stupid maybe-plurality thoughts under the cut (i make myself cringe sometimes)
from what i know there's me ????? i don't know who the fuck i am and i guess i'm still trying to work that out. distinguish my personality from the. others. no i will not call them "alters" or "headmates" because they're not actually different people in my head. they're me with different personalities.
the second concrete "personality" i call clotaire. it doesn't actually show up very often (it's mostly me) but when i'm him (??????) i feel. younger. i feel like i'm a little kid. somewhere in between seven and twelve. i try to treat myself gently when i get like this.
the third isn't as easy to distinguish. i call it octavia. he's like. my brain basically. like a sort of guardian angel. or me but wildly unfiltered. she takes care of me and clotaire but when she's by herself it's like she hates being alive or something. i think that this summer i sort of "was" octavia. octavia is motherly. octavia is kind. octavia is less me than clotaire is but also somehow so much more.
then there's a potential fourth?? i don't know if this is a part of my actual personality or if my tumblr persona has become a genuine separate person. i don't have a name for this one (de sade maybe) but. he's. uh. i don't want to call him a vampire because that is stupid and ridiculous and cringecringecringe. he just exudes vampire energy. and also cockroach energy but in a different way from me. he's wildly homosexual and flamboyant and tends to speak in a very poetic prose-like fashion. graceful. almost like a stage actor. his vocabulary slips into mine sometimes but i think that's just because i want to be him. at my core i really want to be him but i know i'm not. whenever i play him (or he plays me) i feel so free. like i'm gliding. the cooler version of me. i usually try to channel him in public by myself when i'm not a nervous jittery non-speaking mess.

beating hearts [l'amour ouf] by gilles l ellouche
i had the opportunity to see l’amour ouf in advance, with the cast in attendance, but unfortunately, my experience was far from positive. after only 30 minutes of q&a, i had to leave the theater. benoît poelvoorde's personality disappointed me so much that i preferred to leave.
the film has two major characteristics: it feels like a script straight out of wattpad, and the production resembles a typical netflix movie. if you’re not a big movie fan, you might find some enjoyment in it, but for a cinephile, it’s a complete waste of time.
script and writing the screenplay is disappointing, bordering on caricature. the writing feels rushed, with characters whose motivations lack depth. i enjoyed the romance between the young jackie and clotaire(though the names are a questionable choice), but everything deteriorates quickly once the characters become adults.
as the protagonist, jackie is simply incomprehensible. as a teenager, she had a promising future, but as an adult, she becomes a character without purpose, focused solely on an uninteresting romance with a man. it’s frustrating to see a female character reduced to so little when she had potential. her only obsession seems to be clotaire, with no hobbies or personal goals.
in contrast, clotaire has a bit more substance: her objective is clear (to find jackie or take revenge). but again, the development remains weak. the overall writing of the characters lacks subtlety, which is particularly frustrating for fans of well-crafted narratives.
acting while mallory wanecque and malik frikah bring a refreshing energy to the younger versions of the characters, the adult performances by adèle exarchopoulos and françois civil leave much to be desired. i found their acting flat and devoid of nuance. furthermore, i don’t understand why they made adult jackie so foolish. this abrupt and inexplicable shift in her character's portrayal makes the film hard to appreciate.
positive aspects the only positive thing for me is the visual quality of the film. the images are beautiful, and it’s clear that careful work was done on the aesthetics. however, this is insufficient to compensate for the shortcomings in writing and acting.
conclusion in summary, l’amour ouf is a film that lacks depth, both in its script and its characters. if you’re looking for something light and mindless, you might find it enjoyable. but for a cinephile expecting complexity and realism, this film is a real disappointment. modern french films sometimes suffer from a lack of quality, and l’amour ouf is a glaring example of this.

The Obskertans
Obskerta, a kingdom of shadow and storm. In times immemorial two great fragments of the pillar fell on the border of the dawn touched forests of the Lightweaver and the parched mesas of the Stormcatcher. There they spread a darkness unlike anything dragonkind had ever born witness to, great shadow magic flooded the land and strangled the light from the area. In this violent land a dynasty took root and through the generations its progeny has produced the king Clotaire. May he rule eternal.
Obskerta is a monarchy teetering on the very precipice of launching itself as a major world power, or at least that's what its king Clotaire would like to have one believe. While it make come off as grandtsanding, the small nation has made a name for itself in recent years for its more than expansionist mindset after a bloody civil war in which the king killed all fourteen of his siblings in a bid for the throne.
Cloaked in steam and shadow Obskerta's primary export are its consructs brought to life through electromancy and the binding of the souls of the dearly departed to their machinations. With this near-endless source of of labor the nation's infrastructure grows more and more each day, and rumor has it that the king has set his sights on the Sea of A Thousand Currents.

chlothar i: overview
(sometimes spelled clothar, lothar, or clotaire)
chlothar was the king that first grabbed my attention when I was learning about the franks. To give you a quick view of his character--he killed two of his nephews (who were still children) to remove the possibility of them growing up and making a claim on a portion of the kingdom. It wasn't even his own idea, it was his brother Childebert who had originally pitched this scheme.
The impression most seem to get from Chlothar is that of a scheming, amoral king, doing whatever needs to be done to seize and hold onto as much power as he can. This strategy seemed to work out decently well for him, as he did outlive his three brothers and in turn obtain all of their lands and more.
Chlothar was the youngest of Clovis' sons, inheriting the smallest share of the kingdom upon his fathers death. (Clovis had his lands divided among his four sons, rather than choosing a single heir. I will discuss this more in the future)
He would have been a teenager when he first became king, over the region of Soissons. Over the next 50 years, Chlothar would accumulate six wives, nine children (and probably more that were not legitimized/documented), and the lands of Orleans, Reims, and Paris. Around 558, he would gain his father's title, "King of All Franks"
Chlothar frequently teamed up with his brothers to subjugate neighbouring peoples like the Thuringians and Burgundians. He also teamed up with his brothers to attempt to wrest power from his other brothers, or sometimes was the one being teamed up on.
Chlothar's wives:
After the death of his brother Chlodomer, he married his widow Guntheuc as a means of obtaining his assets.
His second wife Radegund was a Thuringian princess, who he took as a war prize when she was still a child. She would go on to found her own monastery and become an influential religious figure free from her husband.
His wives Ingund and Aregund were sisters. Gregory of Tours describes a story where Ingund asks Chlothar to "find a suitable wealthy husband" for her sister. Chlothar then decided he would be a suitable husband, and goes ahead with marrying Aregund.
->E.T. Dailey's biography of Radegund makes an interesting argument for these two women not being "official" queens at the time, instead given the title retroactively, since they were the mothers of the kings that Gregory lived under.
His wife Chunsina is mentioned one entire time in The History of the Franks as being the mother of his son Chramn.
Finally, he took his grand-nephew's widow Vuldetrada as a wife for a very short period of time, because the church got so mad at him about it that he annulled the marriage.
Another event that contributes to Chlothar's infamy is the murder of his own son. After accumulating a large portion of land on his own, Chlothar's son Chramn sought to break away from his father's control. He even teamed up with his uncle Childebert to attempt this, but was unsuccessful. What ensued was a war with his own father, where he fought with his half brothers and was eventually chased into Brittany, where he took refuge with their king Chanao.
The war ended with Chlothar himself defeating both Chanao and Chramn in battle, after which he would have Chramn stranged to death and burned with his family in a cottage. What a supportive father!
Chlothar lived into his 60s (a big deal for the time, giving him the epithet "the old") and died from a fever (sometimes people say it was out of remorse for killing Chramn--Gregory even describes it happening exactly one year after the death of Chramn). Gregory attributes some very conceited last words to him:
"What kind of a God kills such great kings in this way?"

i really want to fix the Hospital Song Issue because the fact that there is an awful sound in the back right at the end (which is the very best part save for the second verse) and i can't edit the album when it's in review already because that means more waiting.

Prompt# 17: Sally
The broken path was defensible. Were one inclined to destroy the already daunting approach weaving down the leeward side it would be impregnable. A pity that there was no sign of the courier atop the peak, otherwise the job would have been firmly in hand with naught for the lone remaining competitor to do about it. Or completely irrecoverable if the cadre turning that lonesome summit into their private research outpost were so inclined to claim the prize themselves.
It was almost unfair how simple the task had been for them. A swift jaunt to Ishgard, before traipsing overland and following the lengthy ascent to their current location. Their chosen leader, Clotaire, waxed nostalgic about the lost approach as Ellory nodded along without paying much mind. It was not like she disagreed, having experienced just how miserable it was circumventing the longer, less perilous, path herself winding through the mountains. It simply did not matter in the moment. Merciless were getting further ahead by the moment. Or at least had the potential to. So after too little rest, and far too much failed efforts to recruit the cadre to their side, there was little more to be done save to venture forth once more.
"While I understand the strategic element of your request, I must regrettably decline. I had more than my fill of bloodshed in my youth. I cannot countenance more."
"Well…" With a defeated sigh, the hyurgadyn adjusted the sword at her hip once more, "At least offer them no safe haven."
That garnered a small smile, and an agreeable nod, "Of course. Should they possess the means to cause mischief we will bar their approach."
While it seemed unlikely they would opt to travel that path, it was some relief to think there may yet be a place to retreat to should the situation turn dire.
So with one last hot drink, the crew decamped and shuffled further on in search of the pass opening toward the old paths to Northreach. Little to the voyage beyond panting breaths and muffled curses whenever a foot turned on loose stone or narrow footpaths forced them to press back against the stone and shuffle through ilms at a time. At least they were turning more leeward, offering some respite from the wind. And a lovely panoramic view of Ablathia's Spine, from the frozen ribbons of old rivers to the evergreens capped turns-long by heavy snowfall. Picturesque, even to those with little time to pay mind to it.
It was only when they came nearer a broad clearing, warily edging around the side, did they come across an odd snuffling sound. A massive beast rooted about, several times larger than the Hellsguard accompanying them. Shaggy fur tinkling from clinging icicles with each movement it made. Massive fists yanking up some sort of tubers from a patch of earth well churned by its search. And to one side, a small auri woman. Their slender body leaning up against the side of a rugged spruce, bruises mottling the exposed sight of their face and one horn snapped clean off. If not for the slow rise and fall of their chest, they would have thought her a corpse.
Oliver whispered under his breath, "That may well be the woman we've been looking for."
"Remarkably hale for a carcass." Closing her eyes, Arlette took several beats before adding, "Bad shape. Should we attack?"
A crunch of careless feet rounded the further side of that small pass. Ozbeg at the lead as Merciless brazenly intruded upon the scene, either due to ignorance or arrogance. They seemed a bit short on allies. Even the more forgiving pass was not a kindly one. Whirling about, the beast rose to its full height. More impressive considering just how much of it had been masked by its previous hunch.
"Snow ape?" Oliver suggested, with a faint frown. Tasting the words to see if he really appreciated them.
With one snatch of a meaty hand, it plucked up the drowsing Raen and thrust her up toward its massive, tusked jaws. There was a collective wince as it bite down hard. Thankfully, just to clasp the back of the woman's jacket, before leaving its bounty behind to leap high up toward the jagged stone of a nearby outcrop. Sure hands and feet finding purchase on rock that looked sharp enough to slice clean through all but the sturdiest of mountaineering boots as it ascended swiftly. A single baleful glance thrown back at the lot of them, before it leapt off further into the distance.
Ellory did not pay it much mind. Neither did Ozbeg, as he turned slowly to take in the sight of them peering out from their rocky cover.
"Shall we combine our efforts to recover-" Bless his heart, but Oliver did attempt some matter of diplomacy."
"No." The xaela interjected. A familiar weapon in his hand.
"Good." Ellory drew her sword, body already beginning to shiver in anticipation. Crater loomed near behind with lips peeled back in a snarl and halberd at the ready. River clutched heavy hatchets in each hand with an look cold enough to challenge the snowfall.
The two hyur drew their own weapons, "Of course not."
