand? 

Nothing. Then, a slight nod and grunt. 

Genesis carefully grabs him around the waist, forcing Sephiroth to lean on him while lifting his entire body with one arm. Genesis barks at the onlooking SOLDIERs, Turks, and infantrymen to "clean that up" and "get that door open" as he takes Sephiroth in through a side entrance, then to a service elevator. Angeal runs up as they're waiting for the elevator. 

Genesis: Angeal, take his other side, we're going to the SOLDIER clinic. 

Angeal: *nods and obeys, trusting Genesis implicitly*

They reset Sephiroth's bones so they heal correctly, and he doesn't make a sound. That's normal for him, sure, but not even a huff or a hitch of breath comes out during the whole process, which would have a normal man screaming.

He can't look at them. It hurts too much. The betrayal is too much. How he hurt them is too much. What he did to Cloud and Zack... Sephiroth stays in his shell.

Meanwhile, Zack is pacing as the medics work on Cloud. He's ready to jump in at any second if they ask; his magic power is strong as a SOLDIER, though he's not as talented of a mage as Cloud, Genesis, or Sephiroth. Then Cloud starts seizing.

There's not much they can do, just keep him on the gurney, protect his IVs, and tilt him on his side to prevent choking. But it calms down eventually, and they get back to work.

Finally, Cloud is wrapped like a mummy, blood in one IV, medicine in another. They try a mako drip since his file says he is enhanced, but it makes the seizures start up again, so they turn it off. Zack is left alone with Cloud, watching his breath fog up his oxygen mask, holding his hand, shaking and crying quietly.

Then Zack gets a call. From Cloud.

Zack would be so stupidly possessive over Cloud when the blond woke up. He’d spent four years mildly aware of the shit Hojo was doing to the two of them and not being able to do a damn thing about it.

Then he’d spent another year hauling Cloud across continents, looking after the blond and protecting him from everyone and everything. Had done absolutely everything he could to get the two of them to safety together.

So like fuck was he going to let some random he either didn’t know or barely knew come between the two of them and try and take Cloud away from him now.

Seph wakes up in a tank in the Nibelheim lab with his sanity back and finds Cloud in the tank next to him. No Zack in sight. Horrified, he's certain he must have killed him. He can't leave Cloud here, he knows Cloud will hate him for what he's done but he was a good kid and he has to take care of him to honor Zack's memory… He summons Masamune and cuts down anyone in the way and gets Cloud out - so disoriented seeing the fake rebuilt town.

Unlike Zack Seph has medical knowledge and is able to actually help bring Cloud out of his coma using supplies he stole from the lab etc… Cloud becomes more and more lucid, and it's only around then that Seph begins to realize something is wrong with himself - he's doing things Zack used to do, little quirks of body language and verbal tics... he slowly comes to understand that he is in Zack's body...

I posted this essay a couple months ago, and suddenly realized I should promote it to more than just the 13 real life people I know who read my blog because they like me.

It would be great to have readers who genuinely like my content for the content's sake! I'm hoping to start doing a lot more Final Fantasy VII fan essays, but I also do some reflective essays and humor writing.

A list of my favorite whumpees (and characters i want to see more whump of!)

Zuko (from ATLA) - back when I was a kid and watched the show on TV I didn't even know what whump was but I always loved that final fight against Azula (you know, the one where he gets hurt)

Ace (from One Piece) - he’s always been my favorite OP character and I like the found family trope he has going on so I like fics and stuff where the other crew members are taking care of him (pls don’t mention his d-word to me, i WILL cry. Actually, he's alive and well!!)

Todoroki (from BNHA) - he's my favorite character in BNHA and tbh he’s very whumpable (also I really enjoy fics where Aizawa ends up looking after him like the dad he is)

Jason Todd (DC) - i've seen like one batman movie ages ago and i have not read a single batman/outlaws/etc. comic and i do not really plan on changing that BUT i have been following the Wayne Family Adventures webtoon for the past 3 years for fun and i love it! jason is my favorite and i love it when the tough guys get sick/hurt and rendered helpless and vulnerable! there's lots of fics and i'm excited to read them all hehe

Hak (from Akatsuki no Yona) - he canonically gets hurt A LOT and I'm enjoying it. Big, strong, tough guys getting hurt is just chef’s kiss! (I wish there were more fics about it but the manga itself is feeding me quite well so I can’t really complain)

Kaito Kid (from Case Closed/Detective Conan and Magic Kaito 1412) - he's always been my favorite character in the anime and even though I don't keep up with the anime itself, I've watched all the episodes and movies he shows up in lol He's just so whumpable and I love it when when he gets hurt and Shinichi ends up saving him, even though they're rivals.

Vanitas (Vanitas no Carte) - I don’t actively seek out whump content like fics for him but I did enjoy that one episode where he got hurt and ended up with a fever and all that.

Zack Fair (from FF VII) - the kind of whumpee who's loud and cheerful but gets uncharacteristically quiet when he's hurt and/or sick imo! There really isn't enough whump fics about him... Especially not about mentor Angeal and mentee Zack...

Cloud (from FF VII) - another big, tough guy! Very whumpable as well (though there is surprisingly little whumpy fics (and I'm not a fan of psychological whumpy stuff, I prefer it physical with the characters getting bloody and all that <3))!

Noctis (from FF XV) - I only played the game a few months ago (no, we will not talk about the ending. It’s not real) but I've read whump fics and sickfics about him a few years ago already lol Again, I love the found family kinda trope (is it found family if they've all already known each other and have been close for years? Anyways, I love the bond the group has). There is a lot more Noctis whump content than there is Cloud or Zack whump content.)

Suguru Geto (from Jujutsu Kaisen) - HOW COULD I FORGET HIM??? Well probably because there is nowhere near enough whump/sickfic content for him… I am in desperate need for moreeeee!! Maybe the anime onlys will feed me once the new season is out and they'll get to know him… I am hoping that will happen…

Leon (from Resident Evil) - there is NOT enough whump content for Leon! That being said, I enjoy fics where he works together with the BSAA and everything goes to shit and he gets hurt <3 (In my mind he's besties with Claire, Chris and Jill even though canonically he's never even interacted with Jill as far as I'm aware of but that doesn’t matter to me!)

Ghost (from CoD) - honestly I played most CoD games way back when I was in middle school but I never paid much attention to the story itself lmao But because I played the previous games all those years ago I got the new one that was recently released (just because nostalgia, you know?) and it started this new found love for whumpy Ghost. There is NOT enough content of that though (please, I am literally begging, give me more Ghost whump). Another big (like literally, the guy is huge <3), strong dude that I like to see bloody and hurt.

d'Artagnan (from The Musketeers, like the movie or the show or the book idk, just d'Artagnan) - I've known about the Three Musketeers since I was a little girl idk everyone knows them I guess?? ('All for one and one for all!' and all that. It's just famous) but I've only watched that one movie a few years ago (the one with Logan Lerman). Anyways, I enjoy whump fics about him. Simply because he's the 'baby' of the group and the others are like mentors to him and more experienced and even though he's talented and he can hold his ground, I love it when he gets hurt and the others take care of him.

Legolas (from The Lord of the Rings) - I've always loved him. He's always been my favorite but for some strange reason I never thought about whumpee Legolas until like a year ago??? I absolutely love the bromance between him and Aragorn and Gimli and the idea of him talking in elvish with Aragorn when he's hurt and/or feverish is just so dear to me!

So soulmate AU. Zack and Cloud yeah? Except Cloud doesn’t have a mark. Zack does though, had even met his soulmate already. But now he doesn’t know what to do.

Because he has his soulmate mark and he’s met her and she’s wonderful. Is literally the sweetest human being ever and she’s beautiful and kind and matches Zack so well in his energy and his stupid little antics. But Zack doesn’t love her. Not in the way he probably should.

Then there’s Cloud. Who isn’t his soulmate and doesn’t even have a mark but Zack loves him so much. Loves his dumb spiky hair and his attempts at being stoic when in reality he’s this shy, horribly considerate and kind man. Loves his drive and passion to accomplish his dreams no matter how many times he fails. Loves the small smiles and light blushes he gets when he’s been complimented.

And it’s not fucking fair. It’s not fair to Aerith who is his soulmate and is nothing but supportive of him and loves him and is far too understanding. It’s not fair to Cloud that Zack’s gone and fallen in love with him and now can’t spend a moment away from him, and it’s not fair that Zack wishes, with every horrible, terrible fibre of his being that it was Cloud’s mark he was wearing and not Aerith’s.

Welcome to Let’s Talk Whump, a series of interviews that spotlight the amazing people in our whump community! I’m Malice and I’ll be your host today. 

Here today to talk all things whumpy is the fabulous @whumperofworldsrlds!

Thanks for joining us today! Let’s start with a fact or two about yourself!

Hi! I'm WoW, 28, and I love gaming and writing! I also love making new friends and chatting, even though I'm bad at keeping in touch!

What does whump mean to you? 

To me, whump is an escape, like how some people draw and write to escape from their problems! I'm going through a lot right now, and writing and reading whump is a good way to ease the stress! That and I really enjoy torturing characters, haha!

And how did you find the whump community? What made you want to join? 

I first heard of the term "whump" from a Sherlock Holmes (the original) fic that I forgot the name of at the moment. I first discovered the community around 2019 on Tumblr, after looking up a bunch of kidnapping scenarios. I joined in 2020 because it sounded like fun, as a huge fan of writing kidnappings, and man, I'm glad I did!

Do you think your view on whump changed since you joined? Any specifics such as new or disliked tropes or fandoms?

It hadn't changed a bit, I have to admit, haha! I still love kidnappings and characters getting restrained in some way! There are a few tropes that are squicks and dislikes for personal reasons, but otherwise, the only thing that changed is my love of whump, which has gotten bigger! OC vs. Fandom, I love both, though I wish we had more fandom whump, especially in the fandoms I'm in, Fire Emblem, Super Smash Bros, and Final Fantasy 1!

And your favourite whump trope?

Used as bait is my favourite of all time! Whumpee getting kidnapped as bait for Caretaker/their team, bound and gagged and placed in a highly revealing location for them to find, and they could only scream and struggle in vain as their saviours try to rescue them and get caught themselves! I also love the Parting Words Regret trope! It makes me cry every time whenever Whumpee and Caretaker had a bad argument, and something terrible happens to Whumpee, getting kidnapped, or worse, died. The angst is so good!

Time to hype yourself up! Wat’s your favourite piece that you’ve written?

Out of all the fics and stories I've written, I absolutely LOVE writing and rereading my Super Smash Bros fic, Plead To Me, sadly on AO3 only, sorry! It's a way to celebrate Sephiroth joining Smash Ultimate, and what better way to celebrate his appearance than writing whump where he hurts Cloud Strife and his boyfriend, M!Robin, named Reflet since there's a female version of him to tell them apart! In the fic, he tortures Reflet first, while forcing Cloud to beg and plead so he could stop. He then turns his attention to Cloud himself and tortures him while Reflet watches! And then the rescue from the other Smashers… epic! It all ends well but Sephiroth is still out there, and he'll likely strike again when he has the chance… I absolutely love my description of the whump, along with the two boys' reactions when they're forced to watch each other get hurt and can only scream and plead for the other to not get hurt!

Do you mind sharing what your writing routine looks like?

My writing style needs a bit of work, admittedly, especially in the description parts haha! I usually write while I'm at work (which is overnight), on my lunch break! After working a lot, it feels great to sit down, relax, and write some whump after working hard! I usually have a drink and food with me though I end up forgetting them since I get too focused on my writing, haha! I also write with music blaring (without lyrics so as not to distract me) that fits the mood, like fight scenes, I put RPG fight music. I sometimes do blocks of sentences, but otherwise, a sentence here and there! As for inspiration… I write when inspiration strikes me! I try to write regularly but it feels forced to me, so I usually wait till I find a good prompt for me to use or I get a random idea out of nowhere!

And do you find that it's easier to write some things over others?

The easiest for me is writing what the characters are doing with a flair of some descriptive words as best as possible! The words flow as I write and think of what they're doing, like are they having a conversation? Working on something? Oh man, descriptions are my biggest struggles! Like if I need to describe a chair, all I say is "it's wooden and red" and that's pretty much it, hahaha! I'm working on it though, but it's hard to think of ways to describe some things like settings or items!

Is there anything you're working on at the moment?

I'm working on a few stories and fics with whump! I'm writing a new part of Decedents of Chaos but that kinda stopped for a bit so I can take a break from whump. I also have You're Mine still in the works, just ran into a writer's block. I then have a generic prompt idea sitting in my drafts, and don't get me started on the 292847291 WIPs that I had in my Google Docs for a few years, hahaha!

Is there any advice you’d like to share?

Keep writing, never give up on it! If you need practice, do a "quick scenes" document (basically like sketch dumps for artists, but you put in random scenes that you thought of), and write, write, write whatever you can think of! Also READ! I got better at writing thanks to reading, and I copied a bit of ideas and styles from other writers!

I do love FFVII - it's my favourite game of all time. Sadly, Rebirth did not inspire any fanfics from me (too busy playing Queen's Blood lol), so I don't think I'll be writing any. Maybe the final remake will inspire something as most of my favourite parts of the original story haven't been remade yet (ICICLE INN! MIDEEL! SPOILERS!!!).
