whats wrong with ai?? genuinely curious <3
okay let's break it down. i'm an engineer, so i'm going to come at you from a perspective that may be different than someone else's.
i don't hate ai in every aspect. in theory, there are a lot of instances where, in fact, ai can help us do things a lot better without. here's a few examples:
ai detecting cancer
ai sorting recycling
some practical housekeeping that gemini (google ai) can do
all of the above examples are ways in which ai works with humans to do things in parallel with us. it's not overstepping--it's sorting, using pixels at a micro-level to detect abnormalities that we as humans can not, fixing a list. these are all really small, helpful ways that ai can work with us.
everything else about ai works against us. in general, ai is a huge consumer of natural resources. every prompt that you put into character.ai, chatgpt? this wastes water + energy. it's not free. a machine somewhere in the world has to swallow your prompt, call on a model to feed data into it and process more data, and then has to generate an answer for you all in a relatively short amount of time.
that is crazy expensive. someone is paying for that, and if it isn't you with your own money, it's the strain on the power grid, the water that cools the computers, the A/C that cools the data centers. and you aren't the only person using ai. chatgpt alone gets millions of users every single day, with probably thousands of prompts per second, so multiply your personal consumption by millions, and you can start to see how the picture is becoming overwhelming.
that is energy consumption alone. we haven't even talked about how problematic ai is ethically. there is currently no regulation in the united states about how ai should be developed, deployed, or used.
what does this mean for you?
it means that anything you post online is subject to data mining by an ai model (because why would they need to ask if there's no laws to stop them? wtf does it matter what it means to you to some idiot software engineer in the back room of an office making 3x your salary?). oh, that little fic you posted to wattpad that got a lot of attention? well now it's being used to teach ai how to write. oh, that sketch you made using adobe that you want to sell? adobe didn't tell you that anything you save to the cloud is now subject to being used for their ai models, so now your art is being replicated to generate ai images in photoshop, without crediting you (they have since said they don't do this...but privacy policies were never made to be human-readable, and i can't imagine they are the only company to sneakily try this). oh, your apartment just installed a new system that will use facial recognition to let their residents inside? oh, they didn't train their model with anyone but white people, so now all the black people living in that apartment building can't get into their homes. oh, you want to apply for a new job? the ai model that scans resumes learned from historical data that more men work that role than women (so the model basically thinks men are better than women), so now your resume is getting thrown out because you're a woman.
ai learns from data. and data is flawed. data is human. and as humans, we are racist, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, divided. so the ai models we train will learn from this. ai learns from people's creative works--their personal and artistic property. and now it's scrambling them all up to spit out generated images and written works that no one would ever want to read (because it's no longer a labor of love), and they're using that to make money. they're profiting off of people, and there's no one to stop them. they're also using generated images as marketing tools, to trick idiots on facebook, to make it so hard to be media literate that we have to question every single thing we see because now we don't know what's real and what's not.
the problem with ai is that it's doing more harm than good. and we as a society aren't doing our due diligence to understand the unintended consequences of it all. we aren't angry enough. we're too scared of stifling innovation that we're letting it regulate itself (aka letting companies decide), which has never been a good idea. we see it do one cool thing, and somehow that makes up for all the rest of the bullshit?

Neural Filters Tutorial for Gifmakers by @antoniosvivaldi
Hi everyone! In light of my blogâs 10th birthday, Iâm delighted to reveal my highly anticipated gifmaking tutorial using Neural Filters - a very powerful collection of filters that really broadened my scope in gifmaking over the past 12 months.
Before I get into this tutorial, I want to thank @laurabenanti, @maines , @cobbbvanth, and @cal-kestis for their unconditional support over the course of my journey of investigating the Neural Filters & their valuable inputs on the rendering performance!
In this tutorial, I will outline what the Photoshop Neural Filters do and how I use them in my workflow - multiple examples will be provided for better clarity. Finally, I will talk about some known performance issues with the filters & some feasible workarounds.

What you need & need to know:
Software: Photoshop 2021 or later (recommended: 2023 or later)*
Hardware: 8GB of RAM; having a supported GPU is highly recommended*
Difficulty: Advanced (requires a lot of patience); knowledge in gifmaking and using video timeline assumed

*I primarily gif on an M2 Max MacBook Pro that's running Photoshop 2024, but I also have experiences gifmaking on few other Mac models from 2012 ~ 2023.
**Using Neural Filters can be resource intensive, so itâs helpful to run the test files yourself. Iâll outline some known performance issues with Neural Filters and workarounds later in the tutorial.

1. Meet the Neural Filters!
Neural Filters are powered by Adobe's machine learning engine known as Adobe Sensei. It is a non-destructive method to help streamline workflows that would've been difficult and/or tedious to do manually.
Here are the Neural Filters available in Photoshop 2024:
Skin Smoothing: Removes blemishes on the skin
Smart Portrait: This a cloud-based filter that allows you to change the mood, facial age, hair, etc using the sliders+
Makeup Transfer: Applies the makeup (from a reference image) to the eyes & mouth area of your image
Landscape Mixer: Transforms the landscape of your image (e.g. seasons & time of the day, etc), based on the landscape features of a reference image
Style Transfer: Applies artistic styles e.g. texturings (from a reference image) onto your image
Harmonisation: Applies the colour balance of your image based on the lighting of the background image+
Colour Transfer: Applies the colour scheme (of a reference image) onto your image
Colourise: Adds colours onto a B&W image
Super Zoom: Zoom / crop an image without losing resolution+
Depth Blur: Blurs the background of the image
JPEG Artefacts Removal: Removes artefacts caused by JPEG compression
Photo Restoration: Enhances image quality & facial details
+These three filters aren't used in my giffing workflow. The cloud-based nature of Smart Portrait leads to disjointed looking frames. For Harmonisation, applying this on a gif causes Neural Filter timeout error. Finally, Super Zoom does not currently support output as a Smart Filter
If you're running Photoshop 2021 or earlier version of Photoshop 2022, you will see a smaller selection of Neural Filters:
Things to be aware of:
You can apply up to six Neural Filters at the same time
Filters where you can use your own reference images: Makeup Transfer (portraits only), Landscape Mixer, Style Transfer (not available in Photoshop 2021), and Colour Transfer
Later iterations of Photoshop 2023 & newer: The first three default presets for Landscape Mixer and Colour Transfer are currently broken.
2. Why I use Neural Filters?
Here are my four main Neural Filters use cases in my gifmaking process. In each use case I'll list out the filters that I use:
Enhancing Image Quality:
Common wisdom is to find the highest quality video to gif from for a media release & avoid YouTube whenever possible. However for smaller / niche media (e.g. new & upcoming musical artists), prepping gifs from highly compressed YouTube videos is inevitable.
So how do I get around with this? I have found Neural Filters pretty handy when it comes to both correcting issues from video compression & enhancing details in gifs prepared from these highly compressed video files.
Filters used: JPEG Artefacts Removal / Photo Restoration
Facial Enhancement:
When I prepare gifs from highly compressed videos, something I like to do is to enhance the facial features. This is again useful when I make gifsets from compressed videos & want to fill up my final panel with a close-up shot.
Filters used: Skin Smoothing / Makeup Transfer / Photo Restoration (Facial Enhancement slider)
Colour Manipulation:
Neural Filters is a powerful way to do advanced colour manipulation - whether I want to quickly transform the colour scheme of a gif or transform a B&W clip into something colourful.
Filters used: Colourise / Colour Transfer
Artistic Effects:
This is one of my favourite things to do with Neural Filters! I enjoy using the filters to create artistic effects by feeding textures that I've downloaded as reference images. How I use Neural Filters over different stages of my gifmaking workflow:
I want to outline how I use different Neural Filters throughout my gifmaking process. This can be roughly divided into two stages:
Stage I: Enhancement and/or Colourising | Takes place early in my gifmaking process. I process a large amount of component gifs by applying Neural Filters for enhancement purposes and adding some base colourings.++
Stage II: Artistic Effects & more Colour Manipulation | Takes place when I'm assembling my component gifs in the big PSD / PSB composition file that will be my final gif panel.
I will walk through this in more detail later in the tutorial.
++I personally like to keep the size of the component gifs in their original resolution (a mixture of 1080p & 4K), to get best possible results from the Neural Filters and have more flexibility later on in my workflow. I resize & sharpen these gifs after they're placed into my final PSD composition files in Tumblr dimensions.
3. Getting started
The essence is to output Neural Filters as a Smart Filter on the smart object when working with the Video Timeline interface. Your workflow will contain the following steps:
Prepare your gif
In the frame animation interface, set the frame delay to 0.03s and convert your gif to the Video Timeline
In the Video Timeline interface, go to Filter > Neural Filters and output to a Smart Filter
Flatten or render your gif (either approach is fine). To flatten your gif, play the "flatten" action from the gif prep action pack. To render your gif as a .mov file, go to File > Export > Render Video & use the following settings.
Setting up:
o.) To get started, prepare your gifs the usual way - whether you screencap or clip videos. You should see your prepared gif in the frame animation interface as follows:
Note: As mentioned earlier, I keep the gifs in their original resolution right now because working with a larger dimension document allows more flexibility later on in my workflow. I have also found that I get higher quality results working with more pixels. I eventually do my final sharpening & resizing when I fit all of my component gifs to a main PSD composition file (that's of Tumblr dimension).
i.) To use Smart Filters, convert your gif to a Smart Video Layer.
As an aside, I like to work with everything in 0.03s until I finish everything (then correct the frame delay to 0.05s when I upload my panels onto Tumblr).
For convenience, I use my own action pack to first set the frame delay to 0.03s (highlighted in yellow) and then convert to timeline (highlighted in red) to access the Video Timeline interface. To play an action, press the play button highlighted in green.
Once you've converted this gif to a Smart Video Layer, you'll see the Video Timeline interface as follows:
ii.) Select your gif (now as a Smart Layer) and go to Filter > Neural Filters
Installing Neural Filters:
Install the individual Neural Filters that you want to use. If the filter isn't installed, it will show a cloud symbol (highlighted in yellow). If the filter is already installed, it will show a toggle button (highlighted in green)
When you toggle this button, the Neural Filters preview window will look like this (where the toggle button next to the filter that you use turns blue)
4. Using Neural Filters
Once you have installed the Neural Filters that you want to use in your gif, you can toggle on a filter and play around with the sliders until you're satisfied. Here I'll walkthrough multiple concrete examples of how I use Neural Filters in my giffing process.
Example 1: Image enhancement | sample gifset
This is my typical Stage I Neural Filters gifmaking workflow. When giffing older or more niche media releases, my main concern is the video compression that leads to a lot of artefacts in the screencapped / video clipped gifs.
To fix the artefacts from compression, I go to Filter > Neural Filters, and toggle JPEG Artefacts Removal filter. Then I choose the strength of the filter (boxed in green), output this as a Smart Filter (boxed in yellow), and press OK (boxed in red).
Note: The filter has to be fully processed before you could press the OK button!
After applying the Neural Filters, you'll see "Neural Filters" under the Smart Filters property of the smart layer
Flatten / render your gif
Example 2: Facial enhancement | sample gifset
This is my routine use case during my Stage I Neural Filters gifmaking workflow. For musical artists (e.g. Maisie Peters), YouTube is often the only place where I'm able to find some videos to prepare gifs from. However even the highest resolution video available on YouTube is highly compressed.
Go to Filter > Neural Filters and toggle on Photo Restoration. If Photoshop recognises faces in the image, there will be a "Facial Enhancement" slider under the filter settings.
Play around with the Photo Enhancement & Facial Enhancement sliders. You can also expand the "Adjustment" menu make additional adjustments e.g. remove noises and reducing different types of artefacts.
Once you're happy with the results, press OK and then flatten / render your gif.
Example 3: Colour Manipulation | sample gifset
Want to make a colourful gifset but the source video is in B&W? This is where Colourise from Neural Filters comes in handy! This same colourising approach is also very helpful for colouring poor-lit scenes as detailed in this tutorial.
Here's a B&W gif that we want to colourise:
Highly recommended: add some adjustment layers onto the B&W gif to improve the contrast & depth. This will give you higher quality results when you colourise your gif.
Go to Filter > Neural Filters and toggle on Colourise.
Make sure "Auto colour image" is enabled.
Play around with further adjustments e.g. colour balance, until you're satisfied then press OK.
Important: When you colourise a gif, you need to double check that the resulting skin tone is accurate to real life. I personally go to Google Images and search up photoshoots of the individual / character that I'm giffing for quick reference.
Add additional adjustment layers until you're happy with the colouring of the skin tone.
Once you're happy with the additional adjustments, flatten / render your gif. And voila!
Note: For Colour Manipulation, I use Colourise in my Stage I workflow and Colour Transfer in my Stage II workflow to do other types of colour manipulations (e.g. transforming the colour scheme of the component gifs)
Example 4: Artistic Effects | sample gifset
This is where I use Neural Filters for the bulk of my Stage II workflow: the most enjoyable stage in my editing process!
Normally I would be working with my big composition files with multiple component gifs inside it. To begin the fun, drag a component gif (in PSD file) to the main PSD composition file.
Resize this gif in the composition file until you're happy with the placement
Duplicate this gif. Sharpen the bottom layer (highlighted in yellow), and then select the top layer (highlighted in green) & go to Filter > Neural Filters
I like to use Style Transfer and Landscape Mixer to create artistic effects from Neural Filters. In this particular example, I've chosen Landscape Mixer
Select a preset or feed a custom image to the filter (here I chose a texture that I've on my computer)
Play around with the different sliders e.g. time of the day / seasons
Important: uncheck "Harmonise Subject" & "Preserve Subject" - these two settings are known to cause performance issues when you render a multiframe smart object (e.g. for a gif)
Once you're happy with the artistic effect, press OK
To ensure you preserve the actual subject you want to gif (bc Preserve Subject is unchecked), add a layer mask onto the top layer (with Neural Filters) and mask out the facial region. You might need to play around with the Layer Mask Position keyframes or Rotoscope your subject in the process.
After you're happy with the masking, flatten / render this composition file and voila!
Example 5: Putting it all together | sample gifset
Let's recap on the Neural Filters gifmaking workflow and where Stage I and Stage II fit in my gifmaking process:
i. Preparing & enhancing the component gifs
Prepare all component gifs and convert them to smart layers
Stage I: Add base colourings & apply Photo Restoration / JPEG Artefacts Removal to enhance the gif's image quality
Flatten all of these component gifs and convert them back to Smart Video Layers (this process can take a lot of time)
Some of these enhanced gifs will be Rotoscoped so this is done before adding the gifs to the big PSD composition file
ii. Setting up the big PSD composition file
Make a separate PSD composition file (Ctrl / Cmmd + N) that's of Tumblr dimension (e.g. 540px in width)
Drag all of the component gifs used into this PSD composition file
Enable Video Timeline and trim the work area
In the composition file, resize / move the component gifs until you're happy with the placement & sharpen these gifs if you haven't already done so
Duplicate the layers that you want to use Neural Filters on
iii. Working with Neural Filters in the PSD composition file
Stage II: Neural Filters to create artistic effects / more colour manipulations!
Mask the smart layers with Neural Filters to both preserve the subject and avoid colouring issues from the filters
Flatten / render the PSD composition file: the more component gifs in your composition file, the longer the exporting will take. (I prefer to render the composition file into a .mov clip to prevent overriding a file that I've spent effort putting together.)
Note: In some of my layout gifsets (where I've heavily used Neural Filters in Stage II), the rendering time for the panel took more than 20 minutes. This is one of the rare instances where I was maxing out my computer's memory.
Useful things to take note of:
Important: If you're using Neural Filters for Colour Manipulation or Artistic Effects, you need to take a lot of care ensuring that the skin tone of nonwhite characters / individuals is accurately coloured
Use the Facial Enhancement slider from Photo Restoration in moderation, if you max out the slider value you risk oversharpening your gif later on in your gifmaking workflow
You will get higher quality results from Neural Filters by working with larger image dimensions: This gives Neural Filters more pixels to work with. You also get better quality results by feeding higher resolution reference images to the Neural Filters.
Makeup Transfer is more stable when the person / character has minimal motion in your gif
You might get unexpected results from Landscape Mixer if you feed a reference image that don't feature a distinctive landscape. This is not always a bad thing: for instance, I have used this texture as a reference image for Landscape Mixer, to create the shimmery effects as seen in this gifset
5. Testing your system
If this is the first time you're applying Neural Filters directly onto a gif, it will be helpful to test out your system yourself. This will help:
Gauge the expected rendering time that you'll need to wait for your gif to export, given specific Neural Filters that you've used
Identify potential performance issues when you render the gif: this is important and will determine whether you will need to fully playback your gif before flattening / rendering the file.
Understand how your system's resources are being utilised: Inputs from Windows PC users & Mac users alike are welcome!
About the Neural Filters test files:
Contains six distinct files, each using different Neural Filters
Two sizes of test files: one copy in full HD (1080p) and another copy downsized to 540px
One folder containing the flattened / rendered test files

What you need:
Photoshop 2022 or newer (recommended: 2023 or later)
Install the following Neural Filters: Landscape Mixer / Style Transfer / Colour Transfer / Colourise / Photo Restoration / Depth Blur
Recommended for some Apple Silicon-based MacBook Pro models: Enable High Power Mode
How to use the test files:
For optimal performance, close all background apps
Open a test file
Flatten the test file into frames (load this action pack & play the âflattenâ action)
Take note of the time it takes until youâre directed to the frame animation interfaceÂ
Compare the rendered frames to the expected results in this folder: check that all of the frames look the same. If they don't, you will need to fully playback the test file in full before flattening the file.â
Re-run the test file without the Neural Filters and take note of how long it takes before you're directed to the frame animation interface
Recommended: Take note of how your system is utilised during the rendering process (more info here for MacOS users)
â This is a performance issue known as flickering that I will discuss in the next section. If you come across this, you'll have to playback a gif where you've used Neural Filters (on the video timeline) in full, prior to flattening / rendering it.
Factors that could affect the rendering performance / time (more info):
The number of frames, dimension, and colour bit depth of your gif
If you use Neural Filters with facial recognition features, the rendering time will be affected by the number of characters / individuals in your gif
Most resource intensive filters (powered by largest machine learning models): Landscape Mixer / Photo Restoration (with Facial Enhancement) / and JPEG Artefacts Removal
Least resource intensive filters (smallest machine learning models): Colour Transfer / Colourise
The number of Neural Filters that you apply at once / The number of component gifs with Neural Filters in your PSD file
Your system: system memory, the GPU, and the architecture of the system's CPU+++
+++ Rendering a gif with Neural Filters demands a lot of system memory & GPU horsepower. Rendering will be faster & more reliable on newer computers, as these systems have CPU & GPU with more modern instruction sets that are geared towards machine learning-based tasks.
Additionally, the unified memory architecture of Apple Silicon M-series chips are found to be quite efficient at processing Neural Filters.
6. Performance issues & workarounds
Common Performance issues:
I will discuss several common issues related to rendering or exporting a multi-frame smart object (e.g. your composite gif) that uses Neural Filters below. This is commonly caused by insufficient system memory and/or the GPU.
Flickering frames: in the flattened / rendered file, Neural Filters aren't applied to some of the frames+-+
Scrambled frames: the frames in the flattened / rendered file isn't in order
Neural Filters exceeded the timeout limit error: this is normally a software related issue
Long export / rendering time: long rendering time is expected in heavy workflows
Laggy Photoshop / system interface: having to wait quite a long time to preview the next frame on the timeline
Issues with Landscape Mixer: Using the filter gives ill-defined defined results (Common in older systems)--
Workarounds:
Workarounds that could reduce unreliable rendering performance & long rendering time:
Close other apps running in the background
Work with smaller colour bit depth (i.e. 8-bit rather than 16-bit)
Downsize your gif before converting to the video timeline-+-
Try to keep the number of frames as low as possible
Avoid stacking multiple Neural Filters at once. Try applying & rendering the filters that you want one by one
Specific workarounds for specific issues:
How to resolve flickering frames: If you come across flickering, you will need to playback your gif on the video timeline in full to find the frames where the filter isn't applied. You will need to select all of the frames to allow Photoshop to reprocess these, before you render your gif.+-+
What to do if you come across Neural Filters timeout error? This is caused by several incompatible Neural Filters e.g. Harmonisation (both the filter itself and as a setting in Landscape Mixer), Scratch Reduction in Photo Restoration, and trying to stack multiple Neural Filters with facial recognition features.
If the timeout error is caused by stacking multiple filters, a feasible workaround is to apply the Neural Filters that you want to use one by one over multiple rendering sessions, rather all of them in one go.
+-+This is a very common issue for Apple Silicon-based Macs. Flickering happens when a gif with Neural Filters is rendered without being previously played back in the timeline.
This issue is likely related to the memory bandwidth & the GPU cores of the chips, because not all Apple Silicon-based Macs exhibit this behaviour (i.e. devices equipped with Max / Ultra M-series chips are mostly unaffected).
-- As mentioned in the supplementary page, Landscape Mixer requires a lot of GPU horsepower to be fully rendered. For older systems (pre-2017 builds), there are no workarounds other than to avoid using this filter.
-+- For smaller dimensions, the size of the machine learning models powering the filters play an outsized role in the rendering time (i.e. marginal reduction in rendering time when downsizing 1080p file to Tumblr dimensions). If you use filters powered by larger models e.g. Landscape Mixer and Photo Restoration, you will need to be very patient when exporting your gif.

Higuruma, former lawyer, curse user, and reformed jujutsu sorcerer tries to make sense of what his life has become after the war is finally over.

The sun hung high, and fully illuminated the classroom with the golden spring warmth. The blue sky surrounding it would be pristine, if not for a few stray clouds that on occasion cast its shadows over Jujutsu High, only adding to the idyllic, leisurely ambiance.Â
âI didnât understand that very well,â Yuji admitted as he sheepishly scratched the back of his neck, earning him the indignant grunts from Megumi and Nobara.
âWhat do you mean? Higuruma-san explains things much better than Gojo sensei ever did and you learned from him, of all people!â Nobara complained, leaning over her classmateâs chair and smacking the back of Yujiâs head with her fist. She then proceeded to adjust her eye patch and sink into her chair with her arms crossed over her chest.
âHis explanation was, indeed, very clear,â Megumi chimed in as Yuji attempted to soothe his pain by brushing his fingers over a growing bulge on his scalp.Â
Higuruma, unaccustomed to juggling three teenagers, solely watched the unfolding scene in utter helplessness. With a sigh, he reclined back against the black board while looking at Itadori.
âWhat exactly did you fail to understand?âÂ
Yuji cleared his throat for a second, knowing full well his answer would earn him another round of getting kicked around like a poor puppy.
âEverything,â he whispered, lowering his gaze towards the floor before Nobaraâs protests in disbelief reverberated like a roar throughout the vicinity.
With a sigh of resignation, Higuruma relaxed his shoulders while checking his wrist watch.
âYou do better with practical lessons, Itadori,â the reformed jujutsu sorcerer remarked.
âI do!â Yuji confirmed, starting to pull a contented smile on his face.
âThat wasnât a question.âÂ
âOh.â
That smile left as quick as it came.
Megumi covered his face with his palm, and wondered for a second when the elation for being back to normal life gave place to the mundane, every-day annoyance of dealing with Itadori and Kugisakiâs shenanigans.
âLetâs wrap this up for the day, and tomorrow we can have a practical lesson at the Dojo,â Higuruma concluded, crossing his arms.
After some fumbling around, the three students finished packing their things. Nobara and Megumi stepped outside, as she tried to place a bet on who would get to the vending machines first. Megumiâs grumpy demeanor did little to hide the fact that he had, even if begrudgingly, taken her up on her challenge.
Yuji remained on his chair, though, still ruminating on his hardship to learn about the inner workings of the cursed energy world as quickly as his classmates.
Higuruma looked at the boy, and remained silent for a short while before asking him what was the matter.
âItâs just⌠I donât know, after everything that happened, I thought I could learn these things faster now, you know?â
Softly brushing his hand around his jaw, Higuruma pondered for a moment.
âEach person has a different learning process. I learned jujutsu by reverse engineering my own cursed technique and figuring out how it worked. Most learn about cursed energy and then go onto training their own CTs all the way up to domain expansion. Itâs fine. With only three students, we can tailor classes for each and every one of you.â
His words seemed to soothe Yuji, who looked at Higuruma and spared him a relieved smile.
âI guess youâre right,â Yuji conceded, pondering for a few moments before proceeding, âyou remind me of someone.â
âI do?â
âYes,â Yuji replied, getting up and walking towards the door. For a second, Higurumaâs suited up, responsible demeanor brought him flashbacks of a much lighter colored suit, a blonde, side parted hair and a pair of green shades. âHe was a very serious person, and kind, just like yourself.â
Higurumaâs mouth fell slightly open, but no words came out before Yuji waved at him, bidding his teacher goodbye before sprinting towards Nobara and Megumi.
I am so out of my element. Why did I agree to come here, of all places? Higuruma asked himself while sinking down on his deskâs chair.Â
âRough class?âÂ
The familiar, low baritone voice came accompanied by a few footsteps inside the classroom. Hiromi lifted his gaze to see the signature brownish-beige trench coat, along with the man who wore it.
âGood afternoon, Kusakabe,â Hiromi offered, nudging himself over his seat while motioning to get up. Kusakabe signaled for him to keep seated with one of his hands, before leaning himself on the deskâs side with his hands in his pockets and a lollipop shoved into his mouth.
âRough life,â Higuruma replied, half in jest. Truth was, those past few months â nearly half a year after the fight at Shinjuku against Sukuna â felt like some sort of uncomfortable fever dream to Higuruma.
He was offered the opportunity to atone for his crimes as a teacher at Jujutsu High, and he seized said opportunity. However, the former lawyer caught himself struggling to fall asleep most nights while pondering. He didnât know, unfortunately, what had made his soul so uneasy.
âAt least we are not shacked up like sardines inside a makeshift bunker while fighting for our lives against a genocidal maniac,â Kusakabe promptly replied, earning him a nod from Higuruma.
âI guess youâre right. How has life as the new NSS headmaster been?â
âAlmost pushing me back into smoking. Sometimes, I wish these lollipops were made out of pure nicotine.â
At that, Higuruma spared a quick, discreet smile.
âThat bad?â
âDonât even get me started on it,â Kusakabe grunted, glancing over towards the windows. âItâs a beautiful day, huh?â
Higuruma looked down at his hands, which sat together over the desk. After Kusakabe was done admiring the view, he turned his eyes to Higuruma, noticing the man sinking further into himself.
âHiguruma, how have you been? Is everything alright?âÂ
âIâŚâ Higuruma let his voice drag, uncertain just as his feelings had been about everything that had happened ever since that fateful day in Keitaâs trial, âI donât know how to do this.â
âDo what?â Kusakabe inquired, confused.
âI thought I was supposed to die back at Shinjuku. I believed that I would fulfill my duty, and⌠I donât know, achieve some sort of spiritual absolution if I died while playing my role in the battle against Sukuna. But I just lived. It doesnât make sense, itâs not adding up to me.âÂ
Kusakabe quickly realized this was the first time Higuruma was effectively putting these feelings into words, and conceded him the momentsâ reprieve necessary for the man to collect his thoughts.
âEverything Iâve learned since gaining my CT was how to fight a war.âÂ
Higuruma sighed, and upon further contemplation, realized that what he said wasnât the entire truth. Â
âActually, ever since I was a lawyer, all I ever did was fight a war, be it symbolically or literally. No one told me how to live my life after it was over, in peaceful times. I donât think I quite know how to do that.â
âNo one does,â Kusakabe quickly interjected.
âWhat?â Higuruma asked, his voice slightly surprised.
âNo one knows how to live life. Weâre just⌠living it, and doing whatâs needed to get by. Clinging to what might give it some meaning from time to time.âÂ
Higuruma looked down, and let his colleagueâs words sink in slowly. For all this time, heâd felt like a movie that overstayed its welcome, dragging along its plot for much longer that it should have. Upon experiencing the warmth of the sun coming through the wide set windows caressing his skin, however, Higuruma thought it didnât seem so bad, after all.
âEverything I had ever believed in was broken, and I guess I was, too. My life,â Higuruma remarked, âand Iâm finding it hard to piece things back together. I donât know if thatâs possible.âÂ
âI suppose youâve heard of kintsugi,â Kusakabe said while pulling another lollipop from his pocket and replacing the already finished candy with a new one.
Higuruma was taken aback by the sudden shift in the conversation.
âThe practice of fixing broken ceramic pieces with gold? Yes, Iâm familiar.â
âYour life is the broken ceramic.â
⌠What?
Kusakabe had no ease for metaphors, and it showed in Higuruma's completely puzzled expression.
With a grunt, the seasoned sorcerer pulled the lollipop from his mouth and began gesturing around, as if trying to pull the words to have himself make sense out of thin air.
âWhat I mean to say is⌠broken things can be fixed, and sometimes the way theyâre fixed can make them more valuable than they were before. Or something like that.â
Higurumaâs confusion subsided for the most part, but he remained silent to see if Kusakabe would offer some final commentary.
He did.Â
âThere is value in the healed cracks. Thatâs all. Perhaps this second chance youâve been given is an opportunity to do just that. Heal those cracks with something valuable, I mean.â
Higurumaâs eyes traveled gently over the classroom in front of him, and he finally gazed out the window while actually paying attention to it for the first time in a long while. He saw the golden rays of sunshine projecting a soft, welcoming light over the studentsâ desks, noticed how clear the sky truly was, and the cloud-scattered blue that encompassed it all together as a visual symphony.
âIt really is a beautiful day, after all,â Higuruma remarked, looking back at Kusakabe with a smile.
Kusakabeâs eyes met Hiromiâs, and this was probably the first time he had actually seen the man smiling with actual joy.
In a second, Kusakabe coughed, feeling his face warming up, and averted his gaze while covering his mouth with his fist.
âIs everything alright?â Higuruma asked, gently tilting his head to the side. âDid you choke on your lollipop?â
âNo. Itâs okay, Iâm fine,â the other man answered, mentally pulling himself back to normal. âI just really have to go back to work.â
âOh. Okay. I should probably leave this classroom too and get something to eat.âÂ
Kusakabe nodded and propped himself up, walking towards the door. However, he stopped as he was nearly past it, and turned around.
âHiguruma.â
The former lawyer had just gotten up himself, and turned to face his colleague.
âWhat?â
âMe and some other people from jujutsu high â assistants, mostly â will have a happy hour this Friday. Would you like to join us?â
The question caught Hiromi completely off guard, and he faltered for a few seconds before clearing his throat and answering, âyes. I appreciate the invite.â
Kusakabe nodded once more. âOkay. See you this Friday, then.â
As he watched Kusakabe leaving, Higuruma could feel the liquid gold slowly seeping into the cracks of his broken life, gluing things back in place.

i love ur works and i have a very specific reuqest in mind. this is too detailed so please feel free to ditch a few details because im aware its too much. this is a mv1 x senna!daughter one.
max is hard racing some driver and he gets angry and flustered and he crashes because he act irresponsibly. y/n's heart stops because the way the car rotated and hit the barrier refletced her late father's passing.
her breath stops, max is ok but gp IS ANGRY at him because that could have been easily avoided. max is not hurt at all.
he is still angry when he comes back into the motor home. and then y/n gives him a cold shoulder and doesnt speak to him.
this makes max angrier leading to a passive aggressive arguement. max says something which leads y/n to say "fine then, fuck off and die see if i care" max is shcoked and so is everyonbe else in the motorhome
when she rushes out in tears she bumps into carlos/charles/lando and he comforts her and she says "i never shouldve said that"
they make up, hapoy ending make it extra emotional.

The roar of the engine was a dull thrum in Y/N's ears as she watched the battle unfold on the screen. Max was locked in a fierce fight for position with Esteban Ocon. Every aggressive lunge, every desperate attempt to overtake sent a tremor of unease through her. It was too reminiscent, too close to the edge.
Then, disaster struck. Ocon made a late move, and Max, fueled by frustration and a competitive fire, reacted impulsively. He swerved to block him, the car losing traction as it took the corner too tightly. The world slowed down as Y/N watched in horror. The Red Bull spun, a sickening ballet of red and blue against the asphalt, before slamming into the barrier with a sickening crunch.
Her breath hitched, a choked sob escaping her lips. The way the car crumpled, the dust cloud mirroring the crash that stole her father⌠the memory flooded back, vivid and terrifying. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum solo threatening to burst through her chest.
Thankfully, the medical team rushed to the scene, and the relief was almost a physical blow. Max emerged from the wreckage, shaken but unharmed. But the reprimand from Horner was swift and brutal. "Unnecessary risk, Verstappen! You could have avoided that entirely!"
By the time Max stormed back into the motorhome, his anger was a palpable presence. He tossed his helmet onto the couch, the thud echoing in the tense silence. Y/N sat by the window, her back to him, a cold, hard wall where warmth and concern usually resided.
"Great job out there," Max spat, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Another brilliant strategy by Horner, putting all the pressure on me."
Y/N remained silent. Her silence was a punishment, far worse than any raised voice. Max, already on edge, bristled.
"You gonna say something, genius?" he snapped. "Or are you just gonna sit there like a statue?" Y/N turned a deaf ear to that.
The air in the motorhome felt thick enough to chew on. Y/N sat at the table, meticulously organizing spare race parts, a pointed silence radiating from her. Max hovered by the coffee machine, his usual swagger dampened by a heavy frown.
Christian Horner, ever the mediator, attempted to lighten the mood. "So, Max," he boomed, "what are we learning from this little spin?"
Max, bristling at the reminder, mumbled a vague response about tire strategy. Y/N, without looking up, chimed in, "Perhaps a lesson in spatial awareness wouldn't go amiss."
The air crackled. Max whipped his head towards her, his jaw clenched. "Oh, and who's the expert on spatial awareness, Miss Never-Been-On-The-Track?"
Y/N slammed a wrench down a little too hard, the metallic clang echoing in the tense silence. "There's a difference between calculated risk and reckless driving," she retorted, her voice laced with ice.
Max scoffed. "Spoken like someone who's never felt the pressure of a championship on their shoulders."
Y/N's eyes narrowed. "Pressure doesn't excuse stupidity, Max," she said, her voice clipped.
Horner cleared his throat, his booming voice a desperate attempt to break the ice. "Look, let's all take a moment to cool down. We can dissect the crash later. Right now, Max needs a clear head for the next race."
With that, Horner steered Max towards a debriefing session, leaving Y/N alone in the charged atmosphere. She picked up a stray bolt, turning it over in her hand, her knuckles white with repressed anger. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring the workshop around her.
Just then, Charles walked in, his perceptive eyes catching the glint of tears on her cheeks. "Rough day?" he asked softly.
Y/N choked back a sob. "It's just⌠I don't know if I can watch him race anymore," she confessed, her voice thick with emotion.
Charles pulled up a chair beside her, his presence a silent comfort. "You know Max," he said gently. "He makes mistakes, but he learns from them."
Y/N shook her head. "This wasn't just a mistake, Charles. It was reckless. And it brought backâŚ" she trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
Charles squeezed her shoulder in understanding. "The fear," he finished for her. "It's always there, isn't it?"
Y/N nodded, a tear escaping and tracing a path down her cheek. "I can't lose him too," she whispered, her voice cracking.
Charles offered a sad smile. "You won't," he assured her. "Max is stubborn, but he cares about you. He'll learn from this."
His words offered a glimmer of hope. Y/N knew Charles was right. But the fear, the raw terror that had gripped her during the crash, still lingered.
Max, a whirlwind of frustration earlier, had retreated into a sullen silence. Y/N, her eyes red-rimmed and puffy, refused to acknowledge him directly. The tension crackled between them, a storm waiting to erupt.
Daniel Ricciardo, ever the peacemaker, tried to lighten the mood. "So, Max," he said, a touch too cheerfully, "what are we having for dinner? Surely Y/N has whipped up some magic in the kitchen?"
Y/N's lips twitched, but she remained focused on her phone, pretending not to hear. Max, still fuming, mumbled a curt, "I don't care."
The forced joviality died a quick death. Charles, sensing the undercurrents, offered, "Actually, I wouldn't mind ordering some takeout. How about some Indian?"
Y/N finally looked up, her voice clipped. "No, thank you, Charles. I'm not particularly hungry."
Max scoffed. "Suit yourself. More for the rest of us, then."
The passive-aggressive jabs continued throughout the evening, each veiled comment a fresh barb. Y/N praised Charles's recent qualifying performance, a clear dig at Max's reckless driving. Max, in turn, bragged about a new training program he was starting, a not-so-subtle jab at Y/N's perceived lack of understanding.
"Honestly that race was mine, Ocon fucked it up for everyone," Max proclaimed.
"Maybe," she said, her voice barely a whisper, "if you hadn't been so busy playing daredevil, you wouldn't have thrown away the race."
The words hung heavy in the air. Max felt a flicker of something cold and sharp twist in his gut. "Playing daredevil?" he scoffed. "I was out there fighting for the win!"
"At what cost?" Y/N's voice cracked, the dam of her emotions threatening to burst. "Do you even understand the fear you put me through?"
Max, for the first time, saw a glimpse of the terror that mirrored his own reckless driving. He opened his mouth to apologize, but the words wouldn't come.
The silence stretched, thick with unspoken emotions. Then, in a moment of horrifying clarity, Max blurted out, "Look, if you can't handle the pressure, maybe you should justâ"
The sentence died on his lips as he saw the blood drain from Y/N's face. She stared at him, her eyes filled with a hurt so profound it took his breath away.
"Fine then," she said, her voice a choked whisper. "fuck off and die. see if i care."
The words echoed in the stunned silence. Everyone in the motorhome froze, their eyes wide with shock. Even Max, fueled by anger, felt a cold dread settle in his stomach.
Y/N didn't wait for a response. Tears streaming down her face, she bolted out of the motorhome, the slam of the door a punctuation mark to the shattered silence.
Max stared after her, a tapestry of emotions swirling within him â anger, regret, a terror that mirrored her own. He lunged after her, but Charles, who had witnessed the exchange, caught him by the arm.
"Let her go," Charles said gently, his voice laced with concern. "She needs some space."
Max sank back onto the couch, his head in his hands. "What did I do?" he rasped, the anger replaced by a crushing weight of remorse.
The atmosphere was suffocating. Everyone, even the usually jovial mechanics, seemed to walk on eggshells around the warring couple. Tears streamed down Y/N's face as she walked, the weight of the fight, the fear, and the unspoken hurt threatening to overwhelm her. This wasn't the way it was supposed to be.
The cool night air did little to soothe the burning in Y/N's eyes. She wandered away from the motorhome complex, her legs numb and directionless. The roar of the track faded behind her, replaced by the chirping of crickets and the rustling of leaves. Tears streamed down her face, carving clean tracks through the grime of the day.
Then, she saw it. Half-hidden behind a cluster of trees, a towering mural emerged from the darkness. It was a familiar image â her father, mid-corner, a determined glint in his eyes, the car a blur of yellow and green. A wave of emotions washed over her â grief, pride, and now, a searing anger.
Sinking down onto a nearby bench, Y/N found herself talking to the painted image. "Why didn't you tell me, Dad?" she choked out, her voice thick with unshed tears. "Why didn't you tell me how terrifying it would be to watch someone you love race?"
"Doesn't he understand, Dad? Doesn't he see the risk he takes? It's like he doesn't care! Doesn't care about the fear he puts me through, the terror that I relive every single time I see a car spin out of control!"
She slammed her fist against the concrete wall, a raw scream escaping her lips. The sound echoed in the quiet night, a testament to the storm raging within her. Tears streamed down her face, hot and angry.
"And then," she continued, her voice trembling, "he has the audacity to get mad at me? To act like I'm the one overreacting? Doesn't he see what his actions do? Doesn't he see what he almost took away from me today?"
Silence, except for the rustle of leaves in the night breeze. But in her mind, she could almost hear his voice, warm and reassuring. "coração valente (brave heart)," it seemed to say, the nickname he always used for her. "Fear is a part of it, but it doesn't have to control you."
Y/N wiped her eyes, a flicker of understanding replacing the anger. Her father hadn't raced because it was easy. He raced because of the passion, the thrill, the dance with danger. He wouldn't have wanted her to live in fear, but to find her own strength, her own way to navigate the world he left behind.
The sting in his eyes wasn't just from the acrid smoke billowing from a nearby barbecue. Max's chest ached with a dull ache that had nothing to do with the crash. Y/N's words, "fine then, fuck off and die. See if I care," echoed in his mind, a constant reminder of his monumental screw-up.
He couldn't just sit there, stewing in his self-pity. He needed to find her, needed to apologize and explain the terrifying realization that had dawned on him during their tense silence.
Following a hunch, he made his way to the secluded corner where the mural of Ayrton Senna stood. In the dim glow of a single overhead light, he saw Y/N curled up with her back against the wall, her shoulders trembling with silent sobs. A red mark marred her hand where it had connected with the concrete.
His heart lurched. He knelt down beside her, his voice barely a whisper. "Y/N?"
She flinched at the sound, whipping her tear-streaked face towards him. Her eyes, red and puffy, held a storm of emotions â hurt, anger, and something akin to pleading.
Max swallowed the lump in his throat. "I⌠I shouldn't have said what I said," he began, his voice thick with remorse. "My anger⌠it clouded everything. I didn'tâŚ" He broke off, his own voice cracking.
Tears spilled down Y/N's cheeks. "And I..." she started, her voice trembling. "I never should have said what I did. It was awful, unforgivable of me." Her voice choked on a sob. "I don't⌠I don't want to lose you, Max. Not like that."
With a choked cry, she threw her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. Max held her tight, the dam breaking inside him. He pressed kisses to her hair, each one a silent apology, a promise.
"I get it now, Y/N," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I understand the fear. I see it reflected in your eyes every time I step onto the track. And I promise, I'll never do anything like that again. Not if it means putting you through that kind of pain."
They clung to each other, a tangle of limbs and broken sobs. The night air vibrated with the raw emotions they were finally releasing. Slowly, the sobs subsided into sniffles, leaving behind a fragile calm.
Max pulled back, wiping away a stray tear from Y/N's cheek with his thumb. "Let's go back," he said gently, his voice hoarse. "We can talk properly, sort things out."
Y/N nodded, her eyes searching his. "Together," she added, a shaky smile playing on her lips.
Max grinned back, the familiar spark of mischief returning to his eyes. "Always," he promised. "Together, no matter what the track throws at us."
As they walked back hand-in-hand, the mural of Ayrton Senna seemed to watch over them, a silent guardian of their love, a love forged in fire, tested by fear, and ultimately strengthened by understanding and forgiveness. The road ahead wouldn't be easy, but with each other, they knew they could face anything.

The worker as engine for machine learning is not such an absurd proposition when considering the idiosyncrasies of a company like Amazonâs wider business model. In many respects, much of what Amazon does differs little from the model of Victorian capitalism. Precarious labourers are still marshalled into warehouses and compelled to endure long hours to package goods and churn out surplus capital. But Amazon is less the âeverything storeâ, more a universal logistics system. As Malcolm Harris drolly notes, âmore than a profit-seeking corporation, Amazon is behaving like a planned economy.â The vast warehouses, the delivery vans, the Amazon stores are all physical expressions of a computerized logistical system which distributes labour, goods and information. Every aspect of Amazonâs business model is geared toward enhancing its computational power. Amazon Prime, for instance, loses money on each order, and only exists to attract customers onto the platform who leave the data required to power its logistics and cloud services.

An Introduction to Cybersecurity
I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!
What is cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity is all about securing technology and processes - making sure that the software, hardware, and networks that run the world do exactly what they need to do and can't be abused by bad actors.
The CIA triad is a concept used to explain the three goals of cybersecurity. The pieces are:
Confidentiality: ensuring that information is kept secret, so it can only be viewed by the people who are allowed to do so. This involves encrypting data, requiring authentication before viewing data, and more.
Integrity: ensuring that information is trustworthy and cannot be tampered with. For example, this involves making sure that no one changes the contents of the file you're trying to download or intercepts your text messages.
Availability: ensuring that the services you need are there when you need them. Blocking every single person from accessing a piece of valuable information would be secure, but completely unusable, so we have to think about availability. This can also mean blocking DDoS attacks or fixing flaws in software that cause crashes or service issues.
What are some specializations within cybersecurity? What do cybersecurity professionals do?
incident response
digital forensics (often combined with incident response in the acronym DFIR)
reverse engineering
cryptography
governance/compliance/risk management
penetration testing/ethical hacking
vulnerability research/bug bounty
threat intelligence
cloud security
industrial/IoT security, often called Operational Technology (OT)
security engineering/writing code for cybersecurity tools (this is what I do!)
and more!
Where do cybersecurity professionals work?
I view the industry in three big chunks: vendors, everyday companies (for lack of a better term), and government. It's more complicated than that, but it helps.
Vendors make and sell security tools or services to other companies. Some examples are Crowdstrike, Cisco, Microsoft, Palo Alto, EY, etc. Vendors can be giant multinational corporations or small startups. Security tools can include software and hardware, while services can include consulting, technical support, or incident response or digital forensics services. Some companies are Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), which means that they serve as the security team for many other (often small) businesses.
Everyday companies include everyone from giant companies like Coca-Cola to the mom and pop shop down the street. Every company is a tech company now, and someone has to be in charge of securing things. Some businesses will have their own internal security teams that respond to incidents. Many companies buy tools provided by vendors like the ones above, and someone has to manage them. Small companies with small tech departments might dump all cybersecurity responsibilities on the IT team (or outsource things to a MSSP), or larger ones may have a dedicated security staff.
Government cybersecurity work can involve a lot of things, from securing the local water supply to working for the big three letter agencies. In the U.S. at least, there are also a lot of government contractors, who are their own individual companies but the vast majority of what they do is for the government. MITRE is one example, and the federal research labs and some university-affiliated labs are an extension of this. Government work and military contractor work are where geopolitics and ethics come into play most clearly, so just⌠be mindful.
What do academics in cybersecurity research?
A wide variety of things! You can get a good idea by browsing the papers from the ACM's Computer and Communications Security Conference. Some of the big research areas that I'm aware of are:
cryptography & post-quantum cryptography
machine learning model security & alignment
formal proofs of a program & programming language security
security & privacy
security of network protocols
vulnerability research & developing new attack vectors
Cybersecurity seems niche at first, but it actually covers a huge range of topics all across technology and policy. It's vital to running the world today, and I'm obviously biased but I think it's a fascinating topic to learn about. this story takes place about a year after the end of âpoisoned ratsâ.

Heâs still new to the whole going-to-work thing. Itâs kind of like school, and Jimmy had never liked school, but itâs different in the way that heâs getting paid for his work. And itâs a decent bit more enjoyable than schoolâheâs learning about cars, getting familiar with the inner workings of machines, and he hasnât properly had the chance to pop open a hood since he was a teenager and would help his dad with checking the coolant and whatall.
Itâs nothing glamorous, but Jimmy really likes his jobâmore than when he worked as a call service agent, at least. Today heâd learned how to even the weight of a motorcycle, and even though heâd pinched his fingers between the exhaust pipe and the engine, his boss had praised his efforts and let him off early.
Scott usually picks him up from workâtheyâve got a second car, but Jimmy doesnât take his driving test until this weekend so heâs not really meant to be driving himself anywhereâbut Scott isnât free for another hour, so Jimmy meanders around downtown.
He used to live on these streets, so itâs more instinct and less purpose that leads him down to the park across the block from his old apartment buildingânow closed, he observes, for renovations. The park is lonely at this time of day, two rusting swings hanging silently and a plastic slide gleaming in the sun.
Jimmy stops for a moment, stares at the yellowed grass and bleached plastic playground equipment. Heâd never allowed himself to go anywhere near this park, a spot of joy for the kids living in the rundown neighborhood.
He canât hang here long for risk of being chased off by some bathrobe-clad mother, accusing him of being a predator, so Jimmy turns back to the main part of downtown and heads back in the direction of the mechanic. Maybe Scottâs patrolling in the area, can show off some ice tricks.
Thereâs a handful of other walkers starting to appear when he makes it back into downtown proper, mostly those returning to work from lunch and high schoolers skipping out of school early. Once upon a time, Jimmy knew how to blend in perfectly with this crowd. Once upon a time, he could never stay in one place for too long.
He slides in among them just as easily as he once might have, moving at the same speed and keeping to the common footpath. He keeps his eyes down and dodges anyone coming from the other direction without issue.
Which is why itâs weird when someone runs right into him.
âOh, geezâsorry, can Iââ
âWell, isnât it great to see you!â
Jimmy blinks, flinches as the man heâd run into slaps him on the back a couple of times. He . . . he has no clue who this is.
His mind instantly cycles through various brutes from Xornothâs manor, but this face doesnât match any of them. This man is a bit stocky, straw-colored hair hanging over his forehead, thin beard a bit darker in color. Heâs smiling widely, even as he takes Jimmy by the hand and starts dragging him off.
Jimmy canât help itâsome strange man is pulling him away and he panicsâwith a snap of adrenalineâ
The man jumps back, Jimmy coming with him, as a chair is thrown out of the window of the building beside them, narrowly missing them. He chuckles, taps his nose knowingly.
âYou arenât getting me with that one! Donât worry, I just want to talk. How about in that deli?â
He doesnât point anywhere, strangely enough, so Jimmy just glances around until he sees a deli.
All the well-trained alarm systems in Jimmyâs brain are firing, but. . . .
Now that he thinks about it, there is something familiar about this man. Maybe itâs his cadence, or his eyesâ
And Jimmy realizes with a start that the man is blind, his eyes clouded over, faded scars stretching across them.
Heâs shocked enough that he lets the man lead him into the deli, grab them a table, and order himself a sandwich.
Thatâs when he notices that the man is not only blind, but has earplugs in.
âIâm sorry,â he finds himself saying loudly as the man tucks into his sandwich, âI think you may have mistaken me with someone else.â
The man winces. âYou donât have to shout, Iâm right here,â he says around a mouthful of sandwich. âAnd no, Tim, I know who you are.â
If that isnât ominous. And also the wrong name, though it once again scritches at the part of his brain that finds something about this man so oddly familiar. âJimmy,â he automatically corrects. âNot Tim. And I really ought to get goingââ
âBack to Scott?â
Jimmy freezes, halfway out of his seat.
âBecause Iâm pretty sure heâs patrolling around the East side of the city, yâknow. Unless you want to call Lizzie. Pretty sure sheâs not busy at the minute.â
The man takes another bite out of his sandwich, scratches his beard.
Jimmyâs stomach goes cold. How did heâhow canâitâsâ
âSee Tim, thereâs not a lot that I donât hear about,â the man continues. âHowever, there is something that I need to know, if you wouldnât mind answering.â
He needs to get away. Fight or flight has fully kicked in, and Jimmy needs to run. Jimmy raises his hand, ready to doâsomething, shatter his chair or collapse the table or hurt him in some wayâbut the man only tsks.
âCome on then, none of that. The three of us have got to stick together, really. Wouldnât be good to start fighting, especially with the way Nine acts.â
Slowly, Jimmy sits back down. Itâs not because heâs intimidated, he tells himself. His fingers twitch. He could kill this man in an instant, and no one would ever know.
The man puts down his sandwich in its wrapper and leans in, head tilted a bit to the side. âSo,â he says lowly, âdid you kill them?â
Jimmy knows, instinctively, that he means Xornoth.
And itâs not intimidation that makes Jimmy answer. Itâs some strange feeling that he knows this man, and cares about him. Something familiar in the line of his nose and the color of his hair.
âYeah,â says Jimmy in the same low tone. âYeah, I did.â
The man sits back, a wide smile spreading across his face. âGood. I figured you did, yâknow, but I was sleeping when it happened. You couldâve pulled a runner, yâknow? Couldâve been someone else to get them. That wouldnât have been right, though. It had to be one of their . . . erm, what did they start calling them? Subjects?â
Jimmy swallows, then mutters an answer in the affirmative. He keeps having to remind himself that he doesnât know this man, as familiar as he is. How does he know so much?
âRight. Back in my day, we were âparticipantsâ. What a joke.â The man shakes his head, then takes another bite of his sandwich. âWell, thanks for the info. I wonât tell anyone, promiseâwell, Iâll tell Nine, but Nine isnât much of a talker, so it wonât get out or anything.â
âRight,â Jimmy manages. He checks his phone; Scott should be coming to pick him up soon. He casts his eyes about, trying to think of anything to say to the strange man with white scars and earplugs.
âWhat happened to your eyes?â he asks eventually. The man smiles ruefully, one hand going up to trace over the scars. They arenât precise in any way, some smaller ones littered around the corners, long ones down the middle. If Jimmy looks closely, he can even see the places the irises are entirely missing along with the scar, leaving the man with cloudy white streaks through his eyes.
âLetâs just sayânext time those scientists of theirs have you on the table, make sure and ask âem to strap down your hands,â the man says. âNot that that should ever happen to you again, but you never know, yâknow?â
Well.
Jimmy feels slightly ill, staring at those scars. Most of his arenât self-inflicted, nor nearly as visible as those. Sure, he has one across his cheek, and a small one above his eyebrow, but they donât usually attract much attention. Scott even thinks they make him look rather dashing. He can only imagine the stares and questions this man gets on a daily basis.
The stranger finishes his sandwich, wiping his fingers off with the wrapper. He stands, tips an imaginary hat toward Jimmy.
âWell, Iâll be off. The cityâs a bit loud, donât you think? Oh, and thanks for footing the bill.â
And then heâs gone, and Jimmy sits there in stunned silence until he shakes himself, heads up to the counter, and pays.
He tries to forget about the man. As weeks pass, he moves on, his days taken up by work and Scott and his friends. And he mostly does forget about the familiar stranger, too busy to spare the mental energy needed to try and figure out who he was.
That is, until one night, nearly a month later.
Lizzie had managed to get a hold of their high schoolâs yearbook from when she was a senior and Jimmy a sophomore, and together with Scott and Joel they paged through it, laughing at Lizzieâs galaxy-themed outfit and Jimmyâs unbrushed hair.
They stop on the page of the soccer team, and Jimmy knows from the coos and laughs that theyâre looking at him and his ridiculous hair, but his eyes are caught on a familiar face.
âWhoâs that?â he finds himself saying, pointing to the boy beside him, the boy who has his arm slung around his shoulders, the boy whoâin one small picture off to the side, is knuckling Jimmyâs head.
And then he remembers.
He pages through the yearbook until he finds him.
A senior that year. One of his friends, and one of the only people who tried to still hang out with him after his powers got out of hand.
Heâd almost completely forgotten about Martyn.
Martyn, the dude with the new Playstation. Heâd been poweredânot strongly, but with some fairly average super hearing and far vision.
Jimmy thinks back to the man heâd met, blinded by his own hands, hearing so intense that he has to wear earplugs at all times.
And then he wonders, dreading the unknown answer, what kind of mistakes had been made with the experiments before his ownâand who on earth Nine might be.

Frankie, with his background in engineering and a penchant for precision, was already reading through the recipe you had chosen when you stepped back into the kitchen, his brows furrowed in concentration. He was a man who liked instructions, and clear guidelines he could follow, and was approaching the task of helping you with your annual holiday baking with the same eagerness to learn and excel that he did everything else.
âOkay,â Frankie began, looking up from the recipe. âIt says here we need two cups of flour. Do we have a measuring cup?â
You laughed as you reached around his waist to the drawer behind him, scooting him aside to open it. Pulling out the set of metal measuring cups, dangling them from the hook of your finger they swung back and forth as you presented them to him. Only for him to take them and then examine them like they were intricate tools from his own toolkit.
âThen weâre going to need to sift the flour into that bowl,â you said, pointing at the mixer on the countertop behind him.
Frankie nodded, his gaze fixated back on the recipe again as if they were the blueprints of some intricate machine. âSifting. Got it.âÂ
His hands, those of a man familiar with both the delicate components of any aircraft engine and the demanding physicality of military life, picked up the sifter with an almost reverent care.Â
Leaning back on the counter you watched as he measured the flour, levelling the cup with the back of a knife â precision in every movement.
You couldn't help but smile. It wasn't every day you got to see a man whoâd jumped out of airplanes and commanded operations with unwavering focus fussing over a cup of flour.
Frankie eyed the mixer like it had shown up overnight and wasn't a staple fixture in your kitchen. A slight furrow creased at his brow. âCreaming means...?â
You fought back a laugh, you knew he was deep into this task as there was no way Francisco Morales would ever let a possible innuendo like that slip by without comment.
You stepped closer, your proximity to him not unwelcome, and showed him how to use the mixer. âJust like this,â you said, guiding his hands to add the butter cube by cube. âIt aerates the butter and will make the cake light and airy.â
As he caught on, you could see the familiar spark of understanding in his eyes, the same spark you've seen when he's solved a complex problem or pieced together a challenging puzzle.Â
âSo just like ensuring the proper airflow in a jet engine?â he commented with a smirk on his lips making you laugh.
âI'll have to take your word on that Captain,â was your response as you leaned around him to drop in a teaspoon of vanilla.
Frankie's laugh was a rare sound that very few truly got to experience, but there it rang out in the quiet of the kitchen, warm and deep. He placed a kiss on your forehead with a squeeze of your hand before he turned back to the task at hand. The two of you stood watching as the mixer whirled in the bowl as the butter and sugar transformed into a creamy, pale cloud.
