I have this little quirk in my writing where every once in a while i get inspiration for some elements from my italian lit class which i have a hard time not cringing about but at the same time. The amount of referencing each other italian authors do is insane and like. An important thing in textual analysis so who am i to not be worthy of doing the same thing. Who else out here is writing stories that reference torquato tasso. Why would i cringe about that that's crazy levels of intellectualism

Out In The Rain (Violet Bridgerton x OC)

Summary: Clorinda wishes to go out in the rain. Violet isn't exactly thrilled with the idea, but Clorinda persuades her otherwise.

Word Count: 758

Warnings: Light angst, but mostly just fluff

The sky began to cloud over as Clorinda Marlcaster looked out the window with a delighted grin. Raindrops began to fall not long after, each one a tiny, sparkling jewel, just beckoning her to come outside. Clorinda cast her eyes to the sky for one final moment before deciding to answer mother nature's call and go out to meet the gentle rain.

"Violet, come on," she called out, her laughter carrying on the wind as she made for the door. Violet reluctantly followed behind, not stepping past the threshold of the door as she watched Clorinda twirl beneath the newly opened heavens. Clorinda had always adored the rain, finding a certain magic in it that most did not.

Violet was less than enthusiastic about the idea of being dragged out into the inclement weather, finding it too improper to let herself be marred by raindrops, possibly ruining a perfectly good dress. Yet, the way Clorinda looked out there, her face a shining smile of pure bliss, she couldn’t admit that she wasn’t at least a little tempted to join her.

A moment later, Clorinda skipped back to her and seized her hand, attempting to pull Violet into a moment of carefree, joyful dalliance. "Don't be so dour, my dear," she said with a mischievous glint in her eye. "The rain is but a reminder that life is full of delightful surprises, waiting for us to embrace them."

Violet couldn't help but chuckle at Clorinda's infectious enthusiasm. Her fears of dampened silk dresses and smeared makeup faded as she allowed herself to be led into the downpour. "Very well," she conceded, stepping into the rain with Clorinda by her side. She closed her eyes and let the raindrops kiss her skin.

Clorinda's amusement was palpable as she twirled Violet around the garden in the midst of the weather, their laughter nearly drowning out the sound of the pattering rain. In that moment, as they danced together in the grass, they realized that neither of them ever felt more free.

The rain began to lessen in intensity several minutes later and their laughter died down with it, changing instead into a peaceful contentment. They ceased their spinning, favoring instead to let the world still itself around them as Clorinda got lost in Violet's eyes.

A drop of rainwater rested on Violet's cheek, stopped by the curvature of her cheekbone. Clorinda's hand came up to wipe it away, her thumb gently brushing it aside. She was beautiful like this, Clorinda thought, more so than she always found her, that was to say. Her face was clear and cleansed from the rain, the freckles around her nose and eyes more pronounced and her expression conveyed none of her usual reservations, just a soft and tender smile, one of her most genuine. That’s how Clorinda liked her best; happy, unconcerned with the opinions and perceived judgement of others.

"Do we love each other," Violet asked, a hint of doubt casting uncertainty into her words.

It was a layered question, one Clorinda didn’t quite know how to answer properly, so she decided to speak from the heart. "I don't believe it’s any secret that I carry a great deal of affection for you. I cannot speak to your own feelings, however. Those are for you to decide."

Violet gave a quiet nod of understanding, then gently nestled her cheek further into the warmth of Clorinda's palm. "I haven’t felt like this since," she paused and Clorinda could feel her hesitance at even saying his name, "since Edmund. It isn’t exactly the same as it was with him, but I don’t think it’s meant to be. The love I shared with him, and the love I have for you, they’re different, but nonetheless real despite it."

"Then there lies the answer to your question. Love doesn’t have only one definition. It encompasses a range of feelings and if we choose to call them love, then that is what they are. I know my heart loves you, Violet Bridgerton, and whatever happens, it always will."

Clorinda put no pressure onto Violet to say the words back to her, she knew it was not as simple as that for her dear Lady Bridgerton. Instead, she would content herself with the time they were able to spend together, isolated from the watchful eyes of the ton and able to express themselves freely with one another. Maybe that was all it could be, but she would take it gladly if it meant having even a moment by her side.
